ALL HE WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS

When I was a boy there was a song that went, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.”  More recently I have become familiar with the song, “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”.

Without answering out loud, what do you want for Christmas?  Is it a toy, a game, some new clothes, something for the computer? Or is it something more altruistic, like a change in somebody’s attitude, more love in your family, or peace in Iraq?

Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday.  And now you may answer out loud, what do you think Jesus wants for Christmas?

Of course Jesus is God and doesn’t need any of the traditional presents like toys, games, food, or clothes.

Jesus is God and is very comfortable and authoritative.

Hebrews 1:1-4 - God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; [4] Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

So what does Jesus wants for Christmas?

I would like to suggest to you that all Jesus wants for Christmas is your acceptance. He has everything else. He wants you to accept Him for who He is and what He has done.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LAMB FOR YOU LIFE

Luke 2:11 - For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

John 1:29 - The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

1 Peter 1:18-19 - Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Revelation 5:12 - Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

John 3:16-18 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE

1 John 4:19 - We love him, because he first loved us.

Matthew 22:37-40 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

John 14:21 - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Revelation 2:4 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Luke 14:26-27 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [27] And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS LORD IN YOUR LIFE

John 13:13 - Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Luke 9:23-24 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LAMB FOR YOU LIFE

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE

ACCEPT HIM AS LORD IN YOUR LIFE

A COLOSSIAN CHRISTMAS

Colossians 1:14-19

Christmas With Paul #3 of 3

¯    Why is Christ the “star of Christmas”?

¯    What are some of the different things that take Christ out of Christmas?

¯    How do Christians inadvertently take Christ out of Christmas?

¯    What can we do to make sure that Christ gets the attention He deserves this Christmas in our families and personal lives?

We are considering Christmas with Paul.  In this study we want to see that Christ should be revered as the “star of Christmas” because of who he is and what he has done.

JESUS IS REDEEMER – Vs. 14

·        What is redemption?

·        Why is redemption necessary?

·        Why is the shedding of Christ’s blood necessary?

·        Why was the shedding of Christ’s blood so precious?

1 Peter 1:18-19 - Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

JESUS IS REFLECTOR – Vs. 15a

·        Why should we want to know what God is like?

·        How does Jesus show us what God is like?

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus said in John 14:9 …He that hath seen me hath seen the Father;

JESUS HAS RANK – Vs. 15b

·        Why is it a privilege to be the “first born”?

Charles Erdman - "'Firstborn' here means two things: priority in time and supremacy in place or position. Christ existed before the Creation, but He held the rank commonly assigned to the 'firstborn,' the rank of eminence and dominion.  Christ is thus declared to be the universal sovereign." Charles Erdman, The Epistles of Paul to the Colossians and to Philemon, © 1966 by W.L. Jenkins, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Page 52

·        How should Jesus’ rank affect us?

·        Why do we often forget about Jesus’ rank?

JESUS IS RESPONSIBLE – Vss. 15-16

·        What two things is Jesus responsible for in these two verses?

·        Why should each of these two things be a comfort to us?

·        What are some specific visible things that Jesus has created?

·        What are some of the invisible things that Jesus created?

·        If Jesus holds the universe together, He can certainly hold your life together.  When have you felt Jesus doing this?

JESUS IS RULER – Vss. 18-19

·        What does Jesus have that others often want? Why does Jesus deserve it?

·        How should Jesus be the head of the church here at Mt. Union?

·        What does “firstborn from the dead” mean?

·        What is the fullness that dwells in Jesus and why is it important?

IT'S CHRISTMAS!

As you drive through neighborhoods this time of year, you see many light displays, reminding you that it's Christmas.  Turn on the television and you will see many special holiday programs and commercials, telling you that it's Christmas.  Go to the stores and the merchants don't want you to forget that it's Christmas.  Come to church and you will notice the decorations, music, Scripture Readings and Sermons are telling you that it's Christmas.  Over the next several moments, let's remind ourselves of the true meaning of Christmas as we consider:

THE POWER OF CHRISTMAS - Isaiah 7:14, Luke 1:30-35

God's power is shown at Christmas through the Virgin Birth.

THE PROCLAMATION OF CHRISTMAS - Luke 2:11

The angel tells the shepherds that a Savior is born who is Christ the Lord.

THE PRAISE OF CHRISTMAS - Luke 2:13-14

The angel choir gives praise to God, reminding us that praise is our responsibility.

THE PROPONENTS OF CHRISTMAS

The Shepherds - Luke 2:15-20

Simeon - Luke 2:25-35

Anna - Luke 2:36-39

The Wise Men - Matthew 2:1-12

Micah 5:2 etc.

BETHLEHEM

A CITY OF DESTINY - Micah 5:2

A CITY OF DELIGHT - Luke 2:11

A CITY OF DEATH - Matthew 2:8, 11-18

It was a city of death because of the unbelief of Herod. If Herod had believed, he would not have tried to kill Jesus. Today, there is still death when a person does not believe in Christ. John 3:16-18

WISE MEN STILL

There are many wise people mentioned in the Bible.

There were Enoch and Noah, wise enough to walk with God.

There was Ruth, wise enough to say to her Jewish mother-in-law,

"...for whither thou goest I will go; and whither thou lodgest, I will

lodge; Thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God; (Ruth 1:16)

There was Andrew, who was wise enough to bring people to Jesus.

There was David, who was wise enough to say "The Lord is my shepherd, I

shall not want."

There was Martha, wise enough entertain Jesus in her home.

There was Martha's sister, Mary, wise enough to set at Jesus feet and hear

his word.

And, of course, there were the three wise men, who came to Jesus when he was

born.

There are still wise men (and women) today. God is looking for wise men who

will imitate the qualities of the wise men of Matthew 2.

WISE MEN STILL COME - Vss. 1-10

WISE MEN STILL WORSHIP - Vss. 2, 11

WISE MEN STILL GIVE - Vs. 11

WISE MEN STILL LISTEN - Vs. 12
