Joshua 7

TROUBLE

TROUBLE DESCRIBED

·       ONE MAN – Vs. 1 – It only took one man’s sin to cause trouble.  The Children of Israel were not

to take things from Jericho for themselves, but Achan did. Joshua 6:17-19

·       ONE MISTAKE – Vss. 2-3 – God was not consulted before trying to attack Ai.  It Joshua had

talked to God, he would have known there was a problem.  Instead

                                                   Israel was presumptuous.

·       ONE MELTDOWN (MESS) – Vss. 4-9 – Because of sin in the camp, Israel was defeated.

TROUBLE DEALT WITH

·       ONE REASON – Vss. 10-12 – Israel failed because there was sin in the camp.

·       ONE REQUIREMENT – Vss. 11-13 – Sin had to be found and disciplined.

·       ONE RESPONSE – Vss. 16-26 – Joshua and the Children of Israel took care of the problem.

THE GODLY WALK

·       WHAT TO SHUN

Psalm 1:1 - Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

·       WHAT TO SEEK

Psalm 1:2 - But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

·       WHAT TO SHOW

Psalm 1:3 - And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

THE UNGODLY WALK

·       IT IS WORTHLESS

Psalm 1:4 - The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

·       IT IS WEAK

Psalm 1:5 - Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

·       IT IS WRECKED

John 1:40-42 etc.

ENLISTED!

In October of 1970 I enlisted in the U.S. Army.  Anyone who knows me will say, "Wait a minute, Jack!  You were drafted!"  Yes, I was drafted, but at the request of the military I signed on the dotted line.  I didn't have to go in the army. I could have chosen to go to jail. I am one of many, who over the years has been enlisted to serve either through the draft or through voluntary enlistment.

Before ever being enlisted into the U.S. army, I was enlisted in the Lord's army, sometime in early 1964.  Listening to Billy Graham on the radio, I knelt by my bedside and trusted Christ as my Savior.  Anyone who is saved has been enlisted to serve the Lord.  One of the first people enlisted was the Apostle Peter.

HE WAS COMPELLED BY HIS BROTHER. Vss. 40-42

After Andrew found the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, he brought Peter to meet Him.

I believe that it was at this time that Peter believed on Him. Please note:

1. The PRIORITY that Andrew places on finding his brother.

2. The PRONOUNCEMENT that Andrew makes to Peter. "We have found the Messiah..."

3. The PROJECTION that Jesus makes concerning Peter. Peter's name was Simon. The Lord had plans for Peter that would make him to be a stone, or a rock. He would be solid.  Peter was anything but that when he started. The Lord has plans, a projection for each one of our lives. He plans to use us in specific ways.

HE WAS CALLED BY HIS MASTER. Matthew 4:18-20

Peter is now shown God's plan for his life. He was to follow the Lord Jesus, and the Lord would make Him a fisher of men.  The Lord is still calling us today to follow Him so, we too, can be made fishers of men.

HE WAS CONVICTED BY HIS SAVIOR. Luke 5:1-11

First Peter was saved. Next, he was called to follow Jesus. Evidently Peter wasn't following the Lord full time.  In this passage we find him back at the fishing nets.  The end result of this experience with Jesus is that Peter is convicted of just what a sinner he is. He is now ready to follow Jesus full time. "They forsook all, and followed him." (Vs. 11)

Acts 3:1-4:4

ATTENTION GRABBER, SS 4/9/06

The Model Church, Lesson #7,

Do people ever do things to get someone else's attention?  Give some examples.

Has God ever done anything to get your attention, or the attention of a loved one? Give an example.

What are some of the things God did in the Bible to get people's attention?

In the early church, God wanted the attention of the Jews, and later the Gentiles. He would work miracles through the Apostles to get the attention of the unsaved.

Hebrews 2:3-4 - How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; [4] God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

Today we want to look at the first miracle that was worked after Pentecost.  It was an attention grabber, which resulted in another sermon from Peter, and a great number of souls saved.

THE MAN - 3:1-3

THE MIRACLE - 3:4-11

THE MESSAGE - 3:12-26

In his sermon Peter answered the following questions:

·       WHAT HAPPENED? Vss. 12, 16

·       WHAT DID ISRAEL DO? Vss. 13-15, 17

·       WHAT DO THE SCRIPTURES SAY? Vss. 18, 21-24

Deuteronomy 18:15-19

·       WHAT IS THE PROPER RESPONSE TO THIS MESSAGE? Vss. 19-20, 25- 26,

THE MANNERS (OF RESPONSE) 4:1-4

·       The Religious Leaders got angry and threw them in jail. Vss. 1-3

·       Many others believed on the Lord and were saved. Vs. 4

PRAYING WITH DAVID - Part #2

ON OUR KNEES - LEARNING FROM MEN OF PRAYER – LESSON #7 – DAVID

(A complete lesson)

INTERACTION

V     When and why do you find it hard to praise God?

V     When and why do you find it hard to admit you’re wrong?

V     How do you know when you have truly repented of something?

V     What connection do you see between praise and repentance?

We are looking at two more Psalms written by David that we can adapt for our own prayers. A clean heart is a requirement for sincere praise.

First we will look at Psalm 51, A Psalm of Penitence, and then Psalm 145, A Psalm of Praise.

Psalm 51 – DAVID’S PENITENCE

·       The heading to this Psalm tells us the occasion of its writing. What do you know about David and Bathsheba?

APPEAL FOR GOD'S MERCY Vss. 1-2

·       Why did David need mercy?

·       When and why do we need mercy?

·       It is good when we remember how much mercy we need!

·       On what basis does God supply His mercy?

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SIN Vss. 3-6

·       What’s wrong with this confession, “If I have done anything wrong please forgive me”? Vs. 3

·       What makes sin so terrible? Vs. 4

·       Why is sin unavoidable? Is it always unavoidable? Vs. 5

·       What does verse 6 have to do with confession of sin?

ASK FOR GOD'S CLEANSING Vss. 7-14

·       Hyssop was a plant used as a kind of paintbrush. It was used to apply the blood of a sacrifice upon something. Vs. 7

·       What does verse 7 tell you about God’s cleansing when He forgives?

·       What happens when we allow sin to control our lives? Vs. 8

·       When God hides His face from our sins they are no longer seen by him.  When He blots them out, they are no longer on the record. Vs. 9

·       Why is a clean heart a miracle? Vs. 10

·       A right spirit is a “steadfast spirit”.  What is and why do we need a steadfast spirit? Vs. 10

·       What was David afraid of losing in verse 11?  Should we have the same concern?

·       According to verses 12-14, what will happen when God forgives me?

ABIDE IN GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS Vss. 15-19

1.     With a concert of praise – Vs. 15

2.     With a contrite heart – Vss. 16-17

3.     With concern for the well-being of God’s people – Vss. 18-19

PSALM 145– DAVID’S PRAISE

·       Praise should always be a part of our lives.  This Psalm gives us at least 7 reasons for praising the Lord.

1. GOD'S POSITION - KING, Vss. 1-2

·       What does it mean when I say to God, “You are my God?”

·       What does it mean when I say, “You are my king?”

·       These two positions of God and king make Him worthy of my praise simply because He is far superior to me.

2. GOD'S POWER, Vss. 3-6

·       God’s greatness is unsearchable. Vs. 3

·       God’s greatness is to be shared. I do this when I praise Him publicly and tell others what He has done. Vss. 4-5

·       “I will declare thy greatness” is a personal commitment. Vs. 6

·       Why should we declare His greatness?

3. GOD'S PERSONALITY Vss. 7-9, 17

·       What personality traits are listed in these verses? Is there one that particularly impresses you?

4. GOD'S PREEMINENCE Vss. 10-13

·       How is God’s kingdom preeminent?

5. GOD'S PROVISION Vss. 14-16

·       How dependent on God is the world, whether the world realizes it or not?

·       How dependent on God are you? Are you aware of it?

6. GOD'S PRESENCE Vss. 18-19

·       Why is God’s presence such a blessing?

7. GOD'S PRESERVATION Vss. 20-21

·       How does Vs. 20 keep me from worrying?
