Psalm 97

KNOWING GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

Knowing God #2

(Note: This is a series basically on the attributes of God.)

One of the great attributes of God is that He is sovereign.

In our last message we started on a quest.  The quest is to know God better.  Jeremiah 9:23-24

If we are going to know God better we need to know His sovereignty. And by “knowing” I don’t mean to have an intellectual knowledge that God is sovereign, but to have a heart knowledge that God is sovereign so that knowledge of his sovereignty affects the way I live.

For a practical look at the sovereignty of God this morning I want us to look at Psalm 97.  In this Psalm we discover:

THE REALITY OF GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

Psalm 97 begins with a great statement of fact.

Psalm 97:1 - The Lord reigneth;

When someone reigns they are ruling, they are in control, they are kings.

When we say, “God is sovereign”, we are saying, “God is ruler, God is King.”

God’s sovereignty is attested to in the Scriptures. Psalms 93:1, 96:10, 99:1, 95:3, Revelation 1:8, 11:15

When I think of the Lord’s reign, I think of God the Son, the Lord Jesus.

·        Jesus reigns as creator. Colossians 1:16

·        Jesus reigns as the one who holds all things together. Colossians 1:17

·        Jesus reigns as victor over sin.

God in His reign over earth gave man freedom.

Man chose to rebel against God.

God in his love sent the sinless son of God to pay for our sins. Romans 5:6

·        Jesus reigns as victor over death. – Revelation 1:18

As victor over death, Jesus wants to give you victory over death. John 3:16-18

As victor over death, Jesus wants to give you victory in life right now. Romans 5:17

·        Jesus reigns as heir of all things. Psalm 110:1

Our God reigns! He is sovereign! He is King!

This is reality!

This should effect how you, if you are a Christian think about things.

It should effect how you, if you are a non-Christian, think about things.

THE RUDIMENTS OF GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

What are some of the fundamental principles or rudiments of God’s sovereignty?

Vss. 2-6 – First of all, see here that God is awe-inspiring.

Clouds, darkness, lightnings, fire, melting hills, show Him to be awesome.  God has shown himself to be awe-inspiring on many an occasion.  Here are three more.

God showed himself awe-inspiring to the children of Israel at Sinai. Exodus 19:16-19

Isaiah saw God as awe-inspiring in Isaiah 6:1-4.

At the Transfiguration Jesus showed Himself to be awe-inspiring. Matthew 17:1-2

Not only is God’s Sovereignty awe-inspiring, it righteous and just. Psalm 97:2

Get this in your mind: whatever God does is right and just.

You are not always right.

You are not always just.

But God is.

It is easy for us to wonder if what God is doing is right or just.  But in God’s great scheme of things as the all-knowing, all-powerful God, what He does is always right and just! Isaiah 55:8-9

Not only is God’s sovereignty awe-inspiring, righteous, and just, but God’s sovereignty is above all Gods. Psalm 97:7, 9

As God, He tolerates no substitutes!

No other God is to be worshipped! Isaiah 42:8

You may be thinking, “We’ll I’m safe, I don’t worship any idols.”

I remind you that an idol or a God is not always made with hands, but it is always made in the heart.

Exodus 34:14 - For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

The rudiments of God’s sovereignty - God’s sovereignty is awe-inspiring, righteous, just, and above all Gods.

THE RESPONSES TO GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY

I see three responses to God’s sovereignty in this Psalm.

·        RESPOND IN LOVE

Vs. 10 – Ye that love the Lord

Have ever considered loving the Lord because He is sovereign?

Have you considered loving the Lord because He is awe-inspiring, because He is righteous, because He is just, because He is above all Gods?

Yes, we should love Him if He has saved us and we have everlasting life!

But we would not have everlasting life, if God in His sovereignty had not provided a way of forgiveness for our sins.

God in his sovereignty declared us Christians as righteous and just in His eyes through the death of His Son.

There has been many a good king or queen who has been loved for their rule over a nation.

We serve the King of the universe. Should we not love Him?

·        RESPOND WITH HATRED

Psalm 97:10 - Ye that love the Lord, hate evil:

It makes sense, doesn’t it?  If I love the Lord, I will hate what He hates.  He hates evil.

Now, I have a word of warning for you.  It is very easy for us to hate the evils of drugs, homo-sexuality, murder, and injustice in the world.  But I feel that the evil we should hate is the evil that we allow in our own lives.

Do you a habit that displeases the Lord? Hate it and forsake it!

Do you have an attitude that displeases the Lord? Hate it and forsake it.

As a child of God who loves the Lord, I should hate evil in myself more than any other evil there is!

·        RESPOND IN LOVE

·        RESPOND WITH HATRED

·        RESPOND WITH JOY AND THANKSGIVING

Psalm 97:1 - The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.

Psalm 97:12 - Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

If we know in our hearts that God is sovereign.

If we have accepted God’s sovereignty as meaning that God is not only king of the universe, but King in my life.

If we know that nothing can happen today unless God knows about it in advance and that it is permitted by Him.

Then we should be joyful and thankful to our God who is KING!

LUKE 14:25-35

DISCIPLESHIP

In this passage gives a warning and a challenge to those who would follow Him.  Jesus is talking about discipleship.

A disciple is a follower.  A disciple is a learner.  A disciple spends time with his teacher, either through personal contact or the teacher’s writings, and strives to be like the teacher.

Luke 14:25 - And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

At this point, Jesus was immensely popular and was being followed by multitudes.  Not all of these people were true believers in Jesus and thus they were not true disciples.

Jesus gives a great challenge concerning discipleship that would have certainly thinned out the crowds!  In this teaching of discipleship we want to see:

THERE’S A PRICE TO PAY - Vss. 26-27

THERE’S A PLAN TO CONSIDER - Vss. 28-33

THERE’S A PROBLEM TO AVOID - Vss. 34-35

THERE’S A PRICE TO PAY - Vss. 26-27

Luke 14:26 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Does the Bible tell us to hate our parents? No! Ephesians 6:2

Does the Bible tell us to hate our spouses or children? No! Titus 2:4, Ephesians 5:25, 6:4

And what about hating brothers, sisters, and friends? John 14:34-35

And what about hating ourselves? Matthew 22:39

Jesus is speaking of a comparison here.

Jesus should be loved more than father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, or self.

Everyone and everything should be loved less than I love the Lord Jesus.

Compared to my love for the Lord Jesus, my love for others is, by comparison, hatred.

In order to be a true disciple of Jesus, I must love Jesus first, last, and always.

Discipleship means paying the price to love the Lord Jesus with all our hearts, souls and minds. It is a 24/7 proposition.

It is very easy to look at others and think them not to be very good disciples.  But before we do, let’s consider ourselves, and all the ways we don’t love Him the way we should.

Our love for the Lord Jesus should be a growing, progressive thing.  We’ll show our love for Him in one area, making costly decisions in favor of Jesus, and then Jesus will show you another sacrificial way that we need to express our love.

Luke 14:27 - And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

When Jesus bore his cross he was headed out to die!

A cross is symbolic with death.

If I love the Lord Jesus, I must die to my own selfish ambitions, my own selfish desires, my own selfish plans and follow Him.

We said that the aim of a disciple is to be like His master. This is what Jesus said. Luke 6:40

If I am going to be like Jesus, I too, must be dead to myself.

If I can up my cross, I must also follow Him.

·        How often in your day to you consult with the Lord about what He wants you to be doing?  I am

THERE’S A PLAN TO CONSIDER - Vss. 28-33

Luke 14:28-30 - For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? [29] Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, [30] Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

No doubt you’ve heard this parable before.

A man decides he’s going to build a watch tower above his land.  But he doesn’t take into consideration what it will cost to finish the project.

The foundation is laid, and that’s it. There’s no more money available, and the man becomes the laughingstock of the whole community!

To the multitude of followers Jesus is saying, “Consider the cost of being my disciple before you commit yourself.”

Don’t lay a foundation and then fall away.

All too many people have done this.

Luke 14:31-32 - Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? [32] Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

I want you to think of God as the invading King.

He certainly has us outnumbered.

When we realize that we can never win against God, that He is our righteous judge, it is time to negotiate peace.  Of course, we come to God on God’s terms, it means that we secure peace by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Surrender to God through Christ is more than just negotiating peace.  It means that we become His subjects.  We become His servants.  Peace has been secured and we are active citizens of His Kingdom.

John 13:13 - Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The dumbest thing a non-Christian can do is to resist God.

The dumbest thing a Christian can do is to resist God.

Luke 14:33 - So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

A true disciple has given in.

A true disciple has laid everything at Jesus’ feet.

His relationships are surrendered to Jesus.

His reputation is surrendered to Jesus.

His job is surrendered to Jesus.

His money is surrendered to Jesus.

His family is surrendered to Jesus.

His marriage is surrendered to Jesus.

THERE’S A PRICE TO PAY - Vss. 26-27

THERE’S A PLAN TO CONSIDER - Vss. 28-33

THERE’S A PROBLEM TO AVOID - Vss. 34-35

Luke 14:34-35 - Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? [35] It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Jesus gives a similar warning in the Sermon on the Mount about salt losing its saltiness.

Salt is good as a preservative against decay.

Salt is good for flavor.

Salt is good for making one thirsty.

·        As Christians we should act as a preservative against evil. We are the ones who are to stand for righteousness.

·        As Christians we should “spice things up” with our Godly, joyful living.

·        As Christians we should make non Christians thirsty for the Gospel.

When we stop being salty, it means that the salt has been diluted with impurities.  Salt that is no longer salty is useless.

If we lose our saltiness as disciples, we too, will be useless.

But if we love Jesus more than anyone else,

And if we take up our crosses and follow him,

And if we count the cost of discipleship and follow through,

We will be “salt” in a dying world.

Let’s count the cost and follow through as disciples.

THERE’S A PRICE TO PAY - Vss. 26-27

THERE’S A PLAN TO CONSIDER - Vss. 28-33

THERE’S A PROBLEM TO AVOID - Vss. 34-35

This is a newly expanded version of a previous outline.

GODLY WOMEN

Luke 18:1-3 etc.

THEY WERE SAVED BY JESUS – Luke 18:1-2

THEY SHARED WITH JESUS – Luke 18:3

THEY STOOD WITH JESUS – Matthew 27:55-56

THEY WERE SURPRISED BY JESUS – Matthew 28:1-10

***************************************************************************

Luke 2:18-19 etc.

NEW TESTAMENT MOMS

THE ATTENTIVE MOM - Luke 2:18-19, 2:51, John 2:1-10

Mary observed her child and knew Him as well as anyone on this earth. She also remembered those things that he said and did.

An attentive Mom will be able to attend to the physical and spiritual needs of her children.

THE AMBITIOUS MOM - Matthew 20:20 -23

The mother of James and John was certainly ambitious for her children.

Many a child has been pushed too far by parents who wanted them to achieve more than the child was capable of or more than he desired to do.

THE ARTICULATE MOM (AND GRANDMOM) - 2 Timothy 1:5, 3:15

His Mother and Grandmother communicated faith and the scriptures to Timothy when Timothy was very young.  We need to articulate the Scriptures to our children as well.

THE ADOPTED MOM - Romans 16:13

The mother of Rufus was not Paul's literal mom.  She had acted towards him in a motherly way.  Praise God for those Godly older women who have "mothered" us when we needed it. Praise God when God allows you to nurture younger Christians as kind of an adopted mother.

Ephesians 5 etc.

T.L.C. FOR MOM

Mother's Day comes once a year. Here are ways husband and children can show Mom Tender Loving Care (T.L.C.) every day of the year.

1. LOVE HER - Ephesians 5:25-27

2. LEAD HER - Ephesians 5:22-24

The husband is not a dictator, but a loving leader, whose leadership will usually be accepted by the wife when she is treated correctly. A wise leader will include those he's leading in the decision making process.

3. LEARN FROM HER (Proverbs 3:11-12, 26)

4. LOOK UP TO HER (1 Peter 3:7, Ephesians 6:1-3)

5. LOOK AFTER HER (1 Timothy 5:8)

1 Peter 3:1-7

A MARRIAGE THAT PLEASES GOD

God established marriage and approves of it. - Genesis 2:22-24, Hebrews 13:4

Christians should only marry Christians - 2 Corinthians 6:14-15

God has plans for your marriage.

Christian men will only be truly happy with Christian women that practice 1 Peter 3:1-6.

Christian women will only be truly happy with Christian men that practice 1 Peter 3:7

THE CHRISTIAN WIFE - Vss. 1-6

·        EXHORTATION - Vss. 1-2

Women are encouraged to live in submission to their husbands.

This does not mean that the man is superior to his wife, but for the sake of God's order, she is to submit to her husband's leadership.

Husbands need to remember, however, that they are to help the wives to be submissive by loving them as Christ loved the church. Ephesians 5:25

Women are also encouraged to win their husbands to a Godly obedience by their quiet, chaste conversation.

·        EXPLANATION - Vss. 3-4

Peter is not saying that is wrong to fix one's hair, or to wear jewelry or nice clothes.  He is saying that true adornment is that of a "meek and quiet spirit".

·        EXAMPLE - Vss. 5-6

Sara, and other Godly women of the Bible (Ruth, Esther, Mary) serve as positive examples for the women of today.

THE CHRISTIAN HUSBAND - Vs. 7

·        REQUIREMENTS

The husband is to understand his wife.

The husband is to honor his wife.

·        REASONS

The wife is considered to be the "weaker vessel".

The wife is a "joint heir" of the "grace of life".

A husband's prayers are hindered when he doesn't treat his wife properly.
