SERMON SEEDS FOR APRIL 5, 2004

http://www.sermonseeds.org

My apologies for the lateness of this mailing and for the high percentage of “reruns”!

I have had a very busy week dealing with pastoral duties, therefore only one outline is totally new. Another is much more developed, so I’ll count it as “new”.

However, I hope you can glean from some of the other Easter outlines that have been sent before and also appear on the website.

Isaiah 53

BENEATH THE CROSS OF JESUS

(A Complete Message)

V     Due to the movie, The Passion of the Christ, there has been much talk about the sufferings of Christ.

V     What has impressed you most about the sufferings of our Lord?

V     Imagine yourself in the crowd below the cross. What do you see?

Probably the best known prophetic picture of the sufferings of Christ is found in Isaiah 53.  Tonight we venture “Beneath the Cross of Jesus” to see some very sobering and yet beautiful truths about the sufferings of our Lord.

CHRIST, THE SERVANT – Vss. 1-2

V     This chapter is a continuation of Isaiah 52:13-15. God calls Christ “His servant”.

V     What is the job of a servant?  In what ways did Christ prove himself to be a servant?

V     What does Philippians 2:6-8 tells us about Jesus as a servant?

Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

V     What is a tender plant?  How did Jesus show Himself to be that?

V     How was Jesus a root out of a dry ground?

V     What does verse 2 tell us about the humanity of Jesus?

CHRIST, THE SORROWFUL – Vs. 3

V     What made Jesus a man of sorrows?

V     In what ways was Jesus despised and rejected of men?

V     How did Jesus become acquainted with grief?

V     How did Jesus’ enemies hide from Him?

V     How did Jesus’ disciples hide from Him?

CHRIST, THE SUBSTITUTE – Vss. 4-6

V     According to verse 4, how were Jesus’ enemies confused?

V     Was Jesus smitten of God?

V     According to verse 5, why did Jesus suffer?

V     How does His “substitutionary atonement” bring us peace?

V     Are all our physical sicknesses healed at the cross?

V     What does verse 6 tell us about the nature of sin?

V     What does verse 6 tells us about the work of Christ?

CHRIST, THE SUFFERER – Vss. 7-9

V     How did Christ go about suffering according to verse 7?

V     Why was Christ’s suffering so amazing?

V     In what situations might we be called upon to suffer in the same way?

V     What impresses you about verse 8?

V     In what ways was verse 9 fulfilled?

CHRIST, THE SATISFIED – Vss. 10-12

V     Why was God satisfied with His righteous servant according verse 11?

V     Why was God “pleased” to pour out His wrath on the Lord Jesus? According to verse 10.

V     According to verses 10-12, what results of the death of Christ will

Luke 24:41a

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

"And while they yet believed not for joy..."

Sometimes God presents things to us and we think that they are "too good to be true". The disciples thought that Jesus being alive was too good to be true and had trouble believing. There are some things that seem to be too good to be true, but are anyway.

REDEMPTION IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT IT IS TRUE!

1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 5:6-9

Jesus shed His blood on Calvary to redeem us!

REGENERATION IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT IT IS TRUE!

John 3:1-7, John 1:12-13, 1 Peter 1:3, 23

Anyone who truly trusts Christ as Savior is "born again".

RESPONSIBILITY IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT IT IS TRUE!

Matthew 28:19-20, Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Peter 4:11-12

God has chosen to use us in his ministry. Some will be missionaries, evangelists, pastors and teachers. Others will be lay leaders in the church. All of us have a Spiritual gift to use, and all of us can be witnesses for Christ.

REWARDS ARE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT THEY ARE TRUE!

1 Corinthians 4:5, 9:25, 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Thessalonians 2:19, 2 Timothy 4:8, James 1:12, 1 Peter 5:4, Revelation 2:10

Jesus will reward his faithful servants. What will we do with our crowns? We will lay them at the feet of Jesus!

Revelation 4:11-12

RESURRECTION IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT IT IS TRUE!

1 Corinthians 15:20-28, 51-58 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

We will be risen from the dead!

John 21

IT SOUNDS FAMILIAR

A FAMILIAR SCENE - Vss. 1-3

Peter and some of the other disciples decided to return to the familiar haunts of the fishing boat.

And like other times in the past, there were no fish to be caught!

A FAMILIAR SOUND - Vss. 4-6

It was the voice of the Lord Jesus. He was inquiring as to their wellbeing. When they reply that they have no "meat", he tells them to cast the net on the other side of the boat. There is a great catch.

A FAMILIAR STORY - Vss. 7-12

It is Peter, who as usual, reacts spontaneously. He grabs his coat and puts it on. He grabs the net to bring it in. Then he and the other disciples are invited to join Jesus for breakfast!

A FAMILIAR SPOTLIGHT - Vss. 13-18

The spotlight is on Peter!  It needed to be. Peter had publicly denied his Lord. He needed to publicly confess his Lord. He also needed to be publicly restored by Jesus so the other disciples will later follow his leadership.
