THE WATCHMAN

Ezekiel 33:1-12

EXAMPLE OF A WATCHMAN – Vss. 1-6

God used the example of a watchman assigned to watch for the enemy and give warning.

If he sounds the trumpet in warning when the enemy comes, he is not responsible.

If he fails to sound the warning, the watchman is responsible.

EXPLANATION TO A WATCHMAN – Vss. 6-9

Ezekiel was called as a watchman to Israel.

He was to listen to God and warn the people.

If Ezekiel failed to warn the wicked he was responsible.

If Ezekiel did warn the wicked, he was not responsible.

EXHORTATION FOR A WATCHMAN – Vss. 10-11

Ezekiel was to speak to the house of Israel.

Israel was to be told that God took pleasure in the death of the wicked.

God’s desire is that men turn from wickedness and live.

Matthew 6:13

THINE IS THE KINGDOM

Part #8 of 8 on The Lord's Prayer

(If you have missed any of the parts of this series, or would just like the series on one email, contact me at jpeters@alltel.net.)

I personally wonder how long God needs to bombard us with His loving-kindness, mercy, grace, and yes discipline, before we surrender to Him. In preparing for this message I was struck in a new way by the fact that the Lord's Prayer concludes in absolute submission to God.  That makes me think that one of the reasons that we do not see more prayers answered is because we are not submissive to God. We are holding out for our will, our own plans and our own satisfaction.

The Lord's Prayer in Matthew concludes with the words, "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."

Do you see surrender there?

Do you see submission there?

"Thine is the Kingdom" - ALL AUTHORITY BELONGS TO HIM!

These words come off our lips very easily, "Thine is the Kingdom."

But I fear that our hearts do not always match our lips.

Matthew 15:8 - "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."

I fear that in our hearts in various ways we say, "MY kingdom come!"

We want our time to be used the way we want to use it.

We want our money to be used the way we want to use it.

We want our children to succeed in the way we want them to succeed.

We want our plans to be approved by God so we will have what we want.

We want our church to be comfortable, and not necessarily as aggressive as Jesus would have us to be.

What is authority? To me it is right to tell someone what to do. You can certainly see how God has that authority.

* He has authority because he is creator. Genesis 1:1

* He has authority because he is omnipotent. Jeremiah 32:17

* He has authority because He is our Father. John 1:12

And what about the Lord Jesus, does He have authority? Matthew 28:18, Colossians 1:17-19, Philippians 2:10-11, 1 Corinthians 15:25

And we must also remember that there is judgment coming.

The unsaved will face Jesus at the "Great White Throne". Revelation 20:11-12

The saved will meet "Him at the Judgment Seat of Christ." 2 Corinthians 5:10, Romans 14:12

God the Father has authority.

God the Son has authority.

Does God the Holy Spirit have authority?

Although He works in cooperation with the Father and the Son, He still has authority. He's the Spirit of God. He's the Spirit of Christ. His directions and leadership is to be followed!

We should not quench the Spirit through unbelief or grieve the Spirit through disobedience. 1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30

So what are we saying when we say "thine is the kingdom"?

We are saying that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have every right to rule right now.

We are recognizing God's right to rule.

We are recognizing God's rule in our lives.

We are submitting to God's Will, in every part of the prayer which we have just prayed.

If it's God's Kingdom, He is King!

We are saying that He is king over our bodies.

We are saying that He is king over our behavior.

We are saying that He is king over our plans.

We are saying that He is king in this church.

We are saying that He is king in our families.

"Thine is the Power" - ALL ABILITY BELONGS TO HIM!

We try too hard.

We face a problem and try to solve it ourselves.

We face a challenge and try to solve it ourselves.

We try to serve Christ in our own strength.

We try to build this church in own strength.

We try to witness in our own strength.

We try to live the right way in our own strength.

When in reality, as we pray, "thine is the power", we are realizing that we can't do it in our own strength. Genesis 18:14, Jeremiah 32:27, Luke 18:27

How has God planned for His work to get done through His children? Through dependence upon Him! John 14:12-14, John 15:4-7

"Thine is the Glory" - ALL ADORATION BELONGS TO HIM!

There is another problem that we have which requires our total surrender.

We want too much of the attention for ourselves.

We want too much of the credit for ourselves.

We want to have glory for what is accomplished. Luke 17:7-10, Matthew 23:11

We need to realize that it is God, the Father, and God the Holy Spirit who are deserving of glory.

Read Revelation 4

"Thine is the Kingdom" - ALL AUTHORITY BELONGS TO HIM!

"Thine is the Power" - ALL ABILITY BELONGS TO HIM!

"Thine is the Glory" - ALL ADORATION BELONGS TO HIM!

So the issue comes back to our submission or surrender.

How long will it take for us to surrender in our hearts to the Lord Jesus?

CLUTTER!

Life of Christ #10

The American Heritage Dictionary defines “clutter” as “A confused or disordered state or collection; a jumble.”  Most of us are familiar with clutter.

Clutter is not a modern phenomenon.  They had clutter in the day of our Lord Jesus.

We want to look at clutter as found in the temple at Jerusalem in Jesus’ Day and often found in the temple of God today.

Vs. 13 – The feast of the Passover commemorated the deliverance which the Lord gave from Egypt under the leadership of Moses. The night which Pharaoh finally let the Jewish people leave was accentuated by the plague of the death of the first born. Every home in Egypt was affected with the death of the first born except the homes of the Jewish people which had applied blood of a spotless lamb to their doorposts.

God had commanded that the Passover become a yearly feast. Our Lord and His disciples went up for this feast to Jerusalem.

Vs. 14 – Our Lord visited the temple. This was to be the place where the presence or glory of God was to be present here upon earth.  It was God’s House.

Our Lord entered the “Court of the Gentiles”.  The Gentiles were not allowed in the inner confines of the Temple, but they were allowed in this outer court where they could pray and seek God.

What did Jesus find when He entered the Court of the Gentiles?  He found clutter!

There were all sorts of animals. These were sold to be used as sacrifices before God.  Also a temple tax was to be paid, and money was converted here from other currencies into temple currencies.

Here was the House of God being used as a market.

Vs. 15 – Jesus was angered by the sin!

He made a whip and drove them all out of the temple.

He did a complete, thorough, housecleaning that removed all the clutter.

Vs. 16 – Jesus told the ones who sold doves to leave. He didn’t want His Father’s house to be a house of business.

In the second cleansing of the temple at the end of Jesus’ life, Jesus made this very bold statement, in Matthew 21:13, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Vs. 17 – The disciples remembered a prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus in Psalm 69:9.  Jesus certainly fulfilled that prophecy with His zeal, His passion that the temple be cleansed.

Vs. 18 – Jesus had touched a nerve.  This was a money making operation.

The Jews wanted to know what authority Jesus had to come in and start cleaning up, removing the clutter.

Vs. 19 – Jesus, of course, was talking of his death, burial, and resurrection. He would be put to death for the sins of the world.  However in three days he would rise again.

Jesus’ resurrection from the dead was the proof that He had the authority to cleanse the temple.

Vss. 20-22 – The Jews did not understand what Jesus was talking about, but later the disciples figured it out.

So Jesus removed the clutter from the temple in His own day.

Jesus is still cleansing temples today.

When you trust Jesus as your Savior you are cleansed from sin. The clutter of sin has been paid for.

A very special thing happens.  Because the Spirit of Christ lives inside of you, because the Lord Jesus lives inside of you, you become the temple of God.  You become God’s home.  You become God’s dwelling.   1 Corinthians 6:19-20, John 14:16-18

Jesus dwells inside of you!  You are God’s temple!

So, because Jesus is in you, let’s talk about His cleansing our temples today. Let’s talk about his cleansing us.

SEE THE ACTIVITY OR CLUTTER

We let things clutter our thoughts when we should be worshipping and serving the Lord. Some of these are very good things, some of them are not.

What are some of the things that clutter our thinking?

·        Some of us allow sports to clutter our thinking. We preoccupied with the world of sports.

·        There are some who preoccupied with hunting.  How many of us have been out in the woods mentally when we should have been paying attention to a sermon, a school lesson, or something else.

·        Some of us are distracted by certain kinds of music whose words are anything but Godly, and do not cause us to think in healthy thought patterns.

     Let me ask you.

·        Of course, there’s the kids and no matter what their age, they can preoccupy our thoughts and our worries.

·        School will tend to get us distracted, whether it’s the desire to study, or to party, or mess around, or do as little as possible, school can consume our thoughts.

·        And then there’s our love for cars.  We can let hot wheels, and just the privilege of driving take our thoughts away from what is really important.  We can also let the distraction of car repairs clutter our thoughts as well.

·        Guys, gals, love, marriage, sexual activity, and for some pornography  can clutter our thinking.

·        And of course with the Satellite Dish the TV can take up more time than ever, if we are not careful.  If you ever stayed home from church, to watch TV, shame on you!

·        Movies are often a distraction.  Some of you know more about the latest movie than you do your Bibles.  And it makes sense. You’ve spent more time with the movies than the Bible.  If we are not careful they can affect our thought lives. Be careful what movies you watch.

·        Guys and girls alike get distracted by taking care of their looks. And let me say this, we should never dress to show off what we’ve got. We should take care of ourselves to look presentable, even attractive, but we should not be obsessed with it and always be modest.  Remember, if you’re saved, you are God’s temple.  The way you dress should indicate that God dwells inside.  This should be true all the time, but especially on Sunday Morning.

·        Some are obsessed with food. That takes up a lot of their thinking and their activity. Remember, it is moderation that glorifies God.

·        Some get distracted by home repairs and dwell on them when they should be dwelling on God!

·        Some are distracted by the love of money (dollar sign). And remember you don’t have to have money in order to love it.  It is the love of money that is the root of all evil.

·        Some are distracted by work and dreaming of climbing the corporate ladder (fellow at computer)

·        And finally many are consumed by their worries, that is they are consumed by themselves. They love themselves. (man worrying)

As you can see there’s lots of potential for clutter in our lives.  It is usually more than one of these that adds to the clutter.

SENSE JESUS’ ANGER – Vs. 17

Jesus was angry because the temple in his day had become a market and a den of thieves!  Who are the thieves on the screen behind me that are cluttering your life?

Jesus was zealous for the temple because it was His Father’s house.  If we are the Temple of God today, you can imagine how incensed Jesus can get when we do not put God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in their proper places.

You can imagine how angry He becomes when we worship other gods.

Matthew 22:37-40 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

James 4:4 - Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

SEE THE ACTIVITY OR CLUTTER

SENSE JESUS’ ANGER

HEAR JESUS’ ACCUSATION – Vs. 16

Listen to these two challenges from our Lord.

John 2:16 - And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

Matthew 21:13 - And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

What is it that Jesus is telling you that has to go from your temple in order to remove clutter.  Are you more interested in business, family and fun than you are the things of God?

LET JESUS TAKE ACTION – Vs. 16

All Jesus needs is your cooperation and He will remove the clutter.

Will you let Him?

Will you ask Him to show you the clutter?

Will you let Him remove move it?

It is time for Godly sorrow for the clutter that keeps us from Jesus.  As we confess and forsake, He will remove the clutter.

Psalm 32:5 - I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

James 4:7-10 - Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. [9] Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. [10] Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

LET JESUS TAKE ACTION – Vs. 16

RESPECT JESUS’ AUTHORITY – Vss. Vss. 18-22

Jesus had the authority to cleanse the temple in your day.

He has the authority to cleanse your temple.

But He will only do it as you let Him.

When Jesus is truly Lord in your life, He will take out the clutter and replace it with better things.

These better things belong in the Temple of God.

·        PRESENCE

He will never leave or forsake us.

We can abide Him and enjoy fellowship with Him.

·        PRAISE

We can spend our time and energy giving adoration and thanksgiving to Him.

·        PRAYER

We can constantly bombard the throne of Grace.

·        PRECEPTS

God’s Word is to be our love and joy.

·        POWER

As the Holy Spirit controls us we can be very productive.

·        PARTICIPATION

We have to think and pray about doing good to others before we can actually do good works to benefit others.

Let Jesus be the authority in your life, and your life style is guaranteed to change.

Let the Lord Jesus deal with the clutter!

FULLNESS OF JOY

(A complete lesson)

John 15:11 - These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

·        What is the difference between joy and happiness?

·        Why should we want to have joy?

·        Why does Jesus want us to have joy?

·        What has Jesus done to bring us joy?

·        What is Jesus doing to bring us joy?

·        How would you define “fullness of joy?”

Jesus spoke verses 1-10 so that we might have fullness of joy!

JOY OF PLACEMENT – Vss. 1-2

·        A vine is a source of life and fruitfulness.

·        In the Old Testament Israel was viewed as a vine, but not a true or faithful vine. Isaiah 5:1-2,7

·        Jesus is the true source of life and fruitfulness. John 10:10

·        Every person who is born again is “in Christ”.  He has become part of the vine, and part of the Body of Christ.   1 Corinthians 12:13, 2 Corinthians 5:17

·        The husbandman or gardener is our Heavenly Father.  He is the one who oversees the production of fruit in our lives.

·        We have been placed in Christ, the vine. Why should we be joyful?

JOY OF PRUNING – Vss. 2-3

·        What is the context in these verses?  Is it salvation, fruitfulness, or something else?

·        Given the context, what does the beginning of verse 2 not mean?

·        What is the most important fruit a Christian can produce? Galatians 5:22-26, Ephesians 5:9

·        Other fruit may include the fruit of righteousness or winning souls to Christ. James 3:18, Romans 1:13

·        Why and how does God prune us?  Psalm 66:10, James 1:2-4, Hebrews 12:11

·        What must we remember when we are being “pruned”.  Proverbs 3:11-12

·        How is the Word of God a cleansing agent?

JOY OF PRESENCE – Vss. 4-5

·        How does Christ make His presence known in my life?

·        How do I go about abiding in Christ?  Ephesians 5:18, Hebrews 4:14-16

JOY OF PRODUCTIVITY – Vss. 4-5, 8

·        Why do you think Jesus wants us to be fruitful? (Verse 8 gives us clues.)

·        What happens when a branch is taken off an apple tree?

·        What lesson about being fruitful is hard to learn?  Why?

·        Are trees always fruitful?  What lesson does this teach us?

·        How should Jesus abide in us?  Galatians 2:20, Philippians 3:8-10

JOY OF PRAYER – Vs. 7

·        How will abiding in Christ make your prayers more effective?  Ephesians 6:18, Jude 1:20

·        How will God’s Word make your prayers more effective?  1 John 5:14-15

·        What are some things that we should pray for that we often fail to pray for?

JOY OF PERSEVERANCE – Vss. 9-10

·        Why is perseverance important?

·        How do we continue in the love of Christ?

·        How does obedience bring about joy?

This is a detailed elaboration of a previously shared outline.

2 Corinthians 4:1-5

SERVING GOD

Every Christian should desire to serve God. The Apostle Paul gives us an example of how to serve effectively.

SERVING GOD IS A MATTER OF COURAGE - Vs. 1

God has given us something to do. We must do not fainting, but receiving mercy. God's mercy can get us through any problem.

SERVING GOD IS A MATTER OF CONDUCT - Vs. 2

We are not to act or handle God's Word in a deceitful way.  We are to openly display the truth.

SERVING GOD IS A MATTER OF CONCERN - Vs. 3

If the good news about Jesus is hidden, it is hidden from those who are lost.

SERVING GOD IS A MATTER OF CONFLICT - Vs. 4

Satan has blinded the minds of unbelievers.

SERVING GOD IS A MATTER OF COMMITMENT - Vss. 5

We are to preach Christ and not ourselves.

We are servants to others for Jesus sake.
