2 Kings 5

STEADY REASONING

Life of Elisha, The Steady Prophet #6 of 9

We as Christians are expected to demonstrate steady reasoning. That is we should have the ability, with God's help, to think things out clearly and logically.

2 Kings 5 presents us with a good example of the importance of steady reasoning. The way people reacted to the leprosy of Naaman and his appeal for healing give us some examples of good thinking and examples of bad thinking. Our outline shows us types of thinking that lead to steady or not so steady reasoning.

BACKGROUND - One of the enemies of Israel at this time was Syria. According to verse 1, the general of the Syrian army was a man named Naaman. The Lord, who controls governments, had given a great deliverance to Syria through Naaman. His name means "pleasant". Naaman was stricken with the dreaded disease of leprosy. Leviticus 13:3, 45-46

FAITHFUL THINKING - Naaman's Maid - Vss. 2-3

The Syrians had sent raiding parties into Israel. The little maid was taken captive and made a slave to Naaman's wife.

Instead of being bitter, she was faithful to God and to those in need in her thinking.

She spoke of Elisha, the prophet, who she felt could heal Naaman.

FEARFUL THINKING - The King of Israel - Vss. 4-7

Naaman himself reported the words of the maid to the King of Syria.

He sent expensive gifts and a letter to the King of Israel, requesting that Naaman be healed.

When the King of Israel received the letter, he panicked, and was sure that the King of Syria was trying to pick a fight.  Instead of relying on God, the King was overtaken with fear!  This is a king of thinking which we also need to avoid.  Proverbs 29:25

FEARLESS THINKING - Elisha - Vss. 8

Elisha the Prophet was not afraid. His confidence was in God.  He simply sent to the King of Israel asking him why he was so upset, and assured him that he, God's prophet would handle the matter. I'm sure the king gladly sent Naaman to Elisha. Isaiah 41:10

FAULTY THINKING - Naaman - Vss. 9-12

Elisha didn't even come out to meet Naaman when he arrived.

He simply sent a messenger to Naaman and told him to go wash in the river Jordan seven times.

Naaman got upset.  He thought Elisha would heal in a more dramatic way. Vs. 11.

He was upset that he had to wash in the Jordan and not a river in his own country.

He was in a rage because things weren't going the way he planned.  Sound familiar?

FACTUAL THINKING - Naaman's Servants - Vss. 13-14

Naaman's servants reasoned with him, and convinced him that the prophet was not asking for much.  It was simple request. Naaman should do it.

Naaman did as he was told and was healed.

FINANCIAL THINKING - Gehazi - Vss. 15-26

A grateful Naaman offered gifts to Elisha. Elisha refused.

Gehazi, Elisha's servant, chose to deceive Naaman and take some of the gifts.

Gehazi was judged for his sin of greed. 1 Timothy 6:10

Psalm 85:6

REVIVE US AGAIN!

Psalm 85:6 - Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

“The word ‘revive’ simply means ‘to live again, to be renewed in life.’” Warren Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary/Wisdom and Poetry, (Colorado Springs, Colorado, Victor, Cook Communications Ministries, 2004) p. 244

“To bring back to life or consciousness; resuscitate.” American Heritage Dictionary

WHO CAN BE REVIVED?

·        THE DISAPPOINTED CAN BE REVIVED

·        THE DEPRESSED CAN BE REVIVED

·        THE DISOBEDIENT CAN BE REVIVED

Proverbs 6:16-19 - These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: [17] A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [18] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, [19] A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

·        THE DEFEATED CAN BE REVIVED

Romans 7:19 - For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

·        THE DISTRACTED CAN BE REVIVED

Jeremiah 2:13 - For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

·        THE DEAD CAN BE REVIVED

Ephesians 2:1 - And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

HOW CAN WE BE REVIVED?

Rev. 2:4-5 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. [5] Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

·        RETURN

Rev. 2:4 – You left, you need to come back!

·        REQUEST

Wilt thou not revive us again:

·        REMEMBER

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen

·        REPENT

James 4:4 - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

James 4:8-10 - Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. [9] Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. [10] Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

·        REPEAT

and do the first works;

·        REJOICE

Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Mark 10:32-45

TWO AGENDAS

One version of Webster's Dictionary defines the word "agenda" as, "(a) program of things to be done."  An agenda can be written in one's mind or written down on paper.  It is a plan for action, often used in meetings.

We all have our agendas. Often our agendas conflict with the agendas of others. On a Saturday, a husband's agenda might include fishing in the morning, napping in the afternoon, and bowling at night.  His wife's agenda for him on the same day might be washing windows in the morning, shopping in the afternoon, and attending a dinner party at night.

It is normal for each of us to have conflicts with others concerning agendas, because most of the time our agendas are different.  Often our agendas conflict with the agenda our Lord has set for us.  When that conflict occurs, we know the Lord is right.

In our text we see two agendas. There is the Lord's agenda, and there is the agenda of the disciples.

THE LORD'S PROGRAM Vss. 32-34

A. Suffering Vss. 32-34

B. Service Vs. 45

THE DISCIPLES PLANS

A. Glory Vss. 35-37

Although the Lord was telling them all along that He was going to die in Jerusalem, the disciples were still expecting Him to set up His kingdom right them.  James and John wanted the prominent positions in the kingdom. They were looking for the glory.

B. Greatness Vs. 41, Mark 9:33-34

The other disciples were upset with James and John. Each considered himself to be the greatest.

THE LORD'S PRONOUNCEMENT

Here our Lord tells the disciples what brings about greatness in the Kingdom. He tells them to:

A. Suffer - Vss. 38-39

Jesus asks James and John if they can drink the same cup and experience the same baptism of suffering that he would experience.

They answered "Yes", and indeed they did.

B. Serve - Vss. 41-45

The greatest in the Lord's Kingdom are the ones who are the best servants. The truly great servant in his Master's eyes are the one's who serve unselfishly.

What is your agenda? Is it greatness and glory or suffering and service?

CHANGES

Christianity is a religion of change (2 Corinthians 5:17).  Some of the key doctrines of Christianity involve change.

REPENTANCE IS A CHANGE OF PURPOSE

Luke 15:18 - I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

1 Thessalonians 1:9 - For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

SALVATION IS A CHANGE OF POSITION

Ephesians 2:5-8 - Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) [6] And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: [7] That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. [8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

JUSTIFICATION IS A CHANGE OF STATE

Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

ADOPTION IS A CHANGE OF FAMILY

Ephesians 1:5 - Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

REDEMPTION IS A CHANGE OF MASTERS

Ephesians 1:7 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

You belong to the one who redeemed you!

SANCTIFICATION IS A CHANGE OF LIFE STYLE

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 - And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. [24] Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

CONSECRATION IS A CHANGE OF WILL

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
