On a more serious note, we began a “Christmas Top Ten” list of our own last week.  We are trying to center in on the real meaning of Christmas by examining what I would say are the top ten characters or groups of characters involved in Christmas.

Let’s review:

10 – HEROD – THE FOE

  9 – The PROPHETS – THE FORETELLERS

8 – ZACHARIAS AND ELIZABETH – THE FAITHFUL

7 – SIMEON AND ANNA – THE FULFILLED

6 – THE WISE MEN – THE FOLLOWERS

THE SHEPHERDS – THE HEARERS

God was not going to do the most terrific thing that ever happened in behalf of the human race without making it known.

God was not going to send his Son to earth without having a welcoming committee.

God chose men who were of humble, even despised occupation, to hear about the birth of his Son.

The shepherds were common men.  Jesus came for the common man.

God actually let the shepherds know that the Good Shepherd had arrived.

John 10:14 - I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

·       THEY WERE ALERT

Luke 2:8 - And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

·       THEY WERE ALARMED

Luke 2:9 - And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

·       THEY WERE ADVISED

Luke 2:10-12 - And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. [12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

·       THEY WERE ACTIVE

Luke 2:15-16 - And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. [16] And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

·       THEY WERE ANNOUNCERS

Luke 2:17 - And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

·       THEY WERE APPRECIATIVE

Luke 2:20 - And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

4 - THE ANGELS – THE HERALDS

Luke 2:10-12 - And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. [12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:13-14 - And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, [14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

3 - JOSEPH – THE HELPER

Matthew 1:18-19 - Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. [19] Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

Matthew 1:20-21 - But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. [21] And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Matthew 1:24-25 - Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: [25] And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

Matthew 2:13-14 - And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. [14] When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

God doesn’t need our help, but has graciously chosen to us it.  The greatest way to help God is to do His will.

Ephesians 5:15-17 - See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, [16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. [17] Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

2 - MARY – THE HANDMAID (SERVANT)

Luke 1:37-38 - For with God nothing shall be impossible. [38] And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Luke 2:19 - But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

1 - JESUS – THE HOPE

Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

1 Peter 1:3 - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

Colossians 1:27 - To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Titus 2:13 - Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

THE SHEPHERDS – THE HEARERS

THE ANGELS – THE HERALDS

JOSEPH – THE HELPER

MARY – THE HANDMAID

JESUS – THE HOPE

JOURNEY OF FULFILLMENT

Luke 2:21-39

JOURNEYS WITH MARY - Lesson #3 of 4 (Lesson #4 is below.)

A COMPLETE LESSON

·       What have you done for someone else that has made them feel “fulfilled”?

·       What has someone done for you that has made you feel “fulfilled”?

·       What have you done that has made you feel “fulfilled”?

·       What has God done that has made you feel “fulfilled”?

We continue our “Journeys with Mary” in Luke 1-2.  We have already seen Mary’s “Journey of Faith” to see Elizabeth after the angel’s announcement of Jesus’ birth. We have also seen God doing as He promised after a “Journey of Fruition”.  There were those waiting in Israel for the arrival the Messiah.  For those who waited, this trip to the temple in Jerusalem was a “Journey of Fulfillment” as they viewed the promised Savior.

THEY HAD THE RIGHT PRIORITIES – Vss. 21-24

·       How do the priorities of Christians tend to be “messed up” or “out of whack”?

·       Why is it so easy for us to get our priorities as Christians out of order?

·       According to these verses, what do you think were the most important priorities to Mary and Joseph?

·       Vs. 21 – In accordance with Old Testament Law Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day. Leviticus 12:3 - And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

·       Mary and Joseph named the baby “Jesus” as they had both been instructed. Matthew 1:21, Luke 1:31

·       Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name “Joshua”, which means “Jehovah is salvation”. Why is this name so fitting?

·       Vs. 22-23 – There was a period of time when a woman who had a child was not allowed to enter the temple because she was ceremonially impure. Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem to offer a prescribed sacrifice in Mary’s behalf and also to present Jesus to the Lord.

·       The first born child was considered the Lord’s.     Exodus 13:1-2 - And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [2] Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

·       The first born child was to be presented to the Lord and redeemed.  Numbers 18:15-16 - Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto the Lord, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem. [16] And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels…

·       In what ways should we present all our children to the Lord?

·       Vs. 24 - The sacrifice that was made for Mary was the sacrifice that the poor were to make. Leviticus 12:1-8

THEY MET THE RIGHT PEOPLE – Vss. 25-27,      37-38

·       How have you seen God guide you to the right person at the right time?

·       There were at least two people that needed to see the literal fulfillment of God’s promise of Messiah. God guided them to the infant Jesus, and the infant Jesus to them.

·       Vs. 25 – Simeon had some terrific character traits. First of all, he was just or righteous in his dealings with others.  Why is it a joy to deal with righteous people?

·       Simeon was also devout, or devoted to God.  How can we tell when someone is truly devoted to God?

·       Simeon was waiting for the consolation or comfort of Israel through the coming Messiah.  We are to still be waiting for the (second) coming of the Messiah.  Titus 2:11-13

·       Simeon was also filled, or controlled by the Holy Spirit. It is neat to think that God wants to fill us with His Holy Spirit.  Ephesians 5:18

·       Vs. 26 – I think that it is likely that Simeon was an old man, but he wouldn’t necessarily have to have been.  The important promise was that he would see the Messiah before he died.

·       Vs. 27 – God brought Simeon and Anna to the right place at the right time.  As we walk with Him, he will do the same for us.  Ephesians 5:15-18

·       Vss. 36-38 – Anna was an old and Godly woman.  What does she teach us about priorities?

THEY HEARD THE RIGHT PRONOUNCEMENTS  – Vss. 28-36, 38

·       Vss. 28-30 – After seeing Jesus, what were Simeon’s first reactions? What do we learn from Simeon’s response to Christ?

·       What do verses 30-32 teach us about the Lord Jesus Christ?

·       Joseph and Mary already knew who Jesus was.  Why did Simeon’s statements about Him surprise them so in verse 33?

·       Vs. 34 – How do people fall before they rise when they trust Christ?

·       Who were some of the people who spoke against Jesus?

·       According to verse 35, speaking against Jesus revealed a wicked heart.

·       How and when did a sword pierce through Mary’s soul?

·       What lesson does Anna teach us in verse 38?

***************************************************************************

JOURNEY TO THE FUTURE

Luke 2:40-52

JOURNEYS WITH MARY - Lesson #4 0f 4

A COMPLETE LESSON

·       What are some of the significant stages that children pass through as they grow up?

·       In what ways can children surprise us as they grow up?

·       How do different events in a child’s life point to the future?

·       How do different character traits in a child’s life point to the future?

·       What do you think Jesus was like as a child?

We are concluding our “Journeys with Mary” in Luke 1-2.  We have already seen Mary’s “Journey of Faith” to see Elizabeth after the angel’s announcement of Jesus’ birth. We have also seen God doing as He promised after a “Journey of Fruition” to Bethlehem where Jesus was born.  Last time we saw a “Journey of Fulfillment”.  God fulfilled his promise to Simeon that he would see the Lord’s Christ before he died when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the Jerusalem temple.  The final journey took place twelve years later as Mary took a “Journey to the Future” as she sees Jesus showing signs of growing up in a trip to Jerusalem.

HE DEVELOPED INTO A MAN – Vss. 40-42

·       We know very little of Jesus’ childhood.

·       Vs. 40 tells us about His development. He grew up just the way you would expect the Son of God to grow up.

·       Three qualities mentioned here will be repeated in verse 52. We can say that Jesus’ childhood appears to be what we expect from any child. The only difference is, Jesus grew up better than any other child!  How do you think it was obvious that the grace of God was on Jesus?

·       Vs. 41 – At this point in Israel’s history, every Jewish male was required to go to Jerusalem for a feast at least once a year.  It was apparently optional for the wife.  What does this verse tell you about Mary?

·       Vs. 42 – At age twelve, Jesus was probably just a year away from becoming a full member of the synagogue.  It was recommended that fathers bring their sons along to Jerusalem when they were a year or two away from religious manhood.

·       What can Christian men and women do with their children that would follow Joseph and Mary’s good examples?

HE DESIRED THE THINGS OF GOD – Vss. 43-47

·       Vs. 43 – How do you think it happened that Joseph and Mary were able to leave Jesus behind in Jerusalem and not realize it? Remember they would have been traveling in a caravan.

·       What gave Jesus the right to tarry in the Temple, ignore at least an assumed command of Mom and Dad, and not be guilty of sin?

2 Corinthians 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin for  us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

·       Vss. 44-45 – What do you think was going through the minds of Joseph and Mary when Jesus could not be found?

·       Vss. 46-47 – Evidently they took a day’s travel away from Jerusalem and a day’s travel back.  They found Jesus in the temple on the third day.

·       Probably some of the great teachers of the law for that day were gathered on one of the temple’s porches.  The method of learning in those days was for learners to ask and answer questions.

·       Jesus was not teaching.  He would not do that publicly until he was 30.  His answers and his questions amazed those that heard Him.  What purpose, other than Jesus’ own personal spiritual development, would this session with the doctors of the law accomplish?

HE DEDICATED HIMSELF TO HIS FATHER’S BUSINESS – Vss. 48-50

·       Vs. 48 – How do you sympathize with Mary?  What challenges would have been associated with being the mother of the Son of God?

·       Vs. 49 - Once Joseph and Mary returned to Jerusalem, how long should it have taken them to find Jesus and why?

·       It is obvious that Jesus knew who He was, the Son of God, and that He had an intimate relationship with His Father.

·       As Christians, we are the children of God.

John 1:12 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Romans 8:16 - The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

1 John 3:1-3 - Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. [2] Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. [3] And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

·       How should we as the children of God have an intimate relationship with the Father?

·       How do we develop such a relationship?

HE DEFERRED TO AUTHORITY – Vs 51

·       How have you seen people justify a lack of submission to the authority God has set up in their lives?

·       How could Jesus have justified not being in subjection to His parents?

·       What does Jesus’ submission teach us?

Ephesians 5:21 - Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

HE DEEPENED IN MATURITY – Vs 52

1.     HE GREW INTELLECTUALLY – WISDOM

2.     HE GREW PHYSICALLY – STATURE

3.     HE GREW SPIRITUALLY – FAVOR WITH GOD

4.     HE GREW SOCIALLY – FAVOR WITH MAN

·       Why is growth in each of these areas important?

·       How can we help our children and grandchildren grow in each of these areas?

·       With the exception of growing physically, why should you and I continue to grow in each of these areas?

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

LUKE 2:9-14

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

As we are have put most of the cleaning, running, shopping and wrapping behind us, it is indeed time to take inventory and ask ourselves, “Do we have the true spirit of Christmas?”  What good is Christmas if we haven’t entered into the true meaning of Christmas?

I believe that the Spirit of Christmas is reflected in the Words of the Angels in Luke 2:10-14 - And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. [12] And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, [14] Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Based on this Scripture I would like to suggest to you that,

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF FAITH

Have you noticed how much faith was involved in the first Christmas?

·        Zacharias was disciplined by God because he didn’t believe the message that he would be the Father of John the Baptist.

·        Mary was visited by the Angel and told that she would be the mother of God’s Son.  It took faith for her to believe and accept this.

·        Joseph was told by God that his intended wife was pregnant through the work of God’s Holy Spirit. It took faith for Joseph to accept and believe that.

·        Simeon was told that he would not die until he saw the Lord’s Christ.  That required faith.

·        The Wise Men followed a star by faith, looking for the Promised Messiah.

·        And the shepherds.  They received a message from angels that the Savior, Christ the Lord was born in Bethlehem.  They believed that by faith and went to see Him.

Listen again to the message of the Angel to the shepherds.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The spirit of Christmas is the Spirit of faith.

You can’t truly enter into the Spirit of Christmas with out having faith that a Savior has been born, and that he’s your Savior.

You are a sinner who has broken God’s law.

You deserve eternal punishment.

But God in his love sent His sinless Son, to receive the punishment you should receive.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

The price for your sin has been paid.

It requires faith on your part to apply that payment for sin to your account.

You must accept Jesus as your Savior, as the one who paid for your sin. John 3:16

If you haven’t entered into the true spirit of Christmas by trusting the Lord Jesus as your Savior, I beg you to do so this evening.

And I want to remind those of us who know Jesus as our Savior that he is also “Christ, the Lord”.  That is something you and I must accept by faith.  If Jesus is the Messiah, and if Jesus is Lord (and He is!), then we must accept that by faith and allow Him to be Lord of our lives.

Christian, by faith, let Jesus rule your life.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF JOY

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

God intended Christmas to be a time of joy.

If anybody should have the Spirit of joy at Christmas, it should be you and I who are Christians.

·        We should have joy remembering the birth of our Savior.

·        We should have joy practicing the presence of Jesus in our lives.

·        We should have joy sharing the precious message of salvation with friends and loved ones.

·        We should have the joy of knowing that one day we will be with Him for all eternity.

·        We should have the joy of looking for His return.

·        We should have the joy of allowing Him to lead and guide us.

Philippians 4:4 - Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

Nehemiah 8:10 - …the joy of the Lord is your strength.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF PEACE

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

The wish here is for peace on earth.

In one sense, right now, Jesus does not bring peace.

Those who share the Gospel often produce unrest in the hearers. That’s the conviction of the Holy Ghost.

And Jesus told his followers that they would be persecuted for His Sake.

But Jesus came to earth to bring peace to anyone and everyone who will accept it.  Jesus brought peace.

Sin produces separation between God and man.

Because of his sin, man is God’s enemy.

He shed His blood for us so that we can be declared right with God, or justified. Romans 5:9

When a person trusts Jesus as Savior and is declared right with God, he is no longer God’s enemy, but God’s child. John 1:12

When a person trusts Jesus as Savior, but he is no longer God’s enemy he has peace with God.

Romans 5:1

But let’s me honest, although we are at peace with God, we often lack the peace of God.  We are often restless, up tight, bent out of shape, worried, and or anxious.  Why?

First of all, we lack peace because we fail to focus on God.

We focus on business instead of focusing on Jesus.

We focus on fun instead of focusing on Jesus.

We focus on our problems instead of focusing on Jesus.

But when we focus on Jesus everything else will fall into perspective and we will have peace.

Isaiah 26:3-4

If you don’t focus on reading God’s Word you’re not focusd on Jesus.

If you don’t focus on meditating on Scripture, you’re not focused on Jesus.

If you don’t focus talking about the things of God, you’re not focused on Jesus.

If you don’t focus on prayer, you’re not focused on Jesus.

This leads to the second reason for a lack of peace. We fail to commit all our problems to the Lord in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7

Christian to have the true spirit of Christmas, you must have peace.  Focus on the Lord and commit everything to Him in prayer.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF GOOD WILL

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

One of my favorite Christmas stories is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The star character is Ebenezer Scrooge, a skin flint old miser who claimed that Christmas was a “humbug”.

At the end of the story Scrooge is a changed man.  He then starts showing good will toward men by buying his employee Bob Cratchit a turkey, and generously sharing with people in need. He also raises Cratchit’s salary and he pays for medical attention for Tiny Tim.

And that’s generally our idea of good will towards men.

But for the Christian good will towards men goes further than that.

Yes, we are to do kind deeds to those in need. Galatians 6:10

Having good will towards men means ceasing from anger.

And good will towards men means forgiving others and not holding grudges against them.

 Ephesians 4:26-27, Ephesians 4:31-32

If you are unforgiving and/or bitter, you do not have the spirit of Christmas!

And one more thing, “good will towards men” would include seeking the Spiritual well being or all, Christians and non-Christians alike.

A non-Christian can not be truly happy without Jesus.

A Christian can not be truly happy without walking and growing in Jesus. You can help each of them with your personal concern and input into their Spiritual well-being.

Make sure this Christmas that you have the spirit of Christmas.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF FAITH

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF JOY

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF PEACE

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS THE SPIRIT OF GOOD WILL
