Review: Bose Personal Amplification System (PAS)

Posted by: mark <mark@...>

Well after all the questions and opinions on the Bose PAS I had the
privilage of hearing them in use at a songwirters night near Nashville. The
hosting songwriter, Lauren Braddock http://www.laurenbraddock.com/ , is one
of Bose's selected beta testers.

The songwriters night was held in a small hall that can seat up to 100-150
people - there were probably 50 people in attendance. It appeard to me that
the Bose PAS would be good for audiences up to a couple hundred (500 tops).

The three songwriters sat in a row in front of their respective PAS (3 in
total). Each PAS came with a mixer so each performer had their own mix for
acoustic guitar and voice. I believe the integrated mixer has 4 channels.

I must say that they sounded simply incredible. Because each one had their
own sound reinforcement it provided similar imaging to that which would be
achieved with no amplification, but sitting very close to the performers
(mimicking a more intimate setting).

Imagine this in comparison to a small PA system in mono, or even "stereo".
With the PA all you get is two point sources of the same signal (or "stereo"
signals with imaging selected by the sound engineer). The standard PA simply
mushes all the sounds together and sends them back through a pipe or two.
Think of warm water - a hot pipe and a cold pipe arrive at the "mixer" and
the result is "warm". Neither hot nor cold. The same is true of a standard
sound system.

The apparent advantage of the Bose system has much more to do with keeping
each sound source discreet than to do with any "newfangled" technological
advances. You can experience the intensity of the "hot" and the "cold"
seperately. I was very impressed with the result. Kudos to Bose, where
"better audio though marketing" is the goal. 🙂
