Deuteronomy 12:1-9

WAYS OF WORSHIP,

OLD TESTAMENT TREASURES #5

You are in a worship service this morning!  You are here to give your adoration, your praise, your thanks to God!

My own understanding of the word worship means that worship is a heart response to God. I respond to all that God has done and all that He is. My way or response in worship is through reading, singing, praying, learning, and giving.

As we continue our search for Old Testament Treasures, I want you and I to consider some principles for worship which are outlined in Deuteronomy. The instruction given here to the children of Israel gives us some very definite hints as to what our worship should be like today. In this passage we see 4 Ways of Worship.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WORSHIP Vss. 1-4

Vs. 1 - These conditions were for Israel after she arrived in the Promised Land. This was how they should conduct the way they should worship.

While we have no need to do things the way they did as far as sacrifices and a specific geographical location for worship, there are principles which remain the same.

Vs. 2-3 - God is here making specific assignments in the way the worship should be carried out.                             God is a jealous God, and insists that it is He that is to be worshipped, HE AND HE ALONE! Exodus 20:1-5

WHAT GOD IS SAYING HERE IS:

·        THERE IS TO BE NO COMPROMISE

Matthew 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Jesus said no man can serve two masters.

Therefore, there is not to be worship of idols and worship of the living God. there is to be no double standard.

When we compromise, we lose, because both things we worship want us full time!

·        THERE IS TO BE NO ASSOCIATION

God had no intentions of there being a temple to idols and a synagogue, or church in the same town in Israel. There was to be no way that they should even be seen near an idol.

Everything contrary to true religion was to be destroyed.

Why was this so? God knew that Israel's hearts, as well as ours, have a bent towards worshipping idols.  And remember, an idol is not necessarily a statute of some kind. It is anything that we make more important than God in our lives.

God knew that if he allowed association, if He was tolerant with false religions, it wouldn't be long before the Israelites would be worshipping the wrong God.

·        THERE WAS TO BE NO SYMPATHY

Some people are sympathetic to false religions today.

And, while we are in this free land, we must allow everyone the right to chose their faith. However, we need not show sympathy to a false religion.

As I mentioned earlier, today we do not have wooden idols.

There are, however, many idols in our land today.

There is one idol which is prevalent among Christians, and non-Christians alike. It is an idol that each born-again Christian must be aware of, and deal with.

Worship of this idol has us in a state of compromise.

Worship of this idol has us in a state of sympathy.

Worship of this idol has us in a state of association.

This idol is the oldest idol in the book.  Turn please to Genesis 3:5-6.

Eve wanted to be as a God. Eve wanted to worship herself.

This is exactly what we are doing in our nation today, worshipping ourselves. It is called humanism, and it is being taught in our public schools, and is often practiced by you and I.

Humanism is self worship.

We should not compromise with ourselves.

We should not have sympathy for ourselves.

We should not associate ourselves with things that rob God of time, money or devotion. Luke 9:23

AREAS OF WORSHIP Vs. 5

GOD had appointed first the tabernacle, and then the temple as a point or place of worship for the Jewish people.

Today, God has appointed two places in specific where worship should take place. First there is the heart of the person who is saved. One who knows they are going to heaven because they have trusted Christ as Savior. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Ephesians 5:19-20, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Hebrews 13:15

The second place where worship can take place and should is in the local assembly, the church. Not the building, but wherever the saints are gathered for worship.

It was said of the early Christians in Acts 2:46-47,

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Every time we meet, it should be to worship the Lord.

Think of  the choruses and hymns as an expression of worship.

Think of learning the Word as an expression of worship.

Think of reading the Word as an expression of worship.

Think of prayer as an expression of worship.

Think of giving as an expression of worship.

ACTION IN WORSHIP Vs. 6

Many of us have learned to sit, soak, and sour in the pew, but real worship is going to mean participation that will cost you something.

There are three key words in Verse 6.

SACRIFICES

TITHES

OFFERINGS

They were not to come empty hand to worship.

·        SACRIFICES

The supreme sacrifice has been made.

Jesus Christ has paid for my sins.

There is no need to sacrifice in order to have sins forgiven and be saved. That sacrifice was made, I just need to believe it! 1 Peter 1:18-19, Ephesians 2:8-9

No, the sacrifice for salvation has been made.

We as believers have different sacrifices to offer, including our bodies, our time, our gifts, and our good works because we love the Lord for what He has done for us.

Remember this: Anything worth doing for the Lord will take sacrifice.

·        TITHES

I am convinced that under grace today we should give the ten percent that God required of the Israelites. Why? We have salvation in Him. Isn't our salvation worth paying a tithe? Isn't it worth giving something special?

·        OFFERINGS

Offerings are giving over and above our tithes.

Very often this church has been good at this, especially in giving for missions and special projects.

May it ever continue! This kind of giving, which is also sacrificial, expresses our real love for the Lord and His work. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

ATTITUDE IN WORSHIP Vs. 7

The attitude that is to be expressed before the Lord in worship is to be one of joy or praise.

When you and I come to worship, we are to come to the Lord thanking him and praising him for the blessings that he has given us.

Nehemiah tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Psalm 103:1-2 says, Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, [bless] his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his

benefits.

Beloved let's remember to come to church with a joyful attitude of worship.

Not preoccupied with ourselves.

Not angry.

Not worried.

Not day dreaming.

Not planning ahead.

Let’s heed the warning of Deuteronomy 28:47-48

Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; [48] Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the Lord shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WORSHIP

·        NO COMPROMISE

·        NO SYMPATHY

·        NO ASSOCIATION

AREAS OF WORSHIP

·        IN THE HEART

·        IN THE CHURCH

ACTION IN WORSHIP

·        SACRIFICES

·        TITHES

·        OFFERINGS

ATTITUDE IN WORSHIP

·        PRAISE

2 Chronicles 16

FALTERING AT THE FINISH LINE

King Asa had lived a good, Godly life and had seen God work many victories. 2 Chronicles, 14,15

However, as he got closer to finishing His life victoriously he faltered.

HUMAN RESOURCEFULNESS – Vss. 1-6

Instead of relying on God, as he had in the past, Asa hired soldiers to give him victory.

DIVINE REBUKE – Vss. 7-9

God sent the prophet Hanani to rebuke Asa.

ANGRY REACTION – Vss. 10-11

Instead of turning to God in repentance, Asa became angry with God’s prophet and threw him into jail.

STUBBORN REFUSAL – Vs. 12

Asa did not call on God when he had diseased feet.  He relied on his physicians instead.

Matthew 14:22-33

FAITH WALK

One of the greatest English speaking preachers who ever lived was Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He was known as the "Prince of Preachers", and from a young age pastored in London England at a church that became known as Metropolitan Tabernacle. His sermons are still read today, as well as his classic commentary on Psalms, "The Treasury of David".

The ministry of Sprugeon was almost stopped before it began when Spurgeon was 22 years old. In order to accommodate the crowds that wanted to hear him, Spurgeon had rented a secular music hall called "Surrey Gardens".  The place was packed out with a crowd of about 10,000 people.

Some pranksters yelled "Fire! Fire!" and panic resulted. In the confusion, 7 people were killed and thirty taken to the hospital.

Spurgeon was devastated by this tragedy. The press of that day tortured him in the newspapers. It looked like his ministry was ruined. He was taken to the home of a trusted friend to recuperate.

According to the Book, THE HIDDEN PRICE OF GREATNESS by Ray Beeson and Ranelda Mack Hunsicker, (C. 1991 by the authors, printed by Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois, pages 51-52) "Plunged into a pit of anguish, he sought comfort from God. None came. Tears and doubts filled his waking thoughts and nightmares filled his sleep. He opened his Bible in search of strength; it only deepened his grief. His prayers seemed to bounce off a sky of brass."

"In the second week after the incident, while Spurgeon walked in a small garden, a verse from the Bible came forcefully into His mind. 'Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him and gave Him a name which is above every name' (Philippians 2:9). The words bathed his soul and restored his faith.

"The name of Jesus became a strong tower of safety. Song burst from him, and the chains about his mind broke in pieces. He was free..."

Just two weeks after this tragedy, Spurgeon was once again preaching in his pulpit. His first text back was the same one that set him free.

This is not an unusual story. Every Christian faces times of trial. Faith gets weak. We begin to sink.

Such was the case of Peter in our text. At one of the greatest spiritual moments of his life, a faith walk, he began to sink.

This passage is a great text for teaching us to walk by faith.  Four times the Scriptures tell us "The just shall live by faith," and that includes not just faith for salvation, but faith for daily living.

Peter has much to teach us about faith, especially faith during trials.

BACKGROUND: Vss. 22-24

Jesus ordered his disciples into a boat and sent them to the opposite shore.

Jesus sent the crowd that had witnessed the "Feeding of the Five Thousand" home and went to a mountain to pray.

A terrible storm came up. Out on the sea, the disciples battled for their lives.

MOTIVATED FAITH - Vss. 25-28

During the night Jesus came to His disciples, walking on the water. Note his encouraging words in verse 27.

In verse 28, Peter asks if he can join Jesus on the water. Notice there is no rebuke, but rather encouragement for Peter to take this step of faith.  Notice also that Peter's faith was motivated by the Word of Christ. Our faith needs to be motivated by the Word of God.

MOVING FAITH - Vs. 29

Peter got out of the boat and actually walked on the water. He did it! Jesus was the one who gave him the strength to do this. He trusted the Lord Jesus for the strength.

Moving faith is better than stationary faith.

Moving faith says, "I will actively trust God and do whatever He wants me to do."

Stationary faith says, "Oh yes, God can do anything He wants, but I'll play it safe, and not take any chances." I don't believe that stationary faith is really faith at all!

MISDIRECTED FAITH - Vs. 30

As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus he was fine. But the moment he took his eyes off Jesus and put them on the problem, he began to sink. Whenever we take our eyes off of Jesus and put them on the problem we have, we will sink too.

MENDED FAITH - Vss. 30-33

Jesus mended the faith of Peter in four steps.

REQUEST - Vs. 30 - Peter needed to focus again on Jesus and ask for help.

RESCUE - Vss. 31, 32 - Jesus got him out of danger.

REBUKE - Vs. 31 - Peter was reprimanded for his doubt.

REVERENCE - Vs. 33 - The end result was that Jesus was worshiped. That should be the end result of our mended faith as well.

Luke 19:1-10

POOR LITTLE RICH MAN

Is there happiness in money?  If we were honest, we’d have to admit that we often think there is happiness in money. As Christians, we should realize that there is no real happiness in money.

1 Timothy 6:10 - For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Money can’t buy true friends.

Money can’t buy peace of mind.

Money can’t buy health.

Money can’t buy a contented family.

Money can’t buy happiness.

There is a man in the Bible who teaches this lesson.

His name is Zacchaeus. He was a rich man, but he was not a happy man.

He was short in stature, so I think of him as a “Poor Little Rich Man”.

The point of studying Zacchaeus this evening is not to discuss money. But rather to encourage us to be sensitive to the needs of those who are unsaved.

We want to be sensitive to the needs of the unsaved, because, as will see in a few minutes, our Master was sensitive to the needs of the unsaved.

True wealth is not based on how much money a person has in the bank or how much possessions he owns.  True wealth is based on the condition of that person’s soul.

Remember this: Any person rich or poor in this world and without Jesus is poor in the next world. They are facing eternal damnation.  Revelation 20:15

The story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10 is a story of contrasts.

THOUGH HE WAS RICH, YET HE WAS POOR

Vss. 1-2 – Zacchaeus’ name means “righteous one”.

He was not living up to his name.

The Jewish religious leaders of Jericho would not have considered Zacchaeus as righteous.

He was the chief tax collector.

Jericho was on a trade route. There would have lots of taxes to collect. Zacchaeus was the head of those who collected the taxes.  And although a tax collector could make a living and be honest, it was in not being honest, but in taking as much as possible, that generally made tax collectors rich men.

The Jews considered publicans, or tax collectors, as traitors.

This is because they were agents of the government that was ruling over them, the Roman Empire.  Tax collectors were despised by other Jews.

Zacchaeus’ occupation made him rich, but he was only a poor man.

Zacchaeus was poor in the things of God.

And let’s face it, when all is said and done, how wealthy we are in the things of God is all that will matter after we leave this life.

You might remember another rich man.  His ground was so productive that he had an over abundance. Luke 12:17-22

There are many today who are rich in this world’s goods, but not rich towards God.  We should be concerned about them.

And we must remember that there was a day when we were in the same boat.

Zacchaeus, like all of us, was born into spiritual poverty.

He was born a sinner, and like us lived the life of the sinner.

Now matter how good or how moral a person appears on the outside we are all sinners. Romans 3:10-18, 23

How do we know that sinners are poor? Ezekiel 18:4, Ephesians 2:1

Here was Zacchaeus, like every unsaved person you have ever met, poor without Christ.

Let us remember the plight of the unsaved.

If a man does not have Christ, no matter how nice a man or lady he or she may be, if a man does not have Christ, He has nothing! Mark 8:36

THOUGH HE SOUGHT, YET HE WAS FOUND

Vs. 3 – Zacchaeus was under conviction.

God, the Holy Spirit was already working on

            Zacchaeus.

Somehow Zacchaeus knew that Jesus had the answers to his problems.

Before Zacchaeus started to seek God, God started to seek Him.

The same is true today.  God, through His Spirit seeks men before they seek Him. John 16:8-11

And why did Jesus go to the cross?  He went to the cross on her behalf, seeking our well being.

Romans 5:8

If one of your friends has an unusual burden of guilt, an unusual desire to find out more about Spiritual things, perhaps the Holy Spirit is working on him to bring him to Christ.

Allow the Holy Spirit to use you to help bring him to the Savior.

Vs. 4 – Zacchaeus so wanted to see Jesus and couldn’t because he was short.

What was he to do?

He runs ahead and climbs a sycamore tree.

Here was a rich man, an important man.

Here was a man already despised by the Jews.

Here was a man who swallowed all his pride and gave up all his dignity so he could see Jesus.

Nothing was more important to him than seeing Jesus.

Notice something else. Zacchaeus was acting like a child. A child will humble himself. A child will simply trust. A child will not care so much about the crowd.

Luke 18:17 - Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

Yes, Zacchaeus humbled himself like a child to see Jesus.

You and I, even though we are saved, should do the same.

Vs. 5 – Zacchaeus was seeking.

Notice, however, that Jesus found Zacchaeus!

As we said a few moments ago, before we start to seek, God is seeking us.

Jesus came to Jericho to find Zacchaeus.

We kiddingly say that a guy chases a girl until she catches him.

We seek God until he catches us, because God was seeking us all along.

This is the only instance in the Gospels where Jesus invites Himself to dinner!  He is always at home with those who are truly seeking Him.

Vs. 6 – If Zacchaeus lacked dignity going up the tree, I’m sure he lacked it more coming down the tree.

But what did he care?

The Master was coming to his house!

THOUGH HE WAS HATED, YET HE WAS LOVED –

Vs. 7 – Jesus never did things to please the crowd.

Notice what the chief tax collector was called – a sinner!

He was hated by about everyone except fellow tax collectors, and the Lord Jesus.

You may be hated by every other person on earth, but you are loved by Jesus.

You probably know some pretty miserable unsaved sinners, those you don’t even talk to.  But let me tell you something. Jesus loves these people! 1 John 4:10

It’s about time that we started bringing the lovely Savior to some not so lovely sinners.

THOUGH HE GAVE, YET HE RECEIVED

After dinner, Zacchaeus made a statement.

Vs. 8 – Zacchaeus states that he is going to give half of what he owns to the poor. He had been amassing wealth, but now he realized that he didn’t need all that.

Zacchaeus also decided to make restitution with interest to those he knew he had cheated. There was definite change in his life.

Why this sudden, giving heart?

Vs. 9 – Zacchaeus decided to give because he had received.

Salvation had come to Zacchaeus’ house.

Was this because he decided to give away a fortune? No!

Giving away the fortune was proof that he had been saved.

Zacchaeus was doing what saved people do.

First, he was making things right was those he had wronged.

Second, he was laying up treasure in Heaven. Matthew 6:19-21

When a person puts their trust in Christ change will take place.

There will be a desire to make things right for past wrongs.

There will be a desire for the things of God.

There will be a desire to live correctly, because of what Christ has done.

We don’t change because we want to become Christians.

We change because we are Christians.

We change because God has changed us.

How did Zacchaeus change?

He became a “son of Abraham”.

We don’t mean he became a physical descendent of Abraham. He already was that.

He became a Spiritual descendant, one who followed Abraham’s example of faith. Romans 4:3, Romans 4:11, Galatians 3:9

Now the whole passage is summed up in verse 10.

For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Jesus went to Jericho to find Zacchaeus, the one who was lost.

He is still seeking and saving the lost today.

We claim to be His followers.

How can we do less and claim to follow Him and have His concerns at heart?

Zacchaeus was the poor little rich man.

THOUGH HE WAS RICH, YET HE WAS POOR

THOUGH HE SOUGHT, YET HE WAS FOUND

THOUGH HE WAS HATED, YET HE WAS LOVED –

THOUGH HE GAVE, YET HE RECEIVED

John 11

LESSONS DURING HEARTBREAK

(A complete lesson)

·        What is the biggest heartbreak you have ever seen or experienced?

·        What are some of the different types of heartbreak that people experience?

·        How can heartbreak ruin someone?

·        How can heartbreak help someone?

We turn our attention to a familiar story that pictures the heartbreak of two sisters, Martha and Mary, who lost their brother, Lazarus, to death.  There are some valuable lessons for us to learn here.

JESUS LOVES US DURING OUR TRIALS – Vss. 1-5

·        Why did Mary and Martha send for Jesus?

·        What was evident about their perception of Jesus?

·        How can all sickness in a Christian, even if it results in death, bring glory to God?

·        How is verse 5 a good reminder to us?

JESUS LETS US WAIT FOR HIS PERFECT TIMING Vss. 6-16

·        Why did Jesus delay His departure for Bethany? Vs. 6

·        What would Mary and Martha have thought concerning Jesus’ delay?  Often we think the same sort of things.

·        Jesus gave His reason for going to Bethany in spite of the obvious danger.  He was to wake Lazarus out of the sleep of death. Vss. 7-15

·        Why is God’s perfect timing always exciting?

·        Why do we get nervous, worried, and upset when we must wait for God?  What is the solution to that problem?

JESUS LEADS US TO BETTER UNDERSTANDING – Vss. 17-27

·        Why do you think Martha rushed out to meet Jesus?

     Vss. 18-20

·        Why do you think Mary did not go out to meet Jesus? Vs. 20.

·        What do verses 21-22 tell you about Martha’s faith?

·        What was Jesus predicting in verse 23?  How was Martha interpreting His statement in verse 24?

·        How would Martha be comforted by Jesus’ words in Vss. 25-26, even if Lazarus hadn’t risen from the dead.

·        Why did Martha need a better understanding of the situation and of the Lord Jesus?

·        How does Jesus lead us to better understanding in times of sorrow?

·        Why is Martha’s statement in verse 27 so precious?

JESUS LONGS FOR US WHEN WE HURT – Vss.

28-37

·        Why do you think Martha privately told Mary that Jesus was there? Vs. 28

·        How was Mary’s response to Jesus different than Martha’s?  Why? Vss. 29-32

·        Why do you think Jesus was troubled? Vss. 33-34

·        Why did Jesus weep when He knew that He would raise Lazarus from the dead?  How is His weeping an encouragement to us?

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·        How would you respond to the words of Jesus’ critics in verses 36-37?

JESUS LEAVES NO DOUBT ABOUT HIS POWER – Vss. 38-45

·        What does Martha’s response in verse 39 tell you about her understanding of Jesus’ previous words to her?

·        How was Jesus’ response to Martha a real challenge? Vs. 40

·        Why is our faith necessary for God to work? Matthew 13:58, Hebrews 3:18-19, Hebrews 11:6

·        How does Jesus manifest His power in our times of sorrow?

·        Why did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? Vss. 41-42

·        What lesson is found in the fact that Jesus had others remove the grave clothes? Vss. 43-44

·        How would Mary and Martha have felt?

·        How can God’s power in our trials help unbelievers? Vs. 45?

This is an Expanded presentation of an outline which appeared in Sermon Seeds G11.

**********************************************************************************

Ephesians 1:3-7

IN CHRIST

Here is a brief list of some of the blessings for each Christian who is "in Christ".

In Christ:

I AM COMPLETE - Vs. 3 - I am blessed with "all spiritual blessings".

I AM CHOSEN - Vs. 4 - Because I am in Christ, I have been chosen to stand before God as "holy and without blame before him in love."

I AM GOD'S CHILD - Vs. 5

I AM CONFIDENT - Vs. 6 - I am confident because I have been "accepted in the beloved."

I AM CLEANSED - Vs. 7

Sermon Seeds B44

2 John

A WORD OF WARNING

Even the strongest churches need warnings.  Warnings help keep the saints alert and active in resisting error.  The apostle John, referred to as the "elder", is the human author of this letter. He is writing to the "elect lady and her children", which is, evidently, a local church.

COMPLIMENTS - Vss. 1-4

John expresses his love in Verses 1-2.

He wishes them mercy and peace in Verse 3.

He rejoiced when he heard that the church was "walking in truth"(Vs.4).

COMMANDMENTS - Vss. 5-6

They were to continue to walk in his commandments, specifically the commandment to love one another.

CAUTION - Vss. 7, 9

There are deceivers around who do not have the correct doctrine of Christ.

CONDUCT - Vss. 8, 10-11

The church should hold to correct doctrine, for fear of losing reward. Vs. 8

False teachers are not to be entertained as brothers in Christ. Vss.10-11

CONCLUSION - Vss. 12-13

John hoped to visit soon.

He sent greetings from a "sister" church.
