1 Kings 13

INCONSISTENT!

Those of us who serve the Lord need to be consistent in our ministry for him.

It is possible to serve the Lord well, and then do things that make us lose reward.

Paul was concerned about this in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

The prophet in our story started well, but became inconsistent when he started listening to man instead of listening to God.

A MINISTRY DESCRIBED Vss. 1-10

This prophet, whose name we do not know, was sent by God to preach against King Jeroboam.

Please note:

Message Delivered - Vss. 1-3

Miracles Performed - Vss. 4-6

Mandate Stated - Vss. 7-10

The prophet was told by God not to stop to eat and not to go home the same way that he came.

A MINISTER DECEIVED Vss. 11-20

Another prophet told him a lie and the man believed it.

He should have followed what God had told him to do.

It is very easy for us to be deceived when we do not read and heed the Word of God.

A MINISTRY DESTROYED Vss. 21-32

The prophet's ministry ended because of God's discipline.

We do not know what great things he could have accomplished for the Lord, if he had only been obedient.

Psalm 13

LIKE DAVID

Bible characters were real people, therefore we can relate to them.

In this Psalm it is easy for us to see how we can be like David.

LIKE DAVID I MAY FEEL FORGOTTEN - Vs. 1

LIKE DAVID I MAY FEEL FRUSTRATED - Vs. 2

LIKE DAVID I MAY FEEL LIKE A FAILURE - Vss. 3-4

LIKE DAVID, I MUST LIVE BY FAITH - Vss. 5-6

Faith in God's Mercy

Faith in God's Salvation

Faith in God's Bounty

Isaiah 53:3-12, 1 Corinthians 11:26

PROCLAIMING HIS DEATH

(A COMMUNION MEDITATION)

This morning I will preach the greatest message of my career and will never preach a greater one.  I will join other preachers around the world who will preach the greatest message of their careers, and they will never preach a greater.  This morning I will be joined by most of you in this room who will preach the greatest message of your careers, and you will never preach a greater one! And the amazing thing about the message we will preach is that we will do it without saying a word!

Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. In verse 26 the word "shew" means to proclaim or to preach. Therefore, every time you or I, or anyone else receives the bread and cup at the Lord's table,  we are preaching the death of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 53 gives us some insights into exactly what we are preaching when we preach the death of Christ. TO PREACH THE DEATH OF CHRIST IS TO:

PREACH HIS REJECTION Vs.3

PREACH THE BEARING OF MY SIN Vs. 4

PEACH HIS SUBSTITUTION FOR ME Vs. 5-8

PREACH HIS BURIAL Vs. 9

PREACH HIS RESURRECTION Vss. 10-12

Matthew 6:13

LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION

Part #7 of 8 on The Lord's Prayer

A minister was reviewing the family bills. He found a bill from the local dress store for $250 for a new dress.  He confronted his wife yelling that she knew they couldn't afford such expense. The wife replied, "I know honey, but I tried the dress on and Satan tempted me. He said, 'My dear, you look lovely in that dress.' So I bought it."

The husband asked, "Why didn't you say, 'Get thee behind me Satan?'"

"I did," she replied, "But he said, 'My dear it looks lovely in the back too!'" (Source Unknown)

We all face temptations. James 1:13-15

We will all be tempted to do what is wrong.  We can not avoid temptation.  However, I believe that God has designed a way for the amount of temptation that we face to be drastically reduced.

As we ask Him, He will give us victory over temptation.

We come to the next portion of our model prayer, The Lord's Prayer. Matthew 6:13 - "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:" If I sincerely make this my prayer request before God, I am saying,

THERE IS A DESIRE ON MY PART

Do you know why some Christians have a real problem with temptation? THEY WANT TO!

There are areas of their lives that they love so much that they can't let go. Their desire for the sin is so great, that it does not take much to tempt them.

Some love pornography so much that it doesn't take much to get them to be looking at pornographic magazines or websites.

Some love sex so much that it doesn't take much to make them immoral.

Some love gossip so much that it doesn't take much to make them gossip.

Some love hunting, fishing, or sports so much that it doesn't take much to make these things their Gods.

Some love alcohol so much that it doesn't take much for them to make them drink.

Some love themselves so much that it doesn't take much for them to lie to save their skins.

Some love themselves so much that it doesn't take much to get them to worry. And the great majority of worry is self-centered.

What am I saying? We are tempted to sin because we have the wrong kinds of desires.

When we pray in sincerity, And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: we are expressing the desire to have victory over the wrong kinds of desires.

Please turn to 1 John 2:15-17.

According to this passage, we are tempted in three areas. All the temptations I mentioned a moment ago fall into one of three categories: LUST OF THE FLESH - LUST OF THE EYES - PRIDE OF LIFE

They are the same three areas in which Eve was tempted in the Garden of Eden. God said not to eat a certain fruit. Satan tempted Eve. The end result was that Eve succumbed to temptation. Genesis 3:6

Notice what 1 John 2:15-17 is saying. If we love the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, we do not love God the Father! We are easily tempted because we love the world and don't really love the Father!  We have a greater desire to sin than we do to please God!

We must remember how much God loves us. Psalms 145:8-9, 1 John 4:10

We must remember that we are to love Him!

1 John 4:19 - We love him, because he first loved us."

John 14:15 - "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Christian, do you love God?

Christian, do you love the Lord Jesus?

If you do, you should have a desire not to sin, because you want to please Him.

If the desire of your heart is not to sin, then your prayer needs to be in all sincerity, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:"

When you love God and truly desire to please Him, it will be easier to say "no" to those temptations, and to be asking God to deliver you from them.

THERE IS A DECISION ON MY PART

What is the decision that I make as I pray this prayer?

My decision is that, with God's help, I am not going to give in to temptation.

Notice that I said, "with God's help."

You can't do it yourself.

Romans 6:1-4

When Jesus died on the cross, you died with Him.

When Jesus was buried, you were buried with Him.

When Jesus rose to newness of life, you rose to a new life.

Romans 6:10-14

God says you must make a decision. You must decide or "reckon" that you are dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God" through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Such a decision brings another decision. To yield yourself to God and the parts of your body as instruments of righteousness unto God.  You will either yield to sin or yield to God. With God's help you decide to yield to God!

And notice the promise in verse 14, "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."

If your desire is to please God because you love God, your decision must be to yield to God. If you yield to God, your prayer again must be "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:"

THERE IS A DEPENDENCE ON MY PART

As I said a moment ago, you can not do this yourself. You need God's help. And this request is actually an admission on our parts that we can't do it ourselves, and that we need God's help.

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:"

And the neat thing is that God will answer our request!

Turn please to 1 Corinthians 10:12-14.

Vs. 12 - "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

We are warned here that we must be careful to not get too smug.

There are times when we think that we are doing just fine Spiritually, and that we have everything under control. That's when we need to look out!

1 Corinthians 10:13 - "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

Any temptation that you receive is a temptation common to the human race. You won't find that you have a new temptation. In fact the Lord Jesus was already tempted with that same temptation and victorious over it!

Hebrews 4:15 - "...but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."

Now look what else it says in this passage - but God is faithful!

God is faithful - He loves you!

God is faithful - He wants you have victory over sin!

God is faithful - He will help you!

You are not being tempted above that you are able.  Your temptation to sin, no matter how great it is, can be defeated, not in your own strength, but with God's help.

With each temptation God says, "There is a way to escape so that you can bear it."

So when God provides a way to escape, what is our responsibility?

Take it!

1 Corinthians 10:14 - Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

So when temptation comes, we must run from it!

It is as if you are in a burning building and someone yells, "You can escape through the back door." Whether you escape or whether you burn is your decision.

God says, are you being tempted? Run! I will help you escape.

You've heard the Bible story about Joseph. He was being tempted to sleep with his master's wife. He literally ran, leaving his coat behind. He was later falsely accused, yet he was innocent. But he had to take God's way of escape.

Ephesians 4:1-6

THE WORTHY WALK

In the Bible, there is another word used to describe conduct.

The word used is "walk".  A person's "walk" is a way of describing their behavior.

In the Book of Ephesians the word "walk" is used six times. Ephesians 2:10, 4:17, 5:2, 5:8, 5:15

The sixth time the word "walk" is found in Ephesians is found in our text.

Ephesians 4:1 - I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Our conduct or our walk is to be a walk worthy of the vocation, or the calling to which we have been called.  Basically, Paul is telling us that we are Christians, and we should act like it!

Let's look at the worthy walk which we should walk this morning.

THE REQUEST FOR A WORTHY WALK Vs. 1

The first word in this verse is the word "Therefore."

Generally speaking, when we see a "therefore" or a "wherefore" in the Scriptures, we look to see "What it's there for!"

It is very possible that this "therefore" could refer back to the first 3 chapters, which are basically doctrinal in nature. Now Paul is moving from the doctrinal to the practical.

He's going to address some issues in practical Christian living in the last three chapters of Ephesians.  But all Biblical practical Christian living is based on sound doctrine. Paul is basing his practical teaching on his doctrinal teaching.

Another possibility is that Paul says "therefore" based on the what he said in Ephesians 2:21-22 - In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: [22] In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

According to these verses, you and I are the habitation of God!

The Holy Spirit indwells us, and we are part of his holy temple, along with all other believers.

No wonder, Paul is going to encourage us to walk a life worthy of the calling to which we have been called!

Notice the title that Paul gives himself here in Vs. 1, "the prisoner of the Lord."

Paul was a prisoner in Rome at the time he wrote this epistle. The title would challenge the Ephesians to remember that Paul was already setting the example of walking worthy because he was a prisoner for the sake of Christ.

"BESEECH" - This, is not a command, but such a strong request, that if it wasn't for the grace and love of God, it would be a command.

Paul urges us in this verse to walk worthy of the vocation to which you are called.

We are asked to walk worthy of a vocation.

Here, a vocation means a calling. So, really we are being asked to walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called.

What is our calling like?

We were invited before salvation to trust Christ as our Savior.

When we believed upon Him for salvation by faith we became the children of God! John 1:12

You and I are called as the children of God!

And a calling to be a child of God is a high calling.

We didn't earn it. We are sinners.

Jesus died for our sins, securing forgiveness.

All we did was say "yes" to Jesus' invitation to salvation.

Paul is beseeching us, begging us to walk worthy of that high calling as a child of God.

The word "worthy" has to do with weight.

The idea in this verse is that my "walk", my conduct should weigh as much as my calling.  My conduct should reflect the fact that I am a child of God.

My position, my standing in Christ is CHILD OF GOD.

My practice, my conduct in life is to be as CHILD OF GOD.

My walk should match my talk.

No one should be able to look at the way you act as a Christian and be able to honestly say, "IF THAT'S A CHRISTIAN, I WANT NO PART OF IT!"

In all we think, say, and do, we should "weigh in" as the children of God. We should walk worthy of the vocation, the calling to which we have been called.

THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WORTHY WALK Vss. 2-3

Read Vss. 2-3 - Paul tells us that we should behave in a certain way in our worthy walk. Here are the requirements of this walk.

1. LOWLINESS

Another word for lowliness is humility.

What is humility?

Humility is realizing that others are more important than you.

Humility is realizing that the world does not revolve around you.

Humility is being willing to let others receive more attention than you do.

Humility is letting others have their way, even if you think your way is better.

The greatest example of humility is our Savior. Philippians 2:5-8

We think that we are so important.

We think that what we have to say is so important.

But remember, Jesus Christ truly was important, and humbled himself to the cross.

2. MEEKNESS, OR GENTLENESS

I consider gentleness, the equivalent of "speaking the truth in love." It's not so much what we say, as how we say it. Proverbs 15:1

"Meekness is not weakness!"

Moses was called the meekest man in all the earth, but he was a forceful, powerful, dynamic leader.

Our Lord Jesus was "meek and lowly in heart", but he certainly had righteous anger the day he kicked the money changers out of the temple.

Perhaps we should think of meekness as "power under control".

3. LONGSUFFERING

To be LONGSUFFERING is "endure with unruffled temper."

Another word we could use for longsuffering is "patience".

Are you able to go through a trial without blowing your cool?

Can you take it on the chin and not hit the ceiling? James 1:2-4

4. FORBEARANCE

While patience deals with all situations, I feel that forbearance deals with people. the word means to hold up, bear with, endure.

Say, have you ever noticed that we want everyone to be perfect?

Every Sunday School teacher should be perfect.

Every deacon should be perfect.

Every trustee should be perfect.

Every pastor should be perfect.

Every person sitting next to you this evening should be perfect.

We want everyone to be perfect, that is, everyone but ourselves! When it comes to ourselves, we want people to accept the fact that we aren't perfect!

How do we forbear each other? By accepting and forgiving the faults and short coming of our friends and family.

The forbearance that the Lord wants us to practice is to be done in the love of Christ.

5. UNITY

Vs. 3 - As I strive to walk worthy of the Lord, what should my goal be?

My goal, my plan, my object should be to endeavor to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.

Now, by unity, I do not mean uniformity.

Not everyone will act the way you do.

Nor will they always think the way you do.

Nor will they have the same plans as you do.

But unity is agreeableness.

Amos 3:3 - Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

3 ways to have unity:

1. You both naturally agree on a matter.

2. You don't agree, but after talking it out, you come to agreement.

3. You don't agree, but in love, and because it is a matter in which opinions are allowed, you agree to disagree and it does not affect your fellowship. You disagree agreeably.

How can we endeavor to maintain unity?

Be willing to talk.

Be willing to listen

Be willing to go to a brother or sister when you've offended him or her and to apologize.

Be willing to go to a brother when you've been offended and try to make it right.

THE REASON FOR A WORTHY WALK Vss. 4-6

Everything else in the faith is one!

We in our behavior should be one as well!

ONE BODY - The body being the body of Christ.

When one part of your body fights the rest of your body, that is sickness. When there is fighting in the body of Christ, the church, there is sickness!

ONE SPIRIT - The Holy Spirit is working in the life of each one of us, not just inside of you.

ONE HOPE OF YOUR CALLING - The Return Of Christ for the believer.

ONE LORD - Jesus is Lord to every believer.

ONE FAITH - One body of truth.

ONE BAPTISM - The Holy Spirit was already mentioned. I believe this refers to believers baptism.

ONE GOD AND FATHER OF US ALL.

We have all these things in common, therefore there should a unified walk worthy of the calling to which we have been called!
