Selected Scriptures

MOTHERS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Give some of your own examples of mothers who made a difference in their children's lives.

Here are four examples from God's Word of mother's who made a difference in the lives of their children.

THE PROTECTIVE MOTHER - Exodus 2:1-4

Moses' Mother made sure that Moses was protected, even when Moses was in great danger.

Godly mothers protect their children physically, morally, emotionally and spiritually.

THE SUPPORTIVE MOTHER - 1 Samuel 1:24-28

Hannah had promised God that if she had a male child, she would give him to the Lord.

Samuel was born and at an early age taken to the Lord's house to be a servant.

Hannah continued to support the boy by providing for his needs. (1 Samuel 2:9)

Hannah is a model for all parents of Christian children.  Our children should be given over to the Lord for whatever purpose He has for them.  And whatever the Lord chooses to do with that child, we, as parents, should be supportive.

THE INSTRUCTIVE MOTHER - 2 Timothy 1:5 and 3:15

Timothy's mother and grandmother set the example of faith.

Timothy was taught the Scriptures at a very early age.

THE LOYAL MOTHER - John 19:25

Mary was loyal to her son to the point of death.

We need to be loyal to our children to the end.

This does not mean we should approve of our children's sin.

We should, however, be loyal to our children wherever they are, and whatever they are doing.

Ruth 1 and 3

MOTHER IN-LAW

There have been many jokes about mother in-laws (You may tell one or two, if you feel so led.), however there have been many good and godly mother in-laws.  My mother in-law, Grace Adams, was a Christian woman who quietly worked behind the scenes to help those in need.

In the book of Ruth we meet Naomi, who was by no means perfect, but in the end, had a positive witness on her daughter in-law, Ruth.  Here is her story.

SHE WANDERED FROM GOD - 1:1-5

In a time of famine Naomi went with her husband Elimelech into the land of Moab.

They should have remained in God's land among God's people.

During this time of wandering her sons married unsaved girls, Moabites.

Her husband died, and so did her sons.

SHE WENT HOME - 1:6-7

She was returning to God's land of blessing.  She was coming back to where she once had been.

SHE WITNESSED TO HER DAUGHTERS IN-LAW - 1:8-18

This was not traditional witnessing as we would think of it.

However, she must have talked enough about the Lord, that Ruth was willing to follow her and claim her God.

Naomi actually tried to send her daughters in-law back, and Orpah did return to Moab.

Her influence on Ruth was strong enough, however, that she stayed by Naomi and went to Israel with her. She also claimed the God of Israel as her God.

Mother in-laws can have a very strong influence on their daughters and sons in-law for good or bad.

SHE WORKED TOWARDS RUTH'S WELL-BEING - 3:1-4

It was Naomi who told Ruth to approach Boaz, seeking that he redeem her as a kinsman-redeemer.

It was her advice that led to the redemption of Ruth, her marriage to Boaz, and the birth of Obed, the grandfather of David. See chapters 3-4 to fill in the details.

Psalm 36

TELLING IT LIKE IT IS

Digging Deeper in The Psalms #2

I call Psalm 36 God “tells it like it is”.  Indeed God always does tell it like it is, but especially in Psalm 36 I see David under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit being blunt. David’s bluntness was not just in a negative but also in a positive sense.  In this Psalm I find:

THE CONDITION OF THE WICKED, Vss. 1-4

We know nothing about when this Psalm was written.   There is an interesting line in the title however. David is called the servant of the Lord. The servant of the Lord should be the one who “tells it like it is”.  He should speak as God directs him to speak and not be bound by the opinions of others.

Vs. 1 – There was an “oracle” or a “word” within the heart concerning the wicked.  God was showing David the condition of the wicked.  He “tells it like it is” and shares it with us.

First, note that there is no fear of God before his eyes. Here the word would mean dread or terror.  It is not the same word usually used for “fear” which carries the thought of reverence.

I personally feel that the point is that if the wicked had any true dread of God, they would not do what they do.  Many times people have changed their behavior simply out of fear of an individual, such as a parent.  The wicked, however, do not even dread God.

Vs. 2 – he flattereth himself with his own eyes…

A wicked person is self-deceived and doesn’t think that he has done anything wrong.  He flatters himself to think that he’s okay.

Vs. 3 - The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit:

Do you know why a wicked man’s words are iniquity and deceit?  It is because of the condition of his heart. Proverbs 12:5, Jeremiah 17:9, Luke 6:45, Psalm 36:3,

Vs. 3 - The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

Ephesians 5:15-16 - See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, [16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

The Spirit-filled Christian will walk circumspectly.

The wicked will not. He will not regard wisdom and doing what is good important.

Vs. 4 – A wicked person will lay in bed and make evil plans.  When he gets up he will be set or locked in to a way which is not good.

Another problem with the wicked is he abhorreth not evil.

A righteous person will hate evil, but not necessarily evil people.  We are to “love sin and hate the sinner.” 1 Peter 3:10-11

We need to be concerned for the wicked.  Without a change caused by trusting the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, they are doomed!

THE COMPASSION OF GOD

Here we see how God is different from the wicked.

Verses 5-6 show us four great qualities of God.

1.     Mercy, love, or lovingkindness

Vs. 5 - In spite of our sinfulness, God loves us.

In spite of our failures, God loves us.

In spite of our humanity, God loves us.

God never stops loving you.

It reaches into the heavens, and the heavens continue on and on and on. Romans 8:35-39

2.     Faithfulness

Vs. 5 - The faithfulness being referred to is the faithfulness of God’s spoken word.  If God promises to do it. He will. Numbers 23:19, Isaiah 46:11

3.     Righteousness

Vs. 6 - Thy righteousness is like the great mountains…

Great mountains are only moveable by God.

Our God is a righteous God.

He will only do what is right.

He will only stand for what is right. Psalm 119:142, 145:17

4.     Judgments or Justice

Psalm 36:6 - …thy judgments are a great deep:

Our righteous God carries out His justice.

When the Lord Jesus returns to earth to reign He will carry out His justice. Isaiah 11:4-5

The Lord Jesus will also judge the unsaved dead. Revelation 20:12

And the Lord will judge the saved dead. 2 Corinthians 5:10

Psalm 36:6 - Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

God in His keeping power takes care of men and animals.

We can rest in the fact that God is caring for us.

Vs. 7 – God doesn’t literally have wings. He is a Spirit.

But this, nonetheless is the picture of God protecting us in the security of being under His wings.  It is like a mother bird protecting her young from danger.

Vs. 8 – I believe that we can think of God’s Spiritual blessings as being abundantly satisfied “with the fatness” of His house.

Notice it says “abundantly” satisfied.

God will give you satisfaction from His house!

Here are some verses that tell us this: Psalm 65:4, Psalm 16:11, Galatians 5:22-23, 1 John 5:11,

John 16:33

Vs. 8 – The word pleasures here as the same root as the word Eden.  God gave His pleasures to Adam in Eden.

God gives us His pleasures in Christ!

Vs. 9 - For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

Spiritual life, and eternal life are found in the Lord Jesus Christ.

If we have the Lord Jesus, we have these three kinds of life!

THE CRY OF THE RIGHTEOUS, Vss. 10-12

David, in his integrity, tells it like it is.

He tells God, and us, that he and us need God’s help.

Vs. 10 – David teaches us a lesson here.  We are not to take God’s lovingkindness or righteousness for granted. We are to ask God for help.

Notice who the recipients of lovingkindness are – they are the ones who know God. The ones who know God are the ones who know the Lord Jesus as their Savior.

We have every right to seek God’s lovingkindness because we know Him.

Also, it is the upright in heart who will experience God’s righteousness.

Vs. 11 – David is asking for protection from the proud.

And you will notice that very often it is another’s person pride that causes us trouble.

When a person is proud, they want things their way and they want to laud it over you. Psalm 86:14

I believe it wise to not only seek God to protect us from the proud, but from our own pride.

It is our pride that will not admit a wrong.

It is our own pride that will not forgive.

It is our pride that makes us rude and arrogant.

Vs. 11 – David also saw that the wicked wanted to remove Him and he asked for protection.

When you see someone wanting to remove you, ask God for protection.

Vs. 12 – By faith, David saw the answer to His prayer. His confidence reminds me of Mark 11:22-24.

David tells it like it is.

JOHN 1:1-5

BEFORE BIRTH

Life of Christ #1

Is Jesus your Lord?

Is Jesus your Savior?

Is Jesus your God?

If He is, shouldn’t you know as much about His life and ministry and how it affects your life as possible?

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Luke 6:40 - The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

How can we walk as he walked if we don’t know how he walked?

How can we be like our Master if we don’t know what our Master is like?

Usually when we study the life of the Lord Jesus it is through a single sermon or a series on one of the Gospels. It is rare when an actual study is made on the life of Christ. Such a study would try to look at the life of the Lord Jesus in some sort of Chronological order and include studying in all the Gospels.

I have never preached such a series, but feel that now is the time to do so.  This will take a long time, but it will help you become more familiar with the life of the one we call Lord and Master. In this study we will not go into much detail on the various sermons, but will emphasize the events and briefer teachings that were part of His life and ministry.

The life of Jesus did not begin at birth or even conception.  The Lord Jesus had a very active life before He ever came to earth.  It is important that we understand this, because it helps us grasp just who this person is whom we call “LORD” Jesus!

In John 1:1-5 we see Jesus’ true genealogy.  We find out that Jesus came from Heaven where He existed as “The Word”.

Why is He is called "The Word"?

What is the purpose of words?

Words express a thought, or an action or an object or an idea.

The Lord Jesus is the “word”, the expression, the thought the idea, of who God is! John 14:8-9

We know more about God, because he is revealed through The Word, The Son of God!

As we look at our Lord’s history before birth, we are looking at Him as “the Word”.  Let’s consider:

THE PREEXISTENCE OF THE WORD – Vss. 1-2

John 1:1-2 - In the beginning was the Word…The same was in the beginning with God.

If you are going to worship the Lord Jesus, He should be superior to you.

There is a specific time you started living. At conception you became alive in your mother’s womb.

For Jesus there was no such starting time. He is eternal. He has always existed. He is superior to you.

In the beginning was the Word…

This beginning goes back before creation into eternity past.

In the Greek language the word was means “was continuing”.

There was never a time when Jesus did not exist. Micah 5:2, Colossians 1:17, Revelation 22:13

THE PRESENCE OF THE WORD - Vss. 1

John 1:1-2 - … and the Word was with God… The same was in the beginning with God.

Jesus was with God in eternity past. He was present.

Jesus was with God in Heaven. He was present.

According to R. Kent Hughes – ”Next the apostle adds, ‘and the Word was with God.’ Literally, ‘the Word was continually toward God.’  The Father and the Son were continually face to face. The preposition “with” bears the idea of nearness, along with a sense of movement toward God. That is to say, there has always existed the deepest equality and intimacy in the Holy Trinity.” R. Kent Hughes,

Preaching the Word, John – That You May Believe, (Wheaton Illinois, Crossway Books, 1999) p. 16

If I were ushered into the presence of God the father, I would be on my knees. I would not be on the same level as He. Jesus however, is able to look at God face to face, because He is on the same level.

Think of this.  The very Son of God was on equal level with the Father. He could look God in the eye, so to speak.  And He left this position of power and importance to be born of a virgin and go to the cross to die for our sins.  WHAT LOVE! Philippians 2:5-9

THE POSITION OF THE WORD - Vss. 1

John 1:1 - …and the Word was God. Isaiah 9:6

You might have heard it said, that Jesus never claimed to be God.  That is not true. John 8:56-59

The Jews understood that Jesus claimed to be “I AM” or Jehovah, the preexistent God.

THE POWER OF THE WORD - Vs. 3

John 1:3 - All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Colossians 1:16-17, Hebrews 1:1-2

God the Father created the universe through His Word, who is His Son.  So Jesus was the instrument of creation. Psalm 139:14

THE PROVISION OF THE WORD - Vss. 4-5

John 1:4 - In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Before Jesus came He had two qualities mentioned here that He has shared with man.  This is his provision for us.

·        LIFE

There are three aspects of life that Jesus gave to man.

1.     Physical Life – Because he is creator, He has given you and every other individual “life”.  If for no other reason, we should be indebted to Christ!

Eternal Life – Jesus came to earth with eternal life.  He came to live a perfect life and then to die in our places for our sins. John 3:14-18

2.     Abundant Life

John 10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Jesus not only came to give you eternal life, but He came to give you abundant life, right now.

Life before your conversion to Christ was marked with failure.

Life after your conversion to Christ should be marked with victory.

Because Christ has come we have abundant life in several ways. Here are four of them:

1.     Abundance of Christ’s presence  Matthew 28:20, John 15:4-5

Abundance of Christ’s peace John 14:27

2.     Abundance of Christ’s provision  Philippians 4:19

Abundance of Christ’s power Philippians 4:13, John 14:13-14

John 1:4 - In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

·        LIGHT

With His life comes His light.

Jesus is God. God is light. Psalm 104:1-2

1 John 1:5 - This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

This old world is entrenched in the darkness of sin.  Jesus came into the world to give it light, to point people to the God of light. John 8:12

John tells us in John 1:5 - And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

This is great news.

The light is in the world and the world can not comprehend it.  It does not understand the light.

The light is in the world and world can not overpower it, which is another meaning for the word “comprehend” in the Greek.

Since Jesus was born Satan and the world have tried to overtake or overpower His light. They can’t do it.

Light overpowers darkness.

Satan will never be able to overcome the Light.

We are on the winning team if we know Jesus as our Savior!

Ephesians 5:21-33

HEAVEN IN THE HOME

I begin this message by reading the marriage vows.

The couple that keeps their marriage vows will be the couple that will experience a great marriage. They know what it is like to experience Heaven in the home. One of the Scriptures which shows us how to keep our marriage vows is Ephesians 5:21-33. Here are four ingredients for a happy marriage.

LORDSHIP Vss. 21-23

Christians are to be submissive to each other. This is a quality that comes from being filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18-21)

As husbands and wives submit to the Lord, and then to each other, there will be harmony in the home. The husband is the leader of the family, but that does not make him a dictator. He must still submit himself to the needs and desires of his wife.  That will mean doing things around the house, doing things she likes to do, and purchasing things (when feasible) which she wants.  The wife needs to be submissive to the leadership of her husband.

LOVE Vs. 25 (Colossians 3:19)

The primary lover in the family is the husband.

Most Christian husbands who love their wives as Christ loved the church will not need to worry about having a submissive wife.

LEADERSHIP Vs. 23

The husband is the "head".

This makes him a leader.

The husband is responsible for the Spiritual well being of the home.

A good leader is not a dictator, but a thoughtful, considerate person.

A good leader makes the final decisions, but consults those he's leading before making decisions.

See Ephesians 6:4

LOYALTY Vss. 22 & 24

In order for husbands to be great leaders, they need great followers.

A loyal wife, who is loyal first to her Lord, and then to her husband, will enhance the husband's service for the Lord. Proverbs 31:10-12

FINISHING WELL

Hebrews 12:12-17

HEBREWS STUDY #27

·        Why do people leave jobs unfinished?

·        Why is it a poor testimony when Christians leave jobs unfinished?

·        Read the passage below and tell us what it says about finishing well.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 - Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. [25] And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. [26] I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: [27] But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

·        Tell us about someone you have seen finish their Christian life well.

After describing the Christian life as a race in Hebrews 12:1-4, we find the author again encouraging us to be faithful until we reach the “finish line”.

1. DETERMINATION – Vs. 12

ð    Hebrews 12:1-12 tells us that there is a race to be won and discipline to endure.  Therefore, we as Christians need to be determined to finish the race and to accept discipline graciously.

ð    What is discouraging about the race we call the Christian life?

ð    What is discouraging about discipline?

ð    What are drooping arms, flopping hands, and wobbly knees an indication of?

ð    What can we do to strengthen our drooping arms and hands?

ð    What can we do to strengthen our wobbly knees?

ð    What do we need from God more than anything else in order to obey this command?

Hebrews 12:28, 2 Corinthians 12:9, 1 Peter 5:10, 2 Peter 3:18

ð    How is finishing the race a team sport?

Isaiah 35:3-4 - Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. [4] Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

ð    How can we strengthen the weak hands and wobbly knees of others?

2. DIRECTION – Vss. 13-14

V     Vs. 13 - When we run in a race why do we need straight paths?  What happens when we get out of our running lanes?

Proverbs 4:25-27 - Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. [26] Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. [27] Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

V     The word “path” refers to a track made by a wagon or chariot wheel.  It is something someone else can follow.  Who are some of the people who will follow in our paths and how can we help?  1 Timothy 4:12

V     How do Christians cause other Christians to stumble?

V     How will a straight and level path help and even start to heal someone who is lame?

V     Vs. 14 – Christians have natural enemies. Who are they?

John 15:18-19 - If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. [19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

V     How can we follow peace with people who are opposed to us? Romans 12:18-21

V     Who sometimes become the Christians’ unnatural enemies?  Why does this grieve our Lord?  How can we follow peace with them?  John 13:34-25, Ephesians 4:32

V     Peace and holiness go together.

Matthew 5:8-9 - Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [9] Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

V     What is holiness?

V     How will holiness bring about peace?

V     How do I make peace and holiness a priority in my life?

3. DILIGENCE – Vss. 15-17

ü     Vs. 15 - How can a person fail or “fall short” of the grace of God?

ü     How can that hurt the body of Christ as a bitter root?

ü     How do bitter Christians hurt the cause of Christ?

ü     How can you tell if you are bitter?

ü     How can Christians heal bitterness?

ü     Vs. 16 – Why is sexual promiscuity something to avoid at all costs?

ü     Esau was an unholy or Godless person.  How did selling his birthright for a cheap meal indicate this?

ü     Is it possible to believe in God and be Godless?

ü     Vs. 7 - How was Esau rejected from inheriting the blessing?  Why could he not change things even though he wanted to?

Note: The concept of “finishing well” was found in the book, Preaching the Word, Hebrews Volume 2, An Anchor for the Soul by R. Kent Hughes (Wheaton Illinois, Crossway Books, 1993), pp. 177-185

The outline I used for this passage is mine.

Grace Living

A topical Sunday School Class or Bible Study

Grace, or God’s unmerited favor is necessary for more than Salvation.  We are saved by grace. Our whole lives must be lived by grace.  Here are the headings and Scriptures I recently used for a Sunday School glass on this subject.

SAVING GRACE

Romans 3:24 - Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

VISIBLE GRACE

Acts 11:23 - Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

COMMITTED GRACE

Acts 15:40 - And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

CONSTRUCTIVE GRACE

Acts 20:32 - And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

VICTORIOUS GRACE

Romans 5:17 - For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

2 Timothy 2:1 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

SERVING GRACE

1 Corinthians 15:10 - But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

Ephesians 4:7 - But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Romans 12:6-8 - Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; [7] Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; [8] Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

SUFFICIENT GRACE

2 Corinthians 12:9 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

James 4:5-6 - Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? [6] But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

VOCAL GRACE

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

AVAILABLE GRACE

Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. [15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

INCREASING GRACE

John 1:16-17 - And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:2 - Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

PERFECTED GRACE

1 Peter 5:10 - But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
