Re: SERMON SEEDS J26 FOR 9/18/06

Posted by: pastoradkins <pastoradkins@...>

Dear Pastor Jack,
Just a few weeks ago you had included an outline on "Worship With Your Wallet"
I have lost that copy.
Is there any way you could send me a copy of that outline again?  I would truly appreciate it.  It would be quite helpful for a need I have coming up.
Thank you for your many sermon ideas you share with us.
In Christ,
C.J. Adkins, Pastor
Westmoreland Baptist Church
Huntington,  WV

1 Samuel 12

THE END OF AN ERA

A king (Saul) had been installed.  Samuel, who was the last judge to rule over Israel before the monarchy began, is giving a farewell sermon to the Children of Israel.

MINISTRY REVIEWED – Vss. 1-5

Samuel establishes the integrity of his ministry.

MISTAKES REMEMBERED – Vss. 6-12

God had blessed Israel, but Israel rebelled, worshipping false Gods.  Also Israel had asked for a king.

MONARCH RECEIVED – Vss. 13-15

They now had the king they desired. Obedience to the Lord under the new king was called for.

MOVEMENT REQUESTED – Vss. 16-19

It was the time of the wheat harvest, a time when it didn’t usually rain. Samuel requested in prayer that in rain to give credibility to his words that they were wrong in asking for a king. The request was answered and the people feared.

MERCY REASSURED – Vss. 20-25

Samuel assured the people that were not to fear but to faithfully follow the Lord.

Psalm 34: 1-10, 22

INGREDIENTS FOR A GOOD ATTITUDE

 (A COMPLETE LESSON)

·       Tell us about someone you met recently who had a good attitude.

·       What are some of the characteristics of people with good attitudes?

·       Why is it important that Christians have good attitudes?

·       What are some of the negative activities of others that adversely affect our attitudes?

Attitude for Christians is important.  In Psalm 34 we find some ingredients that, if put into practice in our lives, will positively affect our attitude.  We should want to please the Lord with the best possible attitude available.

PRAISE - Vss. 1-2

·       Notice that part of having a good attitude is making a decision.  We need to decide that we want to have a good attitude, that we will have a good attitude, and that we are going to praise the Lord continually as one of the ingredients of that good attitude.

·       Why is praising the Lord at all times so difficult to do?

·       How will praising the Lord put our problems into perspective?

·       What are some of the things we normally “boast” about, good and bad?

·       How does bragging on the Lord help our attitude and the attitude of believers?

PARTNERSHIP - Vs. 3

·       How does corporate worship positively affect one’s attitude?

·       How does fellowship with other believers positively affect one’s attitude?

·       What ever happened to Christian fellowship?

PRAYER - Vss. 4-6

·       Vs. 4 – The place we go to seek the Lord is the “Throne of Grace”.

Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. [15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·       Why is fear such a crippling thing?

·       Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. [7] And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

·       Vs. 5 – What individuals have made you radiant when you’ve looked at them?

·       Why should looking at the Lord make us both radiant and confident?

Hebrews 12:2 - Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

·       Vs. 6 – When we are saved out of troubles, do they always go away?

·       1 Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

PROTECTION - Vs. 7

·       What does it mean to fear the Lord?

·       Have you seen or heard of any times when the Lord’s protection was clearly evident?

·       How should the Lord’s protection of His children affect our attitude?

·       Colossians 3:3 - For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

PARTICIPATION – Vs. 8

·       How do we “taste and see” that the Lord is good?

·       What blessings come to the trusting man?

·       Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

·       Psalm 71:1 - In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

·       Psalm 56:11 - In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

PREFERENCE – Vss. 9-10

·       Why does the Lord require fear of those who would receive His blessings?

·       What are some of the “good things” that we won’t lack when we seek the Lord?

·       1 Chronicles 16:11 - Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.

PARDON - Vs. 22

·       How should our redemption affect our attitude?

·       2 Corinthians 5:8-9 - We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. [9] Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

Assignment – Please choose one of these specific ingredients to focus on this week.

Malachi 3:8-11

GIVING WITH INTEGRITY

We have all met people who have lacked integrity.  Some lack moral integrity. Others lack integrity in their business dealings.   There are even some pastors who lack integrity because they do not practice what they preach.  The Jews of Malachi's day lacked integrity in the area of giving to God's work. Many today lack integrity in this same area.

Remember, a lack of integrity is also a lack of honesty.

GOD'S ACCUSATION - Vs. 8

The Jews had robbed God because they had failed to give as God had prescribed.

GOD'S ACTION - Vs. 9

God had cursed the nation because of their failure to give.

GOD'S ADVICE - Vs. 10a

The one who is not giving properly should start to give with integrity. (1 Corinthians 9:6-7).

GOD'S ASSURANCE - Vs. 10b

God will give great blessing when we give properly.

Matthew 20:17-28

IT MAKES SENSE! AM 9/17/06

LIFE OF CHRIST #43

People say lots of things, humorous and serious that make a lot of sense. We especially like it when people say sensible things when others are saying and doing things which are not sensible.

Nobody made more sense than the Lord Jesus Christ and that is because He is God.

This week Jesus is slowly headed towards Jerusalem for His last fateful visit.  On his way He will pass through Jericho and this event probably took place on the way to or in Jericho.

Let’s watch Jesus make sense this morning. Let’s see:

SUBSTITUTION IS THE SENSE OVER SIN – Vss. 17-19

Vs. 17 – This is at least the third time that Jesus had warned the disciples.  He took them apart, because telling the multitude would do no good and stir up all sorts of trouble.

The disciples were still expecting Jesus to establish His Messianic Kingdom then and now.  They were looking for His reign to begin.

There will be a reign and the Apostles will have a key part in that reign.  Jesus had just recently assured them of that after the interview with the Rich Young Ruler. Matthew 19:28

What Jesus wanted the disciples to understand was that before there was a crown there was a cross.

Vss. 18-19 – Jesus very explicitly spelled out for the disciples what was going to happen in Jerusalem.

·       He would be betrayed – This was done by Judas

·       The betrayer, Judas, would deliver Jesus over to the scribes, the translators and interpreters of the law, and the chief priests.  He would actually be delivered to the Sanhedrin, the Jewish Supreme Court.

·       The Sanhedrin would convict Jesus of blasphemy because He claimed to the Son of God.

·       They would condemn Jesus to death and deliver Him over to the Gentiles, the Roman government.  The Jews did not have the authority to kill Jesus, so they turned Him over to the Roman authorities.

·       The Roman soldiers would mock and scourge Jesus and then crucify Him. Matthew 27:26-31

·       The good news is that on the third day Jesus would rise from the dead.

At first thought the cross makes no sense at all.  Here was a sinless righteous man, God in the flesh who would be falsely accused, persecuted and murdered.

But it does make sense when you consider why Jesus went to the cross.  He went as a substitute.

He went to the cross to die to pay for the judgment a righteous God must place on sin.  Jesus took the place of every sinner on the cross. He went to the cross to die for you. Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 6:23a, Matthew 20:28, Isaiah 53:3-6

The only way the cross makes sense is that Jesus as our substitute for our sins.

So what is our responsibility in light of what Christ did on the cross?  Accept His payment for sin. Rely on Him for forgiveness. John 3:16-18

SACRIFICE IS THE SENSE OVER SELF-SEEKING – Vss. 20-23

We rightfully hold James and John in great regard.  James was the first Apostle to be martyred.  John was the Apostle of love, suffered for his faith on the Isle of Patmos and gave us five books of the New Testament: The Gospel of John, the Epistles of First, Second, and Third John, and the Book of Revelation

But neither James, nor John, nor their mother Salome, were perfect.

Vs. 20 - Shortly after Jesus told His disciples for the third time that he was going to die, these people come to Jesus looking for a favor.

Instead of being concerned about the predicted death of their Lord and Master, and the suffering that would mean for Him, they were jockeying for position in the coming Kingdom.

Vs. 21 – Their mother was the spokesperson, but these fellows wanted and desired what she was asking for. In fact in the Gospel of Mark it says it was James and John that desired this privilege.  They wanted to be above everyone, even the other Apostles.  They wanted their thrones above everybody else’s throne but Jesus!

Vs. 22 – Jesus tells them that they do not know what they are asking.

How did Jesus earn His position of uppermost importance the Kingdom?  He did it through sacrifice and not self-seeking.  If Jesus was self-seeking, He would have never left Heaven, let alone gone to the cross. Philippians 2:5-11

Jesus was asking them if they were willing to be baptized with the same baptism and drink the same cup of humiliation, suffering and death as he was.  Those who will be rewarded by the King must suffer for the king.

The Christian life is not one of self-seeking, but sacrifice! Luke 14:26-27, Romans 12:1, 2 Timothy 3:12

Why should I be willing to live such a sacrificial life?  Because of the sacrifice that Jesus made for me!

Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Vs. 23 - Jesus looks ahead and realizes that although these two disciples will sacrifice for Him, as every true believer in Christ will. But He tells them that rank in the Kingdom, at least as far as the highest positions has already been ordained by God.

These disciples were not be concerned with position, but with sacrifice for their Lord and Master.

SERVICE IS THE SENSE OVER SELFISHNESS – Vss. 24-28

Vs. 24 – The disciples were jealous.  They probably thought that James and John were taking advantage over their family relationship.  They wanted that sort of position for themselves.

Vs. 25 – In the governments of Jesus’ day there were many dictatorships.  And many “great men” would “lord it over” those below them.  They could be very tyrannical.

And we all know people who like to lord it over others today.  They like to use their authority to take advantage of others.

Vs. 26 – But Jesus said, that it is not to be that away among His followers.  Those who are in the greatest positions of authority are to be ministers, or servants of all.  This word is the word we get the word “deacon”. In fact, each one of us when we are in church or involved with church people is to serve. Galatians 5:13

Vs. 27 – Jesus makes His command it even more intense.

The word servant here means slave.

If we are going to be leaders and if we are going to receive Christ’s greatest rewards, we are to be slaves. Philippians 2:3-4

Vs. 28 – Jesus did what He was telling His disciples to do.

Not only did He come to serve as a slave.  But He paid the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Should we as His followers do anything less?

What Jesus said here makes sense.

Instead of living a self-seeking selfish life, let us seek to live a sacrificial life of service.

·       SERVICE IS THE SENSE OVER SELFISHNESS

Acts 12

LESSONS FROM A JAIL CELL

THE MODEL CHURCH #20 OF 20

What are the advantages to being a child of God?

Are there any apparent disadvantages to being a child of God?

This chapter basically ends the treatment of the Church in Jerusalem, and now makes the Gentile church and outreach to the Gentiles the focus.  Here are some lessons from Acts 12:

GOD'S PEOPLE HAVE RESTRICTIONS Vss. 1-4

We mustn't think that God's servants are immune to problems, suffering, or even death. God allows suffering for various reasons.

Some people have come to Christ, thinking all their problems were solved.

Their biggest problem was solved, that of sin.

Because the problem of sin was solved, there is the promise of eternal life. John 3:36

In some ways, becoming a Christian is the beginning of problems.

1. Satan is now you enemy. 1 Peter 5:8

2. God has chosen trials as a means of growth. James 1:2-4

3. God has chosen trials as a basis for reward.  James 1:12

4. Persecution comes with faith in Christ. 1 Peter 1:12-14, John 15:18-20

God's people do have restrictions. Let's see Peter's restriction in the first four verses of our text.

GOD'S PEOPLE HAVE A RECOURSE Vs. 5

Actually, God's people have more than one recourse, but the one mentioned here is prayer. Matthew 7:7-11, James 5:16-18

If your like me, you are happy when your children trust you.

There is no greater joy that when my children trust me for an opinion or for help.

I do not mind my children asking for anything within reason, especially when they are in trouble. In fact, I'm glad when they do. Imagine the joy we give the Father when we cry out to Him, in shear dependence and trust.

And notice that the prayer here was unceasing. So often we just say a little prayer and then forget the request entirely. Prayer is to be a continuous, stubborn thing, until such time God gives an answer or shows us that we are praying for the wrong thing.

GOD'S PEOPLE HAVE A RESCUER Vss. 6-11

Psalm 34:19 - Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

Psalm 97:10 - Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

John 10:27-30 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. [29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. [30] I and my Father are one.

GOD'S PEOPLE HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES Vss. 12-17

TO REPORT - Peter would give them a full report. Vss. 12&17

Paul gave full missions reports. Acts 14:27

 WHY IS REPORTING IMPORTANT?

      1. It allows people to know how to praise and to pray.

      2. It gives credit to God.

      3. It makes the missionary or preacher accountable.

I give a pastor's report monthly at council meeting.

  TO BELIEVE - Vss. 13-16

GOD'S ENEMIES HAVE RETRIBUTION  Vss. 18-25

JUST AS I AM

In honor of Ethel Peters 8/25/22-9/24/04

If you would like the complete notes of this sermon, please email me at jpeters@alltel.net.

If you have attended this church or other evangelical churches for very long, you are undoubtedly familiar with the hymn that we just sung, Just as I am.  The words were written in 1836 by Charlotte Elliot and the music we sing this hymn to was written by William Bradbury.

Miss Charlotte Elliott was visiting some friends in the West End of London, and there met the eminent minister, César Malan. While seated at supper, the minister said he hoped that she was a Christian. She took offense at this, and replied that she would rather not discuss that question.

Dr. Malan said that he was sorry if had offended her, that he always liked to speak a word for his Master, and that he hoped that the young lady would some day become a worker for Christ.

When they met again at the home of a mutual friend, three weeks later, Miss Elliott told the minister that ever since he had spoken to her she had been trying to find her Saviour, and that she now wished him to tell her how to come to Christ. “Just come to him as you are,” Dr. Malan said. This she did, and went away rejoicing. Sankey, Ira David. My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns. Harper & Brothers, 1906.

About the words or this hymn her brother said: “In the course of a long ministry, I hope I have been permitted to see some of the fruit of my labor, but I feel that far more has been done by a single hymn of my sister’s.” http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/u/justasam.htm

Just As I Am is one of those Gospel hymns that has been used as what we call an “invitation hymn”.

It is generally sung at the end of a service and is used to invite people to trust Christ as Savior.  This hymn also encourages Christians to bring their problems to their Savior.

This hymn has a great Biblical message.

The theme of this hymn is “I Come”.  There are five verses that we use of this hymn.  Each one stresses a different aspect of coming.

VERSE 1 – I COME WITH ONE PLEA

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 2 – I COME FOR COMPLETE PURIFICATION

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 3 – I COME WITH MANY PROBLEMS

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 4 – I COME FOR GREAT PROVISION

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 5 – I COME BECAUSE OF GREAT PROMISES

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

This hymn was my Mom’s favorite!
