Psalm 103:8-14

KNOWING GOD’S MERCY – Page 1

Knowing God #6

If you think about it, every one of us at one time or another has been shown mercy. Not having to pay a bill, not receiving a deserved punishment, not being penalized for handing in a late paper, receiving help on a job or project around the house, that was your own responsibility.

The greatest shower of mercy who ever lived is God.

Lamentations 3:22-23 - It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. [23] They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

God shows mercy to everyone, or we’d all be dead. We’ve all sinned. We’ve all violated God’s holy laws. And yet God does not immediately cast us into hell when we violate His commandments. If he did, earth would have been unpopulated long ago!

God’s greatest show of mercy was at the cross of Calvary where His Son died for your sins and mine. Romans 8:6-8

Now, through faith in His Son, God shows us the mercy of forgiveness and ever lasting life.

Ephesians 2:8-9

God’s mercy is such a tremendous blessing, not just at the moment of salvation, but throughout the life of the Christian.

Psalm 103:8-14 gives the believer a clear understanding of some of the mercy of God. It also gives the one who is yet to come to Christ some encouragement to be born again.

We want to continue our series on knowing God this morning by concentrating on Knowing God’s Mercy, as found in Psalm 103:8-14.

THE DECLARATION OF GOD’S MERCY – Vs. 8

Psalm 103:8 - The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

In this verse God declares outright that He is the God of mercy.  “Merciful is the adjective form of a word which means to “love deeply”, “be compassionate”, or “have mercy”.

When God described Himself to Moses he said in

Exodus 34:6, …The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

Because God is compassionate He cares about you!

He is concerned about your well being, your needs, your eternal life!

With God you are not a number on a computer printout. You are a real person!

God is also gracious. We think of grace as “unmerited favor”. Because God is gracious to us, He is showing us favor that we do not deserve.

Not only does this verse declare that the Lord is merciful and gracious, but slow to anger.

There are many of us who can lose our tempers at the drop of hat. But God is holy, and does nothing unholy.

Although God’s righteous wrath is a terrible thing to experience, God is slow to anger.

If God was not slow to anger, the children of Israel would have never made it to the Promised Land. Between their complaining, immorality, and idolatry, there was enough for God to wipe them out!

This verse also tells us that God is plenteous in mercy.

This means that God abounds in love or in loving kindness.

Get this through your head, beloved. God loves you.

This is not just a trite saying.

THE DESCRIPTION OF GOD’S MERCY – Vss. 9-10

Psalm 103:9 – He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

In relation to God’s children, God does not always chide. That is, He is not always scolding us!

Could God find reasons to scold His children all the time?

Indeed, He could!

None of us are perfect. We could all do better.

However, as justified as scolding us would be, God realizes that we would easily be discouraged if all we ever heard was scolding.

When He scolds us He is correcting us so that we confess our sins and do better.

Hebrews 12:6 - For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

Also note that God does not keep His anger forever. Psalm 32:5

As Christians, Christ died for our sins.

When we sin as Christians, we do not lose our salvation, but we lose our fellowship.

When we confess our sins, our fellowship with God is restored, and God is no longer angry with us.

And when we arrive in Heaven, and face the Judgment Seat of Christ and receive our rewards, and our embarrassments, that will be the end of it. There will be no more anger for any of our sins.

Psalm 103:10 - He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

This is a terrific verse for the Christian.

He has not dealt with us after our sins, or we’d be in hell, or at least on the way!

God has decided to deal with us in mercy.

Our sins and iniquities He dealt with at the cross and put them on the back of His Son instead of on our backs.

THE DIMENSIONS OF GOD’S MERCY – Vss. 11-12

In these two verses we have two pictures of God’s mercy.

One picture deals with height, the other with width.

Psalm 103:11 - For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

How high are the Heavens above the earth?

The distance of the Heavens above the earth are like the Engergizer Bunny, “They keep going, and going, and going”.

The space above the earth goes for billions and trillions of miles.

That’s a lot distance.

That’s a lot of mercy!

My friend, I may not know why or how you are hurting today. But I can assure you of God’s mercy in your life.

His mercy toward them that fear him.

If you’ve feared Him enough to trust the Lord Jesus as your Savior His mercy is there for you.

As you fear, that is reverence and respect, Him in your Christian walk you will see evidences of His mercy every day! I suggest that you look for them!

Psalm 103:12 - As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

If you travel north you will eventually travel south.

If you travel south you will eventually travel north.

South and north meet at the north and south poles.

However, you can travel east forever and never start heading west.

And you travel west forever and never start heading east.

If it were possible to walk straight into space in a straight line, we could head east, and never see someone who is heading west.

When it comes to our sins, God sends them in one direction, and us in the other, never to meet again!

My friend, every sin you’ve ever committed is paid for. Every sin you will ever commit is paid for!

When you commit a sin as a Christian, that will not keep you out of Heaven, for your sins are paid for!

This does not give you license to sin.

Romans 6:1-2 - What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? [2] God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Because we have received so much mercy from God, we should not want to sin.  We should not want to add to the list of things that Jesus had to die for!

Because we love our loving God and our wonderful Savior, let’s make every effort to flee from sin, and of course, keep short accounts with God by confessing our sins.

THE DELIGHT OF GOD’S MERCY – Vs. 13

Psalm 103:13 - Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

Unfortunately, for some this verse is not significant because they have not experienced the love of a Father.

The Psalmist is saying here that as a good Father loves his children, God loves those who fear Him.

THE DESIGN OF GOD’S MERCY – Vs. 14

Psalm 103:14 - For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

God knows our frame. He knows that He made us from dust. He never gives us more than we carry can for He’s always there to carry us!

HE WILL NOT OVERLOAD YOU WITH TRIALS

HE WILL NOT OVERLOAD YOU WITH TEMPTATION

HE WILL NOT OVERLOAD YOU WITH TASKS

Isaiah 51:11 - Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

REDEEMED - Therefore the redeemed of the Lord

RETURN - shall return, and come with singing unto Zion

REJOICING - and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy;

REMOVAL - and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

Matthew 9:18-26

THE WOMAN AND THE CENTURION

BOTH WERE IN DESPAIR – Vss. 18-20

BOTH WERE DEPENDENT ON JESUS – Vss. 18-20

BOTH WERE DELIVERED – Vss. 21-25

**************************************************************************

Acts 18:2-3 etc.

AQUILA AND PRISCILLA - LOVE PARTNERS IN MINISTRY

THEY WERE IN HARMONY - Acts 18:2-3, 18, 26, Romans 16:3-5, 1 Corinthians 16:19, 2 Corinthians 4:19

They are mentioned in six different verses of the Bible and always together.

They evidently took the idea of being "one flesh" seriously, and worked closely together (Genesis 2:24). It is interesting however that Priscilla, called Prisca by Paul, is mentioned first four out of six times.  Perhaps she was the more out going or dominant of the two.

There are couples who work well together.  Theirs is a teamwork approach to ministry.

THEY WERE HOSPITABLE

They housed Paul - Acts 18:2-3

They received Apollos - Acts 18:26

At least two churches met in their homes. Romans 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:19

THEY WERE HELPFUL

They helped and protected Paul - Romans 16:3-4

They instructed Apollos - Acts 18:24-26

They probably helped to nourish two churches - Romans 16:5, 1 Corinthians 16:19

HEROES

ü     Who is your favorite fictional hero and why?

ü     Who are some of your heroes in real life, such as a sports figure, or some other famous person?

ü     Who is a hero to you that you know (or knew) personally?

ü     Who are some of your favorite Bible Heroes and why?

ü     Why is it good to have heroes?

ü     What should we remember about heroes?

I would like to share with you some things about my favorite heroes.  In real life my all time hero was my Pastor, Rev. George Headley. I am also realizing how much my Dad was also one of my heroes.  Some of my favorite Bible Heroes are listed below.

EZRA – HERO IN THE WORD

Ezra 7:10 - For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.

P  Notice that Ezra had a prepared heart to seek!

P  Ezra had three priorities. What were they and what do they mean?

P  Why should we have the same priorities today?

ABRAHAM – HERO OF FAITH

Romans 4:3 - For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Romans 4:20-21 - He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; [21] And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

J    What does faith have to do with our righteousness?

J    How do we stagger when we don’t believe?

J    Remember trusting God brings glory to God.

J    What are some of the promises found in God’s Word?

J    Are you fully convinced that God keeps His promises? How can you tell if you really are?

ELIJAH – HERO OF PRAYER

James 5:16-18 – Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. [17] Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. [18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

F   Why does God want us to pray?

F   What great things did Elijah accomplish when He prayed?

F   Why is it easy to give up before we have an answer to prayer?

F   To what extent is prayer needed if our church is going to grow.

HEZEKIAH – THE ROYAL HERO

2 Chronicles 31:20-21 - And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought that which was good and right and truth before the Lord his God. [21] And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

]    What were some of the qualities that made Hezekiah a good leader?

]    What was the secret to Hezekiah’s success?

2 Kings 18:3-5 - And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father did. [4] He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. [5] He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

]    Who, evidently, was Hezekiah’s hero? Why was that a good choice?

]    What were some of the things that Hezekiah did that pleased God?

]    What was Hezekiah’s most important quality?

THE LORD JESUS – THE ULTIMATE HERO

2 Corinthians 5:21 – For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

V     What was the greatest thing Jesus did for you?

V     In what ways was Jesus a good example in the way He lived on earth?

V     What should be the goal of our lives as Christians?

Luke 9:23-24 – And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

V     What does it mean to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus?

V     What are some of the characteristics of discipleship?

V     IS JESUS YOUR ULTIMATE HERO?

Ephesians 5:18-21 etc.

DON’T SETTLE FOR LESS

·        Tell us about a “bargain” you’ve seen that really wasn’t a bargain.

·        Tell us about a “bargain” you got in which you did not have to compromise quality for price.

·        In what ways do Christians “settle for less”, when they could have so much more?

We want to look tonight at some of the things that the Holy Spirit wants to give us if we allow the Him to control us.  Our trouble is that “we settle for less” and do not allow the Holy Spirit to control us.

BACKGROUND

Romans 8:9 - But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Ephesians 4:30 - And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

1 Corinthians 12:13 - For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

·        What’s the difference between being baptized with the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit?

·        How is being filled with the Spirit like being drunk?

·        How does one go about being filled with the Spirit?

·        Should we ask to be filled with the Spirit?

SUPERNATURAL PRAISE

Ephesians 5:18-19 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; [19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

·        What is it like when the Holy Spirit influences our worship?

·        What should be our behavior in public worship?

·        What should be our behavior in private worship?

SUPERNATURAL THANKSGIVING

Ephesians 5:20 - Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

·        Why is the Holy Spirit’s control necessary for us to obey this verse?

·        What are some of the different situations that make it difficult for us to be thankful?

·        How does giving thanks to God in the name of our Lord Jesus for all things give us perspective during hard times?

SUPERNATURAL SUBMISSION

Ephesians 5:21 - Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

·        Why is submission unnatural?

·        Should husbands ever submit to their wives in light of Ephesians 5:22?

·        How will supernatural submission revolutionize your life?

SUPERNATURAL VICTORY

Galatians 5:16 - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

·        What is the “lust of the flesh”?

·        Why do we have trouble with it?

·        How does walking in the Spirit give us victory over it?

SUPERNATURAL FRUIT

Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

1.     LOVE

·        How would you describe love that was controlled by God?

·        How can we tell that we are truly loving in any given situation?

2.     JOY

·        Does being joyful mean that we always like what’s going on?

·        What perspective does joy bring to our problems?

3.     PEACE

·        If we are filled by the Spirit what activity will we engage in that will help us be peaceful?  Philippians 4:6-7

·        How does the peace of God affect our testimony for Christ?

4.     LONGSUFFERING

·        Why do we need patience?

·        How does patience make you joyful?

5.     GENTLENESS

·       Gentleness means “kindness”.

·       Why does it take an act of God to make us kind?

·       How is Holy Spirit kindness different from the natural kindness that we sometimes show?

6.     GOODNESS

·        What good things will the Holy Spirit influence a Christian to do?  See Galatians 6:9-10

7.     FAITH

·        The word actually means “faithfulness”.

·        How will a Spirit filled Christian be faithful?

8.     MEEKNESS

·        Why is it a challenge to be humble?

·        How can we tell if we are humble?

·        What are some of the signs that a person is humble?

9.     TEMPERANCE

·        In what areas of life are we especially in need of self-control?

·        How does self-control help us feel better?
