LONG LIVE THE KING?

1 Samuel – Selected Passages

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man - Lesson #4

A Complete Lesson

·       When is it most difficult to accept the leadership of a political figure like a president, governor, or mayor?

·       When is it most difficult to accept the leadership of a boss, foreman, or teacher?

·       When it is it most difficult to accept the leadership of a pastor, elder, deacon or parent?

·       "Long live the king!" - a common and familiar blessing for a ruling monarch.

"Long live the king!" - words wishing someone in

authority a long and happy reign.

"Long live the king!" - easy words to say when the

king is good, and loving, and kind!

·       "Long live the king!" - But what if the king is a tyrant? What if the king has a personal hatred for me? What if the king seems to have a personal vendetta against me? I might start to question and say, "Long live the king?"

·       David was in that position.  He had killed a giant, done the king’s bidding, behaved himself wisely, became the king’s son in-law, and still gained the disfavor of the king, persecuted in several ways.

·       You and I will sometimes find ourselves in that position with someone who is in authority over us. No matter how much good we do we are belittled or persecuted.

·       David teaches us how to handle ourselves when we are in a position that makes us want to say, “Long live the king?”

DAVID REGROUPED WHEN HE HAD TO

·       1 Samuel 18:5-9 – Why was Saul paranoid about David?

·       Why do leaders get paranoid about those under them?

·       1 Samuel 18:10-12 and 1 Samuel 19:8-11 – David was suddenly attacked.  What are some of the ways leaders start throwing “javelins”?

·       David dodged, ducked and darted when he had to. He regrouped.  How can we regroup when we receive unfair attacks?

·       What part should prayer have when we are unfairly attacked?

Matthew 5:44-45 - But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; [45] That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

·       1 Samuel 20:1 – What lessons does David teach us about unfair attacks from leaders?

DAVID RETREATED (RAN) WHEN HAD TO

·       1 Samuel 20 – Although David regrouped as much as he could, it soon became evident that in this case a different solution was needed.  He needed to retreat or lose his life.

·       When will we know that it is time to run from a situation?

·       Why should running be a last resort and not a first defense?

·       1 Samuel 21:1 – David left by himself.  What does that teach us about leaving a situation?

DAVID DIDN’T RETALIATE WHEN HE COULD HAVE

·       Who would have won a “one on one” fight between David and Saul?  Why did such a fight never happen?

·       1 Samuel 24 tells of a time when David could have retaliated?  What brief blessing did David receive in verses 18-22?

·       Again in 1 Samuel 26 David had an opportunity to retaliate.  What do verses 7-11 teach us about the advice of our friends?

·       What are some common ways that we might retaliate against those who have hurt us?

·       Comment on the verses below.

Romans 12:19-21 - Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. [20] Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. [21] Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

·       In what ways is Jesus a good role model for us when we are attacked by superiors?

DAVID RESPECTED THE KING’S AUTHORITY

·       David had already been anointed king.  Why did he wait to establish his kingdom until after the death of Saul?

·       Comment on these verses:

Psalm 75:6-7 - For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. [7] But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

·       Even when David briefly joined the enemy forces in

1 Samuel 27 and 29 he did nothing to harm Saul.

·       In what ways can we remain loyal to someone in authority even if we have to run from their administration?

DAVID REMAINED LOYAL

·       Saul’s death is recorded in 1 Samuel 30.

·       According to 2 Samuel 1:11-27, how do we tell that David forgave Saul?

·       What happens when people fail to forgive others?

Hebrews 12:15 - Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

·       Who is to be our role model for forgiving others? Why?

Ephesians 4:31-32 - Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: [32] And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

·       In retrospect, what helped David behave so well under duress?

·       What will help us behave well under duress?

AM I A TEAM PLAYER?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 4 – Nehemiah 3

(A complete lesson)

·        A bricklayer’s testimony… http://jstrande.typepad.com/storyblog/2004/07/trying_to_do_th.html

·        Although the story of the bricklayer is funny and fictitious, what important lesson   does it teach?

·        Why is it dangerous to be a “Lone Ranger” as a Christian?

·        What qualities are involved for being a good “team player”?

Nehemiah 3, at first look, is a boring list of the names of people who were involved in the building of the walls of Jerusalem. It is here, though, that we find some things that the builders had in common.  Some things need to be true of everyone if we are going to work as a team.

CONCERN

þ   Although it is not stated specifically, there was concern on the part of the individuals involved.  What do you think the citizens of Jerusalem were concerned about that motivated to help build the walls?

þ   Several groups came in from other cities to help such as Tekoa, Gibeon, and Mizpah. What concerns might have motivated them to help, even though they didn’t live in Jerusalem?

þ   What mutual concerns will help us solve a family or a church crisis?

þ   What mutual concerns will all Christians have that are truly committed to Christ?

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS

þ    The fact that everyone seemed to get busy is an indication of their conscientiousness. What are some other indications that a person is conscientious?

þ    Remember that there were probably thousands of people working on this project.  Only the leaders are mentioned.  One of the key reasons this project worked was because “the people had a mind to work”.  (Nehemiah 4:6)

þ    I am reminded that the construction of Christ’s church is to be a group effort involving leaders and individuals (Ephesians 4:11-16).  Let us not short-change others by failing to try and involve them.

COMPLIANCE

{    Why is it necessary to have standards in a church?

{    Why do people not like standards?

{    In the building of the walls, there had to be standards.  What would the wall have looked like if there weren’t standards and everyone did their own thing?

{    Remember, each one of us will answer to the ultimate building inspector!                                      1 Corinthians 3:11-15

{    Because we answer to the Lord, our goal in building should be to be compliant to Him.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

COOPERATION

!  One thing that impresses me and others is the different types of people involved in the work.  What are some of the different occupations found listed here in chapter 3?

!  One group that should be signaled out for their cooperation is the Tekoites. Their leaders didn’t help but they managed to repair two sections of wall. 3:5, 27

!  Another indication of good cooperation is that the ladies were also involved in what was probably considered man’s work (Vs. 12).  What were some of the “behind the scenes” things that the ladies were probably doing?

COORDINATION

There were 40-41 separate building projects going on over a distance somewhere between a mile and a mile and a half.  Why was coordination necessary?

What repeated words in chapter 3 show that the works were coordinating with each other?

What part does communication have in coordination?

Why is coordination important in mission projects?

Why is coordination important in the local church?

COMMENDATION

This chapter is actually Nehemiah’s commendation of his leaders.  He couldn’t commend the thousands that worked, but he could single out the leaders.

Why do people need to be commended for jobs well done?

What happens when people are not commended or thanked?

Remember one of the key jobs of assembling together is to “exhort one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25).  I believe that part of encouraging others is commending them.

Don’t miss Baruch in verse 20.  He stood above all the rest, and Nehemiah said so!

CONSECRATION

U     Eliashib the high priest and his brethren the priests are mentioned in verse 1.  It is significant that they sanctified their work.  Their work was consecrated to God.

U     Let us make sure that all we do in the area of building, crisis management, or any other area, be consecrated to the Lord.

Psalm 146

KEY CONCEPTS

Psalms 146-150 are called the "Hallelujah Psalms", because they begin

and end with the word "Hallelujah" in Hebrew.  The word means

"Praise The Lord".  In Psalm 146, there are 2 key concepts, praise and

trust, which appear time and time again throughout the Psalms.  We

need to master these, if we know Christ as Savior.

Matthew 21:1-9

I LOVE A PARADE

LIFE OF CHRIST #46

We return to our study of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ for a joyous parade.  He arrived in Bethany for His last visit to Jerusalem.  On an evening before what we call “Palm Sunday” Jesus was at a dinner where Mary of Bethany anointed Him with expensive perfume.  When Judas and other disciples showed displeasure, Jesus defended her and explained that she had done it for his burial.

The parade the next day involved a king and His followers, and is probably the most important parade in all of history.

The King of course is the Lord Jesus Himself. The parade occurred coming into the city of Jerusalem the very week that He was crucified. The day of the parade is called “Palm Sunday” because of the use of palms in the procession.

On Palm Sunday Jesus by his actions is saying to Jerusalem and the Jewish people, “I am your king, chose if you will have me!”  Jesus knew that although there was a great reception for Him on Palm Sunday, that He would be rejected and crucified.

THE PLAN – Vss. 1-3

Vs. 1 – Bethphage and Bethany were cities not far from each other or from Jerusalem.

Here we see our Lord putting into action a plan for the parade into Jerusalem.

This was the time to go “public”.

Israel would have the opportunity to accept or reject Jesus Christ. Of course although there were great crowds, except for the disciples, the reception was not one of true acceptance.  The leadership especially wanted nothing to do with Jesus Christ.

Vss. 2-3 – The plan was indeed quite simple for the two men who were sent.

They were to find an ass or a donkey and her colt. They were to loose them, and bring them to the Lord. If anyone was to question what was being done, they were to answer, “The Lord hath need of them.”  That would dispel the problem.

The most arresting thought that I face when I contemplate these verses is the phrase, “The Lord hath need of them.”

The Lord of the universe, the very son of God found a lowly jackass and her colt to be useful in his plan.

If the Lord can find a use for a jackass and her colt, how much more can the Lord find use for you and I?

Although we are not worthy, the Lord who died for us, the Lord who gives us eternal life when we believe on Him finds us to be useful in His plan.

Matthew 28:19-20 - We are to go to the world, preach the Gospel and teach.

John 13:34-35 - We are to demonstrate love.

Titus 3:8 - We are to do good works.

1 Peter 2:9-10 - God has chosen us to be the priests today that offer sacrifices of praise and intercessory prayer for others.

Be ready to be used, because like these disciples, the Lord has need of you. YOU ARE PART OF HIS PLAN!

THE PROPHECY – Vss. 4-5

The Lord had the utmost respect for the Word of God.  After all, He was and is God.

The reason there was a parade was because God’s Word said that there would be.

Verses 4-5 tell us that this event is fulfillment of the words of the Old Testament prophet, Zechariah.

Zechariah 9:9 - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

He is just, or righteous.  He is sinless.

He has salvation. Jesus will come a second time with deliverance or salvation for Israel.

When He came the first time He also had salvation.

He died on the cross to save us from our sins.

He rode on a donkey or an ass. The horse was an animal which symbolized war. The donkey was an animal that symbolized peace. In early times in Israel, the donkey was a symbolic of kingship.

Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, thus saying to Israel, and to us:

“Here is your king. Receive Him!”

“Here is your salvation. Accept it!”

He has fulfilled the prophecies.

He has purchased your salvation.

Receive Him as your Savior!

Acknowledge Him as the King of your life. Romans 10:9-10

We as Christians are quick to see Jesus as Savior, but not as quick to see Him as Lord or king.

If Jesus is Savior, He is also Lord!

He was presented as king and king he must be in our lives.

Zechariah said that the King would arrive.

The King did arrive in Jerusalem that day!

Let Him be king in your life.

THE PARTICIPATION – Vss. 6-11

Jesus would be welcomed into Jerusalem.

Each day you can welcome Jesus as a vital part of your life.

The ingredients of participation now are the same as they were back then.

Vs. 6 – The first step was OBEDIENCE.

The two disciples did as they were told.

They did not argue.

They did not gripe.

They did not complain.

You and I serve a loving king.

When we are called upon to obey, it is not because the king is a tyrant.

It is because the king knows best.

Let us be obedient as these disciples. John 13:13

John 13:13 - Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Vss. 7-8 – The next step in participation was GIVING.

The disciples used their clothes for Him to sit on. They provided the saddle.

Then others put their clothes along the way.

Still others placed palms, as if to say, “Welcome!”

But it was all giving.

To make our King feel welcome we should be willing to give:

Give of our time

Give of our services

Give of our resources

Give of our money 2 Corinthians 9:7

2 Corinthians 9:7 - Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

The disciples not only participated with obedience and giving, but also with their PRAISE for their king.

Vss. 9-11 – The disciples began it, and the multitudes picked up the chant. But it was definitely praise.

In a king’s court

In a king’s country

The king is welcomed with pomp and with praise.

Here is the praise of the multitude shouting, “Save now! (Hosanna) which He did!

“Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord! (which He did)

“Hosanna in the highest!”

Although our Lord arranged for the ride, our Lord did not arrange for the outpouring of praise. God made sure that happened!

In fact in Luke 19:39-40 it says, And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. [40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

The King was worthy of the praise that He received!

He is especially worthy if you consider His Heavenly glory. Isaiah 6:1-5

Let me ask you a question.

If Jesus is your king, how much praise do you give Him? Hebrews 13:15, Psalm 107:1-2, Psalm 98:1

So there was a parade into Jerusalem on that Palm Sunday.

There were many people present.

THE PLAN

THE PROPHECY – The king has come!

THE PARTICIPANTS

·       They obeyed

·       They gave

·       They praised

Is Jesus your King?

Are you acting like He is your king?

Luke 10:2

ON OUR KNEES FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

You might like to quote a little known, but very wise lady, Dottie Peters, my wife of over 34 years. She said "It's our generation that's blown it!"  She means the "baby-boomers" and refers to the fact that we (as a generation) have failed to train our children properly.  We've blown it in other way. We in the church have failed to bring the message of the Gospel to others our own age, and to the children who will follow us in leadership.  There is a solution to this problem given by our Lord Jesus in Luke 10:2

THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT SUPPLY - "The harvest truly is great..."

THERE IS A SEVERE SHORTAGE - "...but the laborers are few:"

THERE IS A SURE SOURCE - "...the Lord of the harvest..."

THERE IS A SIMPLE SOLUTION - "Pray ye...that he would send forth laborers into his harvest."

RECEIVED OF THE LORD

1 Corinthians 11:23-34

Paul received his instructions concerning The Lord's Table from the Lord himself.  Paul shows us that the Lord's Table is a time of examination. We need to take three "looks" as we prepare to partake of  The Lord's Table.

COLOSSIANS 1:9-14

PRAYER LIST FOR OTHERS

#2 in Colossians series

In these verses I find a prayer list for others, meaning other Christians.

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FILLED - Vs. 9

Colossians 1:9 - For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

When someone is filled, they are just that, full!

God wants us to be filled with the knowledge of God's Will.

This knowledge of God's will be "in all wisdom and Spiritual understanding."

There is only one place that you are going to get that kind of knowledge and that's from the Word of God. We should be more excited about being full of the Word of God than we are excited about being full of food.

Read Psalm 119:97-100

When a person is in the Word of God:

·       He will be wiser than his enemies – Vs. 98

·       He will have more personal understanding of how the word applies to him than all his teachers. Vs. 99

·       He will understand more than the “ancients” which were before Him. – Vs. 100

Of course when one studies, reads, and meditates on the Word of God, he will be filled with the knowledge of His will.

Another way a person will be filled with the knowledge of His will is to be under the teaching and preaching of the word. 2 Timothy 4:2

A true preacher of the word will help you be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding because:

·       He will preach the Word to you.

·       He will reprove (refute) your errors.

·       He will rebuke you.

·       He will teach you.

·       He will encourage you

We can pray that others will get into the Word and under the teaching of the Word, and that they would understand the Word.

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FAITHFUL - Vs. 10

That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing...and increasing in the knowledge of God;

What do you think it means to walk worthy of the Lord?

It is to conduct ourselves in such a way that we glorify the Lord and bring no reproach to his name.

Pleasing the Lord is the most important thing in the world.

Pleasing the Lord should be our daily goal.

The Bible talks much about the Christian's walk. As we practice these "walking" verses we will walk worthy of Him unto all pleasing. Galatians 5:16, 22-26, Ephesians 5:2, Colossians 4:5, 1 John 1:6-7

As we are faithful as we walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, we will increase in the knowledge of God.

It should be our goal to know God better. It was Paul's goal. Philippians 3:10, 2Peter 1:2-3, 3:18

Let us pray for others and ourselves that we will be faithful in our walk.

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FRUITFUL - Vs. 10

...being fruitful in every good work...

Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Matthew 5:14-16 - Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Galatians 6:10 - As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FORTIFIED -Vs. 11

Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

In order for the things mentioned here to be true in our lives we must be strengthened by the Spirit of God.  Zechariah 4:6

Zechariah 4:6 - Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Remember God’s power is awesome. Revelation 1:8

As God fortifies us, we will be able to have the following:

·        Patience or endurance

Perhaps Paul's challenge to Timothy is good here. 2 Timothy 2:3, Psalms 3:6

·        Longsuffering

When we are long suffering we put up with a lot from the hands of others.

·        With Joyfulness

This is the kicker.

It's easier to be patient and longsuffering and to grouse about it, than it is to be patient and longsuffering and to be joyful about it!

People will take notice when you are joyful through trials.

Nehemiah 8:10 …for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

·        Giving Thanks - Vss. 12-14 – We’ll talk about this next week.

Pray that others will be fortified by God’s spirit to endure.

So here is a prayer list for others and yourselves this week.

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FILLED

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FAITHFUL

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FRUITFUL

PRAY THAT OTHERS WILL BE FORTIFIED
