Joshua 14:6-16

FAITH ENDURES

God does not always keep His promises with the speed that we wish he would.  There are times when God expects us to trust Him for what seems to us a long time before we see Him keep His promise.  One Bible character who teaches endurance by faith is Caleb. He waited for 45 years for God to keep His promises and it doesn't seem like he even got

discouraged by the wait.

It is time to divide the conquered land of Canaan.  The Tribe of Judah is receiving her portion. Caleb, along with other tribal leaders visits Joshua. Caleb approaches Joshua concerning the promise of God.

FAITH'S REMEMBRANCE Vss. 6-9

You will probably want to take your listeners back to Numbers 13::1-14:10 as you discuss Caleb's recollections.

Psalm 12

SOUND THE ALARM!

When the an alarm sounds it is a warning. A burglar alarm wars of

thieves. A fire alarm warns of fire.  When in the hospital recently, if I

moved the wrong way, an alarm sounded on the I.V., bringing a nurse to

adjust it.  Psalm 12 is alarm that should make Christians alert to danger.

A CONCERN - Vss. 1-2 -  "Help Lord; for the godly man ceaseth..."

A CONCLUSION - Vss. 3-5 - "The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips..."

A COMFORT - Vss. 6-7 - "The words of the Lord are pure words..."

A CAUTION - Vs. 8 - "The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest

men are exalted."

Matthew 12:22-32

IMPACT – A.M. 1/15/06,

LIFE OF CHRIST #23

The words of others have impacted us all.  Sometimes the impact was positive and other times the impact was negative.  Sometimes the words of others have blessed us and other times they have hurt us deeply. Our words have also had impact.  The words we say often have a positive or a negative impact on others.

After a long layover, we return to our systematic study of the life of Christ. We are trying to study His life in a chronological way.  The last time we studied the Life of Christ, Jesus had been invited to the home of a Pharisee where a repentant woman washed his feet with her tears, dried them with her hair and anointed Him with expensive perfume.  Jesus’ host, a Pharisee, was the exact opposite and showed none of the common courtesies that a host of that day was supposed to show.

A short time after this event there was a miraculous healing.

In Matthew 12:22, we are told of a demon possessed man who was brought to Jesus.  As a result of demon possession he was blind and couldn’t speak.  Jesus healed the man so that he could see and speak.

As a result of this event all sorts of words were used.  Let’s look at the impact of these words.

THE IMPACT OF INQUIRING WORDS – Vs. 23

Vs. 23 – The people are amazed! They are in awe.

They start to ask questions. They asked, “This couldn’t be the Son of David, could it?”

The term “Son of David” was a term used in reference to Israel’s coming Messiah.  The people were beginning to think of Jesus in terms of His being their Messiah.

They were on the right track!  In fact that was one of the purposes of the miracles was to show that He was their Messiah.

It was good that they were making inquiries.  It was good that they were trying to figure out His identity.

It is good that you and I make inquiries into things.

Sometimes the Lord is trying to teach us something through our circumstances. Proverbs 3:11-12

When we suspect that the Lord might be disciplining us, we need to inquire, “Lord, what are you trying to tell me.”

Another type of inquiry we should make is concerning the Scriptures.  It is good for us to ask questions.  It is good for us to inquire about the meaning of passages we are reading.

It is good for us to ask questions that help us apply the Word of God to our own lives. 2 Timothy 2:15

When Paul and Silas were on the second missionary journey in the Book of Acts, they were forced to leave Thessalonica because of persecution.  From there they went to a town called Berea. Acts 17:11-12

Perhaps you are one who has heard the message of salvation, that you need to trust Jesus as your Savior, but you are yet to make up your mind to do so.  I encourage you to inquire, to talk to me, to search the Scriptures.  This could help you make that very important decision to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.

Christian, real growth will come as you start to study the Word of God for yourself.  Like the Bereans, you should respond to the preaching the Word of God by searching it out for yourself, and making sure that what you are being taught is accurate.  Also in studying for yourself, you will find additional blessings in the Word of God.

The more you inquire into Spiritual things the more you will learn.  The more you learn and apply your findings to your own life, the more Christ-like you will become!

THE IMPACT OF INCRIMINATING WORDS – Vs. 24

Vs. 24 – There were those who were in opposition to Jesus.  They were constantly trying to find reasons to discredit Him and to incriminate him as a wrong doer.

The Pharisees, the religious fundamentalists of their day, were often at the forefront of offering criticism.

A notable miracle had been accomplished. An exorcism had taken place.  Often those performing exorcisms would use all sorts of interesting means.

Jesus was different. He directly exorcised demons.  He had more power than any would-be sorcerer ever did.

The Pharisees could not deny the miracle, so they cried to incriminate Jesus by saying that He was casting out demons in the name of the prince of demons, Beelzebub.  They accused Jesus of performing his exorcisms in the name of the Devil!  They were saying that Jesus’ ministry was not of God, but of Satan!

Those were demeaning, incriminating words!

Do we ever use them?

Do we ever criticize a ministry or another church, without really knowing what’s going on there?

Do we ever criticize another brother or sister in Christ, with information we think is true, but we’re not sure?

Do we ever evaluate another person’s motives, ministry or behavior in such a way that incriminates them? Romans 14:4, James 4:11-12

THE IMPACT OF INSTRUCTIVE WORDS –

Vss. 25-29

Jesus was falsely accused. The attack against Him was brutal. But the first thing Jesus did was to instruct.  He showed how ludicrous it was for the Pharisees to say that He was casting out Satan’s demons in the name of Satan.

Vs. 25 – Jesus begins by saying a divided house can not stand. That’s great advice for all situations. Something that’s divided can not stand.

Vs. 26 – If Satan is casting out Satan, his kingdom will not stand. If Satan were casting out his own demons, he would have been working against himself! Satan is too smart for that!

Vs. 27 – The Pharisee’s evidently had disciples, children if you will, who cast out demons and somewhat successfully. If Jesus was casting out demons in the name of the devil, did that mean that their disciples were doing the same thing?

Vs. 28 – If Jesus was not casting out demons in Satan’s power, then it would mean that he was doing it in God’s power.  That would mean the Kingdom of God had arrived.

And if the Kingdom of God had arrived, the one who had arrived was God’s King, the Messiah!  He was the “Son of David”. The crowds had the right idea.

Vs. 29 – You can’t rob a strong man’s house unless you restrict the strong man. Satan’s demons can not be evicted unless Satan is restricted in his power.

Jesus bound the strong man, Satan, and had the victory.

The Pharisees’ accusations were ridiculous, and Jesus gave instruction to prove it.

The instructive Words of the Lord Jesus showed how foolish the incriminating words of the Pharisees were.

We as Christians should remember that our instructions are to come from God and His Word.

The Lord Jesus is God, we should learn from His Words as recorded in Scripture.

The whole Bible is the inspired by God. We are to learn from God’s Word.

Let us also remember that the words we use are to be instructive words.  We are not to go around tearing down but building up. Ephesians 4:29

When you wonder if you should share a certain tidbit of information with another, remember that God says, “If it isn’t edifying, don’t share it!”

THE IMPACT OF INDICTING WORDS – Vss. 30-37

If anyone can indict, or charge with wrong doing, or accurately accuse, it is our Lord.  He uses indicting words here.

Vs. 30 – Jesus is blunt. “If you not on my side. If your faith is not in Me, then you are opposed to me. You are against me.”

There is no such thing as being neutral about the Lord Jesus!

Someone may say, “I’m not opposed to Jesus, I just haven’t trusted Him as Savior the way you do.”

My friend, if you haven’t trusted Jesus, you are opposed to Jesus whether you think so or not.

And if you are not gathering with Him by serving Him in ministry, you are scattering. You are hurting His ministry. By doing nothing for the cause of Christ you are hurting His ministry.

Vss. 31-32 – These are heavy words.  These are disturbing words of indictment.  These are words, which I, for one misunderstood at one time.

Remember, first of all, that our God is a forgiving God. Ephesians 1:7, 1 John 1:9, Psalm 32:5

God is very gracious in the scope of His forgiveness.  God forgives even sins against the Lord Jesus, the Son of Man.

The sin that did not receive forgiveness was the sin against the Holy Ghost.  That sin was attributing the works of the Spirit of God done through Jesus Christ, to the devil.

It was calling the works of the Spirit of God done in Jesus the work of the Devil.

I believe that this sin was unpardonable because someone that hard-hearted would never repent and turn to the Lord Jesus in faith.

Is there any unpardonable sin today?

The only unpardonable sin is refusing to place your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior.  If you fail to do that, there is no Heaven for you! John 3:36

There is a day in the life of each person who does not know Jesus Christ as Savior, when there is no more opportunity to receive Christ.  God will take his or her life, and he or she will go into eternity without Christ.  We don’t know when that day is, so it behooves you if you do not know Christ as Savior to trust Him this morning. He died for your sins. He was buried. He rose again. All you need to do is make a full faith commitment to Him.

Words have impact!

Acts 1:1-11 - PAGE 1

MARCHING ORDERS,

The Model Church, Lesson 1

Over the next several weeks we plan to study the early church as found in Acts 1-12.  This church, in many ways, is the model of how we should do things, and what we should expect to happen in church as we obey God.

This week we consider the directions our Lord gave the early church, as he left for Heaven by way of the Ascension.

Although called the "Acts Of The Apostles", it might better be called the "Acts Of The Holy Spirit", for it is His work in building the early church that is featured.  In the first 12 chapters we find much about the ministry of Peter.  In the last 16 chapters, Paul is the main character.

PREFACE Vss. 1-3

Vs. 1 – The former treatise was the Gospel of Luke. Luke 1:1-4

Both Luke and Acts were addressed to Theophilus.

The name Theophilus means "Friend Of God". The title would imply that he was some sort of official. Luke's purpose was that of instruction and so that he would know the certainty of what he had been taught.

Vs. 1 - There is an interesting word in this verse. The word is "began".

Luke is the story of what Jesus began to do and teach.

Acts is the continuation of that story.

The only difference, is that Jesus was now in Heaven, and that Jesus was now working through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Vs. 2 - We are shown the extent of the material covered by Luke's Gospel. Luke's Gospel had covered the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven.  The ascension was preceded by commandments given to his apostles.

In the broadest sense, his apostles are all those who were witnesses of the resurrection.  In the strictest sense, the Apostles are the 12.

Vs. 3 – Over a period of 40 days Jesus made several appearances, showing himself to be alive, and giving instruction concerning the Kingdom of God.  I believe Jesus shared with them how the Kingdom would work while he was gone, and what would happen when he established His earthly kingdom.

PROMISE Vss. 4-5

The Apostles were to remain in Jerusalem.

They were to wait for a very special event.

It was the initial baptism and indwelling of the Holy Spirit which God had promised through the Lord Jesus. John 14:16-18, John 16:7-15

Vs. 5 - John's Baptism was symbolic. So is believer's baptism. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the real baptism.

Speaking of Jesus, John the Baptist said in Mark 1:8, I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Believers are baptized today with the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13, Romans 8:9

PROGRAM Vss. 6-8

Vs. 6 - It is very easy for us to criticize the Apostles for this

question.  After all, hadn't Jesus been teaching them?

Notice that Jesus didn't rebuke the Apostles. Why should we?

The disciples had always associated the work of the Messiah with the establishment of the Kingdom of Israel.  If you read the Old Testament prophets such as Isaiah and Zechariah, you will find that this teaching is very much present.  They were looking for the promised Millenial Kingdom. They were not wrong to be looking for it.

"Lord," they were asking, is now the time?

Vs.7 - Here is a great reminder for you and I.

The Apostles were told that it was not for them to know the

exact time of when God would do what was in his power to  do.

There are many people who have gone overboard making predictions about when Jesus would come.  This is not in the realm of things we are to know.

Beloved, when God doesn't tell us things that are under His own jurisdiction, let us not waste our time trying to figure God out.  If God doesn't tell us something, let's just trust him!

Vs. 8 - Here is the program of God for the church. He endues the members of the church with Holy Spirit  Power.

Power to have victory over sin.

Power to live a Godly life.

Power to pray.

Power to bear fruit.

Power to have supernatural joy, thanksgiving, and submission.

But most of all, the purpose of the power of the Holy Spirit is to give power to witness.

We witness by our words. 2 Peter 2:15

We witness by our works. Matthew 5:16

Notice the program of witness began at Jerusalem.

It proceeded to the other side of the tracks, to Samaria.

It went on to the whole world.

Our witness as a church and as individuals begins at our Jerusalem.

It continues to areas not far from here.

It progresses to the whole world.

Don't expect to be a witness to the world until you are a witness to your own Jerusalem.  Some feel called to foreign missions. Foreign missions begins in Jerusalem.

The Great Commission is a three-fold project. Matthew 28:18-20

PROGRESSION Vs. 9

Jesus has progressed to Heaven. In Heaven He sits at the right hand of God interceding for us.

Romans 8:34, Hebrews 4:14-16

How He looks today is described in Revelation 1:12-16

PREDICTION Vss. 10-11

Jesus is coming again.

I do not believe that the angels are talking about the rapture here. I believe that they are talking about his physical coming to earth again.

Zechariah 14:1-4

James 2:14-26

FAITH WORKS GENUINELY

FAITH WORKS #9,

In our church life in America there is much that appears to genuine, but is only imitation. There are many people walking around who claim to be believers or born-again Christians, but they are only imitation. They say that they are saved but they are not genuine.

As you know, just saying something doesn’t necessarily make it so. And all too many people make professions with words which are not backed up by their lives.

The theme of James is “Faith Works”.  In this message we want to see that Faith Works Genuinely.  True faith is genuine faith.

GENUINE FAITH IS NOT JUST WORDS – Vss. 14-17

Words alone don’t save.

Vs. 14 – We have in our churches today entirely too much “easy believism”. If I just say I’m saved; if I just go through the motions of baptism, I’m okay. I have eternal life.

James is refuting this easy believism claim.

Stating that you are saved; giving personal testimony of your faith in Christ is important. But stating your faith in Christ aloud is to be a reflection of something that has really taken place in your heart.

Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Paul is saying that if a man has truly put his faith in Christ in his heart, he will confess it before men.

Unfortunately, easy believism bypasses the heart and just goes to the mouth. No work has taken place in the heart but a person is saying he or she believes with his mouth.

Jesus warns in Matthew 7:21, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Let us understand what James is saying in verse 14.

James is saying that if a man or woman has truly been saved, his life will show it.

There will be more than words. There will be action.

Works will accompany a man’s profession.

Works don’t save you. As Paul says, salvation “is not of works, lest any man should boast.”

But works do indicate that change has take place.  The Gospel is a Gospel of change. 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 Thessalonians 1:9

Anyone who is genuinely saved is genuinely changed from what he was, and from what he would be if he hadn’t been saved.

James asks what profit is there in words of faith that are not backed by good works? He asks can faith without works save a man?

James was not eliminating faith. The question “Can faith save him?” is actually in the original, “that faith”.

James was simply asking, “Could faith that has no evidence of good works be true faith?” The implied answer, of course, is “no”.

Titus 3:5 - Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Note that salvation is a result of being born again, which we know is placing one’s faith in Christ.

Titus 3:8 - This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

The salvation described in Titus 3:5 is to be followed by the works of Titus 3:8.

James and Paul are showing us that a person who has truly been born again will evidence a true change by the way they do good works.

Vss. 15-16 – James gives us an example that the genuine article of faith is more than words.  James mentions a brother or sister believer without proper food or clothing.

Along comes someone else in the congregation who gives words. He tells the person “Go in peace! Be warmed and filled!” That’s like saying, “May the Lord bless you real good!”

There’s nothing wrong with those words, but James says that without helping these people, “What good have you done?

Vs. 17 – James concludes that a faith that is all words and no action is a dead faith, because there is no evidence of a change in life-style.

GENUINE FAITH IS PROVEN BY ACTION – Vs. 18

Vs. 18 – James makes an excellent point here.

One man says “I have faith.”

Another man says, “I have works.”

He says, “Show me your faith without works, and I’ll show you faith with my works.

Just think of the various actions which prove our faith.

One might say, “I have faith that God answers prayer.”

Great! Do you pray and not worry as Philippians 4:6-7 tells us to do.

You might say, “I have faith that Christians are supposed to be thankful.”

Great! Are you continually thankful?

You might say, “I have faith that the unsaved are going to hell.”

Good! What are you doing to show you believe that? Are you inviting them to church and witnessing to them personally.

Read Hebrews 11 and discover that the heroes of faith were men and women of action. And their actions proved their faith.

GENUINE FAITH IS MORE THAT JUST MENTAL ASSENT – Vss. 19-20

There are still very few atheists in this country.

Mostly all believe in God.

And if you ask them, many will say that they believe in Christ.  But genuine faith is more than mental assent to the existence of God or Christ.

Vs. 19 – James says “you believe in God and you are doing well.”

But James then adds this zinger – the devils believe, they know God exists and they tremble!

The demons are scared, but they still aren’t saved.

What is the difference between mere intellectual belief and true belief?

True belief or faith is trust.

Phillips Brooks gave this acrostic for faith – “Forsaking all, I trust Him.”

A person who has true faith in Christ as Savior trusts Him alone for eternal life. He is relying on Christ alone.

Vs. 20 – James concludes that the faith that is just belief with the head is the faith without action. This is not true faith. Remember true faith or trust in Christ will produce change.

GENUINE FAITH IS DEMONSTRATED BY BIBLE CHARACTERS – Vss.21-26

In verses 21-26 James is showing examples of two Bible characters who had genuine faith.

First, they believed God and then they showed it by their actions.

Vs. 21 – The first example is Abraham. Notice that it says he was justified by works.

We normally think of justified as meaning to be “declared righteous”. And indeed, the only way someone can be declared righteous is by faith. Romans 5:1

The word justified can also mean to “vindicate” or “show to be righteous”.

In believe that James is saying that the works of Abraham when he offered Isaac on the altar at God’s command vindicated him, or showed that his faith was real.

Vs. 22 – His faith and works went together. First Abraham had the faith, then he proved that faith with the works of offering Isaac.  This work made his faith complete.  Abraham showed how real his faith by obeying God.

Vs. 23 – 30 years earlier before the offering of Isaac, Abraham was declared righteous on the basis of faith.

That Scripture was shown to be true by his action with Isaac.

Vs. 24 – James is simply saying that this proves that there must be works if there is truly faith.

Vs. 25 – How did the children of Israel know that Rahab had faith in the God of Israel, and wasn’t trying to deceive them?

Her works of hiding the spies, and helping them escape were the works that proved her faith was genuine.

Vs. 26– James concludes with a challenge. “Faith without works is dead, just like the body without the spirit.  A man who has no spirit is a dead man. A faith that has no works is a dead faith.

GENUINE FAITH IS NOT JUST WORDS – Vss. 14-17

GENUINE FAITH IS PROVEN BY ACTION – Vs. 18

GENUINE FAITH IS MORE THAT JUST MENTAL ASSENT – Vss. 19-20

GENUINE FAITH IS DEMONSTRATED BY BIBLE CHARACTERS – Vss.21-26

Revelation 2:1-7

MESSAGE TO A SUFFERING CHURCH

(#2 of 7 simple outlines on the 7 Churches in Revelation)

The Church in Smyrna was being persecuted, but was faithful to the Lord.  Here is the Lord Jesus’ concise message to this church:

I AM ALIVE! – Vs. 8

I AM AWARE! – Vs. 9

I WILL AWARD! – Vss. 10-11

***************************************************************************

SOURCES OF COMFORT

A TOPICAL MESSAGE

For the born again Christian there are at least seven sources of comfort. Perhaps you need them yourself right now, but if not, you can learn where to direct others when they need comfort.

1. THE FATHER

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Psalm 68:5 - A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

Isaiah 26:3-4 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. [4] Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. [7] And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

2. THE SON

1 John 2:1-2 - My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: [2] And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Matthew 11:28-30 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

3. THE HOLY SPIRIT

John 14:16-18 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. [18] I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

John 16:7-15 - Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. [8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: [9] Of sin, because they believe not on me; [10] Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; [11] Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. [12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. [13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. [15] All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

4. THE WORD OF GOD

Romans 15:4 - For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

5. THE PREACHING OF GOD'S WORD

2 Timothy 4:2 - Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

6. THE BRETHREN

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Romans 12:15 - Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Galatians 6:2 - Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

7. THE FUTURE

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 - But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
