IT’S EASY

2 Samuel 11

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man

Lesson #6 – A COMPLETE LESSON

·       When asked, please react to the article that Pastor is going to read. You may read the article yourself at http://www.baptiststandard.com/postnuke/index.php?module=htmlpages&func=display&pid=757

·       Why do you think that sexual sin is so prevalent, even among Christian men?

·       Why did God include the story of David and Bathsheba in the Bible?

We return to our study of David.

David, who killed the giant, Goliath, with a stone and a slingshot…

David who was called a man after God's heart…

David who often walked with God…

David who was the sweet psalm singer of Israel…

David who wrote many psalms including The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want…

However in 1 Samuel 11 we find a picture of a side of David we'd like to forget.  We’d like to forget David’s dark side, because we are capable of having one too!

There are some things mentioned in this chapter that David found to be easy.  These same things, if we are not careful, we will find to be easy as well.

IT’S EASY TO GET LAZY – Vs. 1

·       David was between 50-55 years old. His kingdom was well established.  He had been a king for about 20 years.

·       Although some think that David did nothing wrong to stay back, I feel that David would have been wiser to be active with his men.

·       What reasons might David have had to stay behind?

·       How might have a king’s lifestyle made David a little soft or lazy?

·       Although salvation is free, Spiritual warfare is work!

2 Timothy 2:3-4 - Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. [4] No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

1 Timothy 6:12 - Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Ephesians 6:10-11 - Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. [11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

·       What are some indicators that we are getting lazy as Christians?

·       Why is getting lazy in the Christian life dangerous?

IT’S EASY TO LUST – Vss. 2-3

·       Vs. 2 – David’s sin was not taking a nap in the heat of the day.  He probably had a tent on the top of the palace where it was cooler. I think it might have been a common practice.

·       Bathsheba was bathing. Was she to blame at all for David’s sin?  How can Christian women help men avoid lust?

·       Vs. 3 – How do we know that David was guilty of lust, and what subtle message do you think the servant might have been trying to convey with his answer about Bathsheba’s identity?

·       What do you think of the statement, “It’s okay to look, just don’t touch?”

Matthew 5:27-28 - Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: [28] But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

·       What are some practical ways to avoid the sin of lust?

1 Corinthians 10:12-14 - Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

IT’S EASY TO LET GO – Vs. 4

·       Scripture does not dwell on this sin like they would in the movies.  David simply gave in and did it. As a man with many wives and concubines, he had heightened sexual interest.  It was easy for him to take the next step.

·       The more we dwell on committing a sin the more likely we are to take the next step.  Why?

James 1:13-15 - Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: [14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. [15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

IT’S EASY TO LOOK OUT FOR #1 – Vss. 5-25

·       Vs. 5 – What can we always count on when we sin?

Numbers 32:23 -…and be sure your sin will find you out.

Colossians 3:25 - But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

·       How do we know that God loved David?

·       What would have been the best way for David to handle the pregnancy?

·       Vss. 6-8 - Why do we, like David, choose to cover things up?

·       Vss. 9-13 – At this point in David’s life, Uriah showed himself to be a better man than David?  How?

·       What truth(s) about God was David choosing to ignore?

·       Vss. 14-15 – David went to extremes to cover up sin.  Why should this concern us?

·       Vss. 16-24 – The saddest thing about this cover-up is that innocent people were adversely affected.  This should be “food for thought” for us.

·       Vs. 25 – David was guilty of another sin here. What was it?

IT’S EASY TO LIVE A LIE – Vss. 26-27

·       What lie was David living?

·       In what ways do many Christian men live lies?

·       What is the thought provoking conclusion to this story?

·       How should this chapter affect us?

HOW DO I RESPOND WHEN THREATENED?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 5 – Nehemiah 4 – A COMPLETE LESSON

·        What are some of the types of personal threats we receive?

·        What are some of the biggest threats to progress that churches face?

·        Why do threats occur?

·        What are some of the responses we can have when we feel that we are threatened personally or as a group?

Things were going well for Nehemiah’s wall building efforts, when suddenly there were threats to the well being of the project.  These threats came from outsiders who didn’t want Nehemiah and his friends to succeed.  Nehemiah teaches us some proper responses for the times when we feel threatened.

WALK – BE PRAYERFUL! – Vss. 1-6

(  The “loyal opposition” included several people.  Those named were Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian. 2:10, 19.

(  Sanballat was evidently governor of Syria, and Tobiah was governor of Ammon. Geshem appears to be an Arabian king.

(  According to Nehemiah 2:10, why were these people opposed to Nehemiah?

(  Why do you think these people were specifically opposed to the rebuilding of Jerusalem?

(  The basic weapon used in these verses is ridicule and sarcasm.

(  We are vulnerable to the attacks of the tongue.  Why?  How can they slow God’s work? Consider Proverbs 15:1-4 and James 3:1-13.

(  We never like being the victims of ridicule and sarcasm.  But we must be careful not to “dish it out” as well.  Matthew 7:1-5, 12, Romans 12:14, 14:4

(  Vss. 4-6 - Nehemiah took the right approach.  He prayed and continued the project. Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7

(  Why was Nehemiah so harsh against his enemies?

(  Vs. 6 – “The people had a mind to work.”  Nehemiah prayed, evidently the verbal attacks were ignored, and the project reached half its height.

WATCH – BE PERCEPTIVE – Vss. 7-15

¯   When is it a legitimate time to cease work on a project?

¯   Vss. 7-8 – This alliance of opposition against the Jews was formidable.  In fact the different groups opposed actually had Jerusalem surrounded!

¯   Vs. 10 – The opposition was planning to attack at a time when many were discouraged. Why was the timing of an attack crucial to its success?

¯   Vss. 11-12 – Word came that a surprise attack was planned.  Have you ever been “broad-sided” when trying to do ministry?  How did the surprise of it hurt you?

¯   Vss. 9, 13 – Work stopped because there was an imminent threat.  Why did Nehemiah group the defense by families?

¯   Vs. 14 – When is it appropriate to give a “pep talk”?  Hebrews 3:13-14, 10:24-25

¯   Vs. 15 – When the imminent threat had passed then they went back to work.

¯   Watching is an important part of the Christian Life. Mark 14:35-37, Titus 2:11-13,

       1 Peter 4:7

WAR – BE PREPARED! – Vss. 16-23

ñ   How do watches, war, and work go together?

ñ   What did Nehemiah do in this passage that was wise? Why did he do it?

ñ   The parallel to the Christian life is obvious.  As we labor in the kingdom, we must be prepared to fight! Ephesians 6:11-18

WORK – BE PRODUCTIVE!

~   In spite of the threats, Nehemiah and the people kept working, thus defeating the intentions of the opposition.

~   We must remember that threats are never to hinder our work.  If we have to shut down temporarily to fix a problem, let’s do so. If we have to take precautions, let’s do so. But, ultimately, let’s continue the work!

~   Proverbs 13:4 - The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

~   Colossians. 3:23 - And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

MATTHEW 22:15-22

THE THINGS THAT ARE GOD’S

Life of Christ #48

FOR A COPY OF THE POWERPOINT THAT GOES WITH THIS MESSAGE AND THE COMPLETE NOTES, WRITE AND ASK FOR BOTH.

We are continuing our study in the Life of Christ.  In past weeks, we have seen Jesus enter the city of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  Jesus presented Himself as Israel’s king, the Messiah. Although there was a welcome reception outwardly, the leaders of Israel rejected Him. They did not want Jesus as king.

Jesus examined the temple and then went back to Bethany for the night. The next day as he approached Jerusalem he was hungry and saw a hypocritical fig tree, advertising fruit and having none, and he cursed it.  That day Jesus cleansed the temple.  The next day Jesus came again to Jerusalem and when the disciples called his attention to the shriveled up fig tree which he had cursed the day before.

Jesus then gave one of His great lessons on prayer. Mark 11:22-24

On this same day, the chief priests and elders challenged his authority. After Jesus responded to their question, He gave a series of parables that condemned the leaders of Israel, and the religious “right” of the day, the Pharisees.  The problem the Pharisees had was their hypocrisy.

Vs. 15 - After hearing these scathing parables, the Pharisees had a meeting.  They wanted to destroy Jesus.  They wanted to ruin His reputation. They wanted to see Him dead.

Jesus was the best speaker whoever lived. He was and is God!  The Pharisees mistakenly thought that they could trip up Jesus in His Words, like politicians do today. If they could entangle Jesus in His own they could accuse Him and have him censored, and perhaps even killed.

Vs. 16 – The Pharisees sent some of their disciples, men who were training to become leading Pharisees.

We are not sure why they didn’t go themselves, but we can speculate.  Perhaps because they wanted to trick Jesus they didn’t want Him to recognize the people that were being sent. So, they sent men he wouldn’t recognize as Pharisees.

They were trying to be deceitful.

They also joined forces with another faction, the Herodians. Now this is a strange combination. The Herodians were followers of King Herod, a Roman vassal.  The Herodians were supportive of taxes that helped keep Herod in power. The Pharisees hated Roman domination, and hated taxes.

Neither the Pharisees nor the Herodians had time for Jesus.

The Pharisees joined forces so that whatever answer Jesus gave to their clever question, somebody could accuse Him.

If Jesus answered one way, the Pharisees would accuse Him before the Jews.  If He answered another way, the Herodians, sympathetic to the Roman government, would accuse Him before that government.

Vs. 16 - So these men come to Jesus and begin with flattery. They pretend to be sincere men seeking an answer from one that was true, taught the word of God and didn’t care what men thought or said.

Vs. 17 - Their question was about a poll tax or a head tax levied by Rome on all its citizens.  The Romans provided many benefits and services as a result of the taxes, but taxation was heavy.  They were asking if it was lawful for religious Jews to pay that tax.

It was a clever question.  The common Jew hated being in subjection to Rome, and hated paying taxes to Rome.  If Jesus said it was right to pay the tax, then the Pharisees would accuse Jesus. If Jesus said it was wrong to pay the tax the Herodians would go to the Roman authorities and probably have Him arrested.

Vs. 18 – These men acted like righteous, sincerely religious men, but Jesus as God, saw right through their hypocrisy.

And by the way, Jesus also sees through our hypocrisy today.  We can fool people, pretending to be what we are not, but we can’t fool God!  So Jesus called them what they were, hypocrites!

Vs. 19 – Jesus asks for a denarius, a day’s wage for a common laborer and the silver coin minted by the emperors to pay their tax.  It had the emperor’s picture on it.

Vs. 20 – Jesus asked whose picture was on the coin.

Vs. 21 - What was Jesus saying?  It was Caesar’s picture on the coin, give to Caesar the things that are Caesars. The taxes that were due to the government were to be paid.  God had put government in charge for the sake of order therefore, the government was to be paid.  Romans 13:1-7

So, Jesus was saying give to government what government deserves.  After all, the government is ordained of God.  But then He sees, “Render to God the things that are God’s.”

God is to be given what is His!  Of course, if it ever comes down to a choice between obeying God and obeying the government, God is to be obeyed!

Vs. 22 - The argument of Jesus was rock solid!  It could not be denied. In fact His accusers were amazed that He gave an answer with which nobody could legitimately argue.

As Warren Wiersbe said – “Caesar’s image was on the coin. God’s image is on man.” Warren Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, (New Testament) Volume 1, (Wheaton Illinois, Victor Books, 1989) p. 80

Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Because we are God’s we should give to God the things that are His!  That leads us to the question of the morning, “What are the things that are God’s?”

What are the things that belong to God?
