Psalm 93

OUR GOD REIGNS, PM 6/5/05

Digging Deeper in the Psalms #4

(These are the limited notes that I used.)

.

HOW LOVELY ON THE MOUNTAINS

ARE THE FEET OF HIM

WHO BRINGS GOOD NEWS,

GOOD NEWS ANNOUNCING PEACE,

PROCLAIMING NEWS OF HAPPINESS.

OUR GOD REIGNS; OUR GOD REIGNS!

(2) HE HAD NO STATELY FORM;

HE HAD NO MAJESTY,

THAT WE SHOULD BE DRAWN TO HIM.

HE WAS DESPISED AND WE TOOK NO ACCOUNT OF HIM,

YET NOW HE REIGNS WITH THE MOST HIGH.

(3) OUT OF THE TOMB

HE CAME WITH GRACE AND MAJESTY;

HE IS ALIVE, HE IS ALIVE.

GOD LOVES US SO,

SEE HERE HIS HANDS,

HIS FEET, HIS SIDE.

YES, WE KNOW HE IS ALIVE.

CHORUS: OUR GOD REIGNS! (4 TIMES)

Text and Music: Leonard E. Smith, Jr.  Copyright 1974, 1978 by Leonard E. Smith, Jr./New Jerusalem Music

Psalm 93 begins with the saying, ‘THE LORD REIGNS”

What does that mean to you?

How can believing this truth change your life?

How is this truth relevant in the following situations:

When someone is ill?

When someone dies?

When children disappoint you?

When there are financial difficulties?

Tonight’s psalm should be an encouragement, as it reminds of some of the significance of God’s reign.

THE CLOTHING OF GOD’S REIGN – Vs. 1

·        Majesty – Isaiah 6:1-8, Revelation 1:12-17

·        Strength

How strong is God?

Why is His strength important?

Philippians 4:13

Ephesians 3:16-21 - That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; [19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. - [20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Colossians 1:11 - Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

THE CONCRETENESS OF GOD’S REIGN – Vs. 1

Who can move the earth?

Will He ever? When? Revelation 21:1

Until then, no matter what happens nothing is going to happen to the earth.

The only way anything can ever change is when God allows it.

What, besides the world, is unmovable?

His Word

His Promises

His Presence

His Power

His Plans

His permanent reign

THE CONTINUATION OF GOD’S REIGN – Vs. 2

How long has God reigned?  How long will He reign?

What are some of the problems God has reigned through?

THE COMFORT OF GOD’S REIGN – Vss. 3-4

Think of the floods as your troubles.

How do troubles have voices?

What do large waves do to people?  How are our troubles like those waves?

How is the Lord mightier than the noise our troubles make?

How is the Lord mightier than the waves that hit us?

Pastor Temple had a small son who often walked with him out through the fields and neighboring pasture behind the church parsonage. At first the little fellow would hold onto my little finger, but he found that when he stepped into a hoof-print or stumbled over something, his grip would fail and down he'd go in the dust or snow. Not giving it much thought, his mind on other matters, Pastor Temple would stop and the boy would get up, brush himself off, and grab my little finger again, gripping a little harder this time.

"Needless to say, this occurred frequently until one day as he was brushing himself off, he looked at me and said, 'Daddy?' I replied, 'Yes, Son, what is it?' He said, I think if you would hold my hand, I wouldn't fall.'

Pastor Temple said, "You know, he still stumbled many times after that, but he never hit the ground. Now, as you walk with God, don't try to hold on to Him, let Him hold on to you. You may stumble but He'll never let you fall." Fred Musser, The Tabernacle --James S. Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc, 1988) p. 244.

THE CHARACTER OF GOD’S REIGN – Vs. 5

·        He rules by His sure word

Psalm 119:89 - For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven.

Numbers 23:19 - God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Isaiah 46:11 - …yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

Mark 13:13 - And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

·        He rules in holiness

Leviticus 20:26 - And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

Jonah 1

RUNNING FROM GOD

#1 of 4 on the Book of Jonah

There are many people who has been called of God to do something and have obeyed. There are many people who have been called of God to do something, and ran from Him, instead of doing His will.

Jonah was one who ran.

REQUIREMENT OF GOD Vss. 1-2

Jonah the prophet was called by God to go and preach against Ninevah.

REBELLION OF JONAH Vs. 3

He ran instead of obeying.

RESULTS OF DISOBEDIENCE Vss. 4-17

When we run from God, as Jonah did:

1. It affects others. - Vss. 4-5 - The passengers, the cargo, and the ship itself were all affected by God's judgment of Jonah's sin.

2. It affects our testimony. - Vss. 6-10 - Jonah, the prophet of God, had to identify himself, and admit his own sin.

3. It affects ourselves. Vs. 5, 11-16

Spiritually Jonah was out of fellowship with God. He slept when he should have been praying. Psalm 66:18

Physically Jonah experienced God's judgment. That's how he ended up in the belly of the great fish. 1 Corinthians 11:26-32, 1 John 5:16

Mark 1:1-11

POWER-PACKED PREACHER, 5/29/05

Life of Christ #5

As we continue our series in the Life of Christ, after seeing Jesus as a boy in the temple last week, we are brought face to face with one of the most powerful preachers who ever lived.  His name was John the Baptist.

John the Baptist was a miracle baby, son of a woman named Elizabeth who was called “barren”.  He was also son of Zecharias, a Godly priest.  Zechariah was told about the birth of John, whose name means “God is gracious”, by the angel Gabriel, who appeared to him in the temple. Luke 1:15-17

The ministry of this power-packed preacher is seen in Mark 1:2-11.

Vs. 1 – The Gospel of Mark is unique in that it has no introductory material concerning the Lord Jesus.  John tells us about the Jesus being preexistent eternally, and Matthew and Luke each give two chapters concerning his birth and what happened before his birth.

Mark jumps in and says, “This is the good news about Jesus Christ who is the Son of God!” WHAM!  We are hit with the reality that we are entering the story of the Son of God, and Mark hits the deck running with it.

Mark is the Gospel of action and 19 times Mark uses the word “straightway” which means immediately. Mark keeps his story moving.

THE PROMISE OF JOHN’S MINISTRY – Vss. 2-3

After just one verse Mark starts talking about the ministry of John the Baptist, the power-packed preacher who came as a forerunner to Jesus.

Mark tells us that the ministry of John the Baptist had been promised in the Old Testament. He quotes two passages: Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3.

Vss. 2-3 –John the Baptist was sent to get the Jewish people ready for the coming of their Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. Someone had to point attention to Jesus, and get them ready for His arrival.

When an emperor would visit a part of his Kingdom, a messenger was sent ahead.  One of his jobs was to get the roads that the emperor would travel on ready.  He prepared the way and made the paths straight.  Roads were mostly in poor condition and needed attention, especially if someone important had to travel on them.

The road that leads to a person’s heart is in poor shape as the heart is itself. Jeremiah 17:9

There are large boulders in the road – sins of commission, things which we have done wrong.

There are giant potholes in the road – sins of omission, things which we should have done but didn’t.

John was sent to get the people thinking of their need for a Savior.

Vs. 3 – John’s ministry was in the wilderness along the Jordon River.  He was crying from the wilderness and people came to him. Sometimes people have to get away from their normal routine before they will see that they have a need.

And notice that John was getting people ready to receive Jesus.  John was always pointing to Jesus.

THE PARTICULARS OF JOHN’S MINISTRY

Vs. 4 – John had a two-fold ministry.

             First John preached.

He preached the need for repentance, before the arrival of the coming Messiah.

Second, John baptized.

John’s preaching was not pleasant.  He did not tickle ears. Luke 3:7-9

John called the people to repentance.

Repentance is a change of mind about sin that leads to a change in behavior.

Someone who is truly sorry for sin, will confess it, and forsake it.

John was preaching repentance and baptism.

This was a baptism in preparation for the coming Messiah.

The word baptism means to dip or immerse.

The person who was baptized was publicly professing repentance.

A person repented, indicated repentance by baptism, and their sins were remitted. They were dismissed! They were sent away.

How is baptism today different from John’s baptism?

John’s baptism was in view of the coming Messiah.

Our baptism is in view that Messiah has come.

We are baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Our baptism is the ultimate testimony that our faith is in Christ.

We are not to be baptized in order to be saved.

We are to be baptized because we are saved!

Vs. 5 – John’s ministry was a success.

It was Negative in many ways because he rebuked sin.

It was successful because they confessed their sins, or agreed with God about their sins, and were baptized.

And the sheer number of people who responded!

One estimate is about 300,000 people were baptized by John.

Vs. 6 – John’s clothing was rugged, the attire of a wilderness dweller.

It was similar to the clothing worn by Elijah the prophet.

In fact John was the fulfillment of a promise that Elijah would come. Malachi 4:5

John’s diet was very austere. Locusts and wild honey were his fare.  Not exactly what we call great food.

For John it was not a time for fancy clothes.

For John it was not the time for a fancy diet.

John had serious business to carry out!  People needed to ready for the coming Messiah.

Today people need to be ready for the coming Messiah.

Jesus is coming back, and we need to be ready. Luke 12:40

Unsaved people need to become ready for the coming of the Lord Jesus by trusting Him for forgiveness and eternal life. John 3:36

Those of us who know Jesus as Savior need also be ready for his coming. Titus 2:11-13

It is time for Christians to repent.

It is time for Christians to confess sin, forsake sin, and live a Godly life until Jesus comes.

James 4:4, 8-10

Vs. 7 – In effect, John is saying, “You think I’m a mighty

preacher? You haven’t seen anything yet!”

“The one that’s coming after me is so mighty that I am not even worthy enough to unloose his sandals, the most menial job that a servant can do!”

If we compare ourselves to John the Baptist, none of us would compare favorably.  He was far holier, far more committed than we are.

So, if John was not worthy enough to untie the sandals of the Son of God, where does that put us?

Where would we be without the grace of God?

Vs. 8 – John baptized with water.

Jesus baptized with the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the part of God that takes up residence inside of it.  Jesus promised that the Spirit would indwell believers, and He has! John 7:38-29, 1 Corinthians 12:13

As a result of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives we have been blessed.

We have the blessing of the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23

·        We have the blessing of the instruction of the Spirit. John 16:33

·        We have the blessing of the intercession of the Spirit. Romans 8:26-27

We have the blessing of the power of the Spirit   Acts 1:8, Galatians 5:16

THE PINNACLE OF JOHN’S MINISTRY – Vss. 9-11

What was John’s greatest moment of ministry?

Vs. 9 – It was the day, that John the servant, baptized Jesus,

the Son of God. John didn’t want to do it! Matthew 3:14-15

John knew who Jesus was, the Son of God.

I believe John knew that Jesus was sinless.

John knew that Jesus had more right to baptize John, a sinner, than John did Jesus, who was sinless.

Jesus said that it had to be done to fulfill all righteousness!

Jesus was baptized so he could associate with our sins.

Jesus came to take our sins on His sinless shoulders.

Jesus’ baptism was symbolic that He was taking the responsibility for our sins.  He was identifying with us and our sins.

If Jesus confessed sins when he was baptized, He would have confessed the sins of the whole world.

Baptism was a symbol of death, dying to sin, rising to new life.

Jesus’ baptism was a picture that He would die for our sins and rise again. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Vs. 10 – The presence of the Holy Spirit rested upon the Lord Jesus.  He would minister in the power of the Holy Spirit?

How can we do less?

We should be constantly asking for the Holy Spirit’s power to be manifest in our lives.

Vs. 11 – God gave his approval!

This is my Son!  I’m pleased!

God was pleased not only because Jesus was obedient, but because He wanted to please His Heavenly Father.

John 4:34 - Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

May this be our goal too!

Hebrews 13:7, 17

ABOUT YOUR PASTOR

HEBREWS STUDY #30

A Complete Lesson

·        Tell us about a good pastor you knew who is now with the Lord. What made him a good pastor?

·        What are some legitimate expectations that a congregation should have of a pastor?

·        What are some legitimate expectations that a pastor should have of a church?

·        What are some unrealistic expectations that some people have of a pastor?

·        What are some unrealistic expectations that some pastors have of a church?

Hebrews 13:7, 17 talk about the Pastor and give us some good information that helps us understand his duties as a servant of Christ in the local congregation.

YOUR PASTOR IS A RULER

Remember them which have the rule over you.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves:,

·        Those who have the rule over us are leaders.  In this case past leaders are being remembered.

·        Specifically in view here are the “elders” or “bishops”.  The two titles refer to the same person.  It is a man who has distinguished himself in spiritual age and character as an elder. It is a man who looks after the congregation as a bishop or an overseer.

·        Elders are always mentioned in the plural in local church.  There is always more than one.

·        What Biblical qualifications are there for elders?  1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9

·        According to 1 Peter 5:1-4, how should elders lead?

·        In what ways should a pastor rule a congregation?

·        In what ways should a congregation submit themselves to the pastor?

·        In what ways should a pastor submit himself to the congregation?

     Ephesians 5:21

YOUR PASTOR IS A REPRESENTATIVE

…who have spoken unto you the word of God:

V     What is the most important responsibility that an elder can have?

1 Timothy 5:17 - Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:13 - Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

V     Why is preaching and teaching God’s Word so very important?

V     How can a congregation help a pastor fulfil this responsibility?

V     How can a congregation hinder a pastor’s ministry of the Word?

YOUR PASTOR IS A ROLE MODEL

…whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

v    Have you ever followed a pastor’s example?  How?

v    1 Timothy 4:12 shows us what a pastor or elder should be modeling.

Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in

word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

v    How does one model faith?

v    What should be the results or the end of a pastor’s manner of life after he is gone?

YOUR PASTOR IS RESPONSIBLE

for they watch for your souls,

Ø     Why is “watching for souls” such a serious responsibility?

Ø     How should pastors watch for souls?

Ø     How can you help your pastor fulfill this responsibility?

YOUR PASTOR IS A REPORTER

…as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

¯    When will the pastor give account of his ministry? Why will this event be more traumatic for a pastor than for you?

James 3:1 - My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

¯    How can you make your pastor’s ministry a joy?

¯    How can you make your pastor’s ministry a grief?

¯    Why is giving grief to the pastor when it is not deserved “unprofitable” right now?

¯    Why is giving grief to the pastor when it is not deserved “unprofitable” in the future?  1 Corinthians 5:10
