FEELING ADEQUATE

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man Lesson #1

(These are my complete notes for a men’s study.

 

·       What are some areas in which men sometimes feel inadequate?

·       What do you think are some of the root causes for feelings of inadequacy?

·       When is it good to feel inadequate?

·       Why is feeling adequate in the ways listed below important?

1.     Feeling adequate as a husband

2.     Feeling adequate as a father

3.     Feeling adequate as a friend

4.     Feeling adequate as a Christian

5.     Feeling adequate as a church member

·       How do feelings of inadequacy go back to our younger days?

·       What events in the life of David would indicate that he had some healthy feelings of adequacy?

 

David was all man.  We might say that he was “A man’s man”.  And although David was by far not perfect, David had another quality that distinguished him.  David was God’s man.  He was chosen by God and he lived for God.

In this lesson we want to examine some qualities from David’s youth that helped build a feeling of adequacy within him.

1. DAVID WAS TENDER Vss. 1-12

 

·       King Saul had disqualified himself from being King.      

We must be careful not to disqualify ourselves from being useful to God.  1 Samuel 15:24-28

·       Vss. 1-5 – Samuel was sent to anoint a new king of God’s choosing from among the sons of Jesse.

·       Vss. 6-12 – Of Samuel’s 8 sons, only one passed the requirement God had for the next king. Verse 7 tells us that man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

     1 Samuel 13:14 - But now thy kingdom shall not

     continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own

     heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain

     over his people, because thou hast not kept that which

     the Lord commanded thee.

·       How would you describe being “a man after God’s own heart”?

·       2 Chronicles 16:9 (N.A.S.B.) - For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His...

·       What are some of the things we need to remove from our hearts in order that they may be “completely His”?

·       What are some of the positive attitudes found in a heart that is “completely His”?

·       There are at least two qualities found in the person whose heart belongs to God:

1. Salvation – 2 Corinthians 5:17

2. Consecration – Romans 12:1-2

·       Why does it take a real man to have a heart that’s tender towards God?

 

2. DAVID WAS TOUCHED Vs. 13

 

·       How did the presence of the Holy Spirit help David feel adequate?

·       How did the Holy Spirit help when David faced Goliath?

·       How is the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives superior to the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Old Testament?

·       John 14:16-18 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. [18] I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

·       Romans 8:9 - But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

·       What do we lack when we do allow the Holy Spirit to control us? Ephesians 5:18-21, Galatians 5:22-23,    Acts 1:8

3. DAVID HAD A TESTIMONY Vss. 14-19

 

·       Vss. 14-16 - Because Saul had a sin problem he was open to the attacks of Satan.  I imagine that Saul knew that he had a problem and was open to the suggestion that he get someone who could soothe his “frazzled nerves” with music.

·       Vss. 17-19 – One of Saul’s servants had met David. What were the positive qualities on David’s resume?

·       Someone is always watching us. Our current testimony can affect our future usefulness. How?

4. DAVID WAS TRAINED – Vss. 11-12, 20-23

 

·       Why did David need training?

·       Why do we need training? 1 Timothy 3:6, 10

      1 Timothy 3:6 - Not a novice, lest being lifted up with

      pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

      1 Timothy 3:10 - And let these also first be proved;

      then let them use the office of a deacon, being found

     blameless.

·       Why should men desire training in the things of God?

·       Vss. 11-12 – What training came with being the youngest of eight sons?

·       What training came from being a shepherd?

·       Vss. 20-23 – What vital training did David receive in Saul’s court?

·       We should be open to training even when we aren’t even sure why we need to be trained. Why?

 

This week consider what God requires for us to feel adequate for whatever He will call us to do.  Ask Him to:

 

·       Give you a tender heart.

·       Touch you.

·       Give you a good testimony.

·       Train you.

IT’S CRISIS TIME AGAIN

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 1 of 10 – COMPLETE NOTES – TAUGHT IN SUNDAY SCHOOL

 

ë    Please share some of your personal experiences with some of the different types of crises listed below.  Briefly tell about the crisis, how it was handled, and what you learned.

 

·        A Mid-life or Other Type of Humorous Crisis

·        A Family Crisis

·        A Personal Crisis

·        A Church Crisis

 

ë    What are some of the various ways people react to crisis?

ë    What do we learn about other people and about ourselves in times of crisis?

ë    Name some Bible Characters who had crises and how they were solved.

WHY CRISES?

 

1.     BECAUSE OF SIN

R    When Adam and Eve sinned, it stopped being a perfect world. Genesis 3:16-19

R    Starting with Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel, man caused his own crises.

 

2.     BECAUSE OF SATAN

R    Satan lives in rebellion to God. Isaiah 14:10-14

R    Satan influences man to sin.

R    Satan causes trouble for man. Job 1-2, 1 Peter 5:8

 

3.     BECAUSE OF SCHOOL

R    James 1:2-4 - My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

R    2 Corinthians 12:9 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

 

4.     BECAUSE OF SUCCESS

R    James 1:12 - Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

R    Revelation 2:10 - Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

R    1 Corinthians 15:10 - But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

CRISIS IS:

 

1.     A TIME FOR DEPENDENCE

O    Psalm 55:22 - Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

O    Isaiah 41:10 - Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

O    Nehemiah depended upon God in his times of crisis.

 

2.     A TIME FOR GUIDANCE

O    Exodus 33:14 - And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

O    Psalm 32:8 - I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

O    It is obvious that Nehemiah was guided by God in times of crisis.

 

3.     A TIME FOR EXCELLENCE

a.      Of Work

O    Colossians 3:17 - And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

O    Colossians 3:23 - And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

O    Nehemiah and his associates had an excellent work ethic.

O    What is the significance of an excellent work ethic in a time of crisis?

 

b.     Of Character

O    1 Peter 1:15-16 - But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

 

4.     A TIME FOR (GOD’S) BENEVOLENCE

 

©     Romans 8:35-39 - Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? [36] As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. [37] Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. [38] For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

©     The wall around Jerusalem was constructed in 52 days without any mention of loss of life.

 

Crises are with us until we get to Heaven.  Although there are many sorrows related to crises, there can also be many joys and victories.  The more crises we face the stronger in the Lord we are to become.  The Book of Nehemiah is an excellent textbook for helping us through the crises that we will face.

TWO PEAS IN A POD

LIFE OF CHRIST #44

 

There is an expression “like as two peas in a pod” or “They’re two peas in a pod.”  What does the term mean?

According to Answers.com the phrase means, “Very similar, bearing a close resemblance. For example, they’re not even sisters, but they're like as two peas in a pod. This expression alludes to the seeds contained in a pea pod, which do indeed look very much alike.” http://www.answers.com/topic/like-as-two-peas-in-a-pod

 

Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem to fulfill his destiny, but he still had time for the needs of two peas in a pod. Now, when you first observe Bartimaeus and Zacchaeus you might think that they have very little in common.

 

Bartimaeus was a blind man.  He had no fixed means of income. He was a beggar. His name is given to us in Mark.

 

Zacchaeus was a very wealthy man, probably one of the wealthiest men in Jericho. He was the head tax collector for the Roman government in the Jericho area, a principle area for collecting taxes. All the tax collectors paid Zacchaeus, who in turn paid the Roman government.

 

THEY BOTH HAD FRUSTRATIONS

 

18:35 – It is not hard to comprehend or understand Bartimaeus’ frustrations.

 

·       HE WAS BLIND

He was probably blind from birth.

He had never seen a sunrise. 

He had never seen another person.

He had never seen the beauties of nature.

He had never seen where he was going.

He was dependent on the eyes of others, who could tell him what was going on. 

 

18:36-37 – The only reason Bart knew about Jesus was because he heard the commotion, asked what was going on, and someone told Him.

 

·       HE WAS BROKE

Bart was a beggar.

Some of us can remember or have recently experienced times when money was tight.  When we were living in our last church, our children thought that we were poor. But none of us are as poor as the beggars were in the days of Jesus.  It is likely that he was often hungry and had scanty clothes.  It is possible that he may have even been homeless.

 

Bartimaeus had his frustrations, but so did Zacchaeus.

Although Zacchaeus was a rich man, he would have been an outcast among the Jews. 

He would have only been acceptable to other tax collectors or those whose occupations were shady.

 

The Jews would have considered him to be a traitor because he was working for the Roman government, and tax collectors were known for charging more taxes than they had to pay to Rome. He was probably not welcome in the local synagogue. He was a hated man. Because he was the head tax collector, he would have been considered the head traitor.

 

Although Zacchaeus was rich, it does not mean that he was happy.  Money just can’t buy happiness.

 

He had another problem, he was short of stature. Most Jews were short, but he was short by their standards. He probably grew up being teased about his height, and when Jesus passed by, he couldn’t see Jesus because of the crowd in front of him.

 

Both Zach and Bart had their frustrations, for sure.

But they both had another frustration.

It is more obvious in Zach, because he probably did get his position by being entirely honest.

 

Both men at some point in their lives suffered under the burden of sin.  Although we have no hint at Bart’s sins, we know that he had them.

 

As someone has said, we usually feel guilty because we are. The Bible is very clear that we are all guilty sinners. Isaiah 64:6, Ephesians 2:1-3

 

You know, we are like Bartimaeus and Zacchaeus.  We are another “pea in the pod”.  We have our frustrations. We all have had to struggle with the guilt of sin.

 

THEY BOTH HAD FRUSTRATIONS

THEY BOTH EXERCISED FAITH

   

18:38 – When Bart was told that it was Jesus passing by, he began to yell to “Jesus, the son of David”.  This was a messianic term. It indicates that Bartimaeus had his faith in Jesus as the Messiah. 

We would say today, that he was a believer. 

Based on what he had been told about the actions and teachings of the Lord Jesus, he had placed his faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16

 

18:39 – Bartimaeus’ faith went further than believing on Jesus as His Messiah.  He was continually crying out, even though he was told to be quiet. He was uttering a prayer!

 

Vss. 40-41 – Jesus heard Bartimaeus. Jesus hears the prayers of His saints as well. John 14:13-14

 

Jesus asked Bartimaeus, “What do you want?”

 

Do you ever stop to think of Jesus asking you, “What do you want, Bob, Fran, Dave, Jackie?”

Jesus encourages us to keep on asking like Bartimaeus did.

And Jesus encourages us to ask for specific things in persistent, believing prayer. Matthew 7:7-11, John 5:14-15

 

Bartimaeus showed his faith. So did Zacchaeus. They were two peas in a pod.

 

19:3-4 – Zacchaeus sought after Jesus.  He had hunger in his soul, and some sort of faith that Jesus was the answer to His problems. 

 

It is possible that Zach heard about another tax collector who now followed Jesus, Matthew.

 

When Zacchaeus couldn’t get close to Jesus because of the crowd, he threw all dignity and caution to the wind and ran ahead and climbed a tree.  It was a sycamore tree, a tree with a short stump, but wide branches and easy to climb. The leaves in the tree would have hid him at least somewhat.

 

19:5-6 – Jesus stopped beneath the tree, saw Zacchaeus and summoned him down.  Zacchaeus didn’t know that He had a divine appointment with Jesus, but Jesus did!

 

Jesus saw a man ready to be saved, ready to trust Him.

 

19:7 – While the crowd complained, Jesus talked to Zacchaeus.  We don’t know what was said but we see the result.  Zacchaeus’ faith was not in his money but in Jesus.

He became a believer in Christ.  The proof of his salvation is shown in his announcement.

 

19:8 – To start, half of his wealth would be given to the poor. And then out of the remaining 50% Zacchaeus would pay restitution to anyone that he cheated.  That was the maximum payment required by Jewish law.  Considering Zach’s business, he had probably cheated lots of people.

 

Zacchaeus was showing that money was not important any more. He found a changed life in Jesus. How has your life changed since you put your faith in Jesus?

 

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, [10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. [11] And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

 

Do you remember the rich young ruler?  Because money was his God Jesus told him to sell it all, give to the poor and follow Him.  He didn’t do it.   

 

Zacchaeus, on the other hand, basically did what the rich young ruler didn’t. He gave the riches up for Christ!

 

THEY BOTH RECEIVED FAVOR

 

18:40-42 – Bartimaeus received his sight.

Bartimaeus was also saved because of His faith in Christ

 

When we trust Christ as Savior we will have eternal life. Acts 16:31

 

When we pray as Christians in faith believing we will have our prayers answered. Mark 11:24  

 

Salvation also came to Zacchaeus.   

 

19:9 – Why was Zacchaeus saved? Was it because he gave away a fortune? No! The giving away of the fortune was the evidence of his salvation!

 

Zacchaeus was saved because he showed himself to be a Son of Abraham.  Abraham was the father of faith.  Those who place their faith in Christ are children of Abraham. Galatians 3:9, 13-14

 

God exercises favor to those who trust His Son.

 

Bart and Zach were “two peas in a pod”:

 

THEY BOTH HAD FRUSTRATIONS

THEY BOTH EXERCISED FAITH

THEY BOTH RECEIVED FAVOR

WHAT A CHANGE!

 

There is a dramatic change in our lives when we come to know Christ as Savior.

 

WE ARE CONSTRAINED BY CHRIST'S LOVE Vs. 14

WE ARE CONVERTED TO NEW LIFE Vss. 17-18

Philippians 2:5-11

A GOOD ATTITUDE

 

Begin your message with some examples of those who had good attitudes.  Then, remind people that the person with the best attitude was the Son of God. Paul admonishes us all to have the "mind" or attitude of Christ in Philippians 2:5-11. A good attitude involves:

 

SURRENDER Vss. 6-7a

Our Lord surrendered his rights in order to save us.

He left the glory of heaven (2 Corinthians 8:9).

He voluntarily limited the use of his Godly attributes.

 

SERVICE Vs. 7b

He took on the form of a servant.  He came to earth to serve God, and us, by dying for our sins.

 

SUBMISSION Vs. 8

"...he humbled himself..."

 

SACRIFICE Vs. 8

"...and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

 

SATISFACTION Vss 9-11

As a result of Jesus' actions on earth, God has highly exalted Him, and will continue to exalt Him.  As we have the same mind as Christ, there will be rewards for us when we appear before Him in judgment. See 1 Corinthians 4:5 and 2 Corinthians 5:10.

1 Corinthians 1:2 - Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

SIMPLICITY IN CHRIST

2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

 

UNITY IN CHRIST

Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

 

BLESSINGS IN CHRIST

Ephesians 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

 

PURPOSE IN CHRIST

Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

 

JOY IN CHRIST   

Philippians 3:3 - For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

 

FAITH IN CHRIST

Colossians 1:3-4 - We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, [4] Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
