Ruth 1:1-18

KISS OR CLING?

Naomi had two daughters in-law.  The big difference between them was that Orpah was a “kisser” and Ruth was a “clinger”.  Orpah showed some affection for her mother in-law and then left her.

Ruth clung to her mother in-law and went with her as Naomi returned to the Land of Israel.

In Christian circles there are two groups.

There are the “kissers” of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are the “clingers” to our Lord Jesus Christ.

(You will need to read and explain verses 1-7 for background information.)

THE KISSER

Vss. 8-10 – Naomi released her daughter in-laws from any obligation to her.  Both, for the moment, said they would still stick with Naomi.

Vss. 11-13 – Naomi makes it clear exactly how dire the situation is and encourages them to go back home.

Vs. 14 – Having heard more information, Orpah kisses Naomi, cries some more, and leaves.

There are many “kissers” like Orpah in Christianity.

They make a commitment of sorts, but their pattern is to kiss and leave.

They kiss Jesus on Sunday and leave Him for a commitment to the World and their own pleasures and interests during the week. 1 John 2:15-17

THE CLINGER

Vs. 14 – Oprah kissed, Ruth clung.

Vs. 15 – I think Naomi is testing Ruth here to make sure that she is sincere.

Vss. 16-17 – Ruth’s response is classic and shows us how we should cling to the Lord Jesus.

Ruth 1:16-17 - And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: [17] Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

A. RUTH CLUNG TO FOLLOW - for whither thou goest, I will go

To cling to the Lord Jesus we should be able to say, for whither thou goest, I will go.

Luke 9:23-24

B. RUTH CLUNG TO DWELL - and where thou lodgest, I will lodge:

We should dwell with the Lord Jesus by abiding in Him. John 15:1-7

C. RUTH CLUNG TO FELLOWSHIP - thy people shall be my people,

The people of the Lord Jesus should be our people.  We should have fellowship with fellow believers.

John 13:34-35, Hebrews 10:24-25, Ecclesiastes 4:9-11

D. RUTH CLUNG TO WORSHIP - and thy God my God:

When we trust Christ we will recognize the Trinity, and we are to worship. Psalm 100

E. RUTH CLUNG TO DIE - Where thou diest, will I die,

Jesus died on the cross.  According to Romans 6, we died with Him.  Also see Galatians 2:20.

Vs. 18 – Naomi finally accepted Ruth’s position. They traveled together. Ruth was submissive to

Naomi, and eventually Ruth married Boaz and became a descendent of the Lord Jesus.

Mark 9:14-29

OVERWHELMED!

There are jobs for us to do and problems for us to face that make us feel so overwhelmed. In ourselves we do not have the strength to solve them.  While Jesus, Peter, James and John where away (See Vss. 1-13), the other disciples are faced with a challenge that leaves them overwhelmed.

A GREAT DILEMMA - Vss. 14-18 - They could not heal.

A GREAT DEMAND - Vs. 19 - Bring the problem to the Lord.

A GREAT DESIRE - Vss. 20-22 - The man was desiring help from Jesus.  We should have that same desire, and not try to tackle the problem ourselves.

A GREAT DISTINCTIVE - Vss. 23-24 - The great distinctive, or quality which Jesus requires is faith.

A GREAT DELIVERANCE - Vss. 25-29

Hebrews 6:13-20

IN GOD WE TRUST

LESSON #12 in Hebrews – A complete study

s        What public figures do you trust and why?

s        What public figures do you not trust and why?

s        Name a personal friend that you trust and why.

s        Why can God be trusted above all others?

s        Why do we Christians fail to trust God when we should?

At a time when the Hebrew Christians were having their faith challenged, the author of Hebrews reminds them that God can be trusted in Hebrews 6:13-20.

Hebrews 6:12 tells them, “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” He follows this verse up with the example of Abraham who discovered that God can be trusted.

GOD’S COMMITMENT TO ABRAHAM – Vss. 13a - 14

ü     Who was Abraham?  What were God’s initial promises to Him?

Genesis 12:1-3 - Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: [2] And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: [3] And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

ü     Abraham had many challenges in his life.  But the biggest challenge was offering up Isaac as a sacrifice. Genesis 22:1-14

ü     After Abraham had successfully passed the test, God made the promise found here in Vs. 14.

Genesis 22:15-18 - And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, [16] And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: [17] That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; [18] And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

ü     In what ways has Abraham’s seed been multiplied?

ü     How have all the nations been blessed?

Galatians 3:8-9 - And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. [9] So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

ABRAHAM’S CONFIDENCE IN GOD – Vs. 15

·        What is necessary for one to “patiently endure” as Abraham did?

·        During what situations did Abraham patiently endure?

·        How do we bolster our faith when that faith is being tested?

·        What Scripture verses do you know that tell you to put your confidence in God?

GOD’S CONFIRMATION TO ABRAHAM – Vss. 13b-16-17

F   What is an oath?

F   Was it ever necessary for God to swear?  Why did he He swear? See

     Vs. 17.

F   Why is an oath the end of all strife as Vs. 16 states?

F   What tangible oath or pledge has God given to believers?

Ephesians 1:14 - Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

OUR CONSOLATION IN CHRIST – Vss. 18-20

Ø     What are the two immutable things referred to in Vs. 18?

Ø     What is the strong consolation found in verse 18? Why is this a comfort?

Ø     How have Christians “fled for refuge”?

Ø     What is the hope set before us?

Ø      Where is our hope anchored?  Who is already there? Vss. 19-20

Ø     Why is Jesus’ high priesthood a comfort?

1 John 1:3-4

BONDED!

Real Christianity #2 (Second in 1 John series)

There are people you have bonded with.  You probably have close friends who you have joined together with in a close friendship. You would be willing to join together with them in any endeavor because you trust them and know that they are interested in your well-being.

The Bible uses another word for bonding.  The word is fellowship.  Now, when we think of fellowship, we think of having coffee or food of some kind and shooting the breeze for a while. We think of camaraderie.  While that is indeed enjoyable, true fellowship goes deeper than that.

John Phillips – The word used for ‘fellowship’ here is koinonia, meaning communion, sharing, having things in common.” John Phillips, Exploring the Epistles of John, (Grand Rapids MI, Kregel Publications) p.30

When there is fellowship there is a sharing going on around things that all have in common.  It is a bonding together in partnership.

In order to be real Christians, those which are not phony or shallow, we must be people who bond or have fellowship.

John wrote 1 John so his readers would bond together or have fellowship.  According to this passage, there is a three-fold bonding that is to take place:

Why should you want that kind of bonding or fellowship?

Verse 4 tells you why, that your joy may be full.

You can not have true joy in your life unless you have true fellowship.

You might have all sorts of substitutes for joy, but you will not know real joy until you have this three-fold fellowship or bonding.

Real joy is found in bonding with God the Father, God the Son, and with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are also bonding with God the Father and God the Son.  It is God the Holy Spirit who does this bonding. 1 Corinthians 12:13

BONDING WITH THE FATHER

and truly our fellowship is with the Father,

John talks about having fellowship with God.

He is talking about a partnership, a having in common, a communion with God.

Right away there is a problem.  What do I have in common with God?  On what basis can I form a partnership with God?

God is just or righteous, I am not.  I am a sinner.

God is holy, set apart from sin. I am not.

God is perfect, I am not.

Because of my sin, I have trouble having any thing in common with God.

God has solved my problem. It is the first step in bonding with God.

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING WITH A PARENT

God knew that we would have a problem with sin.

God knew that we would never be just or righteous enough to have fellowship with Him without His help.

That’s why he sent his Son to die for our sins, so He could declare us as righteous or just have fellowship with Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:9

Not only are we justified, declared righteous and fit for fellowship based on his shed blood, but also on the basis of our personal faith commitment, our trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior. Romans 5:1

The moment we trust Christ as Savior a bonding takes place that is absolutely amazing and wonderful.  We are born into the family of God.  We become God’s children in the most intimate of ways.

John 1:12-13, Romans 8:15

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAISE

One of the ways we bond with the Father is by giving Him the praise that He deserves.

I will have fellowship with the Father, as I direct my mind, heart, and words centered on Him and not me. Hebrews 13:15, Psalm 96:1-2, Psalm 47:6-7

We bond with the Father as we worship Him.  Sometimes we don’t feel close to God because we have not developed that attitude of worship.

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAYER

We can’t have fellowship, bonding, unless there is communication.  We have been called into a wonderful, personal communication with God through prayer.  And we come to God in prayer because we have someone in common, His Son.  We pray in Jesus’ name, in his authority.

John 16:24, 1 Peter 5:7

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PURPOSE

When I bond with my Heavenly Father, I have the same purpose as God.  What is God’s purpose?  God’s purpose is to bring glory to Himself. Psalm 42:8

BONDING WITH THE SON

and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

·        BONDING WITH THE SON IS BONDING WITH MY LORD

Somebody is going to be boss in my life.  Will it be me?

Will it be some other person!  Will it be a bad habit, a hobby, a sport, my job or money?

Or will it be the LORD JESUS? John 13:13, John 12:24-26

To be fruitful and to bond with Jesus we must die to ourselves and He must be Lord.  We hate our own lives so we might serve and follow the Lord Jesus.

Jesus is Lord, but you won’t bond with Him unless you acknowledge His Lordship and authority over you!

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH MY HIGH PRIEST

Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. [15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH HIS POWER

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

BONDING WITH THE SAINTS

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us:

We live in an age when the church has stopped binding together.  People come and go Sunday after Sunday, but few have real fellowship with each other.

So how do we bond together with fellow believers, the saints?

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS, WE SHARE!

We share with other saints, by worshipping together.

We share with other saints as we share our testimonies. This we do on Sunday nights.

We share with other saints as we talk to them, let them share our burdens, and share our burdens with them.

We share with saints as we encourage them. Hebrews 10:24-25

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS WE SERVE!

We all have Spiritual gifts that God has given us.  We are not to be selfish with these gifts, but we are to serve each other with these gifts.

The singer shares his or her gifts.

The teacher shares his or her gifts.

The pastor shares his gifts.

The person who has practical skills shares his or her gifts.

Every Christian has something he or she can do to serve. Galatians 5:13

Another way we serve is through our prayers for each other. Ephesians 6:18

Still another way we share is by working together to take the Gospel to the world.  We do this through missions giving and going ourselves, at least to our neighbor.

We need to partner together to get the Gospel out.

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS IS TO SHOW!

John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

JUST AS I AM

In honor of Ethel Peters 8/25/22-9/24/04

If you would like the complete notes of this sermon, please email me at jpeters@alltel.net.

If you have attended this church or other evangelical churches for very long, you are undoubtedly familiar with the hymn that we just sung, Just as I am.  The words were written in 1836 by Charlotte Elliot and the music we sing this hymn to was written by William Bradbury.

Miss Charlotte Elliott was visiting some friends in the West End of London, and there met the eminent minister, César Malan. While seated at supper, the minister said he hoped that she was a Christian. She took offense at this, and replied that she would rather not discuss that question.

Dr. Malan said that he was sorry if had offended her, that he always liked to speak a word for his Master, and that he hoped that the young lady would some day become a worker for Christ.

When they met again at the home of a mutual friend, three weeks later, Miss Elliott told the minister that ever since he had spoken to her she had been trying to find her Saviour, and that she now wished him to tell her how to come to Christ. “Just come to him as you are,” Dr. Malan said. This she did, and went away rejoicing. Sankey, Ira David. My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns. Harper & Brothers, 1906.

About the words or this hymn her brother said: “In the course of a long ministry, I hope I have been permitted to see some of the fruit of my labor, but I feel that far more has been done by a single hymn of my sister’s.” http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/u/justasam.htm

Just As I Am is one of those Gospel hymns that has been used as what we call an “invitation hymn”.

It is generally sung at the end of a service and is used to invite people to trust Christ as Savior.  This hymn also encourages Christians to bring their problems to their Savior.

This hymn has a great Biblical message.

The theme of this hymn is “I Come”.  There are five verses that we use of this hymn.  Each one stresses a different aspect of coming.

VERSE 1 – I COME WITH ONE PLEA

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 2 – I COME FOR COMPLETE PURIFICATION

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 3 – I COME WITH MANY PROBLEMS

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 4 – I COME FOR GREAT PROVISION

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 5 – I COME BECAUSE OF GREAT PROMISES

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

This hymn was my Mom’s favorite!
