SPUNKY WOMAN

Genesis 24 etc.

Rebekah was a woman with spunk, tenacity, or courage.

In Genesis 24:1-9 Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac.

In Genesis 24:10-14 that servant is asking God to send a woman with spunk. This is exactly the type of woman he got for good and bad.

REBEKAH'S DETERMINATION  Genesis 24:14-26

Watering the camels was no easy task, but she stuck with it.

REBEKAH'S DECISION Genesis 24:35-53

She decided to go, and to go quickly to be Isaac's bride. She evidently

knew how to determine God's will for her life.

REBEKAH'S DISCERNMENT  Genesis 25:1-3

When Rebekah did not understand what was going on inside of her she

went to God and asked Him.

REBEKAH'S DEVOTION Genesis 25:24-28

There was unnecessary division in this family.

Favorites should never have been chosen, but at least Rebekah was

devoted  to the individual God had chosen.

REBEKAH'S DECEIT Genesis 27:1-16

If spunky people are not careful, they can become deceptive people.

Rebekah's deception resulted in Jacob running for his life, and never

     seeing his mother again.

Matthew 15:21-28

MAKING A GOOD THING BETTER

LIFE OF CHRIST #30

Faith is a good thing.

1.     It is required for eternal life. John 3:36

2.     It is required to please God. Hebrews 11:6

3.     It is required for our prayers to be answered. Mark 11:24

4.     It is required for living the Christian Life. Colossians 2:6

Faith is a good thing that can be made better.

Colossians 2:6-7 - As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: [7] Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

James 1:3-4 - Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

This week we meet a Gentile woman with a sick daughter.

Jesus takes a good thing, her faith, and makes it better.

This woman teaches us what to do for our faith to be strengthened when it is being tested.

Vs. 21 - It was rest time. It was a withdrawal for a short time, from the hostility of the Jewish leaders.  Jesus went into Gentile territory.  This is the region around two large cities on the Mediterranean Sea.  This was an area you might have heard referred to as Phoenicia. Today it is known as southern Lebanon. This was the first time in Jesus ministry in which he actually entered pagan territory.

Mark 7:24 - And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

Because it was rest time, the Lord Jesus did not want anyone to know that He was there. But notice that Jesus could not be hid. There were so many needs, so many people seeking Jesus, that humanly speaking, there was no hiding Him.

Vs. 22 – Now comes this woman of Canaan, a Gentile woman.  She has some faith, for she calls him “Son of David”. She recognizes that He is Israel’s Messiah, or King. She wants Jesus to heal her daughter who is grievously possessed by a demon.

Now, from this woman, we learn how to take a good thing, faith, and make it better.

BE ASKING

Vss. 22-23 – It is the man or woman of faith who asks God for things and expects an answer. This woman came to Jesus with her request.

He did not answer her. He was silent.

Why was Jesus silent?  He was probably silent because His ministry at the moment was centered on the Jewish Nation.

I feel there is another reason Jesus was silent.

I believe that Jesus was testing her faith, making it stronger. This challenged her to continue making her request known to the Lord.

Matthew 7:7-8 - Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

We are to be continually bringing our concerns to the Lord in prayer.

She was so persistent in her asking that the disciples wanted her sent away because she was bugging them. Like this woman, we should make our faith better by continually asking.

BE REVERENT – Vss. 24-25

Jesus answers the disciples, probably in hearing range of this woman, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Jesus was not in Israel at the time.

The woman asking for help was of a race that Israel was to have nothing to do with, the Canaanites.

Jesus certainly cared about the woman.

Jesus certainly cared about those who were not Jews.

However during Jesus’ earthly ministry he was sent to minister to his own people. When Jesus sent the disciples on preaching missions, He told them to go to the “lost sheep of the house of Israel”. (Matthew 10:6)

After Jesus died for the sins of the whole world and rose from the dead He sent the disciples to the whole world declaring the Gospel.

This woman still didn’t turn away.

She came to Him and worshipped Him!

This woman showed reverence to her Lord.

I personally think that all too often you and I get so wrapped up in our problems that we fail to worship God.

When we sing on Sunday Morning it is to be a time of worship. Psalm 100:1-2

When we come to God in prayer during the week, it should be a time of worship. Psalm 34:1

How can we say we trust Him as God, if we do not worship Him as God?

The more our faith is tested the more we should be drawn to worship Him who is our only Hope!

BE DESPERATE – Vs 25

Vs. 25 – Notice the poor, humble cry of this woman, “Lord, help me!”

She was desperate.

She had no other hope.

She had no alternate plan “B”.

She knew that if Jesus didn’t do it, it wouldn’t happen.

I don’t feel that you and I have learned to be desperate in our prayers.

It is the desperate person who will persist in prayers.

In Luke 11 Jesus tells a parable about the person who persisted to ask his neighbor for bread at midnight, because he was desperate to entertain visitors. If visitors were not entertained, it was a black mark against the person and his village. He was desperate, so he kept asking until the man got up and gave him what he needed. In Luke 11, Jesus went on to challenge his listeners to believing, persistent prayer.

The more desperate you are, the more you will rely on the Lord and Him only to solve your problem.

If you are desperate, you’ll keep before Him until He answers.

Let me add one word of caution. Please remember that all that we want is not all that the Lord wants. Sometimes the Lord will gently tell us “no” for some good reason. But until He does, let’s keep on asking.

BE HUMBLE – Vss. 26-27

Vs. 26 – Jesus tells this woman that you don’t take the children’s food off the table and give it to the household puppies.

Jesus is not calling the woman “a Gentile dog”, as the Jews often did.

He was just explaining that the food, His ministry, was intended for Israel, and was not yet to be taken away from them and given to the Gentiles.

Vs. 27 – Notice the woman’s humility here. She didn’t take offense. She agreed with the Lord!

You’re telling the truth, Lord, but even the puppies are allowed crumbs from off the table.

We used to have cats that loved table scraps.  They would get the crumbs, or things that fell on the floor.

The woman humbles herself to admit that she doesn’t deserve anything.  However, she wonders if the Lord could spare a few “crumbs” and answer her request.

Many would have been insulted, but not this woman. She knew her place.

Do we know ours?

Do we realize that we deserve no answers in prayer?

We have nothing and have done nothing to deserve God’s answers.

Do we realize that in the only way we can expect our prayers to be answered is when we come and pray in Jesus’ name? John 14:13-14

If we expect Jesus to do it and not ourselves, we are certainly humbling ourselves.

Yes we must do what He tells us to do, but we must depend on Him!

BE CONFIDENT – Vs. 28

“Oh woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt.”

This woman’s faith was a confident faith.

It had been tested, but now it was triumphant!

God took a good thing, and made it better!

BE COMFORTED!

Jesus told her that she had her wish.

And surely she did.

Her daughter was healed.

Can you imagine the woman’s relief?

My friend, it is those who have their faith tested, who persist in prayer, that see Jesus answer, and are comforted by His promises to answer.

Take a good thing, and make it better!

First, make sure you have faith in Jesus Christ. Then,

BE ASKING

BE REVERENT

BE DESPERATE

BE HUMBLE

BE CONFIDENT

BE COMFORTED.

Ephesians 1:1-2

RICH!

In their commentaries on Ephesians, both John MacArthur and Warren Wiersbe talk about Hetty Green, who was known for a long time as the "America's greatest miser." Worth over $100 million when she died, she would eat cold oatmeal to save heating costs.  Her son had a leg amputated because she spent so much time looking for a free clinic.  She died after an attack of apoplexy, which was brought on by an argument over the value of skim milk over whole milk. She was for skim milk because it was cheaper.

Hetty Green did not enjoy her riches!  The Book of Ephesians is the Bible Book that shows us our riches in Christ!  Christians need to study this book so they will discover their riches in Christ and how to use them.

We as Christians are often spiritual misers, because we don't use our riches in Christ.

Even the salutation in this book shows us our riches in Christ.

RICH IN STANDING (OR STATUS) - "Saints and faithful in Christ Jesus." -  A saint is a person who has been set apart for God.

The word "faithful" means believers. Saints become saints by being

believers in Christ.

RICH IN SERVICE  - "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God." - The Lord saved Paul with service for Him in mind (Acts 9:10-16).

God has saved each Christian with service in mind for Him. What a privilege!

RICH IN SUPPLY - "Grace...and peace..." - God supplies us with what we need in order to serve Him well. God gives us grace and peace at salvation, and continues to supply them as we walk with Him.

JAMES 4:11-17

FAITH WORKS RESPONSIBLY

FAITH WORKS #13

It is often necessary to have someone in charge.  In the family the job of being in charge has been given to the husband, to lovingly lead his family.  He is responsible to lead and his family is responsible to follow. Ephesians 5:22-25, Ephesians 6:4

At work there are bosses who are over you whose directions you are to follow. They are responsible and so are you. Colossians 3:22

In the church there will be people in charge.  Their leadership is to be followed. They are responsible and so are you. Hebrews 13:17

We return to our series in James entitled Faith Works.    This week we find that Faith Works Responsibly.

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD EVALUATE

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD PLAN

These are two areas in which we like to help God out.

We like to evaluate or judge people.

We like to make our own plans.

We want to help, or worse, take over for God in these areas, and God does not need our help.

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD EVALUATE

Vs. 11 – James warns against speaking evil against those who are to be our nearest and dearest companions, our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those who have been saved the same way you have, the ones who have the same Savior, the same heavenly Father, the same blessed hope.

It is the sin that is called “backbiting” elsewhere in the Word of God.

The words He that speaketh imply that the criticism and the judging are habitual. This is something which the person does on a continual basis.

The words speak evil hint that we become “the prosecutor” of our brother or sister. We are the district attorney bring the charges. The word judge means that we pass judgment, and this judgment is a judgment of condemnation.

Is James finding fault with Christians who seek to correct those of us who fail or sin?  No, not at all!

I thank God for those who have corrected me Biblically from time to time. Galatians 6:1

Is James finding fault with church discipline?  No!  There is a prescribed plan for church discipline that allows a person to repent privately before he is exposed publicly. Matthew 18:15-17

What James is condemning is the criticism of other Christians, the evaluation of their motives, and the quality of their work.

I think that James is condemning a malicious attitude that leads to a malicious tongue!

We have all done this!

We will say to someone else, “So and so shouldn’t have done that”, or “so and shouldn’t have said that”.

We will say to someone “And do you know why she did that or said that”?  And we will condemn what we feel is their motive.

Why is judging so wrong?

According to Verse 11, the person who speaks evil and judges is speaking evil of and judging God’s law.

What law is being evil spoken of and judged?

It is the royal law of love. James 2:8

James 2:12 mentions another law, the law of liberty.

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

This law of liberty makes me free to serve God and to live a righteous life before Him. If my brother in Christ has that same liberty, I must be careful not to bring my brother under my own rules and regulations. A lot of what we condemn in other Christians is not their sin, but the fact that they don’t act the way I act or think the way I think.

Notice the end of this verse. When I start to criticize I stop being a doer of the law, which is to love my neighbor as myself, and I start becoming a judge of the law, trying to place myself above God’s law.

Vs. 12 – There is only one law giver. That is God.

There, is therefore only one true judge. That is God.

Let’s let God do the judging.

He won’t miss a thing in you or me, or in anyone else.

If a brother or sister sins, pray for them.

If the Lord shows you to do so, go to that brother or sister and talk to him or her privately about the matter in a spirit of love. Otherwise remain silent!

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD EVALUATE

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD PLAN

We are being irresponsible when we judge others.

We are being irresponsible when we plan for ourselves without taking God into consideration.

Vs. 13 – God is not saying that we should make no plans at all.

In this verse James is talking about the person who makes plans apart from God.

He says, “I’M going to such and such a city, and I will be there for a year and I will buy and I will sell, and I will make a bundle.”

What God wants is not considered.

What God can do to alter these plans is not considered.

Vs. 16 – Notice what such a person is doing.

He is rejoicing in his own bragging.

He’s building himself up to be something.

Why is this unwise?

Vs. 14 – Your life is like a vapor that appears for a little while and then it is gone.

Have you ever watched a tea kettle boil?

When the kettle whistles, how long does the steam last?

It doesn’t last long. It comes out into the air and disappears.

Our life spans are like that vapor.

Our life span is so very brief in relation to time and eternity.

Even the longest of life spans, say a 110 years, is very, very short. Job 7:6, Psalm 39:4-5, Psalm 144:4

Vs. 14 – There is a truth here that we should never forget.

James 4:14 - Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.

Perhaps you have been saving the last part of your life as a time for God.  Don’t delay serving God while you can.

Christian, as you make your plans…

As you think about the future…

As you consider what you are doing now,

Don’t say:

I’ll study the Bible someday

I’ll witness someday.

I’ll learn to pray someday.

If your life is going to count for God, it has to start counting now!

If you feel the nudge of God, or just plain know what God wants you to do, just go ahead and do it. Ephesians 5:15-17

Vs. 15 – Our attitude in our plans should always be, “If the Lord will.”

We should make our plans asking God to guide us.

We should make our plans totally yielding them to God.

We should make our plans while studying God’s Word.

We should make our plans looking prayerfully at the circumstances.

We should make our plans realizing that God has every right to, and could, change them.

Does this mean that every time I make plans I need to add the words “Lord willing” to them?

Not necessarily. I can have the attitude of “Lord willing” without saying the words.

We have learned two truths this evening:

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD EVALUATE

WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO LET GOD PLAN

What should motivate you to watch what you say about people?

What should motivate you to allow God to guide your plans?

What should motivate you to do whatever else you know that you should do?

Vs. 17 – If you know what to do, and don’t do it, it is sin!

If you know what you should do, the best thing to do is to do it!

FRIEND OF GOD

ON OUR KNEES - LEARNING FROM MEN OF PRAYER – LESSON #3 – ABRAHAM

(A COMPLETE LESSON)

INTERACTION – In groups of 2-3

V     What qualities do you look for in a friend?

V     How has someone shown you true friendship in the last year?

V     How has God shown Himself to be a real friend in the last year?

V     What do you think God expects from you as His friend?

Isaiah 41:8 - But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend.

For Abraham to be called “The Friend of God” was a real compliment.  It is unbelievable that God would want our friendship, but he does.  Using the life of Abraham, and other Scriptures, let’s consider what friendship with God means.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS PERSONAL

Genesis 15:1-6

Genesis 18:1-15

Proverbs 27:9 - Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

Revelation 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS OPEN

Genesis 18:17 - And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

John 15:15 - Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

1 Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS DEPENDABLE

Genesis 18:18-19 - Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? [19] For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

Proverbs 17:17 - A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 18:24 - A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Proverbs 27:6 - Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Proverbs 27:10 - Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

John 15:13-14 - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [14] Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS INTERACTIVE

Genesis 18:22-33

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

John 15:7 - If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

John 15:16 - Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IS TRUSTWORTHY

Genesis 22:1-19
