Hebrews 1:4-14

BE THANKFUL

Our text for this morning Hebrews 1:4-14 is not what you would normally think of as a “Thanksgiving Text”.  It is actually a comparison of Jesus with the angels and showing that Jesus is actually better than the angels.

Of course the principle subject of the Book of Hebrews is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.  And if there is anyone we should be thankful for at Thanksgiving or any other time of the year it is the Lord Jesus.  As I examined Hebrews 1:4-14 I found at lead 5 reasons that we should be thankful for the Lord Jesus. WE SHOULD BE:

THANKFUL FOR HIS SONSHIP – Vss. 4-7

THANKFUL FOR HIS SCEPTER – Vss. 8-9

THANKFUL FOR HIS STROKE – Vs. 10

THANKFUL FOR HIS STABILITY – Vss. 11-12

THANKFUL FOR HIS SUPERIORITY – Vss. 13-14

BE THANKFUL FOR HIS SONSHIP – Vss. 4-7

Like many people in America today, many Jews had this thing about angels.  They liked to think about angels.  They respected angels.  They thought that angels could get them closer to God.

Angels are indeed special.

They are Spirit beings. Psalm 104:4

They are often God’s messengers.  Throughout the Old Testament and even into the New Testament, angels delivered messages from God.

The angels, in some special way, were involved with the giving of the law. Acts 7:52-53

In spite of how special angels may be, the Lord Jesus is better than they are.

Hebrews 1:4 - Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Names in the Bible were more important than they are today.  Often names reflected a person’s character.

When Jesus had purged our sins, that is died on the cross, was buried and rose again, he went back to Heaven and sat down on “the right hand of the majesty on high.” No angel ever sat at God’s right hand.  That position was reserved for the One who God called “Son”.

Hebrews 1:5 - For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

This portion of Hebrews contains many quotes from the Old Testament.  Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee is a quote from Psalm 2:7.

Jesus has always been God, the Son.

But there was a time of special declaration that Jesus is God the Son.  That took place at the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Acts 13:33, Romans 1:3-4

The second quote in Hebrews 1:5, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son, is a quote from 2 Samuel 7:14. This quote, though it partially refers to Solomon, looks ahead to David’s Greater Son or descendent, the Lord Jesus Christ.  There is a tremendous father/son relationship within the Trinity.

Hebrews 1:6 - And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

Jesus is called “the firstbegotten” or “first born”.

According to Warren Wiersbe “The title is one of rank and honor, for the firstborn receives the inheritance and the special blessing. Christ is the “Fristborn of all creation (Col. 1:15 NASB) because He created all things; and He is the highest of all who came back from the dead (Col. 1:18).”

Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, Volume 2, (Victor Books, A division of Scripture Press, Wheaton, Ill., 1989) p. 281

When Jesus came into the world, the angels worshipped Him, showing His superiority.

Now you may be asking, “So Jesus is the Son of God, why should I be so thankful?”

You should be thankful if you know Jesus as your Savior, if you’ve been born again.  This means that as the Son Jesus sits at the right hand of God.  As the Son Jesus has special access to the Father.

Be thankful because the Lord Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for you! Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 7:24-25, 1 John 2:1-2

BE THANKFUL FOR HIS SCEPTER – Vss. 8-9

Hebrews 1:8 - But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. (A quote of Psalm 45:6)

What is a scepter?  A scepter is a staff held by a ruler.  It is an emblem of authority.

Our Lord Jesus has an emblem of authority. His scepter is a scepter of righteousness. He rules and will rule in righteousness. Isaiah 11:1-5

Be thankful! There is coming a day when nobody will be able to legitimately say that there is any unrighteousness anywhere.  And what’s neat about this is that we, as Christians, are going reign with Christ in His kingdom!

Hebrews 1:9 - Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. (Ps. 45:7)

We are again reminded of Christ’s superiority because of His love for righteousness and hatred of iniquity.

If we know Jesus as Savior, we should love righteousness and hate iniquity also!  We carry His name as Christians and should act accordingly. 1 John 2:6

BE THANKFUL FOR HIS STROKE – Vs. 10

Hebrews 1:10 - And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:  (A quote of Psalm 102:25)

Why does the universe exist?

Why does the world exist?

Why do we have beautiful scenery?

Why do the wonders of nature exist?

Why do you exist?

IT IS BECAUSE OF THE STROKE OF HAND!

BE THANKFUL FOR HIS STABILITY – Vss. 11-12

Vs.  8 - But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:

The Lord’s reign is forever and ever. That’s stability!

Governments are not always stable.

Economies and jobs are not always stable.

Marriages and other relationships are not always stable.

Our minds are not always stable.

But Jesus is always stable.

He has always existed and he always will.

Hebrews 1:10-12 - And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: [11] They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; [12] And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. (A quote of Psalm 102:25-27)

Why this world is not even stable.

There is coming a day when this old world will be taken off and discarded like an old garment.

It shall be replaced with something new. 2 Peter 3:10, Revelation 21:1-2

Through this Christ will continue to exist but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Now why should you and I be thankful for this stability of our Lord?

What has He promised to those that believe on Him for forgiveness and salvation?

He has promised eternal life! John 10:27-28

Jesus would not be able to give us eternal life unless He himself is eternal.  He will never die. He is stable! Be thankful!

BE THANKFUL FOR HIS SUPERIORITY – Vss. 13-14

Hebrews 1:13 - But to which of the angels said he at any times, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? See Psalm 110:1

Jesus is superior to the angels.

Jesus is waiting for His enemies to be made His footstool and He will reign for all eternity.

The angels, however, are not waiting to reign.

The angels, are serving now and will serve in the future.

In fact, we are and will be served by angels.

I can think of three ways angels serve.

1. ANGELS PRONOUNCE

It was an angel that told Zeharias that his wife would have a baby, John the Baptist.

It was an angel that told Mary she’d be the Mother of Jesus.

It was an angel that announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.

2. ANGELS PROTECT

One day the city that Elisha the Prophet was residing in was besieged by an enemy army.  Elisha’s servant was scared. 2 Kings 6:15-17

3. ANGELS PROVIDE

One day the prophet Elijah, after fighting a great battle for the Lord was threatened by Queen Jezebel.  He panicked and ran.  I personally think that he was worn out from praying down fire from Heaven, praying for rain and outrunning King Ahab’s chariot. Jezebel caught Elijah with a threat at a weak moment. He ran.  An angel provided for him.  1 Kings 19:4-6

Be thankful.

Angels are servants.

God will use them to pronounce, protect and provide.

But there is better news than this.

Be thankful because Jesus is superior to the angels.

It is Jesus who sits at the right hand of God.

It is Jesus who is to be thanked and worshipped.

If it weren’t for Jesus, the angels wouldn’t even exist!

LUKE 7:18-30

ONE DISCOURAGED PREACHER,

AM 11/13//05 Life of Christ #21

We want to meet a man who was touched by Jesus who was evidently suffering from depression.  This was a man who had stood firmly for the Lord Jesus and had pronounced that Jesus was coming.  Here was a man who was as bold and as non-institutional as they come.

He called people to repent because the Messiah was coming. He also pointed out the Messiah when he came. Mark 1:6-8, John 1:29-30

I want us to look at the story of one discouraged preacher. Let’s look and see if there are any lessons for us when we get depressed or discouraged.

THE PROBLEM - 18-20 - Depression and doubt had set in.

As we said a couple of moments ago, Jesus had raised the son of the Widow of Nain from the dead. This led to great reports about the Lord Jesus. Luke 7:16-17

Vs. 18 - John's disciples reported to John the Baptist what was happening. Where was John the Baptist at this time?

He was in prison! Luke 3:19-20

John, the no-nonsense preacher of righteousness had taken a stand concerning Herod's sin. Now he was paying by being in jail.

Life isn't always fair. You can be doing exactly what God wants you to do and still end up facing tough situations.

So here is this bold, brazen preacher of righteousness sitting in a jail cell. He hears reports about Jesus. John, in his thinking, begins to doubt.  John was undoubtedly looking for Jesus to set up His kingdom. He was looking for Him to have a bold, brash, approach. He was probably expecting Jesus to take over! Remember what John had predicted? Matthew 3:11-12

Jesus was probably taking a kinder, gentler approach.

So John shows signs of doubt.

Remember that there is a difference between doubt and unbelief.

It is possible for the greatest saints to have times of doubt and even wanting to give up.

John simply wanted to know.  Are you really the Messiah, or should we look for another? I'm sure the months spent in a dark, damp jail cell were enough to get anyone discouraged.

I think John's message was his way of saying, "If you're the Messiah, get busy!”

“If you're the Messiah get the Kingdom set up!

“If you're the Messiah, get me out of this place!"

You wouldn't want anyone to judge your life's work based on a bad moment or two when you lost it! So let's not judge John based on a moment or two when he struggled. John was a great man of God!

THE PROOF - 21-23 - Look at the truth!

In this passage, Jesus plays "show and tell" with John's disciples.

Vs. 20 - They give Jesus John's message.

Vs. 21 - Jesus shows them what He has been doing.

It was show and tell time!

Jesus cast out demons, healed people and made the blind to see!  John wanted to know "Jesus, are you the Messiah?" Jesus answered by giving the John's disciples a report to send back to their leader.

Vs. 22 - Jesus gives John's disciples the message.

             "You tell John what's happening."

And what was happening, was in fulfillment of Old

Testament prophecy about the Messiah." Isaiah 61:1-2, 29:18-19

Jesus says "John, this is what is happening in fulfillment of prophecy about me. This is the truth! Then He adds in verse 23, And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

John was in danger of being offended or trapped because of Jesus.  He doubted because of what Jesus was not doing, instead of trusting in what He was doing!

The blessed man is the believer who doesn't get trapped by what God is not doing in their lives.

It is very easy to doubt when God is not doing what we think God should be doing.

In a gentle way, Jesus was saying, "Trust me!"

May we take this to heart! Meditate upon the positive things that God is doing in your life, the lives of your friends and in your church and community. When discouraged, remember what God has done, and what He has promised to do. His promises have never failed.  Concentrate on the truth! Psalm 27:13, Psalm 119:15-16, Psalm 143:5

THE PRAISE - 24-30 - God is keeping score!

Jesus had a message for John - "Hang in there!"

Jesus also had a message for those who were in his audience - "John is a great man!"

God is keeping track of all we say and do.

God will reward Christians according to their works. 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 4:5,

Vs. 24 - Jesus asks, "When you went out to see John, did you go to see someone who was so wishy washy that he was like a reed being blown by the wind?"

The answer, of course, was "No"! Part of the appeal of John the Baptist was that he was so firm, so bold, and so sure about what he was saying!

Vs. 25 - Jesus then asks if they went out to see a man who was well to do! Again the answer was "no!" Well to do people were in king's courts.

They went to the wilderness to see a man who was concerned about eternal things, and not comfortable things. I wonder how much more would be accomplished by Christians today if they were more concerned about getting out God's Word than being comfortable! Matthew 6:24, 33

Verse 26 - The true prophets of God were great men.

They went to the wilderness to hear a great man of

                God!

But Jesus says that John was more than a prophet!

John was a great man because He was the last Old Testament prophet.

John was a great man because He was closest to Jesus and knew Jesus personally. He was even related.

John was a great man because He was prophesied about in the Scriptures.

Vs. 27 is a quote of Malachi 3:1

Isaiah 40:3 called John, The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Vs. 28 - What a compliment Jesus pays here. There was none greater born to women than John the Baptist.

But Jesus doesn't stop there. He says that the least in the kingdom of God is greater than John.

Vss. 29-30 - John was sitting in jail. Why?

John's ministry had an impact on the common men and sinners. They heard John and repented!

The Pharisees and scribes were too good for John's Baptism and rejected his message. If they had followed John's teaching, they would not have stood for John being in prison.

God is never fooled. He knows who serves Him and who doesn't.

God will give praise to those who deserve it.

And note that Jesus waited for John's disciples to leave.

Then wasn't the time to praise John. He would receive his reward later.

Now is not necessarily the time for us to receive praise, but if we are faithful, it will come later.

THE PROBLEM – Depression and Doubt had set in.

THE PROOF – Look at the truth.

THE PRAISE – God is keeping score.

JAMES 1:9-12 - PAGE 1

FAITH WORKS SCRIPTURALLY, PM 11/13/05

FAITH WORKS #5

For us to be all that we should be for our Lord Jesus Christ, we must apply our faith to the proper learning of God’s Word.  In James 1:18-21 we see three important concepts.

REGENERATION BY THE WORD OF GOD – Vs. 18

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “Why am I child of God?”

The obvious answer is that you were born again by the work of the Spirit of God through faith. John 3:1-7, John 1:1213

But James gives two more answers to the question, “Why am I a child of God?”

Of his own will begat he us…

You are a child of God because God willed you to be a child of God.  This fact may be hard for us to accept if we think that we have any goodness or merit in ourselves. But, if we think of the greatness of our sin, and how spiritually dead we were, it makes sense that God had to choose to save us.

Ephesians 2:1-7, 1:3-6

James 1:18 - Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth,

God willed you to be a child of God, and God provided a channel through which you could understand salvation and trust Christ as your Savior. The channel is the Word of truth.

It is through the Word of truth that we understand that we are sinners.

It is through the Word of truth that we learn that Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again.

It is through the Word of truth that we learn that God loves us.

It is through the Word of truth that we learn that we must place our faith in Christ. Romans 10:17, 1 Peter 1:23, James 1:18,

 ures.

There was a celebration of the giving of the first fruits of the harvest to God.  James as an early Christian, saw he and other Christians as the beginning of a glorious harvest.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD OF GOD – Vss. 19-20

James 1:19-20 - Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

We were born again by the Word of truth.

Does the Word have any importance after we are saved?

Of course it does! 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Romans 15:4

As a result of the value of the word of God, we are to be “swift to hear”.

·        I should be eager to hear the Word of God whether I read it or have it taught to me.

·        I should be attentive to the Word of God, wanting to learn from it.

·        I should not shun the reading or the preaching of the Word of God.

·        I should not make excuses for not hearing or reading the Word, but should seek opportunities to do so. 1 Peter 2:1-3, 2 Peter 3:18

We are also to be slow to speak.

The churches in James’ day were fairly open.  People were allowed to put in their “two cents” worth.

It is possible that people would start to speak in response to what was being said.

I think that James is telling us to hear completely before we respond.

All too often we start to respond because we don’t like what we hear.

With the Word of God, we must hear completely before we respond to it. Proverbs 18:13

In responding to the Word of God,

James 1:19-20 says, Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

We are to be slow to wrath.

We don’t always like what we read in the Word of God because it convicts us.

We don’t always like what we hear preached in the Word of God because it convicts us.

There has been many a Christian who has gotten angry when the Word of God has been preached, taught, or read.

It is easy to get angry when we initially hear something we don’t like or disagrees with our life style.

I am sure there have been people angry with me down through the years.

But in responding to the teaching or reading of the Word we are to be slow in getting angry over it.

There is a good reason for that.

Man’s anger does not work God’s righteousness.

Instead of getting angry, we should search the Scriptures to see if what is being said is true.  If it is, we shouldn’t get angry, but do what the Scripture says.

RECEPTION OF THE WORD OF GOD – Vs. 21

James 1:21 - Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Have you ever considered confessing all known sins before reading your Bible?

Have you ever considered confessing all known sin before listening to a sermon?

To get the most out of a sermon or Bible Study, we should confess all filthiness, that is, moral impurity.  We should confess all superfluity of naughtiness, that is, all wickedness or vice that we know of within us.

We already heard Peter say, Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

Anything that will hinder the Spirit of God using the Word of God in my life should be confessed and forsaken.

Then I will be in the proper position to humbly receive the Word of God.

Once I have placed myself in a humble, submissive position, I am ready to hear what God has to say. I am ready to humbly accept God’s opinion.

A lot of people don’t humbly receive the engrafted or implanted word because there are weeds in the soil.

The weeds must be removed before someone can actually see the Word of God bear fruit in their lives.

The engrafted word is able to save our souls.

Wait a minute!

I’m already saved!

Yes, if you know the Lord Jesus as your Savior, you are.

However, the humbly received word received in good soil will save you from the problems caused by sin now.

It will save you from a lot of grief.

SHARING OUR FAITH

THE NEED

Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:36 - He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Luke 16:19-31 - There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, [21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. [24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. [25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. [27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: [28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. [29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. [30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. [31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Revelation 20:11-15 - And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. [12] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. [13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. [14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

THE COMMAND

Matthew 28:18-20 - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mark 16:15 - And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 - And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; [19] To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. [20] Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

LET’S GET SERIOUS!

(A Topical Message)
