1 Samuel 18

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man - Lesson #3

(Complete Notes)

 

·       How is a man “never the same” after he gets married?

·       How is a man or woman “never the same” after the death of a spouse or a child?

·       What are some other events that you were “never the same” after they happened?

·       How would you be “never the same” if all of a sudden you became a national hero?

·       What is the biggest change you anticipate in the near or not too distant future?

·       React to this statement:  Being “never the same” after a life changing event will affect us in the long haul either positively or adversely, depending how we handle the change.

 

Last week we saw the classic confrontation between David, the challenger, and Goliath the champion.  As you know, David won.  Israel had a great victory.  Becoming a national hero changed David’s life forever.  The purpose for this lesson is to examine the changes in David’s life, and how we might adapt to similar changes in our own lives.

COVENANT WITH JONATHAN - Vss. 1, 3-4

1. THEY WERE SOUL BROTHERS – Vs. 1 

...the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David...

 

·       What do you know about Jonathan?

·       What would have attracted Jonathan to David or David to Jonathan?

 

·       What attracts you in another person that motivates you to pursue friendship?

·       Why should Christian men pursue Christian friendships?

·       What makes solid Christian friendships special?

 

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 - For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. [13] For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

 

John 17:20-21 - Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; [21] That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

2. THEY WERE SOUL LOVERS - Vs. 2 

...and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 

·       According to the passages below, what are the qualities of love that we should be developing in a Christian friendship?

 

John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

 

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 - Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, [5] Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; [6] Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; [7] Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. [8] Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

3. THEY WERE SOUL SUPPORTERS - Vs. 3 

Then Jonathan and David made a covenant...

·       This was a commitment to bear the burdens of the other.  Jonathan interceded for, protected, and encouraged David in his problems with Saul. 1 Samuel 19:1-7, 20:1-42

1 Samuel 23:16 - And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.

 

Galatians 6:2 - Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

·       What unspoken agreements do Christian men have?

4. THEY WERE SOUL SHARERS - Vs. 4

·       Jonathan shared what he had with David.

·       What are some of the things that Christian men might share with their Christian friends?

CHANGE OF SERVICE - Vss. 2, 5

·       Why was David no longer permitted to go home?

·       How might we face a change of service as Christians?

·       What should be our reaction to any change of service that God gives to us?

·       Vs. 5 - What two qualities will help us handle change?

CHALLENGE OF POPULARITY- Vss. 6-7

·       David became now the "matinee idol" of Israel.

·       How do you think David handled praise?

·       How should we handle praise, especially when it is lavish?

CONFLICT WITH SAUL - Vss. 8-16

·       Saul was not happy with the praise that David received. Why?

·       In these verses, who acted more like a king and why?

·       What must we remember when we face conflict with others?

Matthew 5:44-45 - But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; [45] That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

 

Romans 12:16-21 - Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. [17] Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. [18] If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. [19] Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. [20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. [21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

 

James 1:2-4 - My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

AM I PREPARED?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 3 – Nehemiah 2

(A complete lesson)

 

·        Can you remember a time when you or someone else was not prepared to do something that was supposed to be done?  What were the results?  How would being prepared have made the situation better?

·        Why is preparation especially necessary when handling a crisis?

 

In this chapter Nehemiah shows us how to be prepared for a project God has called us to complete.

HE INVOKED THE KING’S SYMPATHY – Vss. 1-3

 

·       Nehemiah was the King’s Cupbearer – According to Cyril Barber, "As a cupbearer, he is in a unique position. He holds the offices of prime minister and master of ceremonies rolled into one. Fear of intrigue and the constant threat of assassination caused a king to lead a relatively lonely life. It was, therefore, quite natural for him to gravitate toward a man of wisdom, discretion, and ability. A cupbearer who had his monarch's best interest at heart, and who stayed abreast of the times could frequently exert great influence upon his sovereign. Besides testing the king's wine, he was also responsible for guarding the king's sleeping quarters." Cyril Barber, Nehemiah and the Dynamics of Effect Leadership, (Neptune, New Jersey, Loizeaux Brothers Inc. 1976), p 14

·       Vs. 1 – Nehemiah had been praying for four months.  Why did he wait so long before talking to the king? 

·       Why is timing so important in what we do?  How do we know when we’ve reached the right time to do something?

·       Although we are not to outwardly announce or display when we have a prayer burden (Matthew 6:6), it will often show.

·       Vs. 2 – Why was Nehemiah afraid?

·       Vs. 3 – Notice that Nehemiah’s answer showed that he was prepared for this moment.

·       How does Nehemiah’s answer show tact?  Why is tact so important? 

HE CRIED TO GOD IN SUPPLICATION – Vs. 4

·       This was an “emergency prayer”.  Why do you think he prayed it now and not when he was initially frightened?

·       What emergency prayer has God answered for you?

·       When are emergency prayers appropriate?  When are they inappropriate?

HE REQUESTED TO BE SENT – Vs. 5-6

·       Vs. 5 - Why was Nehemiah’s request a great personal sacrifice?

·       What are you willing to give up in order to get the Gospel out? (Answer God, not us!)

·       I think it obvious that Nehemiah thought through and prayed through this request before he made it.  It is part of being prepared.

·       Vs. 6 - Why was granting this request a great sacrifice on the part of the King? Why do you think the king wanted set times of departure and return. Notice that Nehemiah had thought and prayed through that question before it was asked.

·       Why do you think the king was pleased to send Nehemiah?

HE ASKED FOR SIGNATURES AND SUPPLIES – Vss. 7-8

·       Why did Nehemiah make requests for supplies and approvals right away?  Why didn’t he wait for another time?

·       Why is it important to know what we need, even if it isn’t time to ask for it?

·       Have you seen a project fail because proper supplies and permissions were not secured?

·       If a person wants to do something for the church that is not already being done, what procedure should they follow?

HE RECEIVED A SUPPLEMENT – Vss. 9-10

·       Nehemiah had been given a security force which he hadn’t asked for.  Was this a valuable supplement? Why?

·       Have you ever received more than you’ve asked for?  What does this tell you about your God?

HE MADE A SURVEY – Vss. 11-16

·       Vs. 11 - Why do you think Nehemiah wisely waited three days before doing or saying anything when he arrived in Jerusalem?

·       Vs. 12-16 - Why did Nehemiah quietly make a survey of the walls and why was he so tight-lipped about it? 

·       What does this teach us?

HE WAITED FOR THE RIGHT TIME TO SHARE – Vss. 17-18

·       When Nehemiah presented his proposal to rebuild the wall, he first identified the problem.  The people needed to know that he knew what the problem was.  The people probably needed to be reminded of the severity of the problem.

·       Next, Nehemiah proposed that they, as a team, build the wall.  What is the problem with one man projects?

·       Nehemiah then told of all that happened previously and how God’s good hand had been upon them.  He gave evidence that God was in the rebuilding program.  After all, if God isn’t in it, why bother?

·       Although it is not stated, I think there were probably questions and answers.  Nehemiah had already surveyed the walls and provided for the supplies and the permissions.  He could intelligently discuss the project.

·       It was then that the people said, “Let us rise up and build”.  Why is it important to have people you are trying to lead behind you?

Psalm 142
THE LONESOME VALLEY
 

There will be times of deep distress when we are standing alone.  For those times of loneliness and frustration there is a wonderful Psalm of David, Psalm 142.

 

David was in a “lonesome valley” when he wrote this Psalm.  Only, his “lonesome valley” was actually a cave where he was evidently very alone.

 

We are given some interesting information about the Psalm from the heading.

 

A Maschil was perhaps a Psalm of instruction.  This Psalm gives instruction to all Christians who feel like they are “up against it” or having an extremely difficult time.

 

The author is David.  You know who David was. 

·       He was the young teenager who stood up to the Giant Goliath when the whole army of Israel was fleeing from him.  1 Samuel 17:45-46

·       Because of this victory David became a national hero.  He was then a public figure that didn’t let his popularity go to his head. 1 Samuel 18:14

·       There was a problem, however.  The current king, Saul, had disqualified himself as king, and God told him that he and his family would be replaced.  When David emerged it became obvious to Saul who that next king would be.  Saul eventually became David’s enemy.

·       Saul tried to kill David on several occasions.

·       David had an enemy that he didn’t want. David did not try to hurt Saul in return. He waited for God to deal with Saul in God’s time.

·       David did eventually become king.

 

Now back to our heading.  This Psalm is a prayer written in a cave.

David had to flee from Saul. He became a refugee and often hid in caves. Saul was out to get him, so he hid.

 

I think it most likely that the cave referred to in this Psalm is the cave Adullam. 1 Samuel 22:1-2

It seems that David was alone when he wrote this Psalm.

I believe it was written before his family and friends showed up.   

 

This prayer is one that might encourage you when you feel like you are in a “lonesome valley”.

 

DAVID’S APPROACH – Vss. 1-2

 

David knew who to approach in that lonesome valley.  He sets the example for us.  He comes to God.  Let us remember that this is exactly where God wants us when we hurt. He wants us before His throne.  It is a throne of grace! Hebrews 4:15-16

 

Vs. 1 – David was not silent in his lonesome valley.  His prayer was a prayer that was made out loud.  It was a burdened prayer that unloaded everything on God. Psalm 55:22  

 

Vs. 2 – David poured out his complaint.  He was not complaining about God.  He was expressing to God his concerns.  He spelled out his trouble to God.

 

If God is all knowing, omniscient, why should David or us tell God what the problem is?

Bringing the problem to God is an act of faith.  God wants us to trust Him.

 

Another reason for pouring out your complaint before God is that He cares. 1 Peter 5:7

 

DAVID’S AGONY – Vss. 3-4

 

Vs. 3 – David’s spirit was overwhelmed.  His problems and sorrow were so great that he almost didn’t know where to turn. You’ve probably been in that position.

 

David’s enemies, particularly Saul, were setting secret traps for him.

Satan works this way as well.  That is why we sometimes get broadsided with problems and sin. Satan sets a trap when we least expect it.

 

Vs. 4 – If you are right handed, you want your tools at your right hand.  You want your friends handy to help you as well. Perhaps this is why we have the phrase “Right hand man”.

 

David looked for help, and at that moment in time there was nobody there.  There was no help available.

Eventually the help would come, but for the moment he was on his own.

But was he really alone?

The answer, of course, is no!

 

Even in this agony, David was not alone!

when my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path…

 

DAVID’S ASSISTANCE – Vss. 5-6

 

Vs. 5 – There are two good reasons why David cried out to God here.

 

God was David’s refuge.  He could always come to God for protection and help.  God is always available to His children in times of deepest distress.

 

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

 

God is also our refuge from our biggest problem, punishment for sin.

It is God the Son who died on the cross, was buried and rose again.

It is God the Son who is our refuge from judgment when we put our trust in Him.

Have you taken your refuge in Christ? John 3:36

 

God was David’s most prized position. God was more important than anything and anybody.  Is that true of you? Lamentations 3:24

 

Notice in this verse that the Lord is our refuge and portion in the “Land of the living.”  Christianity is not just for when I die.  God is our refuge and portion for all eternity.

But God is to be my refuge now while I’m living.

God is to be my portion, my prized possession now while I’m living.

 

Vs. 6 – I love David’s honesty.  He needed God’s help, God’s assistance, and he admitted it.  He generally wasn’t one of these people who tried to solve His own problems.  He relied on God.

 

He was “brought very low” by his persecutors.

He sought God’s assistance because he realized that his persecutors were stronger than he was.

 

You will find very often that your persecutors are stronger than you are.  Your ultimate persecutor, Satan is. That’s why you need God’s help. 1 Peter 5:8-9

 

DAVID’S ASSURANCE – Vs. 7

 

Vs. 7 – I wouldn’t take the word “prison” literally here.

 

We have all sorts of problems that are “prisons”.

Usually when we want to be delivered by God from our prisons we are looking for an easier life for ourselves. However David had a different motive.

 

If God delivered David from prison, David would be able to give God the glory for it! He would be able to give the praise to God for it. God would be glorified.

 

Instead of asking God to deliver us from prison so we’d have an easier time of it, let us ask God to deliver us from prison so that he would be glorified!

 

And when we are delivered from prison it will be the righteous who are there for us.

 

I love the last phrase of this Psalm, for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

 

David was confident that God would deal bountifully with Him.

When someone does something bountifully, it is generous, it is gracious, and it is more than we need.

When God deals bountifully with us, He is generous, He is gracious, and He gives us more than we need. Psalm 73:23-26

 

Are you in a “lonesome valley”?

Learn from David and be comforted.

If you are not in a lonesome valley, you will be.

Learn from David so you will be prepared when that valley comes!

CONFRONTATION

 

All through life, we have confrontations with other people. These confrontations are often between people who love each other, and other times they are between people who don't love each other.

 

In Mark 5, our Lord Jesus has a confrontation with a demon-possessed man. In reality, this confrontation is with Satan.

 

I. Satan's Control Vss. 1-5

 

II. The Savior's Victory Vss. 7-17

 

III. The Saint's Responsibility Vss. 18-20

     The new believer was truly changed. He wanted to follow Jesus.                                                                                                                                                                                                

      Instead, Jesus wanted him to go home and testify.

     The responsibility is to do as Jesus says.

     This man did!

THREE KINDS OF FAITH

 

There are three people who each show us a different aspect of the faith which we should have in Christ.

 

1. RESIGNED FAITH - The healed demoniac. Vss. 38-39

    This man from who Jesus cast out a legion of devils wanted to go with

    Jesus. Jesus told him to go home and tell what great things God had

    done. He obeyed. This man was resigned to doing the will of his new

    master. (See Vss. 26-37 for background information.)

 

2. REACHING FAITH - The woman with the issue of blood. Vss. 43-48

 

3. RELIANT FAITH - Jairus - Vss. 41-42, 49-56

    Especially see Vss. 49-50. Jairus had to trust Jesus even though he had

    just received tragic news.

COLOSSIANS 1:1-8

THANKFUL FOR OTHERS

#1 in a series on Colossians

 

As we begin a series on the Book of Colossians, it is none other than the Apostle Paul will teach us gratitude. He will show us how to be thankful to God for others.

 

We can find our attitude towards other Christians not always what it should be because:

·       Other Christians do things to hurt us.

·       Other Christians do things that mess up our plans.

·       Other Christians are sometimes people we don’t care for.

·       Other Christians sometimes hold varying doctrinal positions.

 

When Paul wrote to the Colossians, he was writing to a people that he had for the most part never met. He’d never been to Colossae. And to make matters worse, he was writing to people who were guilty of doctrinal error.

 

And yet, Paul was able to share that he was giving thanks for those people on a regular basis.

 

We will learn from Paul how to give thanks to God for others, as we realize that we can give thanks for:

(Please note that I gave background to the Book of Colossians and comments on Vss. 1-2 before preaching the outline. You will probably want to do the same if you are doing a series.)

 

THE MARKS OF SALVATION

 

Vs. 3 – Notice that there is no separation between prayer and thanksgiving. Paul says, “When I pray for you I thank God for you.”

 

Philippians 4:6 makes it obvious that prayer should always be accompanied with thanksgiving.

 

Philippians 4:6 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

 

Paul says in Philippians 1:3 - I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

 

It should be our personal policy not to talk to God about anyone until we have thanks God for them!

   

There are certain marks or characteristics that generally accompany believers which we can thank God for.

 

·       FAITH – Vs. 4

No one is going to heaven without saving faith. We mean faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Savior.  We can be thankful when another person, no matter how cantankerous in our eyes, has made a decision to trust Christ for everlasting life.   

 

1 John 5:12 - He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

 

Rejoice when you can be thankful to God that someone else is going to join you in Heaven.

 

·       LOVE – Vs. 4

When we are saved we learn to love and appreciate other believers. We should have a reciprocal love agreement with other Christians. I am to love other Christians, and they are to love me.  I should be thankful for other believers because I love them.

 

John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

 

As I am thankful for my physical brothers and sister, I should also be thankful for my spiritual brothers and sisters in Christ.   

 

·       HOPE – Vs. 5

 

Faith started it all in the past.

Love is what I operate with right now.

Hope looks forward to the future coming of our Lord and Savior.

 

We can be thankful that others besides ourselves have that precious hope we are looking forward to.

You and I aren’t the only ones looking forward to the glorious coming of the Lord Jesus. All Christians have this hope.

 

Titus 2:13 - Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

 

1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 - For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

 

The Christian who is sick, the Christian who is hurting, and the Christian that might not agree without your theology also has the same “blessed hope”.

    

THE MULTIPLICATION OF SALVATION – Vs. 6

 

When the Gospel is preached the Gospel bears fruit.

 

Not only is their fruit of souls saved, but there are the “fruits of righteousness.”  People start living Godly changed lives and we can be thankful for that.

 

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

 

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 - Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, [10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. [11] And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

 

There is also the fruit of the Spirit that will be evident when folks are truly saved.   

 

Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

 

Be thankful when you hear of believers in other parts of the world.  The Gospel is still bearing fruit all over, although it is more evident in some areas than in others.

 

THE MESSENGER OF SALVATION – Vss. 7-8

 

Why did the Colossians have the salvation message?

It was because of a fellow servant in Jesus Christ by the name of Epaphras.

He ministered the Gospel faithfully to the Colossians.

Christians are saved because of faithful ministers.

People are growing in Christ because of faithful ministers.

 

1 Timothy 5:17 - Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

 

Make sure that you give thanks for the “faithful ministers of Christ” whom you know.

 

Let’s be thankful for other Christians this week:
