ISAIAH 53

THE STORY OF THE CROSS – GOOD FRIDAY

For the complete notes on this sermon, please email me and ask. jpeters@alltel.net

IF YOU RECEIVE MOUNT UNION ECHOES, YOU ALREADY RECEIVED THESE NOTES THIS WEEK!

I want us to go back to the Old Testament and reflect on the prophecy of Isaiah 53, which tells the story of Jesus' atonement for our sins long before it happened. We will consider the Story of the Cross.

THE SIMPLICITY OF THE CROSS - Vs. 2

Vss. 1-2 - A tender plant is a shoot. Just a little wee thing.

Jesus came simply. He was God, but was born to the

home of a humble carpenter through the Virgin

               Mary.

He was of the Kingly line of David, but did not have the benefits of living in a King's house.

He was as a root coming out of a dry ground.

Think of Israel at that the time.  The once proud nation was now a desert politically and spiritually.

Israel this time was under Roman domination.  Israel really did not control its own affairs. Rome ruled, and what Rome said was the law that superseded all other laws.  Their political system was a desert.

Israel at this time was also a desert spiritually. They worshipped in the temple, but many were entwined in a liberalism that didn't believe in the resurrection or in a conservatism that led to legalism.

Not only did the Israel have God's law, but it added many man-made writings that interpreted the law.  They took their man-made ideas and in many ways placed them on equal footing with God's Word.

It says here that Jesus had no form nor comeliness. That doesn't mean Jesus was ugly.  Although as the perfect man, I believe Jesus was good looking, but I don't feel that he looked much different than any other Jewish man.  Contrary to some of the classic art works, Jesus did not walk around with a glow or halo on His head.  He simply looked the part of a humble servant.

There is another way that Jesus had no form nor comeliness.

It goes along with the last phrase in Vs. 2 - and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

When he was on the cross, suffering for our sins, there was no beauty to be found in what people could see. Isaiah 52:14

The birth and life of Jesus were in many ways simple.

His appearance on the cross was also simple.

THE SHAME OF THE CROSS - Vs. 3

Why did Jesus go to the cross?

Yes, to die for our sins.

But Jesus was nailed to a cross, because He was despised by the very people he came to save, especially their leadership.

Going along with Jesus being despised, He was also rejected. John 1:11

We are told here that Jesus was a man of sorrows and aquatinted with grief.   Jesus took upon his shoulders the sins of the world. In order to die for sin he had to bear the sin.

…and we hid as it were, our faces from him.

The very people he came to save hid their faces from Jesus.

That's a shame! And yet today, people who Jesus came to save our still turning their backs on Him by failing to believe in him as their Savior.

It says, he was despised and we esteemed him not. Luke 23:35-37, Luke 23:39

THE SACRIFICE OF THE CROSS - Vss. 4-6

Vs. 4 - The Jews thought of Jesus as being judged by God, that is, stricken and smitten by God.

But that is not what was truly happening.

What was really happening was that Jesus was bearing on the cross the griefs and sorrows caused by our sin. The words griefs and sorrows mean pain and sickness.  He was taking the pain and sickness of our sins upon His own shoulders. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Vs. 5 - Jesus was wounded and bruised for our transgressions and iniquities.

Jesus was chastised so we could have peace with God.

Somebody had to appease God for our sins.

This is what Jesus did. Romans 5:9, 5:1

Vs. 6 - Like sheep every one of us have gone astray. Romans 3:23

Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Everyone one of us has done our own sinful thing and gone our own sinful way.

In love God laid our sins on to His Son. It is with His stripes, His beatings, His wounds that we are healed.

THE SILENCE OF THE CROSS - Vss. 7-9

I see two kinds of silence here.

·        Silence of Words - Vs. 7

When Jesus was asked concerning his identity, He answered.

When Jesus was falsely accused, mocked, and beaten, he remained silent.

He took it quietly.

It is often hard for us to take abuse quietly.

Jesus took the most abuse of all, and took it quietly.

·        Silence of Death - Vss. 8-9

Jesus was cut off from the land of the living. His voice was now silent.

God allowed Jesus to be buried in a rich man's tomb.

He had earned it.

THE SATISFACTION OF THE CROSS - Vss. 10-12

There is not just sorrow in Isaiah 53.

Isaiah 53 ends on a high note.

For all the grief found in Isaiah 53, there is much satisfaction.

I see satisfaction here in three ways:

·        Satisfaction of Resurrection - Vs. 10

God was certainly satisfied with the work of Jesus on the cross.

Notice, that because God was satisfied, "he shall prolong his days."

Jesus' Days were prolonged by His resurrection from the dead. Revelation 1:18

Also notice it says that Jesus shall see his seed.

That would be his descendents.

Jesus had no physical descendents.

But Jesus has plenty of descendents.

Every person who places their faith and trust in Christ is a descendant of Jesus who has the same hope of eternal life. John 14:1-3, 19

And the neat thing is that there is still room for more descendents. Revelation 22:17 says, And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Notice also in verse 10 that the pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

I am sure that there are many ways to interpret this phrase, but I want to suggest one specific idea.

Where is Jesus right now?

He's in Heaven sitting at the right hand of God.

He is prospering at the right hand of God. Romans 8:34, Psalm 110:1

·        Satisfaction of Justification - Vs. 11

Vs. 11 - May I remind you again of Romans 5:1- Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Because of what Jesus did on the cross, whoever has placed their faith in Christ has eternal life.

Jesus has justified millions of people, including most, if not all in this room.

Jesus has every reason to be satisfied with the wonderful redemption He has wrought for so many.

·        Satisfaction of Glory - Vs. 12, Philippians 2:9-11

Jesus has a portion with the great.

He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Mark 11:3

NEEDED!

…the Lord hath need of him…

God is self sufficient and has need of nothing.  However, just like Jesus needed the colt to fulfill the prophecies about Palm Sunday, God has chosen to need us.

GOD NEEDS US TO FORGIVE US

2 Corinthians 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Ephesians 1:7 - In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

GOD NEEDS US TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH US

Matthew 28:20 - Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Romans 8:15 - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

GOD NEEDS US TO BE FAITHFUL TO HIM

1 Corinthians 4:1-2 - Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. [2] Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

GOD NEEDS US FOREVER

Revelation 22:1-5 - And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. [2] In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. [3] And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: [4] And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. [5] And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Luke 19:28-40

WELCOME THE KING

Down through the years people have gone out of their way to welcome those whom they have deemed important.

World championship teams have been welcomed back to the home city with greeters at airports, parades, and rallies in their honor.

Dignitaries and celebrities have been welcomed with ticker tape parades, and have been given "keys to the city".

Royalty has been welcomed with red carpets, official banquets, special tours and great gifts.

Even in our homes, when someone special is coming we make a very special effort to make the person feel welcome.

About 2,000 years ago on what we know as "Palm Sunday",  The city of Jerusalem had a very special visitor.  He had been in the city many times before, but this time He presented Himself in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9.  Not everyone welcome the Lord Jesus with enthusiasm (Luke 19:42-44), but there are those who did.

Jesus, the Messiah, the King of Kings, was made to feel welcome, especially by his disciples. The ways they made Him feel welcome are the same ways true Christians should make Him feel welcome today.

WELCOME THE KING WITH FAITH - Vss. 37-38

The chant of "Blessed be the king that cometh in the name of the Lord..." was begun by those who truly trusted Him, His disciples.

True believers have trusted Christ as Savior by faith. John 3:16-18, Hebrews 11:6

WELCOME THE KING WITH OBEDIENCE - Vss. 29-35

The disciples did as they were told. John 14:15

WELCOME THE KING WITH GIFTS - Vss. 32-36

Jesus received the gift of the loan of a colt.

The disciples gave the gift of their time. Ephesians 5:16

The disciples gave of their resources (Clothes as a saddle and walk way.) 2 Corinthians 9:7, Proverbs 19:17

The disciples gave themselves. Romans 12:1

WELCOME THE KING WITH PRAISE Vss. 37-38

Revelation 4:11, Psalm 113

I wash a brother’s feet, so to speak, when I serve him or her humbly. Philippians 2:1-4

I wash a brother’s feet when I help them deal with a sin problem. Galatians 6:1-2

If lowly service to my brother means literally washing his feet, I WILL wash his feet.

ON OUR KNEES - LEARNING FROM MEN OF PRAYER –

LESSON #5 – ELIJAH

A COMPLETE LESSON

INTERACTION

V     Did you have any blessings this week while praying the prayer of Jabez?

V     Have you ever stopped praying about something before you got an answer?  Why?

V     What kind of person comes to mind when you think of the Prophet Elijah?

V     Why do you think Elijah was such an effective man of prayer?

There are few people like Elijah who are remembered for their effective praying.  His prayers were powerful. If we are going to be effective men of prayer, we must catch some of the spirit of Elijah and learn to pray in a similar manner.

James 5:16-18 – Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. [17] Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. [18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

·       In James 5:16, what two qualities are mentioned that were true of Elijah? Why are these qualities significant?

·       In what ways was Elijah just like us?  Why should that encourage us?

·       How can we be too ambitious in our prayers?

·       How can we not be ambitious enough?

Let’s learn some lessons about powerful prayer from Elijah in 1 Kings 18:17-46.  Remember that King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were ruling in Israel at the time.  Elijah had already announced and prayed for a drought. It hadn’t rained for 3½ years.

·       Elijah appeared before Ahab and told him to gather Israel together. Vss. 17-19

·       When the people were gathered on Mt. Carmel, Elijah confronted the people with their idol worship and proposed a contest to find out who the real God is.         1 Kings 18:20-24

·       The prophets of Baal failed miserably in their attempt to call fire down from Heaven. 1 Kings 18:25-29

REPAIR PENITENTLY Vs. 30

·       First, Elijah repaired the altar of the Lord.

·       Either through destruction by the enemy or neglect, the altar was in disrepair.

·       Today, we offer the sacrifice of prayer and praise to God. (Hebrews 13:15, Ephesians 6:18). The altar upon which we offer this sacrifice is our lives.

·       If we are in Spiritual disrepair, we cannot effectively offer our prayers to God. (Psalm 66:18). We must repair our altars through confession of sin, and making things right with others. (1 John 1:9, Matthew 5:23-24)

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 5:23-24 - Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; [24] Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

REQUEST RESPONSIBLY Vss. 36-37

·       What does Elijah teach us about motives for our prayers?

·       Why is it important that we act and speak in accordance to God’s will?

·       How do we know when we asking according to the will of God?                                                                               And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: [15] And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

·       What are some of the things that we should pray for that will help people’s hearts turn back to God?

RELAX CONFIDENTLY Vss. 31-35, 38-39

·       Elijah made the task more difficult by digging a trench and having the fire doused with water 3 times. However, Elijah was still confident that God would answer his prayers.

·       There are times when we are praying that things get worse before they get better. Why?

·       In Vss. 38-39 God answers with fire from Heaven.

RESPOND EXPECTANTLY Vss. 41-46

·       Vs. 41 – What visible signs were there that God was ready to send rain?

·       How could Elijah be so confident?

·       How does anxiety or doubt hinder our prayers?

·       Vs. 42 – Why do you think Ahab was so compliant?

·       Vs. 43 – Should we be looking for God’s answers to our prayers as if we expect them? Why?

·       Do you see any practical lessons for us in verses 44-46?

REPEAT FERVENTLY Vss. 42-43

·       When did Elijah stop praying for rain?

·       When is it not good to repeat ourselves in prayer?

·       When is it good to repeat ourselves in prayer?

Luke 11:5-10 - And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; [6] For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? [7] And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. [8] I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. [9] And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. [10] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Luke 18:1-8 - And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; [2] Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: [3] And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. [4] And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; [5] Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. [6] And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. [7] And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? [8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
