1 Samuel 17

LESSONS FROM A GIANT KILLER

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man         Lesson #2

(A COMPLETE LESSON)

·       Think of a giant as anything that bullies or controls a person, family, or church.

·       What are some of the giants that Christian men face?

·       What are some giants that families face?

·       What are some giants that churches face?

·       How do giants intimidate us?

·       Why do giants intimidate us?

·       What does Satan not want us to know about giants?

We have before us the classic story of David and Goliath.  David turned out to be a “giant killer”.  As we face giants in our personal lives, families, and church, we can learn some lessons from David’s experience with Goliath that will help us conquer the giants that we face.

INTRODUCTION – Vss. 1-11

·       Vss. 1-3 – Picture a valley or canyon about a mile wide with a riverbed running through it. Also picture one army camped on one side of the valley and the other army on the other side.

·       Vss. 4-7 – Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. He was over 9 feet tall. His armor was not only extensive, but heavy. His coat of mail weighed in between 175-200 pounds.  The head of his spear weighed between 25-30 pounds.

·       Vss. 8-10 - Imagine Goliath going into the ravine and issuing a challenge for a “sudden death” match.

·       Vs. 11 – How was Saul’s and Israel’s reaction typical, but wrong?

BE COOPERATIVE – Vss. 12-22

Ø     SUBMIT TO AUTHORITY

·       David had been anointed by Samuel as the next king of Israel.  Since then he had split time soothing Saul’s nerves with his harp, working as his armor bearer, and tending his father’s sheep.  He did not flaunt his future position, nor did he seek any recognition. He simply did what he was told.

·       David did not look for giants to conquer. He was too busy being obedient.  He tended his father’s sheep and only went to the battlefield when his father sent him with supplies and to get a report on the battle.

·       How is a submissive attitude to authority good training for fighting giants?

Ephesians 5:21 - Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

James 4:7 - Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

BE CONCERNED – Vss. 23-27

Ø     BE BURDENED FOR GOD’S GLORY

·       Notice in verse 16 that Goliath had continued his intimidation tactics.

·       Vss. 24-25 - He had even become bolder. At first he stayed in the ravine and then started to actually come up towards the camp, so that the soldiers ran.

·       How do our giants become bolder if we don’t deal with them?

·       Vss. 26-27 – How was David’s perspective different from the army’s perspective?

·       How will a burden for God’s glory help us deal with giants?

BE COOL – Vss. 28-30

Ø     DON’T LET CRITICISM UPSET YOU

·       Why do you think Eliab got so angry at David?

·       How could David have reacted to Eliab instead of giving a quiet response?

·       Why do we need to choose our battles carefully?

BE COMMITTED – Vss. 31-33

Ø     DECIDE TO FACE THE GIANT

·       What prompted David to say he would fight the giant?

·       Why should we decide to do battle with the giants that harass us?

·       What made Saul less than supportive?

BE CONFIDENT – Vss. 34-37

Ø     TRUST GOD FOR THE VICTORY

·       Why do we reflect more on our failures than our successes?

·       Why should we often reflect on the victories that God has given us in the past?

·       According to verse 37, what was the secret to David’s confidence?

Psalm 62:8 - Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

·       Why did Saul concede to David’s fighting the giant?

BE CREATIVE – Vss. 38-40

Ø     USE YOUR OWN GOD-GIVEN GIFTS AND ABILITIES

·       Why was Saul’s armor not suitable for David?

·       How will we discover the best tactics for fighting our giants?  Why do tactics vary?

·       Why do we need to realistically understand our strengths and weaknesses?

BE CONFRONTATIONAL – Vss. 42-50

Ø     HANDLE THE GIANT FOR GOD’S GLORY

·       Vs. 45 – Why should we confront our giants in the name of the Lord Jesus?

·       How should we confront our giants in the name of the Lord Jesus?  See Matthew 4:1-10, 1 Corinthians 10:12-14, Romans 6:11-14, Romans 8:1-4, 1 Peter 5:8-9

·       How is fleeing temptation the same as resisting it?

·       Vs. 46 – What was David’s ultimate purpose in fighting this giant?

·       What similar purpose should we have, and why?

·       What made David such a good shot?

BE COMPLETE – Vs. 51

Ø     MAKE SURE THE JOB IS DONE

·       We should not allow even a little toe-hold for our giants in our lives, families or churches. Why?

DO I CARE?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 2 – Nehemiah 1

(A COMPLETE LESSON)

Ö       What are the biggest crises in the world today?

Ö       What are some things that Christians tend to care less about over time if they are not careful?

Ö       Name a Christian who God used to change an area of the world because that Christian cared?

In Nehemiah 1, we meet Nehemiah, a man who faced many crises in his service to God.  In this chapter we find that the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem began with the burden of just one man.  With all the sin, degradation, and crises all around us, we need to ask ourselves, “Do I care?” “Am I burdened enough to pour out my heart before God and take steps to be used in a time of crisis?”

AM I PERTURBED? – Vss. 1-4

º     Nehemiah was in the employ of the King of Persia.  Israel had been carried into captivity by King Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon.  Babylon had been conquered by Persia.  After 70 years of captivity, some Jews were allowed to return and eventually rebuild the temple.  The King that Nehemiah served under was probably Artaxerxes.  Ezra the Scribe had led a contingent back to Jerusalem in the king’s 7th year.  It is now his 20th year.

º     Nehemiah received a report from his brother concerning the conditions in Jerusalem.

º     What was the significance of the walls being down?

º     Where, figuratively speaking, do you see the walls down today?

º     Is there a crisis every time the walls are down? Why?

º     The biggest crisis is when the walls are down in _______________. Proverbs 25:28

º     How did Nehemiah show that he was perturbed by the news that he received?

º     How will we know when we are properly perturbed about broken down walls?

º     What are some of the things that make us lose or not have a concern for broken walls?

º     What do you think is the bottom line reason that we should be concerned for broken down walls?

AM I PRAYERFUL? – Vss. 4-5

V     What are some of the commands to pray and prayer promises that we have at our disposal?

V     If we have so many commands to pray and promises of answered prayer, why do we fail to be effective in our prayer lives?

V     What made Nehemiah effective?

AM I PENITENT? – Vs. 5-7

w       Vs. 5 – When Nehemiah prayed, what did he do first? Why is that significant?

w       How frequent were Nehemiah’s prayers?  What did Jesus teach on the same subject? Luke 11:5-13, 18:1-8

w       Vss. 6-7 – Why should we confess more than just our own sins?

w       What will happen if we do not deal with our sins? Psalm 66:18, Proverbs 28:9, 1 Corinthians 11:27-32, 1 Peter 3:7

w       Remember that our hearts must be right with God before we can help rebuild the walls and before we will truly have a burden for the walls to be built!

AM I PROMISED? – Vs. 8-9

J    Why are the childish words, “But you promised!” effective words in prayer?

J    In claiming God’s promises, Nehemiah was summarizing what God had said in such passages as Deuteronomy 4:25-31, 30:1-5, Leviticus 26:27-45 and 2 Chronicles 6:36-39.

J    In times of crisis why does time in the Word of God take on even more significance?

J    How can 1 John 5:14-15 expand our prayer lives in times of crisis?

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to

his  will, he heareth us: [15] And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we

know that  we have the petitions that we desired of him.

AM I PROACTIVE? – Vs. 10-11

v    Vs. 10 - Notice who Nehemiah was concerned for.  How should our concern for our brothers and sisters affect our willingness to be involved in times of crisis?

v    What three qualities mentioned in verse 10 should distinguish us as Christians?

v    What lesson does Nehemiah teach us about availability?

v    How did Nehemiah know what he should do?

WE WOULD SEE JESUS

Luke 9:28-36

INTRODUCTION: People come to church for different reasons.

·        Someone makes you come. Some come out of habit.

·        Some come to hear a sermon. Some come to see their friends.

·        Some come to learn. Some come for the music.

·        Some come to make someone happy.

While some of these reasons for church attendance have some validity, one of the best reasons for coming to church is stated in John 12:21 - "WE WOULD SEE JESUS."

I invite you to see Jesus during this service.

SEE HIS IDENTITY  Vss. 28-29

SEE HIS DESTINY Vss, 30-31

John 12:1-8

GUESS WHO CAME TO DINNER? AM 10/8/06

LIFE OF CHRIST #45

Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem for the last time, and stopped first in Bethany, about six miles away, to visit his dear friends, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.  It was here that there was a memorable dinner party where a wonderful act of devotion took place.

There is much to learn from the people named by name in this story. Hopefully we can glean some lessons from those involved in this dinner party.

THERE WAS MARTHA WHO SERVED - SHE WAS FAITHFUL – Vs. 2

This is the same Martha who served a dinner back in Luke 10.  It was not her home this time, but she still was involved in the making and serving of the meal. I imagine that she was in charge.

I said that this was the same Martha, but in a real sense it wasn’t. Luke 10:38-42

The Martha in Luke 10 was frustrated and overwhelmed. Obviously this Martha was not.

The Martha in Luke 10 was upset with Mary and Jesus.

I believe this time Martha was allowing her love for Jesus to motivate her service, and may have even put her approval on the act of devotion that Mary was about to do.

Martha still served, but obviously Martha was serving with a different attitude.  She was serving out of love for the Lord Jesus and appreciation for what Jesus had done to resurrect her brother from the dead.

She evidently had taken Jesus’ words of rebuke to heart, and had learned to “sit at Jesus feet and hear His word” before she got on her feet and served her master.

Martha is a great example of faithful service.  And when Martha learned that devotion came first and service second, I believe she became a very effective servant.

Ephesians 2:10, Romans 12:11, and Galatians 5:13 encourage us to serve.

We serve best when we serve out of love and devotion for the Lord Jesus.  It does not matter what others say and think. We are doing it for Him because we love Him!

·       THERE WAS LAZARUS, WHO SAT - HE HAD FELLOWSHIP - Vs. 2

Lazarus was a guest at the meal.  He was there to have fellowship with Jesus.

To have fellowship with Jesus is to spend time with Him.

That time is spent in worship, in His Word, and in prayer.

To have fellowship with Jesus is to abide in Him. John 15:7, Revelation 3:20

For Lazarus to have fellowship with Jesus he had to stop whatever else he was doing and sit in His presence. Although we can fellowship with Jesus as we do other things, the best fellowship is when we set aside everything else to spend time with the Lord Jesus.

·       THERE WAS MARY WHO SHARED - SHE WAS FERVENT (IN HER DEVOTION) - Vs. 3

Vs. 3 – Mary had a very expensive container of perfume.

It was pure nard, perhaps imported from India.

Perhaps she had been saving it for her wedding day. Perhaps she went out and bought it for this occasion.

Comparing the Gospel accounts Mary poured this perfume on Jesus’ head and feet, and probably over His whole body.

Then she did something unimaginable for the culture of that day, she unloosed her hair in public and dried Jesus’ feet.

It was an active of supreme devotion.

This perfume was so expensive that Judas claimed that it was worth about 300 pence or 300 days wages for a common laborer. It took a year’s salary, so to speak, to buy this perfume.

Mary shared the best that she had with the Lord Jesus.  She was passionate in her devotion to Him.

When we are passionate in our love for Christ nothing is too good for Him.

Why did Mary do what she did?

Yes, because she loved Him. But Mary was also listening and Mary understood.

John 12:7 - Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

Mark 14:8 - She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

Jesus had been telling the disciples all along that He was going to Jerusalem to be crucified, to be buried and to rise again.  The disciples were not getting it. They weren’t listening closely. But Mary was, and she understood.

It was customary to anoint a body for burial.  But Mary understood that a crucified body might not get the traditional treatment from loved ones. So Mary expressed her love for Jesus while she could.

This is a great lesson for us.

Express your love for others while you can!  Make sure others know how you feel while you have the opportunity to do so.

Most important of all is that you express your love for Jesus while you can!

Please note that verse 3 says …and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Mary gave her best to Jesus and it smelled wonderful all around her.  And wherever Mary went in that house her hair, with which she dried the perfume, carried the sweet fragrance.

Whenever you sacrifice your best for the Lord Jesus Christ as Mary did, your life will smell good!  It will have a sweet-smelling affect on everyone around you.

·       THERE WAS JUDAS, WHO STOLE - HE WAS A FAKE - Vss. 4-6

You can count on this - when you give your best to the Lord Jesus, someone will not like it. Judas didn’t like what Mary did.

Vss. 4-5 – Evidently Judas started to criticize and he influenced the other disciples. Matthew 26:8-9

Vs. 6 – Judas sounded very pious.  But Judas was a fake, a phony!  He was the treasurer and he was a thief.  He was a hypocrite.  He didn’t care about the poor.

God hates hypocrisy more than you do! Job 27:8, Romans 12:9, Romans 2:22

·       THERE WAS JESUS WHO SAVED - HE IS FANTASTIC! - Vss. 7-8

Jesus was the guest of honor at this dinner.

Jesus was also in charge at this dinner.

Jesus silenced the criticisms of Mary.

Mary understood. Mary knew that Jesus was going to die and that there would always be poor people to help.

But Mary knew that Jesus’ time was limited.

Mary knew what Jesus was about to do.

She was to be honored, not criticized.

Matthew 26:12-13 - For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. [13] Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

I believe Mary understood something else.

She understood that Jesus was offering a sacrificial death for the sins of the world.  She had been listening.

Mary understood that Jesus is fantastic!

His burial would follow His fantastic payment for our sins.

His death, His being lifted up on the cross opened the door for all to have forgiveness and eternal life.     John 3:14-15, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Today, Jesus who died for your sins will forgive you and wash away your sins if you but put your trust in Him.

So here we have it.  There are lessons from five people who came to dinner.  Will you apply their lessons to your life?

·       THERE WAS MARTHA, WHO SERVED - SHE WAS FAITHFUL – Vs. 2

·       THERE WAS LAZARUS, WHO SAT - HE HAD FELLOWSHIP - Vs. 2

·       THERE WAS MARY WHO SHARED - SHE WAS FERVENT (IN HER DEVOTION) - Vs. 3

·       THERE WAS JUDAS, WHO STOLE - HE WAS A FAKE - Vss. 4-6

·       THERE WAS JESUS WHO SAVED - HE IS FANTASTIC! - Vss. 7-8

WATCH

A TOPICAL MESSAGE

GREAT BIBLE WORDS #1

A DEPENDENT WATCH

Psalm 130:5-6 - I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. [6] My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

A PATIENT WATCH

Habakkuk 2:1 - I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.

AN ALERT WATCH

Matthew 24:42 - Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Matthew 25:13 - Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Mark 13:32-37 - But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. [33] Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. [34] For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. [35] Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: [36] Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. [37] And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

1 Corinthians 16:13 - Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

1 Thessalonians 5:5-6 - Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. [6] Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

A PREVENTIVE WATCH

Matthew 26:40-41 - And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? [41] Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Revelation 3:2-3 - Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. [3] Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

A REFLECTIVE WATCH

Acts 20:29-31 - For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. [30] Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. [31] Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

A PRAYERFUL WATCH

Colossians 4:2 - Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

1 Peter 4:7 - But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

A SUPERVISORY WATCH

Hebrews 13:17 - Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
