Jonah 4

RUNNING AGAINST GOD

Jonah was the prophet on the run.

In chapter 1 he ran away from God.

In chapter 2 he ran back to God.

In chapter 3 he ran for God.

In chapter 4 he ran against God.

JONAH'S FIGHT

God was not fighting Jonah, but Jonah was fighting God.  God did not destroy Ninevah, and that's what Jonah wanted.  Because Ninevah repented, God did not destroy the city at that time.

1. His Displeasure Vs. 1

2. His Complaint Vs. 2

3. His Request Vs. 3

Jonah makes a rash request to die, because he is not getting his way.

4. His Watch Vs. 5

Jonah is watching to see if God will change his mind and destroy Ninevah.  God had already said that He wouldn't

GOD'S RESPONSE

1. His Question. Vs. 4

God asks Jonah if he is doing the right thing by getting angry.

The right answer, of course, is "no".

2. His Object Lesson Vss. 5-9

God provides Jonah a fast growing gourd that protects him from the heat. God sends a worm to destroy the gourd, and Jonah is angry and ready again to die.

3. His Explanation  Vss. 10-11

God explains that Jonah cared about the gourd that was there for a day and gone for a day. Jonah had done no labor to receive the blessing of the gourd.

God then says "Why shouldn't I have compassion on Ninevah, which has many people and much cattle?"

Matthew 6:10

THY KINGDOM COME

(THE LORD'S PRAYER PART #3 OF 8)

God has given us a great privilege. The privilege is to be a part of His great work here on earth.  God wants to accomplish great things in the lives of believers and unbelievers, and he wants us to be a part of it! God has chosen to get His work accomplished by answering our prayers.  That is why we are to pray, "Thy Kingdom Come". John 14:12-14, 1 Peter 4:7, 1 John 5:14-15

When we elaborate on these words in prayer, we can ask God to establish his kingdom in several ways.

ASK GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS MILLENNIAL KINGDOM ON EARTH

Jesus is coming again! When He comes He will establish His Millennial Kingdom. Acts 1:9-11, Revelation 19:11-21, Isaiah 11:1-9, Revelation 20:1-2

As Christians we should be anxiously looking forward to the coming of the Lord Jesus to establish His Kingdom, and praying for His arrival.

ASK GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM IN YOUR HEART

Right now we should be desirous that God's Kingdom would reign in our hearts.  We should want Jesus to be Lord right now! Ephesians 3:17, Romans 12:1, Galatians 2:20

Our daily prayer should be that Jesus would reign in our hearts by faith!  We should examine our lives for sin, and make sure that we are on good terms with him. Psalm 66:18, Psalm 139:23-24

ASK GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM IN YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS

You know those among your family and friends who need salvation - pray for them.

You know the weaknesses of your friends and family - pray for them.

You know the trials and tribulations of your friends, pray for them.

Ask God to bring His kingdom to their hearts. 1 John 5:14-15

ASK GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM IN YOUR CHURCH

The more we pray for God's Kingdom to reign in the hearts and lives of our fellow believers, the more that will be accomplished.

Paul was always praying for the churches that he knew. 1 Thessalonians 1:2-4, Philippians 1:3-10, Romans 1:8-9

ASK GOD TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM IN THE UNSAVED

I don't really understand how God balances free will, His election and prayer.  I do know this however that God's will is that people get saved. 1 Timothy 2:1-4, 2 Peter 3:9

It is God's will that nobody perish.

It is God's plan to answer prayer.

When we pray according to God's will he hears.

Pray for the unsaved to get saved.

Luke 18:1-8

LEARNING FROM A STUBBORN WIDOW

I once knew a stubborn widow.  Her name was Margaret Hunt.

·        She was stubborn enough to hit a would-be kidnapper over the head with a nightstick, thus saving her little girl.

·        She was stubborn enough to raise her youngest daughter herself when her husband died at age 46.

·        She was stubborn enough to walk again (in her 70’s) when the doctor said she’d never walk again after a broken ankle.

·        She was stubborn enough to keep house and cook for her son well into her 80’s.

I knew Margaret Hunt well.  The baby that was almost kidnapped was my mother.  I called Margaret Hunt “Grandma”. We can learn a good kind of being stubborn from Margaret Hunt.

Jesus told a parable about another stubborn widow from whom we can learn in Luke 18:1-8.

A PERVERTED JUDGE – Vs. 2

A PERSISTENT WIDOW – Vs. 3

A POSITIVE RESULT – Vss. 4-5

A PERSONAL APPLICATION – Vss. 6-7

A PERPLEXING QUESTION – Vs. 8

John 1:19-34

HAVE WE MISSED THE POINT? 6/26/05

Life of Christ #7

When was the last time you went next door to tell someone about Jesus?

When the last time you risked rejection or shame to tell someone about Jesus?

When was the last time you made a sacrifice to share your faith in Christ?

Have we missed the point that faith in Christ is the only way to true joy and fulfillment in this life?

Have we missed the point that nobody goes to Heaven without believing on the Lord Jesus Christ?

Have we missed the point that is our responsibility to tell others about the Lord Jesus Christ?

John 10:10, John 14:6, Mark 16:15

John the Baptist did not miss the point.

John the Baptist knew what it was to direct people to the Lord Jesus.

In John 1:19-34 John teaches us the point that evangelism, or directing people to Jesus, should be at the top of our priority list.  In fact John shows us how not to miss the point!  We will not miss the point if we understand 3 things that John understood.

UNDERSTAND WHO YOU ARE

I think a lot of times we do not do what we should do as Christians because we do not understand who we are as Christians.

Vs. 19 – As we mentioned previously, John the Baptist had a tremendous impact on Israel, Perhaps baptizing as many as 300,000 people.  If anybody could have had an ego, it was John.

There are places in the Gospel of John that the word, “Jews” is used to refer to the religious leadership in Jerusalem.  Because of the impact of John the Baptist’s ministry as a fact-finding group was sent out to John.

John’s ministry was not officially sanctioned by the religious leaders, so they wanted to know who he was.

Vs. 20 – It is important to note that John the Baptist knew who he was.  It is also important that we know who we are if we are going to be effective witnesses for the Lord Jesus.

John, in knowing who he was, knew who he wasn’t!

First of all, he knew that he wasn’t the Christ, or Israel’s Messiah.  He made it very clear that he was the long awaited savior that was promised to Israel.

Vs. 21 – If John wasn’t the Christ, they wanted to know, then was he Elias or Elijah? The return of Elijah was promised in Malachi 4:5-6.

But John the Baptist denied that He was Elijah.

John was also asked about being “that prophet” that was promised by Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15.

Again John denied being that prophet.

John knew who he wasn’t.

He knew that relatively speaking, he was nothing compared to the one he was preceding.  The world did not revolve around John the Baptist.  The world revolved around the coming Messiah.

John spoke of the coming Messiah and not himself, because John was dead to himself.  To John the Baptist, John the Baptist was not important!

One of the reasons why we miss the point of the importance of Evangelism is because we think of ourselves and not of our Savior.

We think of ourselves and not the need of others to know the Lord Jesus.

We have so much going on in our lives and the lives of our children, that we fail to think of telling others about Christ.

We need to be able to say with the Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:14, But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Listen to your own conversation and how much you talk about yourself.  The more you talk about yourself, the less you will talk about the Lord Jesus.  The less you talk about yourself, the less you will talk about Jesus.

John 7:18 - He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

John knew who he wasn’t.  Do you understand that the world does not revolve around you and your interests?

John understood this. That’s why he knew who he was.

John 1:23 - He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

John wasn’t the Messiah.

John wasn’t Elijah.

John wasn’t that prophet.

John was the voice.  In the wilderness of Israel’s rebellion and sin, he was calling for people to make straight paths in to their hearts for Jesus to come.

John knew who he was. John knew he was the voice.

You need to know who you are.  You need to know that you are the voice crying out in today’s post modern culture to a people who need to make straight paths in their hearts and receive Jesus as their Savior.

Jesus has recruited you to be a voice. Acts 1:8, 2Corinthians 5:18, 1 Peter 3:15

John knew who he wasn’t, thus knowing who he was.

John knew he was the voice.

Don’t miss the point. You too are a voice for the Lord Jesus Christ.

UNDERSTAND WHO YOU SERVE

John understood 3 things about the Lord Jesus that you need to understand so you don’t miss the point.

·        YOU SERVE JESUS WHO IS SUPERIOR

Vs. 27 – In the culture of the day, a disciple would do all the things that a servant would do except unloose the sandals of his master’s feet. This was the lowest task that a servant did.

John understood that Jesus was preferred before Him.

John understood that Jesus must always come first.

John understood how unworthy he was even to serve the Lord Jesus in the humblest way.

Do you understand that Jesus was preferred before you?

Do you understand that Jesus always comes first?

Do you understand that you are not worthy to do anything for the Lord Jesus because you are a sinner and he is not?

·        YOU SERVE JESUS WHO IS SAVIOR

Vs. 29 – John is saying, “Here He is the solution to the world’s sin problem!”

John calls Jesus, “the lamb of God”.

The Jewish people were familiar with lambs and other animals being sacrificed for sin.

These sacrifices were like “promissory notes”.

They covered sin until God’s true sacrifice for sin showed up.

Jesus is and was the only true sacrifice for sin.

He only, as the sinless Son of God, could pay for our sins.

There is no other solution to the sin problem. There doesn’t need to be! Hebrews 9:12, Hebrews 9:28

There is only one way to Heaven.

Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose again.

The one that trusts in Jesus Christ as Savior is the one who is going to Heaven. John 3:36

·        YOU SERVE JESUS WHO IS THE SON OF GOD

Vss. 30 – In identifying Jesus, John says that this is the one preferred before him because he was before Him.  John is referring to the preexistence and eternality of the Lord Jesus as God the Son.

Jesus said of Himself in John 8:58: …Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Vss. 31-33 – At the Baptism of Jesus, John saw the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus like a dove and abiding on Him.  This is the one who God had promised would baptize people with God’s Holy Spirit. Only God can baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Today, every person who truly believes in Christ is baptized with the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13

Vs. 34 – John concludes, “THIS IS THE SON OF GOD!”

If you are going to get the point that speaking for the Lord Jesus Christ is important, you need to understand who you serve.

UNDERSTAND WHAT TO SAY

John knew what to say to direct people to Jesus.

And besides being afraid to speak about the Lord Jesus in the first place, I think the second biggest problem is our not knowing what to say.

John knew what to say.

1.     He told them what happened to Himself. He told of his own experiences concerning the Lord Jesus.

2.     He told people to get ready because Jesus is coming.

3.     He told them to look to the Lamb of God that takes away their sin.

So lets follow John’s example.

1.     Tell people what happened to you.

Tell them of your own conviction of sin and need of a Savior.

Tell them how Jesus has changed your life.

Tell them of the assurance you have for Heaven, always directing them to the Lord Jesus.

2.     Tell them to get ready.

They do not know when they will die.

They do not know when Jesus may return.

3.     Tell them to look to the Lamb of God who died for their sins.

Tell them to believe on the Lord Jesus and be forgiven or saved!

Have you missed the point?

Are you so caught up in everything else that you have neglected sharing your Savior with others?

To get the point:

UNDERSTAND WHO YOU ARE

UNDERSTAND WHO YOU SERVE

UNDERSTAND WHAT TO SAY

Philippians 1:3-11

A GOOD MENTOR

A good mentor will guide people in their walk with God in their Christian lives.  Paul, in dealing with the church at Philippi, showed himself to be a good mentor, and worthy of imitating.

A GOOD MENTOR IS THANKFUL – Vss. 3-5

A GOOD MENTOR IS TRUSTING – Vs. 6

A GOOD MENTOR IS TENDER – Vss. 7-8

A GOOD MENTOR IS TALKING (PRAYING) – Vss. 9-11

Hebrews 13:8-16

THE ONE WE WORSHIP

HEBREWS STUDY #31

·        Name some things that people worship which they should not worship.

·        Why do people worship other gods besides the Trinity?

·        Why do we worship the Lord Jesus Christ?

In Hebrews 13:8-13 we see the one we worship, the Lord Jesus Christ. We learn why and how we worship Him.

THE STABILITY OF CHRIST – Vs. 8

Ø     In what ways has Christ not changed?

Ø     How does the stability of Christ encourage you?

Ø     Why is the unchangeable Christ worthy of our worship?

THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST – Vss. 9-10

V     Vs. 9 – What are some “strange doctrines” that people follow today?

V     Are there any “strange doctrines” that Christians are particularly susceptible to?

V     How may a Christian’s heart be “established with grace”?  Why is this a good thing?

V     Why is a diet for religious reasons not profitable?

V     Vs. 10 – Where is the altar at which Christians eat?

John 6:53-58 - Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. [54] Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. [55] For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. [56] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. [57] As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. [58] This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

V     What does it mean to feed on Christ?  How do we do it?

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

V     Why do those that serve the Tabernacle have no right to eat at the altar were we eat?

THE SANCTIFICATION BY CHRIST – Vss. 11-12

v    Vs. 11 – On the Day of Atonement the sacrifices for sin were not eaten by the priests. Other sacrifices on other days were.  The bodies were burned outside the “camp” or city.

v    Vs. 12 - Jesus suffered outside of the camp.  Where was he crucified?

v    How did Jesus sanctify us?

THE SACRIFICES FOR CHRIST – Vss. 13-16

P  Vs. 13 – In what sense were Jewish Christians “outside the camp”?

P  In what sense are we as Christians “outside the camp”?

P  What does going to him “outside the camp” have to do with personal sanctification?

P  How do we bear his reproach?

2 Timothy 3:12 - Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

P  Vs. 14 – How does this verse help us to cope with life?

P  What city are we looking for?

Revelation 21:1-3 - And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. [2] And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. [3] And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

P  Vs. 15 – Why is praise an adequate sacrifice for the Christian to offer?

P  Why do we fail to offer this sacrifice as much as we should?

P  What can we do to make this sacrifice a greater reality in our lives?

P  Vs. 16 – What have you seen Christians do in the name of Jesus that was a good work?

P  To communicate is to share.  Who are some of the people that we as Christians should be sharing with?

P  Why should we want to offer these spiritual sacrifices to God?
