GRACE ILLUSTRATED

2 Samuel 9

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man

Lesson #5 of 8 – A COMPLETE LESSON

·       Think of grace as giving or receiving something which is not deserved.

·       In what ways have you shown grace to someone or received grace from someone?

·       How does God’s grace differ from man’s grace?

·       “(God’s) Grace is everything for nothing to those who don’t deserve anything.” Our Daily Bread, October 31, 1997

·       Why is it important that we as Christians extend grace to others?

King Saul and his son Jonathan were eventually killed in battle. In time David became king over all of Israel. He then had time to think about his covenant of peace and mutual support with Jonathan. In this chapter we see David extending grace to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.

This is an illustration of the grace that God extends to us.

Let us look at Mephibosheth’s reception of grace and how it relates to us.

HE WAS SEPARATED

2 Samuel 4:4 - And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.

·       Because there was a new king in Israel, Mephibosheth was evidently kept in hiding. Why?

·       He stayed in what was probably an isolated place called Lo-debar.

·       It was very possibly in or near the desert.  According to Chuck Swindoll, the word Lo-debar means "no pastureland."  Charles R. Swindoll, David, A Man of Passion & Destiny, (Dallas Texas, Word Publishing Inc., 1997), pp. 172-173

·       What do you think Mephibosheth would have been taught as he was raised in this desolate area?  What do you think was his greatest fear?

·       Mephibosheth was separated from the “main stream” of life.

·       In what way is every person separated from God?

Isaiah 64:6 - But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Isaiah 59:2 - But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

·       Why is separation from God such a serious problem?

Ezekiel 18:4 - Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

HE WAS SOUGHT – Vss. 1-5

·       Vs. 1 – What was David’s motivation for seeking out a relative of Jonathan’s?  What is God’s motive in seeking poor lost sinners?

·       Vss. 2-4 – Ziba, a servant of Saul, was brought in to see King David.  Mephibosheth was identified as being available.

·       David was told upfront that Mephibosheth was handicapped.  Why might that be a problem in the king’s court?

·       What would initially make us undesirable for being in the court of King Jesus?

·       Vs. 5 – David sent for Mephibosheth. Why does God seek for us?

Romans 3:10-11 - As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: [11] There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

According to Luke 19:10 and 1 John 4:10 why and how did God seek for us.

Luke 19:10  - For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

·       According to 1 John 16:8-11, how does God seek sinners today?

·       How is salvation pictured in the parable of the lost coin found in Luke 15:8-10?

·       According to Mark 16:15 what part do we have in seeking the lost?  Why don’t we take our part more seriously?

HE WAS SAVED – Vss. 6-13

·       Vs. 6 - What do you think Mephibosheth was thinking when he stood before David?

·       What do many unsaved people think when they envision standing before a holy God?  Why is that a good thing?

·       Vs. 7 – How did this pronouncement change

     Mephibosheth’s life?

·       Vs. 8 - Why was Mephibosheth so flabbergasted about David’s pronouncement?

·       What is so amazing about God’s grace to us?

·       What did Mephibosheth have to do to make David’s offer of grace his?

·       What do we do to make God’s offer of grace ours?

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

·       Why is it that people actually refuse God’s offer of grace?

·       Vss. 9-11 – Instructions were given to fulfill David’s promise.

HE WAS A SON – Vss. 7, 13

·       Sitting at the king’s table meant that David was treating Mephibosheth like his own son.

·       John 1:12-13 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

·       Romans 8:15-17 - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. [16] The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: [17] And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

·       What privileges do we have as God’s children?

·       How do we sometimes fail to act like God’s children?

Psalm 42:1-5

SEEKING GOD

MY DESIRE – Vss. 1-2

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. [2] My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

MY DISTRESS – Vss. 3-4

My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? [4] When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

MY DEPENDENCE – Vs. 5

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

MARK 11:11-26

PRAYER POWER

Life of Christ #47

This week we see our Lord teaching us something about the power of prayer as he curses a fig tree and teaches lessons on faith and prayer.  The purpose of this message is to encourage us to all be better prayer warriors.

THE PROBLEM OF HYPOCRISY Vss. 11-19

I want us to begin our thoughts with Vs. 11, which happened the day our Lord entered Jerusalem. READ VERSE.

Please note that our Lord, the Son of God, looked all around at all things in the temple.  This was a searching gaze. This was an evaluating gaze.  As the Son of God, He had every right to look and evaluate.  Why? It was His temple.  A temple built for and dedicated to Him, as God.

Where is the temple of God today?  It is our bodies.  We are the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Does the Lord Jesus evaluate us, His temple today?

Yes.

Does the Lord Jesus have a right to evaluate what we do in our bodies, and direct us to do better?

Yes.

What should be our attitude as Christians towards our Lord when he wants to evaluate us?

Psalm 139:23-24

Our desire should be that our Lord would search us, know us, and correct us.

Vs. 12 – After spending the night in Bethany our Lord returns to Jerusalem and he’s hungry.

Vs. 13 – Jesus saw a fig tree having leaves.

The early figs did not usually appear this early, but when a tree has leaves it usually has figs as well.

Mark says that there was nothing but leaves, because it was not time for fruit.

Why did Jesus expect fruit?

Because the leaves advertised that there was fruit. The leaves and fruit were normally together.  This tree was guilty of false advertisement. This tree, so to speak, was a hypocrite.

The tree can be, first of all, thought of as a picture of the nation Israel at this time.  Israel went through the motions of religion at the temple.  The Pharisees insisted on strict interpretation of the law. And yet, Israel was not being productive for the Lord.  On more than one occasion, Jesus referred to the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the Jewish leaders. Matthew 15:8-9

We would commit an injustice if we just applied this barren fig tree to Israel and not to people today.  It is always easier to talk faith than to live it.

It is always easier to have the green leaves of verbal testimony without the fruit of righteousness, fruit of soul winning, and fruit of the Spirit.  We must beware of being like the fig tree, advertising a Spirituality that just doesn't exist.

Vs. 14 - Our Lord pronounces judgment on the fig tree.

This is, of course, an object lesson. Our Lord was pronouncing judgment on Israel. Our Lord was also pronouncing judgment on all hypocrisy. Matthew 7:21

How should we Christians deal with our own hypocrisy?

Compare our lives to the Scriptures, when reading or hearing it preached.

Be honest in self-examination.

Confess the sin to God.

Rely on God for the power to change.

Follow the pattern of Ezra. Ezra 7:10

THE PRIORITY OF FAITH Vss. 20-23

Vs. 20 - It is the next day, and they see the same fig tree.

It had already dried up from the roots.

Vs. 21 - You can imagine the shock of all the disciples, who heard the pronouncement on one day, and saw the withered fig tree the next day! Peter, of course, was the one who pointed it out to the Lord Jesus.

Vs. 22 - Jesus is very specific.

To accomplish what seems impossible, faith in God is required.

                Faith is essential.

                Not faith in man.

Not faith in my own ability.

                Not faith in faith.

BUT, FAITH THAT RESTS IN GOD!

Vs. 23 - Our Lord was probably talking more figuratively than literally. Of course, if there was good reason, our Lord could have cast the Mount of Olives into the sea.

The rabbis of that day, referred to a mountain as an impossible situation.

A Christian can deal with an absolutely impossible situation, and see God work.

But how can we possibly muster enough faith to handle impossible situations?

What I believe that God will do must be based on God's Word.

As I study God's word and believe it, that's when mountains will be removed! Romans 10:17

THE PROMISE OF ANSWERED PRAYER Vs. 24

Vs. 24 - Here is a great promise!

Faith and Prayer go together.

Our pronouncements of faith are based on our prayers of faith.

Notice how broad the scope of our prayers - What things soever. Or, "Whatsoever"

Notice it is based on our desires.

The condition here is that our desires need to be right in order for us to receive answers to our prayers.

We must pray with the right motives. James 4:2-3

Not only must we pray with the right motives but according to the will of God.

1 John 5:14-15 -  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

When we pray, we must believe that we will receive what we are asking for.

How many times have we prayed for things and not really believed that God would answer?

How many times have we prayed and have not thought about whether God would answer or not.  I think that most times we do not think about whether God will answer or not!

Let's face it, to have faith in God, we must believe He's going to answer when we ask!

THE PREREQUISITE OF FORGIVENESS Vss. 25-26

As Christians, no sin will keep us out of Heaven.

However, sin will hinder us from having our prayers answered.

One of the great sins is unforgiveness.

Christians hold grudges, refusing to forgive others.

As a result there sin of unforgiveness keeps God from forgiving them, and having their prayers answered. Psalm 66:18

Don’t let unforgiveness rob you of joy or of answers to prayer.

THE UNUSUAL

Introduction: Give examples of people who did unusual things.

JESUS DID THE UNUSUAL Vss. 27-30

He reached out to someone who was despised.

JESUS SOUGHT THE UNUSUAL Vss. 31-34

He made doing the will of God more important than food.

JESUS COMMANDED THE UNUSUAL Vss. 35-38

He caused the disciples to look at the fields white with harvest.

He implied that they needed to be "reapers" of the harvest.

1 Corinthians 16:2

A PATTERN FOR GIVING

GIVING IS PLANNED - The first day of the week.

Of course, they were to set it aside until the offering would be received.  Most churches receive the offering weekly.  My wife, Dottie and I have discovered that our giving is best done when we plan it.

The Lord's money is taken out of our pay first!

GIVING IS PERSONAL - Every one of you.

GIVING IS PROPORTIONAL - As God has prospered.

You might want to point out that some only get paid once every month or every two weeks.  They are to give when they receive it, and not to be concerned about the weeks when they do not give.

We are to give as God has prospered us.  I personally believe that the Christian should begin his giving by tithing to the local church.

For more guidelines for giving, see 2 Corinthians 8-9. Especially pay attention to 2 Corinthians 9:6-11

COLOSSIANS 1:12-20

A COMPARISON – PM – 10/29/06

Retype of 12/31/00

It is all too easy for us to forget just how wonderful our Lord and Savior is!  So, using Colossians 1:12-20, I want us to make a comparison between Him and us!

Hopefully this will help us to appreciate the Lord Jesus

WE'RE SINNERS. HE'S SAVIOR Vss. 12-14

Paul was explaining to the Colossians how he prayed for them.

One of the things Paul prayed was that the Colossians would be thankful.

Vs. 12 - Those who are going to Heaven are saints. God in his wonderful plan devised a way, that we as sinners, could be made meet or fit for a Heavenly inheritance.

Vs. 13 - Why did we need God to find a way to make us fit for Heaven?  Because of our sins, we are actually born as members of the Kingdom of darkness.

It is important to note that at salvation we were delivered or translated from one kingdom to another.

The word "translated" means deported from one kingdom to another. Often defeated people are deported. We were deported as well when we trusted Christ.  But our deportation is really a promotion from this black kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of God's dear Son, the Lord Jesus. This is a kingdom of light and life.  If we have a new kingdom, we also have a new king, and that's the Lord Jesus Himself. Philippians 3:20

Vs. 14 - Here is the reason why we as Christians have been transported from the Kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of light.

We have redemption!

Redemption means to pay a ransom and set one free!

Our debt was a sin debt!

Someone had to pay the debt, the ransom to set us free. Christ did this. Romans 5:6-9

It is this redemption that has set us free and transported us from the Kingdom of Darkness to the Kingdom of Christ!

Of course, the redemption that has made us free has made us free now!

We don't have to wait to go to heaven in order to be free from sin's power. John 8:36, Romans 6:14

And we are told in this verse 14 that with this redemption comes forgiveness. Colossians 2:13-14

WE'RE CREATURES, HE'S CREATOR Vss. 15-17

Colossians 1:15 - Who is the image of the invisible God

God is not playing "hide and seek".

God is not trying to hide from mankind.

He wants mankind to know Him.

The way we know what God is like is by knowing what Jesus is like. Jesus is the "image" of the invisible God.

An image is an exact representation and revelation. John 1:14, Hebrews 1:3, John 14:8-9

He that has seen Jesus has seen the Father.

Jesus shows us a God who is compassionate, righteous, holy, merciful, loving and a host of other things! Study Jesus Christ and you study God. Know Jesus Christ, and you know God.

Colossians 1:15

Some people believe that this verse teaches that Jesus is a created being because it calls him "firstborn".

That just isn't so!

Charles Erdman said - "'Firstborn' here means two things: priority in time and supremacy in place or position. Christ existed before the Creation, but He held the rank commonly assigned to the 'firstborn', the rank of eminence and dominion." Charles R. Erdman, The Epistles of Paul to the Colossians and to Philemon, (Grand Rapids, Michigan, Baker Book House, 1966), p. 52

H. A. Ironside - "It is not that he is himself created, but he is the head of all that has been created." H. A. Ironside, Lectures on Colossians, (Neptune, NJ, Loizeaux Brothers, Inc. 1929), p. 42

Micah 5:2 - But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Vs. 16 - Please understand one thing. You exist because of Jesus Christ! He created all things!

John 1:3

Vs. 17 - In this verse we see Jesus' stability. He is before all things.

Yes, he is before all things in rank, He's King, but here the principle is time.  He is stable because He existed before creation, before His birth, before His death, before His resurrection. And notice the verb is in the present tense, not the past tense. Jesus continues to exist!

Just think. It is the eternal Son of God, who guarantees us eternal life. We can't lose.

Another way we see Jesus stability is because he holds all things together.

Jesus Christ does not change!

Hebrews 13:8 - Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

WE'RE SAINTS, HE'S SOVEREIGN Vss. 18-20

In these verses, Paul is talking about Christ and the Church.

The church is made up of "saints".

A saint is a person who has been set apart by God for God, based on the person's faith in Christ.

Vs. 18 - We have many body parts.

Each body part is distinct.

Each body part has a job, and each body part is important.

The church is made up of many parts, but there is only one head. That is the Lord Jesus Christ.

The word "head" in Greek can mean source and origin as well as "leader" and "ruler".

Jesus Christ is the source of the church.

He died for it. He arose for it. He ascended into Heaven for it, and He lives today for it.

Jesus Christ is the leader and ruler of the church.

The local church will either be a phenomenal success or a phenomenal failure.  Whether this church is a failure or a success depends on us. If our lives are successful, the church will be successful. If our lives are failures, our church will be a failure.

Success or failure centers on our recognition of the truths we are studying.

If I recognize His headship, it means Christ tells me what to do!

If I recognize His headship, that He is my sovereign, my King.

I let Him live through me.

As my body is dependent upon the head to tell it what to do, and for the motivations and strength to do it, so we are to be dependent on our Spiritual Head to control us. John 15:5

Don't expect this church to be successful unless you are personally willing to recognize His headship.

"who is the beginning" - Jesus Christ has priority in time and He is the originator of the church.

The church was His idea.  He has every right to tell us what to do!

The firstborn from the dead .  We saw this word "firstborn" a few minutes ago.  He is first in rank over creation because He created it. He is first in rank in resurrection because He arose to die no more.

that in all things he might have the preeminence - Another word would be "supreme" or "first place."

God's plan for you and I as Christians is that Jesus Christ would be supreme, having first place, being #1, having the preeminence.

Make sure that Jesus Christ is supreme commander in your life!

Fullness means "the sum total of all the divine power and attributes". To dwell here means to be at home permanently. All dive power and attributes are "at home" or comfortable in Jesus Christ.

John 1:16 refers to Christians!

He lives inside of us.

The deity of Christ lives inside of you and me. We are the temples of God! 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

I have the fullness of Christ living inside of me.  If I don't allow Him to fill and control me, I will have no Spiritual power or impact.

Vs. 20 -He made peace at the cross through His blood!

I am no longer God's enemy because of sin, but I am God's child.

All things are reconciled to Him.

He will rule.

He is my peace right now!

WE'RE SINNERS, HE'S SAVIOR Vss. 12-14
WE'RE CREATURES, HE'S CREATOR Vss. 15-17
WE'RE SAINTS (the church), HE'S SOVEREIGN Vss. 18-20

Jesus is your creator.

Is Jesus your Savior?

Is Jesus your Sovereign?
