Ezra 7:10

A ROLE MODEL

George Headley Sr. and Jr. were both pastors, ministering mostly in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  Both father and son modeled for me what it takes to be a pastor.

Ed and Janet Apgar are parents of children a little older than ours.

When their boys were teens, Ed and Janet showed us how to deal with that age group through their example.

Role models are helpful.  There are many role models in the Bible, and one of my favorites is Ezra.  He is a great role model for pastors and laymen. Begin your message by sharing a little about Ezra.

Then stress that he was able to accomplish all that he did because he had a prepared heart.  Ezra, as role model, teaches us to do three things:

SEEK GOD'S WORD - ",,,to seek the law of  the Lord..."

SHOW GOD'S WORD  - "...and to do it..."

SHARE GOD'S WORD - "...and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments."

You don't have to be a preacher to study God's Word, live God's Word, and share what God has taught you.

Psalm 2

GOD IN CONTROL

As we look around us and see all the perversion, we might get discouraged.  We must remember that God is in control, and He is victorious over all sin.  In Psalm 2 we see four "voices". The first is rebellious man, and the other 3 are each member of the Trinity. In this passage we find:

THE REBELLION OF MAN Vss. 1-3

THE RESPONSE BY THE FATHER Vss. 4-6

THE RULE OF THE SON Vss. 7-9

Jesus will destroy the enemy and establish His millennial kingdom.

THE REMINDER FROM THE SPIRIT Vss. 10-12

·       The Judge was UNFAIR – Vs. 2

·       The Woman was UNRELENTING – Vss. 3-5

·       The Judge was UNDONE – Vss. 3-5

THE POINT – Vss. 6-8

·       God Is NOT UNJUST – Vs. 7

·       God is NOT UNREACHABLE – Vs. 7

·       Man is NOT UNDERSTANDING – Vs. 8 – If we truly grasped these principles there would be no fear of faith being present when Jesus comes.

************************************************************************************

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

UNDERSTANDING MYSELF

MY IDENTITY – Vs. 1 – I am a Minister of Christ and Steward of the mysteries of God.

Philippians 4:14-19

HEAVENLY BANKING

(If you would like the complete notes to this sermon by way of Word Attachment, please hit "reply" and request it.)

Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 is all too often taken out of context, without Christians considering any conditions that God might place on the fulfilling of this promise.

Let's consider this verse in light of verses 14-19.  I think of this particular passage as a picture of Heavenly Banking.  I see the Christian doing what he should do, and our Heavenly Father responding.  Please note that Heavenly Banking:

HEAVENLY BANKING REQUIRES INVESTMENTS - Vss. 14-16, 18

In verses 10-13, Paul was thanking the believers at Philippi for their financial support.  It had been some time since they had helped, but they were again able to do so.  Paul did insist, though, that it was God who enabled Paul to flourish whether his financial conditions were good or bad.

Paul did not want the Philippians to think that he didn't need appreciate or their support.

Vs. 14 - Paul says here, "You've done well", or, "You've done a beautiful thing!" They had "communicated" or had fellowship with Paul. They were partners with Paul in his ministry. Their gift made them part of his team.

Vss. 15-16 - When Paul left the Philippians, they supported him financially so he could continue his missionary work.  You would think that churches would stand in line to support someone as great as the Apostle Paul, but the only supporting church Paul had was the Philippians.

According to Verse 15, the Philippians communicated with Paul concerning giving and receiving.  These two words were banking terms.  Today we would use the terms debits and credits.  This reminds me that giving is a business transaction.  Giving is an investment in God's business!

Vs. 18 - Paul had received a generous gift from the Philippians.

Notice how pleased God is when we invest in his work.

Paul calls it "an odor of a sweet smell".

Investments in God's Kingdom made with the right attitude smell good to God!

Investments in God's Kingdom are sacrifices given to God.

Giving to the church and to missions is actually an act of worship!

God is well pleased with the right kind of giving!

God is well pleased with sacrificial giving. Luke 21:1-4

What are God's principles for giving?

In the Old Testament the tithe is mentioned. That's 10 percent. I believe that for us as Christians, the tithe is the logical place to start.  Why should we give anything less, having received the wonderful gift of salvation?  And I believe that the tithe should go to the local church.

But above the tithe, the investment in the local church, there is the investment we can make in missions around the world.  And there are some New Testament principles that help us decide what we should be doing. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

HEAVENLY BANKING YIELDS INTEREST - Vs. 17

Paul is saying here, "I am more interested in your reward than receiving a gift."

When we give with the right attitude and with the right proportion God will allow you to bear fruit both in this life and in the next.  God pays interest on your investments for Him.

Paul knew that God rewards those who invest in God's Kingdom.

And there are many Scriptures that prove this. Proverbs 11:25, 19:17, 22:9, 2 Corinthians 9:8

God promises sufficiency so we can abound to every good work.

God multiplies our investments. They gain interest.

Imagine what God can do with your investments, if you make them willingly and cheerfully!

Matthew 6:19-21 - Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Money invested in earthly endeavors disappears.

Money invested in the Lord's work reaps eternal rewards.

Giving money does not gain you entrance into Heaven.

Only being born-again by faith can do that.

But giving money to the Lord's work means that God can reward the Christian in Heaven for the investment made on earth.

HEAVENLY BANKING IS FULLY INSURED - Vs. 19

Now hear me! We should never give to get!

Giving so we can receive is not pleasing to God.

But, when we give sacrificially

When we give cheerfully

When we give out of love first for God, and then for the individual then God promises that our giving is fully insured!

God promises that our needs will be met.

Notice it says "needs" and not "greeds".

God won't provide for our selfishness.

Notice how God will provide for us.

He will take care of ALL our needs and will do it according to His riches in glory.

If you ask a rich man for a donation to your favorite charity and he gives you $10, he has given to you out of his riches. But that's a donation you and I could also give out of our riches.

If you ask a rich man for a donation to your favorite charity and he gives you $50,000, he has given according to his riches.  He has given as only a rich man can give.

Get the point? God gives according to His riches.  That means that God will give to us generously in order to meet our needs.

Perhaps our thoughts can be summed up with Matthew 6:33,

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

It seems to me that God is saying, "You take care of my business, and I'll take care of yours."

So now we know the principles of Heavenly Banking.

Heavenly Banking:

REQUIRES INVESTMENTS

YIELDS INTEREST

IS FULLY INSURED

STILL GRACE

To introduce this message I freely gave away $5 and explained that it was "grace".  She did nothing to earn the money, nor would she be required to.

I then told the story of John Newton, the author of the hymn "Amazing Grace".

I explained that there was still grace available for all of us and then commented on this outline and these verses.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE THE POWER POINT PRESENTATION OF THIS OUTLINE PLEASE EMAIL ME (HIT "REPLY") AND ASK ME FOR THE POWER POINT.  IF YOU ARE PASTORING PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU PASTOR.  I JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHERE WE ARE MINISTERING WITH SERMON SEEDS.

THE SOURCE OF GRACE

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 1:17 - For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

SALVATION BY GRACE

Romans 3:24 - Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

KEPT BY GRACE

Acts 20:32 - And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

VICTORY BY GRACE

Romans 5:17 - For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

2 Corinthians 12:9 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Timothy 2:1 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

THE THRONE OF GRACE

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

MINISTRY BY GRACE

Acts 20:24 - But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

1 Corinthians 15:10 - But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

1 Peter 4:10-11 - As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. [11] If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MULTIPLICATION OF GRACE

2 Peter 1:2 - Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

WANTING GOD'S BEST

LEARNING FROM MEN OF PRAYER – LESSON #4 – JABEZ

A COMPLETE LESSON

INTERACTION

V     Many men want things that are the "best"!  What are some of those things?  For example – "The Best Truck".

V     What are some problems associated with wanting what is best?

V     What are some of the things that we should seek the best in, such as, the best marriage relationship possible?

V     What are some of the best things that God has to offer?  Why do we not always want them?

V     How should we go about getting God's best?

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 - And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. [10] And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, a long genealogy is interrupted by the author in order to point out a man named Jabez. He stops his droning of names for a moment to point out one man, Jabez, who was different from everyone else!  It seems that he's saying, "Don't miss this guy, he's special."

·        What do you think it means that Jabez was more honorable than his brethren?

·        We should try to be honorable in all areas of life. What are some of those specific areas?

·        Jabez' name means "pain", "sorrow" or "sorrowful".  His mother bore him in sorrow or "pain".  Perhaps it was the pain of child-birth or perhaps the mother was a widow when he was born.

·        In spite of life being hard for Jabez he turned out well. It is because he asked God for the things he wanted.

·        Do you think this was a selfish prayer? What is the reason for your opinion?

JABEZ WANTED GOD'S BLESSING

Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed…

·        Jabez wanted great blessings from God.  Why should we want the same?

·        Who should decide what blessings we get and why?

·        In what ways has God already blessed the believer?

Ephesians 1:3-7 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: [4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: [5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, [6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. [7] In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

·        What are some of the blessings that God is willing to bestow upon the believer according to the following scriptures?

Numbers 6:24-26 - The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: [25] The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: [26] The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Philippians 1:2 - Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 15:13 - Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

JABEZ WANTED GOD'S INFLUENCE

…and enlarge my coast…

·        Jabez was asking God to enlarge his borders or his realm of influence.

·        What are the areas of influence in our lives?

·        In what ways would it be good to expand our influence?

·        In what ways should we want God to expand the influence of our church?

·        What must we be ready to do when we pray this prayer for ourselves and our church?

JABEZ WANTED GOD'S POWER

…and that thine hand might be with me…

·        What is Jabez admitting here that we men sometimes have trouble admitting?

·        Why is the order of this request in Jabez prayer significant?

·        Comment on the importance of these verses for those of us who would like to see our realm of influence increase:

Zechariah 4:6 - Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

JABEZ WANTED GOD'S PROTECTION

and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!

·        Why do you think Jabez made this request?

·        How will doing wrong grieve you?

·        How will keeping short accounts with God give you God's best?

·        How does the wrong that others do grieve us?

·        How can God protect us from what others do to grieve  us?

A PRAYER FOR THIS WEEK:

1. Bless me indeed.

2. Enlarge my area of influence.

3. Put your hand upon me.

4. Keep me from evil that it might not grieve me.
