A GOOD FRIEND

Various Texts

David: A Man’s Man, God’s Man

Lesson #7 – A COMPLETE LESSON

·       If you could only have one friend, who would you choose? Why?

·       Let’s make a list of the qualities of a good friend.

·       Why is honesty an important quality in friendship?

·       Why is it sometimes hard for people in authority, such as a king or a president to have good friends?

·       Is it harder to be friends with an authority figure like a boss, a parent, or a pastor?

David knew something about friendship from his relationship with Jonathan.  Another friend was David’s “pastor” or spiritual advisor, the prophet, Nathan. Nathan proved himself to be a faithful friend.

HE CORRECTED - 1 Chronicles 17

·       Have you ever spoken in haste, and then discovered that what you said was the wrong thing? What did you do about it?

·       Vss. 1-2 – Why is it easy to think that something that sounds good is the will of God?

·       Why is something that sounds good not always the will of God?

·       Vss. 3-15 – How do you feel when you discover you’ve given someone wrong information?

·       Why is it important for us to correct misinformation when we give it out?

·       Do you think that such corrections will help or hinder a friendship, and why?

·       What do these verses tell you about the will of God?

·       Vss. 16-27 – How does David set a good example?

HE CONFRONTED – 2 Samuel 12:1-14

·       Why is it difficult to confront friends with their faults?

·       Why would we want to confront a friend with his faults?

·       How should we go about confronting a friend with his faults?

Galatians 6:1 - Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

·       What did Nathan risk by confronting David?  What do we risk when we confront a friend?

·       Vss. 1-7 – Why was the story an effective tool in helping to convict David?

·       Why did Nathan know how to approach David? What does that teach us?

·       Vss. 7-12 – What lessons do we learn about God, sin, and discipline in these verses?

·       Vss. 13-14 – There will be times when we are the ones being confronted by a friend.  How should we react?

·       Psalm 51, which was written for this occasion by David, indicates that David’s confession of sin and repentance was real.

·       Vss. 15-23 – Why didn’t God change his mind concerning the life of this child?

HE COMFORTED – 2 Samuel 12:24-25

·       How might have Nathan been personally disappointed in David?

·       Sometimes we find it harder to forgive and move on than God does. Why?

·       Why should those who confront people, as Nathan did, be the same ones to comfort after things are dealt with?

·       Nathan brought comfort and a “nickname” from God. Jedidiah means “Beloved of the Lord”.

·       What does this nickname tell you about the character of God?

·       In what ways might we be able to comfort a person who has confessed and forsaken sin?

·       What are some other instances when our friends will need comfort?

HE COOPERATED – 1 Kings 1

·       David was about 70 years old and at the end of his life.

·       Nathan was perhaps around the same age.

·       Nathan was aware of David’s (and God’s) plan for Solomon to be the next king.

·       Vss. 5-9 - There was a plan to usurp David’s throne by one of Solomon’s half brothers, Adonijah.

·       Vss. 10-40 - Nathan cooperated with his friend David by cooperating with Bathsheba and those loyal to David and Solomon.  The end result was that David commanded that Solomon be anointed king.

·       Why is it important that we look out for the well-being of our friends?

·       What are some kinds of instances when our friends will especially need our help?

Proverbs 27:10 - Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

Proverbs 17:17 - A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

IS MY TEAM IN TACT?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 6 – Nehemiah 5 – A COMPLETE LESSON

·        Consider John 13:34-35.  How obedient is the 21st Century Church to Christ’s Command?

·        How has obedience to that command affected our church?

·        How can a lack of love and a failure to deal with internal strife hurt the cause of Christ?

·        Remember, when Satan can not hurt the cause of Christ with attacks from outside the “body”, he will work from within.

Nehemiah 5 tells us about an internal crisis as the walls are being constructed.  This problem threatened to undermine the whole project.  Nehemiah worked quickly to solve the problem. Here are the steps he took to insure that his team would be in tact.

HE WAS ATTENTIVE – Vss. 1-5

þ   I get the impression that Nehemiah was a good listener.  How will the quality of being a good listener help us in times of crisis?

þ   Gene Getz sums up the problem this way:

  1. “First, some were running out of food. ‘We, our sons and our daughters, are many,’ they complained; ‘therefore let us get grain that we may eat and live.’ (vs. 2)
  2. “Second, many who had enough to eat were putting food on their tables by mortgaging their fields, their vineyards, and their homes. (vs. 3)
  3. “Third, others – in order to keep their property – were borrowing money from their Jewish brothers to pay taxes to King Artaxerxes (see vs. 4). The problem was compounded when those who borrowed money were charged exorbitant interest rates by their own Jewish brothers.
  4. “Fourth – and the worst of all – when their crops failed, their creditors took away their property and sold their children into slavery (see vs. 5). These people were left in a hopeless state. There was no way out. ‘We are helpless,’ they cried out to Nehemiah, ‘because our fields and vineyards belong to others.’ (vs. 5)”

Gene Getz, Men of Character, Nehemiah – Becoming a Disciplined Leader, (Nashville, Tennessee, Broadman and Holman Publishers, 1995) p. 113

þ   Why do you think Nehemiah specifically mentioned the women in verse 1?  Should they have spoken out, or let their husbands handle it? Why?

þ   In what ways would this internal strife have affected the building of the walls?

HE WAS ANGRY – Vs. 6

L    Was Nehemiah’s anger justified? Leviticus 25:25-27, 29-42, Deuteronomy 23:19

L    How can we tell when our anger is justified?

L    What have you seen happen in churches when the anger people expressed was not justified? How was it dealt with?

L    How should we deal with people who express unjustified anger?

HE WAS REFLECTIVE – Vs. 7

?     Nehemiah should be commended. Why? James 1:19-20

?     Ephesians 4:26-27 - Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: [27] Neither give place to the devil.

?     How can we sin when we are justifiably angry?

?     What could have happened if Nehemiah had not confronted the problem?

?     It is possible that Nehemiah was following the procedure laid out in Matthew 18.  It appears that he privately rebuked the nobles.  When he got no response, he held a public meeting.

HE WAS CONFRONTATIONAL – Vss. 8-11

!        Nehemiah publicly confronted the nobles with their sin.  How do we know when it is time to confront someone privately and then, if necessary, publicly? Galatians 6:1, Matthew 18:15-19

!        Why do most churches loathe church discipline?

!        What was Nehemiah’s argument in verse 8?

!        Vs. 9 – How is the cause of Christ hurt when “sin in the camp” is not dealt with?

       1 Corinthians 5:1-2

!        Vss. 11-12 – This story has a happy ending.  Think of how many happy endings we deprive ourselves of when we do not confront.

HE WAS INSISTENT – Vss. 12-13

ý    Why did Nehemiah call in the priests and have them make an oath?

ý    When is it good for Christians to make a public commitment of something they are promising to do?  What does this accomplish?

ý    What was Nehemiah saying in verse 13?  Why were his actions and words effective?

ý    Why is it hard to hold people accountable when they make a commitment?  How should we go about doing it?

HE WAS THE EXAMPLE – Vss. 10, 14-19

þ     Vs. 10 – Nehemiah and his associates were rescuing the Jews who were in financial difficulty.

þ     Vss. 14-18 - Notice that Nehemiah did not require the payments and food paid to previous governors.  Notice his reason in verse 15.  If we truly fear the Lord, how will we treat other Christians, even those we don’t like?

þ     Vs. 19 – How did God answer Nehemiah’s request?  What can we be assured of when we as Christians do what is right?

ADDENDUM

Remember that we are only effective as a team if we are keeping short accounts with each other.  If anything is festering within the ranks, it needs to be dealt with.  Love resolves problems.  It does not overlook them.

Psalm 89:7-18

WHY REVERENCE?

Psalm 89:7 - God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.

Most commentators think that this verse is referring to a Heavenly scene with the Angels being the “holy ones” or saints mentioned here.  And this is probably true.

But if God is to be reverenced by all those that are about Him that would also apply to those of us who know the Lord Jesus as our Savior. We are “about him” because we are the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 6:19

In Psalm 9:7-18 I found some of the reasons why Christians should reverence God.

WE SHOULD REVERENCE GOD BECAUSE HE IS STRONG – Vss. 8-10, 13

Vs. 8 – Nobody is stronger than God!

Psalm 89:9 - Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

There are at least two times in the Bible when God stilled the ragging sea.

·        When God parted the Red Sea so the Children of Israel could go across.

·        When Jesus stood up in the boat and calmed the Sea of Galilee.

And Jesus still calms the ragging seas of our anxiety today, if we but let Him. He is strong enough to give us peace through any difficulty.

Vs. 10 – Rahab is a term used to refer to Egypt.

Hebert Lockyer says that “Rahab” means both “Strength” and “pride”. Heberbert Lockyer, Psalms: A Devotional Commentary (Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids Michigan, 1993), pgs. 300-301

Egypt was both a strong and proud nation.

But God is stronger.

The same sea God calmed to protect Israel, was the same sea that was unleashed on Pharaoh and his army.

And just think.  No enemy of God can stand against His strength.  Even Satan is no match for God and is doomed to defeat!

Psalm 89:13 - Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

God is pictured with a mighty arm, strong hand, and a powerful right hand.

Our problem is we don’t remember how strong God is when we worship.  And we don’t remember how strong God is when we face troubles. Jeremiah 32:17,

WE SHOULD REVERENCE GOD BECAUSE HE OWNS EVERYTHING – Vss. 11-12

Psalm 89:11 - The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

How much should we worship God because He owns all the stars and the planets!

And how much more should we worship God because He owns the whole world.

God particularly owns the Christian. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Psalm 89:12 - The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

Tabor and Hermon were mountains east and west of Israel. So, God was saying that everything, going east, west, north, south, was created by Him.

WE SHOULD REVERENCE GOD BECAUSE OF HIS CHARACTER – Vs. 14

Psalm 89:14 - Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

The word justice means “righteousness”.

God is righteous.

He can always be counted on to do what is right.

Because God is righteous, his judgments are accurate.

When the wicked are judged at the Great White Throne, they will be judged righteously. Revelation 20:12

When you and I are judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ we will be judged righteously. 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 4:5

I am so glad there is balance with God.

Yes, there is righteous judgment.

But part of God’s character is also mercy and truth, or we may use the words “love and faithfulness”.

WE SHOULD REVERENCE GOD BECAUSE OF THE JOY HE BRINGS – Vss. 15-16

Psalm 89:15 - Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.

The Christians who know the joyful sound of worship are happy people.

The Christians who know the joyful sound of worship don’t just worship with a congregation on Sunday. They worship God continually. Psalm 89:16, Ephesians 5:18-20, Hebrews 13:15

Notice please that if you reverence God enough to worship God, God’s smile will be upon you.

they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of thy countenance.

WE SHOULD REVERENCE GOD BECAUSE OF HIS HELP – Vss. 17-18

Psalm 89:17 - For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

What true strength we have comes from God. Psalm 27:1

Our horn shall be exalted – Albert Barnes said, “The horn is a symbol of power... The meaning here is, that their power had been derived from God; or that all which contributed to their exaltation and honor in the world, had been derived from him.” Barnes’ Notes on the Old Testament

Psalm 89:18 - For the Lord is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

What better defense can we ask for than to be protected by God?

Mark 4:35-41

STORMY WEATHER!

There will be storms in life.  Make sure that you are equipped to face

them when they come.

THE PASSENGER WITH A PLAN Vss. 35-36

1. Make sure Jesus is a passenger in your boat. Vss. 36

2. Make sure that Jesus you are following Jesus' plans for your life.

Vs. 35

THE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED A PANIC Vss. 37-38

1. Storms are real, dangerous, and scary. Vss.37

2. We should call on the Lord in the storms, but not in the panicky

way which the disciples did. They even questioned his care. That

seems easy to do when things are not going well. Vs. 38

THE PRIORITY (FAITH) THAT PRODUCES PEACE Vss. 39-41

1. Peace came when Jesus stilled the waters. Vs. 39. Jesus does not

always remove the problem, but will give you peace through the

problem.

2. Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith. It is faith that

keeps us from panic. Vs. 40

3. The disciples had a new appreciation for the ability of the Lord.

We will also, as we trust Him. Vs.41

1 Peter 1:1-2

ESTABLISHING OUR IDENTITY

"The few, the proud, the Marines"

"Just do it." - Nike

"At Ford, quality is job 1."

"We love to fly and it shows."

Dodger "Blue" and Yankee "Pinstripes"

"Fly the friendly skies."

The above slogans give identity to certain products, teams or companies. Just as it is important for companies to have an identity,

it is important for us who are Christians to understand our identity.

In 1 Peter 1:1-2, Peter shows us our identity.

WE ARE A TRAVELING PEOPLE Vs. 1

We are strangers, sojourners, or pilgrims. Philippians 3:20, Hebrews                                                                                                                                                                                            13:14

WE ARE A CHOSEN PEOPLE Vs. 2a

"Elect according to the foreknowledge of God..."

WE ARE A SEPARATED PEOPLE Vs. 2b

(We are separated unto obedience and cleansing.)

WE ARE A BLESSED PEOPLE Vs. 2c
