JOURNEY OF FAITH

Luke 1:26-56

JOURNEYS WITH MARY - Lesson #1 of 4

A COMPLETE LESSON

·       What is the most significant journey or trip you have ever made, and why was it significant?

·       Why do journeys need not be long in order to be significant?

·       The most significant step of faith you ever took was to trust Jesus as your Savior.  Name another step of faith that God has led you to take.

·       How is doing something by faith a “journey”?

As we approach the Christmas holiday we want to examine the four journeys that Mary made found in Luke 1-2.  They are:

1.     The Journey of Faith – Luke 1:26-56

2.     The Journey of Fruition – Luke 2:1-20

3.     The Journey of Fulfillment – Luke 2:21-39

4.     The Journey towards the Future – Luke 2:40-52

The first journey that Mary made was from Nazareth to “the hill country”.  For her it was a journey of faith, accepting what she had been told by the Angel Gabriel as true.  So often our journeys in this life are journeys of faith. We must take God at His word, and move forward believing that what He has said is true.

MARY’S CONVERSATION – Vss. 26-37

·       Vs. 26 - Nazareth was not the “garden spot” of Israel.  In fact, it is not even mentioned in the Old Testament.  It was a mixed city, of Jews, Gentiles, and soldiers.  The city did not have a good reputation.

·       Vs. 27 – How do you think Mary was like thousands of other poor teenage girls that lived in Israel at the time?

·       Vs. 28 – Why do you think Gabriel greeted Mary the way he did?

·       Notice that Mary was blessed “among” women, not “above” women.  How do some people wrongly view Mary?  How should we rightly view Mary?

·       Vs. 29 – What troubled Mary?

·       Vs. 30 – Mary wasn’t to fear, but to be assured that she had found favor with God. How have we Christians found favor with God?  Why is faith necessary to enjoy that favor?

·       Vss. 31-32 – How was Jesus great?  Notice His deity.  When does He get the throne?

·       Vs. 34 – Do you think Mary’s question was a question of doubt or simply trying to understand?  Why?

·       Vss. 35-37 – How was Mary’s pregnancy different from Elizabeth’s pregnancy?  How were they similar?  What was the Angel’s point in mentioning Elizabeth?

·       Vs. 37 – What impossible things have you seen God do?

·       What is the basis for believing that God will do the impossible in our lives?

MARY’S CONFIDENCE – Vss. 38-40

·       Vs. 38 – What was the biggest problem Mary would have had with this pregnancy?

·       Besides Mary’s faith in verse 38 we see her submission. Why do submission and faith go together?

·       Can and should Mary’s faith be duplicated?

·       Vss. 39-40 – How was the journey Mary took an indication of her faith?

·       How will our actions sometimes be an indication of our faith?

MARY’S CONFIRMATION - Vss. 41-45

·       Vss. 39-41 – Mary was to receive confirmation of her faith through the inspired words of Elizabeth. Elizabeth would have known only a little of what was going on. It was the control of the Holy Spirit that allowed her to say what she said.

·       Vss. 42-43 – If you were Mary, how would you have reacted to Elizabeth’s statements?  How do we tell that these statements were prodded by God?

·       Verses 41 and 44 are fulfillments of the promise given in verse 15.

·       Vs. 45 - Why do you think God gave this confirmation to Mary?

·       What are some ways in which God confirms our faith?

4. MARY’S CONCERT – Vss. 46-56

·       Vs. 46 – What specific reasons did Mary have for magnifying the Lord?  What reasons do we have?

·       Vs. 47 – This verse tells us that Mary was not sinless, as some think.  Why is it important to rejoice in the God of salvation rather than in salvation itself?

·       Vs. 48 - We know why generations have called Mary “blessed”.  In what ways is a believer “blessed”?

·       Vs. 49 – Notice that we praise God for the same two reasons that are mentioned here.

·       Vs. 50 – Who are those who fear him from generation to generation?

·       The statements made in verses 51 through 55 were certainly true in the past.  However, they are probably prophecies stated in the past tense. They are as good as done.

·       How have each of the prophecies in these verses been fulfilled or how will they be fulfilled by Jesus?

·       What lessons about faith have you learned from Mary?

DON’T WAIT

A FUNERAL MESSAGE

When you love someone, you tell them the truth.

And because I love you, I’m going to tell you the truth.

_________ was no boy scout.  He had his faults and yes his sins.

God was very gracious to __________.  He came to know Christ as his Savior in what we might call, “the eleventh hour” or “the last minute”.  In my 31 years of doing funerals, and I’ve done a lot of them, I can only remember one other person besides _____________ who made his decision for Christ at the last minute.

So my message to you this morning is “Don’t Wait”.

DON’T WAIT – YOU MAY NOT GET ANOTHER CHANCE

2 Corinthians 6:2 - …behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Psalm 90:10 - The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

DON’T WAIT – YOU’LL MISS GOD’S BEST

John 10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

DON’T WAIT – YOU MIGHT BE FOOLING YOURSELF.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Matthew 7:21 - Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

IS GOD’S WORD AT THE CENTER OF ALL I DO?

NEHEMIAH – GOD’S MAN IN TIMES OF CRISIS

LESSON # 8 – Nehemiah 8

This lesson on Nehemiah is unique. Instead of my asking a lot of questions, I want you to ask yourself the questions as I share.  Lord willing, we’ll be back to interactive lessons next week.

·        2 Peter 1:12-13 - Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. [13] Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

·        Revelation 2:4-5 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. [5] Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

·        We can’t love the Lord unless we love His word.

·        Jeremiah 15:16  - Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

·        Psalm 138:2 - I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

As others have said, the Book of Nehemiah talks of the rebuilding of the walls and the reinstruction of the people.  After the construction was completed a great assembly was convened.  At the center of this assembly was the Word of God. You and I who deal with the Word all the time must be careful that we do not allow the Word to become stale in our lives. We need to continually be in the Word and allowing the Word to do its work in us. Let’s ask ourselves the following questions:

DO I REQUEST GOD’S WORD? – Vss. 1-2

The people called for Ezra to read the Word of God. They wanted to hear it.

There should be a desire on the part of every Christian to hear God’s love letter to them. Jeremiah 15:16, Matthew 5:6

The ones wanting to hear God’s Word should be men, women, and children who can understand it.

Usually when we think of revival starting we think of the need for prayer.  Besides this, for revival to come we need a REBIBLE!

What level of interest do you really have in the Word of God?  Do you want to read it, study it, and hear it preached and taught?

DO I RESPECT GOD’S WORD? – Vss. 3-6

Vs. 3 - The reading of the Word could be as long as 6 hours; we would start to squirm within 15 minutes!

The people were attentive to God’s Word.  There are reasons we should be attentive.  See Psalm 119:89, 105, Mark 13:31, Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21

Often our priorities are mixed up.  We’d rather do than listen to God.  If we don’t listen, we won’t know what to do.  We often save time if we read the directions first!

Notice that the people stood up in respect to God’s Word. I believe this helped their focus and attention.

Notice that worship preceded reading.  We should not only worship, but request God’s guidance as we read. Psalm 119:18, 27, 125

DO I READ GOD’S WORD?

ð    You can actually read God’s Word and get nothing out of it.

ð    You could be going through the motions.

ð    You could be distracted.

ð    You could be reading with the wrong motive.

ð    Using 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Romans 15:4 as reasons for reading the Bible, you could ask yourself the following questions as you read:

1.     What teaching is found in this passage?

2.     What reproof is found in this passage?

3.     What correction is found in this passage?

4.     What instruction for right living is found in this passage?

5.     What comfort is found in this passage?

DO I RECEIVE GOD’S WORD? – Vss. 7-8

²   Besides reading the Word, we should be open to the preaching and teaching of the

      Word. 2 Timothy 4:2, Ephesians 4:11-12

²   We should be careful not to let sin, anger, or resentment hinder our reception of the

      Word.

²   Notice that the qualities mentioned here point to expository preaching as an ideal

            method for communicating the Word.

²   I must have a sincere desire to learn from the preacher or teacher if I am going to grow

            in the things of God.

DO I REFLECT ON GOD’S WORD?

§   According to verse 3 the people were attentive to the Word.

§   As we’ll see in a moment, they also responded to God’s Word.

§   As the Word was preached, they reflected on its meaning.

§   We are taught to reflect on God’s Word through memorization and meditation upon

            God’s Word.  Consider Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2-3, Psalm 119:11, 97-100, Jeremiah 15:16,

            John 15:4-5

§   In times of crises, your reserve of Scripture will be your stay.

DO I RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD? – Vss. 9-18

¯   Vss. 9-11 - Ezra, Nehemiah, and others had to encourage the people.

¯   There was evidently sincere sorrow for sin and probably repentance. This caused tears.

¯   But it was a day of joy!  The walls were completed, but it was a day when after many years attention was being paid to the Word of God and it was being understood.

¯   Later there would be time for even further examination, but on that day it was time for joy!

¯   Vss. 13-18 tell of the Feast of Tabernacles being celebrated.  It was celebrated out of obedience to the Word of God.  The most important response we can give to God’s Word is obedience! 1 Samuel 15:22-23

DO I REJOICE IN GOD’S WORD? – Vs. 12

¯   There was joy because the Word of God was understood.  We will have similar joy as we understand and obey the Scriptures.

COLOSSIANS 1:20-29

RECONCILIATION

#4 in Colossians Series

Reconciliation - When two people are at odds, differences are resolved and fellowship and friendship are either restored or established for the first time.

There have been times in your life when you needed to be reconciled to someone. Perhaps reconciliation was needed with your parents after you "blew it".  My Dad had every reason to be angry with me when I told someone else I was changing churches and didn't tell him.  But he confronted me, and eventually there was reconciliation.

Sometimes reconciliation has been needed between you and a friend or a brother or sister. Sometimes reconciliation is even needed because we've hurt someone we don't even know such as through a traffic accident.

Our greatest need of reconciliation has been with God.

We are sinners.

We have offended the holy and almighty God!

We do not deserve any of God's blessings.

We do not deserve forgiveness.

We do not deserve a home in heaven. Romans 3:10-18

That's the bad news.

The good news is, of course, that God long ago took the matter of reconciliation into his own hands and has provided that reconciliation to all who will trust His Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins.

We want to consider reconciliation as described by the Apostle Paul in Colossians 1:20-29.  Studying this passage is important because we will see:

THE MEANS OF RECONCILIATION - Vs. 20

Here we see how God provided a way of "peace" between Himself, righteous God, and sinful man. There was certainly need of peace! Ephesians 2:2-3

God provided the peace through the blood of His Son.

Someone had to pay for our sins so God could forgive and take us to Heaven. 1 Peter 1:18-19, Romans 5:9

My friend the price for your forgiveness has been paid. All you have to do is accept this gift of forgiveness by faith. Romans 5:1

Not only did Jesus reconcile sinners to himself, but it tells us that Jesus has reconciled all things in Heaven and in Earth.

When Christ returns and reigns there will be complete submission to Him. There will be total peace with God in the natural world and in the world of men.

And we look forward also to the day when there will be a new Heaven and a new earth.

Revelation 21:1- And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

I believe that this is the time when Romans 8:21 will be fulfilled.

Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Philippians 2:9-10 - That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; [11] And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord. However only those who know Christ shall have peace!

Revelation 20:15 - And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The means of reconciliation of God to man and the means of reconciliation of everything in heaven and earth is the blood of Jesus Christ.

THE MIRACLE OF RECONCILIATION - Vss. 21-23

Talking to believers, Paul now shows us what a great miracle reconciliation is for the one who has come to Christ.

Vs. 21 says that we were alienated from God. The word means estranged, or we would say separated from God. Our sins did that.

We were the enemies of God.

Even though we might have thought we loved God before we accepted God's forgiveness, we were in reality God's foes. We were hostile towards God!

Our hostility led to wicked works.

But now, He has reconciled us or changed us.

Final reconciliation takes place when Jesus reins supreme.

Current reconciliation has brought us peace with God now.

Vs. 22 - The work of Christ accomplished three things that are mentioned here.

·        He has made us holy.

It is the same word that we get "saint from"

You might say that He has made us saints. The word means to be "set apart". Through Christ's death He has set those who believe in Him apart for God.

·        He has made us unblameable.

This word means "without blemish".

Just as the Old Testament temple sacrifices were to be without flaw or blame, we are without blame or blemish before God because of the Word of Jesus Christ.

·        He has made us unaccusable.

There is nothing that the accuser of the brethren, Satan, can accuse us with that will stick.

Not one accusation can keep me out of Heaven.

Not one accusation can stop God from loving me in Christ.

Vs. 23 - There's an "if" in this verse which, of course connects with the verse we just looked at.

This "if" does not mean that you can lose your salvation.

It means that if you are truly saved, you will become tooted and grounded in the Gospel and not moved away.

Someone has said, "If the Bible teaches the final perseverance of the saints, it also teaches that the saints are those who finally persevere in Christ. Continuance is the test of reality" John 10:27-30

THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION - Vss. 24-29

When a person preaches or shares Christ he is involved in the ministry of reconciliation.

The preaching of the word of reconciliation causes people to believe on Christ and be reconciled to God.

Paul, in verses 25-29 gives us some characteristics of his ministry of reconciliation that I feel will be true of us as we share Christ or witness of Him today.

·        REJOICING IN SUFFERING - Vs. 24

How did Paul "suffer" for these Colossians?

Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles. That is, to the non-Jews.

As such, he suffered all sorts of hardships and persecution. At the time of this writing, Paul was in prison.

In the rest of this verse it may appear that Paul is saying that the suffering of Christ was inadequate, so Paul had to suffer some more!

It is only the work of Christ that pays for sin! John 1:29, Hebrews 10:14

In this verse Paul is not talking salvation, but service.  As a believer in Christ Paul had the privilege of suffering for Christ and his body, the church.  The word “afflictions” means distress, pressure or trouble.

Philippians 1:29 - For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

2 Timothy 3:12 - Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

We will suffer like Paul when we dare to preach or witness for Christ. But like Paul, let us rejoice in the sufferings which are for the benefit of other believers.

·        REVEALING A MYSTERY - Vss. 25-27

A mystery in Scripture has nothing to do with "Murder She Wrote". It is not a "who done it?"

It is a "sacred secret", once hidden, but now revealed.

Vs. 25 - Paul was given a dispensation or a stewardship, or a responsibility. His job was to fulfill the Word of God in ministry to the gentiles.

Vs. 26 - This was a mystery, a sacred secret, hidden in the past, but now revealed to his saints.

Vs. 27 - The mystery is simply this.  Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Jewish Messiah, would indwell a church that is made up of people mostly like the Colossians, Gentiles!

Our hope of glory is that we have received Jesus Christ as our Savior the moment we believed on him and were reconciled to God. Our hope of Glory is that Christ indwells us! Galatians 3:27-28

And because Christ indwells us we are new creatures and we have a new and changed life!

2 Corinthians 5:17

This mystery may not mean a lot to you, but it is because of this mystery that you have equal access with God as any Jew does in Christ. And it is because of this mystery that you can walk up to any person and tell them that they can have forgiveness of sin in Christ.

·        Preaching the truth -  Vs. 28

The ministry of reconciliation is summed up in this verse.

It is preaching or proclaiming the truth.

It is to involve warnings.

And it is to involve teaching, not just scaring people.

This is done to present every person perfect in Christ.

·        Laboring in power – Vs. 29

No minister, not even Paul, was effective in his own power.

It is all dependent upon the gracious work of God's Holy Spirit.

So pray for your pastor that he will be properly empowered to reach the lost and minister to the saved.

And pray for yourself that you will be able to share Christ with those who need to hear the Gospel.

This is not only the Pastor's Job!

THE MEANS OF RECONCILIATION - Vs. 20

THE MIRACLE OF RECONCILIATION - Vss. 21-23

THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION - Vss. 24-29

Rejoicing in suffering

Revealing a mystery.

Preaching the truth -  Vs. 28

Laboring in power

This is a greatly expanded version of a previously shared outline.

************************************************************************************

HEBREWS 4:14-16

BEEN THERE! DONE THAT!

We use the expression, "Been there, done that!"  When we say, "Been there, done that," we can relate to what a person is going through!

There is a person who always understands your problem, always feels your problem, can always relate, and can always say, "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!" He may have not faced the exact trial but he faced trials so similar that he can always relate.  The person's name is The Lord Jesus Christ!

The Lord Jesus can always say to you, "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!"  And this morning in Hebrews 4:14-16 we see how He is present to help us through any difficulty.  These three verses show us that,

JESUS IS OUR PRIEST Vs. 14

There are three functions which the Lord Jesus is filling.

He is prophet. He is priest. He is king.

When He walked the earth the first time, his primary function was that of prophet.

When He comes again the second time to establish His kingdom his primary function will be as king.

Today, as Jesus sits on the right hand of God, His primary function is as priest. Not just any old priest, but Great High Priest!

In the Old Testament, priests were appointed to be mediators between God and His people. They were the go-betweens.

It was the high priest who offered the greatest sacrifice of the year on what is known as "The Day of Atonement", or "Yom Kippur".

Once a year the high priest entered the "the holy of holies" which contained the Ark of the Covenant and the mercy seat.

The mercy seat was where the glory of God dwelled on earth.  He came sprinkle blood on the Mercy Seat, symbolic of the sins of the people.

On this Day of Atonement the priest actually entered the "holy of holies” three times.  The first time he came in and burned incense. The second time he came and sprinkled the blood of a bull.  The third time he came, he sprinkled the blood of a goat.

When the priest came to the “holy of holies” bringing the blood to be sprinkled, he passed through three areas of the tabernacle or temple.

First he went through the outer court, then through the holy place, and then through the veil into the "holy of holies."

Before the priest could offer a sacrifice for the people, he had to offer a sacrifice for himself. Every year the offering was made at the mercy seat.

And during the year, thousands of offerings were offered for sin.  The sin offering was never enough!  Neither the priest, nor the sacrifice was perfect.

Then came the great high priest, the Lord Jesus. He offered the sacrifice of himself for sin. He was sinless, so it was an offering that was perfect. 1 Peter 1:18-19

The offering that Jesus made did not need to be repeated again ever! Hebrews 10:14, 9:28

After making the one time sacrifice for sin, Jesus delivered that blood to Heaven. Jesus, our priest has passed into, or rather, through the heavens.

He went through the first heaven or atmosphere, the second heaven of outer space, to the third heaven where God dwells and the true tabernacle is located. There was only one sacrifice needed and he paid it and delivered the blood. Hebrews 9:12

God's "mercy seat" is always available. The "throne of grace" is always open because of the work of Christ.

As our high priest Jesus remains in Heaven.  He is there as our mediator with God. He is there in our behalf.

Because our high priest has finished the work of paying for our sins, we are to "hold fast" our profession or confession.

JESUS IS OUR PARTNER Vs, 15

No matter what we face as Christians, we have a partner, The Lord Jesus Christ, who can say, "Been There, Done That!".

I wonder how much contact the high priest of the Old Testament had with the common man.  Probably it was not very much. There were just too many Israelites to know everybody! But our Great High Priest knows us personally. He indwells us personally, through His Spirit. Hebrews 13:5-6

As our great high priest He is present in Heaven to intercede for us and help us as we come to God.

And because he knows us, and because we are God's children, and because He is our partner is suffering, and because he did it himself - Because of all these things He can be touched with the feelings of our infirmities, or weaknesses.

Jesus also knows what is like to face temptation!

Temptation is one of our biggest problems!

There are three basic types of sin.

1 John 2:16 - For all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Genesis 3:6 - And when the woman saw that the tree [was] good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Good For Food - Lust Of the Flesh

Pleasant to the Eyes - Lust of the Eyes

Desired to Make One Wise - Pride of Life

Now let's turn to Matthew 4:1-11

Vs. 3 - Lust Of The Flesh

Vs. 6 - Pride Of Life

Vss. 8-9 - Lust Of The Eyes

Although Jesus did not give in to temptation, He, as our partner has faced temptation, and understands exactly what we face, and what our sorrows are!

JESUS IS OUR PATHWAY Vs. 16

Because Jesus is the Great High Priest

Because Jesus understands our weaknesses and is sympathetic towards them

We can now come to the throne!

Where is the throne to which we are to come?

It's in Heaven.

Whose throne is it? It's God's throne, with the Father and Son sitting there.

What kind of a throne is it?

There are times when it is a throne of Judgment.

However, right now for the believer, it is a throne of GRACE!!

You come in the name and righteousness of your Great High Priest, and He is there to help you!

 John 14:13-14

When you travel on land, you usually look for the road, or at least a path.  Jesus is the only pathway to the throne of Grace. We come through Him.

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Notice how we are to come.

We are to come boldly or confidently to the throne of grace.

We can be confident because our Great High Priest Is There.

It is here that we obtain mercy.

Mercy for forgiveness

Mercy to see what God is not allowing us to go through.

Mercy for our shortcomings

Mercy for our human infirmities

And there is always more grace.

The grace is there to help as we bring every worry, every care, every sin, every temptation before Him!

1 Peter 5:7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Jesus says, "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. COME THROUGH ME."

JESUS IS OUR PRIEST.

JESUS IS OUR PARTNER

JESUS IS OUR PATHWAY
