WHAT THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU

If you’ve been to a store lately, you know that we have commercialized Easter as much as we have commercialized Christmas.  And just as Santa Claus is the world’s symbol of Christmas, the Easter Bunny is the world’s symbol for Easter.

I will concede that’s that it’s fun to receive and eat chocolate Easter Bunnies and Eggs, candy chicks and jelly beans.  And I’ll concede that the Easter Bunny is a likeable enough character.  But I can’t figure out what positive message the Easter Bunny has.  In fact my problem with the Easter Bunny is not in what he says, but what he doesn’t say.  He doesn’t give a true picture of the real meaning of Easter.

I want to share with you four things that the bunny won’t tell you about Easter that you need to know.  If you don’t know these four things about Easter, you will not have a full understanding of Easter and that could be permanently fatal.

THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU THE PRICE OF EASTER

If there is any discernable message from the bunny, it is that we should buy.  We should buy the chocolate rabbits and eggs.  We should buy the stuffed toys and Easter baskets.  We should buy flowers and other gifts.

What the bunny doesn’t tell you is that the price has already been paid for you to enjoy Easter.

Let me back up for a moment and explain that each and every person who ever lived was born as a sinner. Psalm 51:5

If a person lives just a short time he or she becomes a sinner in practice. Romans 3:23

Sin is anything that displeases God.

Murder displeases God.

Stealing at any level, big or small, displeases God.

Lying displeases God.

Adultery displeases God.

Impure thoughts displease God.

Unforgiveness displeases God.

Unjustified anger displeases God.

Disobedience to parents displeases God.

And many other things displease God as well.

When we sin, we become debtors to God.  When we sin, we owe God! How so?  God is a righteous, holy God.  God has decreed that someone has to pay for our sins.

The logical conclusion is that we are the ones who should pay for our own sins.  Ezekiel 18:4

We owe God because of our sins.  We deserve punishment.

But God in His love had another plan.  He sent someone to earth who had never sinned to take our place and to pay our debts.  That someone is God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 5:6-9, John 3:16

THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU THE POWER OF EASTER

The bunny will tell you of the power of fantasy.  You can find all sorts of animation and stories that have absolutely nothing to do with the true meaning of Easter.

Easter is a day when the power of God is demonstrated!

1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Mark 16:1-7

The tomb is empty.

Jesus is not there!

He is risen!

And for 40 days after the resurrection Jesus appeared to the disciples, proving to them that He was indeed alive from the dead.  Luke 24:36-43

There have been those who have been risen from the dead.

Jesus himself brought at least three people back from the dead.

Everyone else but Jesus died again. Jesus is still alive!

Revelation 1:18

THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU THE PROMISE OF EASTER

The promise of Easter is simply this: JESUS IS THE FIRST TO BE RAISED FROM THE DEAD, BUT NOT THE LAST.

Through Him, everyone will be raised from the dead.

Those that have placed his faith and trust in Him will be raised to spend eternity in Heaven with Him.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU THE PRIORITY OF EASTER

Jesus has already paid for your sins. Romans 6:10

There are people who think that forgiveness of sin comes from their own self effort, from their own good works.

They think if they do enough good stuff, God will accept them into Heaven.

There’s a problem with that theory. It’s not what the Bible teaches. John 14:16, Ephesians 2:8-9

The priority of Easter is that you accept the gift that Jesus has already paid for on the cross.  The priority is that you believe on Jesus Christ as your Savior.

1 John 5:11-12 - And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

THE BUNNY WON’T TELL YOU:

THE PRICE OF EASTER

THE POWER OF EASTER

THE PROMISE OF EASTER

THE PRIORITY OF EASTER

The bunny won’t tell you these things, but I just did.

If you haven’t already, will you trust the Lord Jesus for forgiveness and eternal life?

Matthew 26-27

THE GREATEST CRIME IN HISTORY

THERE WAS INTRIGUE – 26:3-5, 14-16, 47-50

The Jewish leadership wanted Jesus disposed of.  Judas, one of Jesus’ closest associates, betrayed Him.

THERE WAS INJUSTICE – 26:59-66

This was a farce of a trial.

THERE WAS INDIGNITY (or INHUMANITY) – 26:65-67, 27:26-34

THERE WERE INSULTS – 26:38-46

The greatest insult of all was the needed separation between God the Father and God the Son as Jesus bore the price of the world’s sin. Vs.46

THERE WAS INTERVENTION – Vs. 51

The veil of the temple was rent in two, showing that the way was now open to the “holy of holies” through the death of Christ for our sins. He intervened for us! Isaiah 55:5-6

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

BECAUSE OF EASTER

Because of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we look forward to our own resurrection. Here we find:

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

1 Corinthians 15:51 - Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

SOMETHING DYNAMIC

1 Corinthians 15:52-53 - In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. [53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

SOMETHING DELIGHTFUL

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 - So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. [55] O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? [56] The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. [57] But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

SOMETHING DEMANDING

1 Corinthians 15:58 - Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

PRAYING WITH DAVID - Part #1

ON OUR KNEES - LEARNING FROM MEN OF PRAYER – LESSON #6 – DAVID

(A complete lesson)

INTERACTION – Groups of 2 or 3

V     What have you learned about prayer so far?

V     How have your prayers changed in the last few weeks?

V     Have you ever prayed a prayer written by someone else?  How was it helpful?

V     What are some of the written prayers in the Bible?

V     What precautions must we take when we pray a prayer written by someone else?

David is “the shepherd boy who became king”.  He is remembered as the young man who slew Goliath and as the writer of the 23rd Psalm. David was a man of deep devotion to God. Out of this devotion came many prayers which we can learn from, and even pray ourselves.

PSALM 63– DAVID’S PRAYER OF FELLOWSHIP

DESIRE FOR GOD - Vss. 1-2

·       Vs. 1 - What am I saying when I pray, “O God, thou are my God?”  Why are these words a significant way to start prayer?

·       What is the benefit of seeking God early?

·       Why should I be thirsty for God?

·       What should I do when I’m not thirsty for God?

·       Vs. 2 – In what ways should I want to see God’s power and glory?

DEVOTION TO GOD - Vss. 3-4

·       Vs. 3 – In what ways is God’s lovingkindness better than life?

·       What do verses 3 and 4 teach us about worship?

DEPENDENCE ON GOD - Vss. 5-7

·       Vs. 5-6 – How will having a satisfied soul make me satisfied and joyful?

·       Vs. 7 – What do you think it means to rejoice in the shadow of His wings?

DIRECTION FROM GOD - Vs. 8

·       Did you ever follow someone closely? How?

·       How should we follow hard after God?

Psalm 3 - PRAYER OF A GODLY MAN IN TROUBLE

HIS COMPLAINT - Vss. 1-2

·       When might we feel the way that David did?

·       Why was David doing the right thing?

HIS CRY - Vss. 4, 7

·       Vs. 4 - What can we be assured of when we are right with God?

·       Vs. 7 – How does this cry to God show David’s confidence in God?

HIS CONFIDENCE - Vss. 3,5,6,8

·       Vs. 3 - In the last year, how has God protected you and kept your “head above water?”

·       Vs. 5 – Restful sleep and awakening refreshed is an indication that truly my confidence is God.

·       Vs. 6 – David is saying that he won’t be afraid of even the largest army because his confidence is in God.

·       Vs. 8 – How is this verse comforting to you?

Psalm 4 – AN EVENING PRAYER

GOD WAS CONSULTED - Vs. 1

·       God had helped David in the past. On this basis, he asks for help again.

ENEMIES WERE CONFRONTED - Vss. 2-5

·       Why is it constructive to talk to people who can’t hear you?

·       Consider the advice that David is giving his enemies as also a prayer.  When we realize what those people who are opposed to us need, we can pray for it to happen.  We are actually helping them.

DAVID WAS COMFORTED - Vss. 6-8

·        Vs. 6 - There will always be pessimists around.  Let’s remember that the Lord is the source of our help.  We can ignore what the pessimists have to say!

·       Vs. 7 – In an agrarian society, joy is often dependent on the productivity of the crops.  David is saying that the joy that the Lord gives is better than a bumper crop.

·       Vs. 8 – We are again reminded that God’s protection will allow us to have a good and safe night’s sleep.

Psalm 5 – A MORNING PRAYER

DAVID WANTS TO BE HEARD Vss. 1-3

·       What David did want from God?

·       How did David view God?

·       What could God count on from David?  Why was that important to God?

DAVID WANTS TO BE HOLY Vss. 4-7

·       How is God’s holiness described in verses 4-6?

·       Vs. 7 – How did David intend to meet God’s standard of holiness?

DAVID WANTS TO BE HELPED Vss. 8-10

·       What is the benefit of allowing the Lord to fight our battles for us?

DAVID WANTS TO BE HAPPY Vss. 11-12

·       According to these verses, what do we need to do to be happy or joyful?
