WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO ME

Various Texts

It is again Christmastime. Again I am expected to preach about Christmas. In this message, I would like to share with you a little of what Christmas means to me personally. This is what Christmas means to me:

GOD GAVE THE GIFT OF HIS SON. I HAVE ACCEPTED THE GIFT. - John 1:14, John 3:16

MARY TRUSTED GOD. I AM TO TRUST GOD. - Luke 1:26-28

Mary's situation would be very tenuous. She knew she was a virgin. Those around her, including Joseph (for a while) would not believe. She chose to trust God through this difficult time. Pay special attention to Luke 1:38. I am to have the same complete trust in God. Proverbs 3:5-6

JOSEPH OBEYED GOD. I AM TO OBEY GOD. - Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph was going to give Mary a quiet divorce (Because they were engaged they were viewed as married.). God intervened. The Angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. He obeyed. Later, when God gave further instructions, Joseph continued to obey. Matthew 2:13-24, 19-23  May I also practice obedience to God. 1 Samuel 15:22-23

THE ANGEL PROCLAIMED JOY.  I AM TO BE JOYFUL. - Luke 2:8-14, Philippians 4:4,

Galatians 5:22

THE ANGELS PROCLAIMED PEACE. I AM TO BE PEACEFUL. - Luke 2:14, Philippians 4:6-7, Isaiah 26:3-4

THE WISE MEN BROUGHT GIFTS. I AM TO BRING GIFTS - Matthew 2:11-13, 2 Corinthians 9:7, Galatians 2:20

Hebrews 6:1-3

GOING ON

This outline was used by me at a Baptism service. Baptism is not the end of a Christian’s experience, it is at the beginning!  Therefore, we are not to remain as babies, but to go on to perfection, that is, maturity.

Hebrews 6:1-3 - Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, [2] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. [3] And this will we do, if God permit.

GO IN!

·        GO IN FOR LEARNING

2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

·        GO IN FOR LEANING

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

·        GO IN FOR LIVING

Psalm 119:11 - Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

GO OUT!

·        GO OUT TO SERVE

Ephesians 2:10  -  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Galatians 6:10 - As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

·        GO OUT TO SHARE

Matthew 28:19-20 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

GO UP!

Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

John 15:16 - Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

GO DOWN!

Luke 9:23-24 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Hebrews 10:19-25

IN THE FAMILY

Hebrews Lesson #19 (A complete message)

·        Why is your family important to you?

·        Why is being part of a family a great blessing?

·        Why is being part of a family a great challenge?

·        How is being part of the family of God a great blessing?

·        How is being part of the family of God a great challenge?

As we continue our study of Hebrews, we are entering the “practical” side of the book.  The whole Book is practical, but from here to the end of the chapter the author is emphasizing practical Christian living.  Hebrews 10:19-25 shows us some things that we should not only do as individuals but as God’s family as well.

FAMILY POSSESSIONS

1. We Have Boldness. Vss. 19-20

V     What makes people hesitant to enter into the presence of Almighty God?

V     How often did the High Priest enter the “Holy of Holies”?  When was there great relief concerning the High Priest on the Day of Atonement?

V     When we enter “the holiest” what are we doing?  How often and on what basis do we come?  How is it a “new and living way”?

V     What happened to the veil around the “Holy of Holies” when Jesus died and what was this a picture of?  Mark 15:38

V     When can we have boldness when we come before God’s presence?  Is it possible to be too bold, and if so, how?

V     In what ways are Christians not bold enough when they come before God?

2. We Have A High Priest. Vs. 21

v    Why is having a High Priest before God necessary?

v    Why is having a High Priest before God comforting?

v    Why is having a High Priest before God challenging?

v    How broad is the ministry of Jesus as the High Priest?

v    What should we remember about our brothers and sisters in Christ and their access to the High Priest?  How will this affect our attitude towards believers with whom we have disagreements?

v    How confident should a believer feel when he comes before God?

FAMILY PRACTICES

1. Let us draw near - Vs. 22

P  Where should we want to run constantly, or better yet, abide?

P  What is a “true heart”?  Think of what it means to be true to a lover.

P  What is the difference between assurance and full assurance when it comes to faith?  Can you think of other Bible verses that tell you that faith is essential when one approaches God?

P  How can our hearts be sprinkled from an evil conscience?

1 Corinthians 6:11 - And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

P  In what ways have our bodies been “washed with pure water”?

2. Let us hold fast - Vs. 23

6       The word “profession” has been translated “confession”.

6       The word “faith” in this verse means “hope”.

6       How can you tell when a Christian loses hope?

6       What causes a Christian to lose hope?

6       What is said in verses 19-21 that should cause a Christian to maintain hope?

6       What is said in verse 23 that should cause a Christian to maintain hope?

6       What are two ways a Christian confesses his hope?

6       What is a church like when everyone has hope?

3. Let us consider - Vss. 24-25

ê    What great commandment will be fulfilled when we obey verse 24?

ê    How can we provoke others to love and good works?

ê    Why should Christians want to “assemble themselves”?

ê    What usually motivates Christians to “assemble themselves”?

ê    How would churches be different if we all came to church with the proper motive?

ê    What day is approaching that we should be looking forward to and encouraging others toward?

1 John 2:12-14

WORD WISE

Real Christianity # 7 (Studies in 1 John)

The Bible is a tremendous Book.

The Bible is God’s Book.

We are wise when we love this book.

We are wise when we learn this book.

We are wise when we live this book in obedience.

The words “I write” appear 4 times in the King James Translation of this passage.  The words “I have written” appear two times.  What was John writing?  He, under the

Inspiration of the Holy Spirit, was writing Scripture.  He was writing part of the Bible.

·        He was writing to people who had already been made wise by the right use of the Word of God.

·        He was writing to people who needed to be made wiser by the right use of the words that he was writing, also the Word of God.

No matter where we are in our Spiritual development we need to be “Word Wise”, or wise in our use of Scripture.

In this passage we discover that the Word or Scriptures, or the Bible is for three groups of people.

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SAVED

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE STRONG

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SETTLED

John appears to be talking to three groups of people at various stages of their development in their Christian Lives, “Little Children”, “Fathers”, and “Young Men”.  And yet, all three stages should be true for all Christians at all times.

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SAVED

I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

The “little children” had already been made wise by the Word of God.  They had been born into the family of God by the Spirit of God who uses the Word of God. Galatians 3:24, 2 Timothy 3:15, 1 Peter 1:23

The little children were being written Scripture because their sins had been forgiven “for His name’s sake”.

We have sinned and failed God.  We don’t deserve to be in God’s presence, now or later in Heaven.

But God, in his love sent the Lord Jesus to die for us. Romans 8:6-8

Of course Jesus did not stay dead but arose from the dead and later ascended into Heaven.

Jesus died for our sins.  So when someone turns to Jesus Christ and believes on Him, he is forgiven for Jesus’ name’s sake. He is forgiven because of what Jesus has done. John 3:36

John says I’m writing to you because your sins are forgiven.

My friend, I repeat to you that John was writing under the inspiration of God.  He was writing God’s Word. He was writing Scripture.

If your sins have been forgiven for the sake of the name of Jesus, Scripture is for you.

You should be so appreciative for what Jesus has done for you that you want to hear everything that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit has to say to you.

As God’s “little children” there is something else true of us.

Not only are we forgiven for Jesus’ name’s sake, but we have known the Father.

1 John 2:13c - …I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

If you are truly saved, some wonderful things have happened to you.  Not only do you have forgiveness and eternal life, not only have you been “born again” by the Spirit of God, not only do you have the presence of God’s holy Spirit in your life, but God is truly your “Heavenly Father”!

John 1:12-13

If you have such a loving, caring, compassionate Heavenly Father, doesn’t it make sense to listen to what He has to say to you?

If you have such a wonderful Savior, doesn’t it make sense to listen to what He has to say to you?

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE STRONG

1 John 2:13b - I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one.

1 John 2:14b - I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

The young men have moved on in their walk with God.

The young men seem to be those who were in the thick of Spiritual battle.

The young men were those who were taking their commitment to Christ seriously.

There was good reason for John to write Scripture to these people.

These people were already strong spiritually. But please note that Spiritual strength does not mean we ever outgrow our need for the Word of God.  We don’t!

They were strong Spiritually because the Word of God was abiding in them.

It is when God’s Word abides in you, that you will be strong.

It is when God’s Word abides in you, that you will overcome the wicked one!

Who is the “wicked one”?

The wicked one is the devil, Satan.

Christians are warned in 1 Peter 5:8-9 - Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

We can only resist the devil when we are steadfast “in the faith”.

We can only be steadfast in the faith if we are steadfast in God’s Word.

Let us strive to be strong in the Word of God.

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SETTLED

1 John 2:13a - I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning….

1 John :14a - I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning…

I feel that the fathers in this passage are those who are older and more spiritually mature.

There was a time when they were little children in the faith.

There was a time when they were young men fighting the Spiritual battles.

Now they are settled.

Now they are mature.

They have a long record of knowing God, who himself is “from the beginning”, He is eternal.

But John is writing Scripture to them too!

They still needed the Word of God!

They still needed to be taught!

They still needed to memorize!

They still needed to mediate!

They still needed to grow!

Do you consider yourself to be among the settled, the mature as a Christian?

ê    YOU STILL NEED THE WORD OF GOD!

ê    YOU STILL NEED TO BE TAUGHT!

ê    YOU STILL NEED TO MEMORIZE!

ê    YOU STILL NEED TO MEDITATE!

ê    YOU STILL NEED TO GROW!

John wrote to three different groups of people.

He was writing Scripture, the Word of God.

He was writing to all Christians, no matter where they were on their Spiritual journey.  They all still needed the Word of God.

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SAVED

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE STRONG

THE SCRIPTURES ARE FOR THE SETTLED

The Scriptures are for you!

What are you doing with them?
