THE LOCAL CHURCH

1 Corinthians 1:2-3 - Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: [3] Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

The church in Corinth was a local church.

THE LOCAL CHURCH:

1.     Is in a location that is specific - Unto the church of God which is at Corinth…

1 John 3:11-18

TRUE LOVE – A.M. 1/30/05

Real Christianity #12 (1 John)

When true love is present it is a giving, special kind of love.

It is a love that demonstrates the feelings of the heart with action in the life.

Here are three brief examples of true love:

The new nature a believer in Christ has is the nature of God, the nature of Christ.  Part of that nature of God that we believers receive is that of true love, agape love, the highest form of love.  The passage we studied last ended in verse 10.

1 John 3:10 - In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

One who does not love his brother is not of God. He does not have God’s nature, the new nature. The one who does love his brother is born of God and does have a new nature.

This week we want to look at 1 John 3:11-18, where we find the characteristics of true love.  These characteristics should be present in your life if you profess to know Jesus as your Savior. So let’s look at the characteristics of true love:

TRUE LOVE REMEMBERS THE LORD'S COMMAND

1 John 3:11 - For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

The Apostle John is the human author of this Epistle. He was one of the first to follow Jesus as a disciple. John, an old man now, looks back to the days of his youth and remembers the teaching that Jesus gave “from the beginning”.  He probably remembered what Jesus said the night before he died.

John 13:34-35

Jesus gave the standard here.  We are to love each other as Jesus has loved us.

How much did Jesus love us? This much (stretch out hands)! When he stretched out his arms and let soldiers place the nails in his hands, and allowed them to crucify Him for our sakes, that was love!

Philippians 2:5-8

Now Jesus says, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

And what did Jesus say would be the result of our love for one another?

John 13:35 - By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

TRUE LOVE REJECTS HATRED - Vss. 12-15

John gives us a type of attitude to reject.  He gives us a negative example.

1 John 3:12 - Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

You’ve probably heard the story of Cain and Abel, the sons of  Adam and Eve.

They both brought sacrifices to God.

Abel brought a lamb as a sacrifice. This is what God had prescribed.

Cain brought vegetables from the garden.  This was not what God prescribed.

God accepted Abel’s sacrifice and rejected Cain’s.

As a result, Cain get angry.

So God told Cain in Genesis 4:6-7 - Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? [7] If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

All Cain had to do was what was right, and God would have accepted him just as He did Abel.

What was behind the hatred of Abel, and his subsequent murder? It was jealousy or envy. His brother’s works were righteous, accepted by God, and his were not.

Cain was jealous because God had accepted Abel’s sacrifice and not his own.

The pattern has not changed today.  People who are not righteous still hate those who are righteous because they are jealous.

1 John 3:13 - Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

It is possible for us to fall occasionally into the jealousy trap, even as Christians.

According to verse 12, true love does not act like Cain.

True love is not jealous.

1 John 3:14 - We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

We are talking habitual behavior in this verse.

If we have passed from death into life by being born again, by placing our faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and eternal life, we have a new pattern of behavior. 2 Corinthians 5:17

As part of our new pattern of behavior, we will show true love for the brethren.  The person who does not show a pattern of true love for his brother is abiding in death.

That means the person who constantly hates someone has never been saved, born again!

We are to reject hatred and embrace love!

1 John 3:15 - Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

Cain was guilty of murder.  But this verse says that a person who hates his brother is guilty of murder!

How could John say this?

He could say this because of what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 5:21-22

Anger without a cause meant judgment.

Calling someone an “empty headed fool” meant someone could go before the “supreme court” of the day, the Sanhedrin.

Calling someone a “cursed fool” puts a person in jeopardy of God’s judgment.

Hatred is murder that takes place in the heart.

Hating your neighbor and murdering him are equivalent sins in their motivation.

The difference is, the murderer has taken further action.

True love rejects hatred and opts to forgive. Ephesians 4:26-27

This means, Christian, there should be no room for hatred, for grudges, for permanent hard feelings. If you are truly saved, you will be forced to deal with these difficulties properly.

Ephesians 4:31-32

We are to forgive as Christ has forgiven us.  That kind of forgiveness is to be total.

TRUE LOVE REQUIRES SACRIFICE - Vs. 16

1 John 3:16 - Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Are there ever days when you wonder if God loves you?

When these days come, take a good, long look at 1 John 3:16.

How do we know that God loves us?

Because Jesus Christ gave the supreme sacrifice for us!

He gave the greatest gift of all! One that went to the cross and died for us!

How do you know that a Christian loves you, or that you love another Christian?

We know true love when we are willing to lay down our lives for others, or others are willing to lay down their lives for us.

Most of us will make some sacrifices for others.  We might even give some of our blood.  But I wonder, would we lay down our lives for other Christians.

It’s easy to say that we would sacrifice our lives for others, but unless the last characteristic of love is true for you, chances are you won’t.

TRUE LOVE REACHES OUT TO OTHERS

1 John 3:17 - But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

It seems to be that John is saying, “Don’t say that you’ll lay down your life, if you won’t lay down your wallet!”

True love shares what it has with others.

That’s what we were trying to do this morning when we took the offering for the tsunami victims.

John says that the one who has something to share, and doesn’t share it does not have the love of God dwelling in him. James 2:15-16, Ephesians 4:28

True love does not hoard, or invest only in personal pleasures. It shares with those who need it.

1 John 3:18 - My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Words are cheap. It costs very little to say, “I love you.”

It costs a whole lot more to live “I love you.”

It’s not wrong to tell someone that you love them.

It’s wrong to tell someone you love them and stop there!

The one who truly loves you sees your love in your actions.

You have reached out to them.

TRUE LOVE REMEMBERS THE LORD'S COMMAND

TRUE LOVE REJECTS HATRED

TRUE LOVE REQUIRES SACRIFICE

TRUE LOVE REACHES OUT TO OTHERS

1 JOHN 3:19-24 - PAGE 1

CONFIDENCE - PM 1/30/05

#13, Real Christianity (1 John)

We have a tendency toward insecurities and uncertainties. And most of us need more confidence than we have.  We don't need more confidence in ourselves. We need more confidence in God.

Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 7:18-19,

Because we are human

Because we are sinners

Because we have such great capacity to fail, we need a greater confidence than in ourselves.

We need a confidence not based on what we feel.

We need a confidence base on what God says.

This passage tells us how to have the right kind of confidence, the confidence that God is behind. It is confidence that God produces and sponsors.

CONFIDENCE OF HEART - Vss. 19-20

1 John 3:19 - And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

To be of the truth is to be of Jesus Christ. John 14:6

In Vs. 19 John tells us how to tell if we are of the truth, that is, how to tell if we've been born again.

He says "hereby we know we are of the truth". He is referring to the preceding verses.

The one is of the truth practices agape love.

Vs. 16 - It is a love that lays down its life for the brethren.

Vs. 17 - It is a love which sees a need and does something about it.

Vs. 18 - It is a love that is in deed and truth and not all mouth.

So John is saying that we have assured hearts when we actually demonstrate our salvation through the actions of Christian love.

Our actions of love build confidence of heart.

They assure our hearts that we are of Christ.

The fact that we practice Christian love gives assurance of salvation.

1 John 3:20 - For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

Another term for a condemning heart might be an accusing conscience.

Many times our conscience will accuse us rightly of sinfulness.

Then we are to confess our sins, and, as 1 John 1:9 says, we are forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness.

Sometimes, however, we have an over-active conscience. We do something wrong, confess it, and still live in guilt.

God is greater than our heart.

God knows when we have truly confessed and forsaken sin.

We need to leave what we have confessed behind.

There are other times, when we have been loving by way of action and striving to help others.  And yet it seems that we cannot get enough done to satisfy ourselves. Again, God is greater than our hearts, and knows when we have done our best.

CONFIDENCE WITH GOD - Vs. 21

1 John 3:21 - Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

A confident heart produces confidence with God.

When our heart is right, there is confidence toward God.

When our sin has been dealt with

When we know that we have been forgiven.

When we know that we have been loving by action and trying to do our best, so that God is speaking peace.

When we have confidence toward God we have freedom in His presence.  By freedom I do not mean that we are free to show disrespect in His presence.

Disrespect is shown when we rush into God's presence when it isn't necessary to rush.

Disrespect does not address God properly. I have a personal problem when the only way we know how to address our Lord is by His first name. He is our Lord. He is our Master. He is our Savior and we should address Him that way.

Freedom in the presence of God is not disrespect.

The confident Christian comes to God reverently.

The confident Christian comes to God in love.

The confident Christian comes to God respecting the entire Trinity.

There is reverence in God's presence but not a shaking in the boots type of fear.

There is no doubt that God will listen.

There is no hesitancy to be honest with God, even when we are hurting.

This word confidence actually carries the idea of “freedom of speech”.

It's a freedom of knowing that whatever you say, God will sort it out, correct us, ignore what's worth ignoring, and love us anyway.

CONFIDENCE IN PRAYER - Vss. 22-23

1 John 3:22 - And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

We sometimes think that what we can safely ask God for is limited.  And yet the spectrum of prayers that God answers is very broad. Matthew 7:7-8, John 14:13-14, Philippians 4:6

Why does God give us such a broad spectrum for prayer?

Why does God tell us to pray about so much?  "Everything" is so much!

It is because God, Himself, has a broad spectrum of concerns.

He is more concerned about missions than you are.

He is more concerned that you live a godly life than you are.

He is more concerned that Christians have fellowship than you are.

He is more concerned about lost souls than you are.

He is more concerned that you learn the Word of God than you are.

He is more concerned that your interpersonal relationships are right than you are.

He is more concerned that people are sick and hurting than you are.

Here is this caring, loving, compassionate, and yet just and righteous God who says that we can have confidence in prayer.

There are conditions to our praying.

When our heart is right with God we will not ask for those things which are ridiculous, or against God's prescribed will. James 4:3

And the one who asks in prayer, as it states here, should be walking with the Lord in obedience. We are to be keeping His commandments and doing things to please Him.

God does not answer prayer based on our works.

God, however, does not hear with a view of answering prayer when there is unconfessed sin in our lives. Psalm 66:18

Obedience is a condition for answered prayer.

Vs. 23 sums up when keeping His commandments means.

And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

First part of the summary is to believe on Christ.

1.     For salvation

2.     Praying in His name -  Believing that He approves in what we are praying for, and believing that it is because of His righteousness that God will answer prayer. John 14:13-14

The second part of the summary is to "love one another as he gave commandment." John 15:12

Don't expect God to answer prayer unless you pray in faith in the name of Christ and unless you are willing to act in love yourself.

CONFIDENCE BY THE SPIRIT - Vs. 24

1 John 3:24 - And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

John gives us a principle here that has to do with obedience.

When we obey the Lord Jesus is in communion with us. 1 John 1:6

When we obey, we are in communion with the Lord Jesus. 1 John 2:6, John 15:4-5

And how do we know that Christ abides in us?

It is through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14-17, John 14:16-18

My friend, God wants us to have confidence.

He will give us this confidence as we do as He says.

CONFIDENCE WITH GOD - Vs. 21

CONFIDENCE IN PRAYER - Vss. 22-23
