TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

On March 10, 1997 Sermon Seeds was sent out for the first time with this introduction:

Sermon Seeds is a weekly mailing of brief sermon outlines from Pastor Jack Peters.  These outlines are meant to help other pastors and Bible Teachers in their own preparations.

These outlines are only "seeds".  They are not sermons ready for you to preach.  Feel free to improve on these outlines anyway the Lord leads you.

As seeds these outlines need to be:

WRAPPED (planted)  in the soil of  SUPPLICATION   (prayer)

WATERED with the rain of EDUCATION (doctrine)

WARMED by the sun of APPLICATION AND ILLUSTRATION

We thank God for His enabling and your support over the last ten years.  In July of 1997 the Sermon Seeds Website was launched.

This tenth anniversary edition includes the latest in the Life of Christ Series, plus outlines that were mentioned as meaningful by you.

Thanks for letting me a part of your life for at least part of these last ten years.  I hope you enjoy the new material and (if I may call them this) “the classics” from Sermon Seeds.

Yours for the Master,

Pastor Jack Peters

P.S. – As with other email lists, people’s email addresses change and are dropped by the computer.  This often means that our list shrinks a little in size.  If you could send this anniversary edition to those you think might be interested in subscribing, I’d greatly appreciate it.

MATTHEW 28:1-10, JOHN 20:1-17

AT THE TOMB

Life of Christ #57

It is the third day after the death of Jesus.  It is early morning, and dark as a group of women proceed towards the tomb, hoping to anoint the body of Jesus. By the time they get there the sun is beginning to rise.

A PERPLEXING PROBLEM – Matthew 28:1-4

Vs. 1 – Matthew mentions two women who have come to the tomb. But, according to the other Gospels, there were others. Mark 16:1, Luke 24:1

A great stone had been rolled in front of the sepulcher, and there was a Roman guard contingent posted. Mark 27:59-60, 62-66

The women were concerned as to the accessibility of the body. Mark 16:3

When they arrived the women discovered an even more perplexing problem.  The stone was rolled away from the tomb.  Evidently, Mary Magdalene saw the stone rolled away, and ran for help.

She did not stay, as the other women did, to hear the message of the angels concerning the resurrection.  She went to find Peter and John.

Vs. 2 – There had been a huge earthquake when an Angel from Heaven rolled away the stone.

Why did the Angel roll away the stone?

Was it to let Jesus out? No!

Jesus’ resurrection body is capable of going through walls.

The angel rolled away the stone to show Jesus’ followers that the tomb was empty!

The angel sat on the stone that he had rolled away.

Vs. 3 – The angel’s appearance reflected the glory of the God he served.  He evidently glowed with brilliance like lightening.  His clothing was as white as snow.

Vs. 4 – The guards were terrified and became like dead men.  They were decommissioned, so to speak.

A PERPLEXING PROBLEM – Matthew 28:1-4

A PROFOUND ANNOUNCEMENT – Matthew 28:5-7

Vs. 5 – The great announcement to those who believe on Jesus as their Savior is always “fear not!”

The Roman guards should have feared.

Those that crucified Jesus should have feared.

Anyone who is not trusting Jesus as Savior should fear.

But those of us who know Jesus as Savior should not fear! Psalm 27:1, Isaiah 41:10, Luke 12:4-7

Vs. 5-6 – The angel continued in his message. The women were not to fear because Jesus wasn’t there. That was great news!

He had risen from the dead as He said. Jesus proved himself to be reputable. He did what He said that He would do!  John 2:20-22, Matthew 16:21

Vss. 6-7 – The message of the angel is very encouraging.  There are four words that summarize what we should do in reaction to the resurrection.

“COME AND SEE” – We need to come and see for ourselves that Jesus is indeed risen from the dead.  We  need to believe in the death burial and resurrection of Christ for forgiveness and everlasting life.

“GO AND TELL” – After seeing and believing for ourselves, we need to go and tell others the wonderful news.  We need to “REACH OUR WORLD” as our theme for this month says.

Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

A PERSONAL APPEARANCE – Matthew 28:8-10

Vs. 8 – The women obeyed the angel.

You can understand how they would still have an element of fear.  It was probably fear of the unknown, fear of the new, and fear of the unexplainable.

But there was also great joy!  Jesus was alive! Jesus was victorious over the grave. Jesus was who He said He was!

Vs. 9 – The logical response to seeing Jesus alive is to worship Him!

Vs. 10 - Like the angel a few short minutes before, Jesus sent the women to share the good news of His resurrection!  Jesus sends us to our world with the same message: Mark 16:15

A PENETRATING INVESTIGATION – John 20:1-9

Vss. 1-2 – As we said earlier, Mary Magdalene evidently saw the empty tomb and left to tell John and Peter the news. Her understanding was foggy at best. She was convinced that someone had stolen the body.

Vss. 3-5 – John, who was probably younger, outran Peter.  He looked in and saw the evidence of the resurrection. But He did not go in.

Vss. 6-7 – Peter went in and saw the evidence himself.

Everything was orderly in the tomb.

The grave clothes were there.

The napkin, or sweat band for his head were there.

These were proof that Jesus had been raised.

Vss. 8-9 – Although Jesus had said that He would rise from the dead, the disciples never “got it!”  And they did not know the scriptures that told of His resurrection.

John saw the evidence and believed.

Vs. 10 – Peter may have walked away still perplexed by the empty tomb. John walked away convinced.

A PRIVATE INTERVIEW – John 20:10-15

Vss. 11-12 – Mary returns to the sepulcher. She remains outside weeping.  Peter and John are gone. Angels appear.

Vs. 13 – Here was a very good question. “Why are you weeping?”

The angels knew why she was weeping, but I believe that they were intimating that she had no reason to weep!

The angels knew that Mary had no reason to weep, but every reason to rejoice.

There are times in our lives when sorrow overwhelms us and we weep.  This is okay to a point. It’s normal.

Eventually there is a time to go beyond the weeping to rejoicing.

The Lord Jesus is risen from the dead.

The Lord Jesus never leaves or forsakes us.

The Lord Jesus has a place for us in Heaven.

All sorrow and trials here on earth are temporary.  Our lives, as Christians, are eternal!

Psalm 30:5 - …weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Vss. 14-15 – Jesus came to Mary in her sorrow, as He will come to you in you sorrow.

Again, He asks why she is weeping.

Mary still doesn’t get it. She does not know that she is talking to Jesus, and very bravely, thinking Jesus to be the gardener, offers to move the body herself.

Vs. 16 – Jesus turns Mary’s tears to joy with the mention of her name.

Vs. 17 – Mary was clinging to Jesus. She was not to cling.

The plan was for Jesus to ascend to Heaven.

From there He would indwell each believer with His Holy Spirit.

It was a time for Good News and Mary was to share it!

A PERPLEXING PROBLEM – Matthew 28:1-4

A PROFOUND ANNOUNCEMENT – Matthew 28:5-7

A PERSONAL APPEARANCE – Matthew 28:8-10

A PENETRATING INVESTIGATION – John 20:1-9

A PRIVATE INTERVIEW – John 20:10-15

JUST AS I AM

In honor of Ethel Peters 8/25/22-9/24/04

If you would like the complete notes of this sermon, please email me at jpeters@alltel.net. (Just allow me a couple of days. I am out of town until Wednesday night.

If you have attended this church or other evangelical churches for very long, you are undoubtedly familiar with the hymn that we just sung, Just as I am.  The words were written in 1836 by Charlotte Elliot and the music we sing this hymn to was written by William Bradbury.

Miss Charlotte Elliott was visiting some friends in the West End of London, and there met the eminent minister, César Malan. While seated at supper, the minister said he hoped that she was a Christian. She took offense at this, and replied that she would rather not discuss that question.

Dr. Malan said that he was sorry if had offended her, that he always liked to speak a word for his Master, and that he hoped that the young lady would some day become a worker for Christ.

When they met again at the home of a mutual friend, three weeks later, Miss Elliott told the minister that ever since he had spoken to her she had been trying to find her Saviour, and that she now wished him to tell her how to come to Christ. “Just come to him as you are,” Dr. Malan said. This she did, and went away rejoicing. Sankey, Ira David. My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns. Harper & Brothers, 1906.

About the words or this hymn her brother said: “In the course of a long ministry, I hope I have been permitted to see some of the fruit of my labor, but I feel that far more has been done by a single hymn of my sister’s.” http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/u/justasam.htm

Just As I Am is one of those Gospel hymns that has been used as what we call an “invitation hymn”.

It is generally sung at the end of a service and is used to invite people to trust Christ as Savior.  This hymn also encourages Christians to bring their problems to their Savior.

This hymn has a great Biblical message.

The theme of this hymn is “I Come”.  There are five verses that we use of this hymn.  Each one stresses a different aspect of coming.

VERSE 1 – I COME WITH ONE PLEA

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 2 – I COME FOR COMPLETE PURIFICATION

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 3 – I COME WITH MANY PROBLEMS

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 4 – I COME FOR GREAT PROVISION

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

VERSE 5 – I COME BECAUSE OF GREAT PROMISES

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

This hymn was my Mom’s favorite!

2 KINGS 4:1-7

THE STEADY FLOW

Life of Elisha, The Steady Prophet #3 of 9

Introduce this sermon by talking about some successful people you know personally.

I think that most of us would like to be successful.  As Christians, we should desire to be successful in the eyes of God. To be a success in God's eyes, you must be a born again Christian. (John 3:1-16). Also, to be a success, you need to be successful, you must be faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2). Thirdly, to be a success, you must be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

An illustration of success in God's eyes is found in our text. We often relegate such stories to children's church or Sunday School, but don't consider the value of the story for us adults.

This story tells of a steady flow of oil that continued to flow until all was full. In order for us to be successful Christians, we must have the steady, continuous flow of God's Holy Spirit in our lives. As Christians, we will go through three stages if we experience the filling or controlling of the Holy Spirit.  In this story I see pictures of the:

THE BANKRUPT CHRISTIAN - Vs. 1

Elisha was apparently the chief prophet in Israel at this time.  There were schools of training for those who would aspire to be prophets. They were the Bible Schools of their day.  Today we might call the students "preacher boys".

One of the widows of one of the sons of the prophets came to Elijah. Her husband was dead. She was bankrupt, and creditors were coming to take her sons as slaves to pay the debt.

There are many Christians like this women in our story. They are bankrupt.

They have tired in their own strength to do something for God. They have tried in their own effort to be successful. They have made their own plans to serve God and have met with nothing but disappointment. They have done battle with habitual sin in their lives and have ended up losing (Romans 7:18-21).

Please note that this woman was honest. She came to Elisha. She did not try to fool him. She simply told the truth.  As Christians, we need to be equally honest. When we sense bankruptcy in our Spiritual lives, we must come and honestly humble ourselves before God (James 4:6-10)

THE RESOURCEFUL CHRISTIAN - Vs. 2

Elisha wants to know, "What do you have on hand?" He wants to know, "What are your resources?" What was available for God to multiply?  You might recall that the Scripture tells how God multiplied a little meal and a little oil belonging to another widow (1 Kings 17:8-16). We also know that God the Son multiplied a little boy's lunch so that it fed a multitude (John 6:1-14).

This lady only had a little oil. It was a valuable commodity, but not enough to get her out of debt.

What do Christians have to help them when they sense that they are bankrupt?

They do not have merit.

They do not have strength within themselves.

They do not have ability.

BUT THEY DO HAVE OIL!

Oil is often symbolic for God's Holy Spirit.

We do have the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13, Romans 8:9, Zechariah 4:6, Acts 1:8,

Like the woman in the story we need to be resourceful. We must realize that we have all we need for success through the Holy Spirit.

THE VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN - Vss. 3-7

Vs. 3-4 - Elisha's advice was simple. It was for her to use her resources. She was to borrow empty pots, go home, shut the door, and start pouring.

The victorious Christian will do something similar. We do not need more of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit needs more of us. As we provide ourselves as an empty vessel, He will fill us.

An empty vessel is one that has confessed all known sin.

An empty vessel is one that contains nothing of self (Romans 12:1).

An empty vessel is one that has an open lid, ready, willing, and asking to be filled (1 John 5:14-15).

Vss. 5-6 - The woman did as she was told. When there was no longer an empty vessel, the oil stopped flowing. We must continually present to God an empty vessel, so he can fill it.

The results of Spirit filling are seen in Acts 1:8, Ephesians 3:16, 5:18-21 and Galatians 5:22-23.

Remember that the steady flow of the Holy Spirit, which gives power, victory, joy and fruitfulness, will stop flowing when we fail to provide an empty vessel. However, the flow of the Spirit will resume when there is again an empty vessel available to be filled.

Psalm 116:15

THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS (A Funeral Message)

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

The death of a saint (born again Christian) is precious because of:

1. THE PERSON WHO DIED - A CHILD OF GOD - John 1:12,

    Romans 8:15-16

2. THE PRICE THAT WAS PAID - THE SHED BLOOD OF CHRIST -

    1 Peter 1:18-19

3. THE PLACE THAT HE HAS GONE - HOME - Philippians 1:21, 2

    Corinthians 5:6-8, Revelation 21:1-4

4. THE PROMISE OF RESURRECTION - RAPTURE -

   1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Philippians 4:14-19

HEAVENLY BANKING

Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 is all too often taken out of context, without Christians considering any conditions that God might place on the fulfilling of this promise.

Let's consider this verse in light of verses 14-19.  I think of this particular passage as a picture of Heavenly Banking.  I see the Christian doing what he should do, and our Heavenly Father responding.  Please note that Heavenly Banking:

HEAVENLY BANKING REQUIRES INVESTMENTS - Vss. 14-16, 18

In verses 10-13, Paul was thanking the believers at Philippi for their financial support.  It had been some time since they had helped, but they were again able to do so.  Paul did insist, though, that it was God who enabled Paul to flourish whether his financial conditions were good or bad.

Paul did not want the Philippians to think that he didn't need appreciate or their support.

Vs. 14 - Paul says here, "You've done well", or, "You've done a beautiful thing!” They had "communicated" or had fellowship with Paul. They were partners with Paul in his ministry. Their gift made them part of his team.

Vss. 15-16 - When Paul left the Philippians, they supported him financially so he could continue his missionary work.  You would think that churches would stand in line to support someone as great as the Apostle Paul, but the only supporting church Paul had was the Philippians.

According to Verse 15, the Philippians communicated with Paul concerning giving and receiving.  These two words were banking terms.  Today we would use the terms debits and credits.  This reminds me that giving is a business transaction.  Giving is an investment in God's business!

Vs. 18 - Paul had received a generous gift from the Philippians.

Notice how pleased God is when we invest in his work.

Paul calls it "an odor of a sweet smell".

Investments in God's Kingdom made with the right attitude smell good to God!

Investments in God's Kingdom are sacrifices given to God.

Giving to the church and to missions is actually an act of worship!

God is well pleased with the right kind of giving!

God is well pleased with sacrificial giving. Luke 21:1-4

What are God's principles for giving?

In the Old Testament the tithe is mentioned. That's 10 percent. I believe that for us as Christians, the tithe is the logical place to start.  Why should we give anything less, having received the wonderful gift of salvation?  And I believe that the tithe should go to the local church.

But above the tithe, the investment in the local church, there is the investment we can make in missions around the world.  And there are some New Testament principles that help us decide what we should be doing. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

HEAVENLY BANKING YIELDS INTEREST - Vs. 17

Paul is saying here, "I am more interested in your reward than receiving a gift."

When we give with the right attitude and with the right proportion God will allow you to bear fruit both in this life and in the next.  God pays interest on your investments for Him.

Paul knew that God rewards those who invest in God's Kingdom.

And there are many Scriptures that prove this. Proverbs 11:25, 19:17, 22:9, 2 Corinthians 9:8

God promises sufficiency so we can abound to every good work.

God multiplies our investments. They gain interest.

Imagine what God can do with your investments, if you make them willingly and cheerfully!

Matthew 6:19-21 - Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Money invested in earthly endeavors disappears.

Money invested in the Lord's work reaps eternal rewards.

Giving money does not gain you entrance into Heaven.

Only being born-again by faith can do that.

But giving money to the Lord's work means that God can reward the Christian in Heaven for the investment made on earth.

HEAVENLY BANKING IS FULLY INSURED - Vs. 19

Now hear me! We should never give to get!

Giving so we can receive is not pleasing to God.

But, when we give sacrificially

When we give cheerfully

When we give out of love first for God, and then for the individual then God promises that our giving is fully insured!

God promises that our needs will be met.

Notice it says "needs" and not "greeds".

God won't provide for our selfishness.

Notice how God will provide for us.

He will take care of ALL our needs and will do it according to His riches in glory.

If you ask a rich man for a donation to your favorite charity and he gives you $10, he has given to you out of his riches. But that's a donation you and I could also give out of our riches.

If you ask a rich man for a donation to your favorite charity and he gives you $50,000, he has given according to his riches.  He has given as only a rich man can give.

Get the point? God gives according to His riches.  That means that God will give to us generously in order to meet our needs.

Perhaps our thoughts can be summed up with Matthew 6:33,

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

It seems to me that God is saying, "You take care of my business, and I'll take care of yours."

So now we know the principles of Heavenly Banking.

Heavenly Banking:

REQUIRES INVESTMENTS

YIELDS INTEREST

IS FULLY INSURED

Revelation 20:11-15

WHY I BELIEVE IN MISSIONS

There are many reasons to believe in missions.  The best reason is the great commission of Matthew 28:19-20.  However the account of The Great White Throne Judgment of unbelievers gives me four more reasons to believe in missions.

I believe in missions because of:

1. THE MAJESTY OF THE JUDGE (The Lord Jesus) Vs. 11

2. THE MULTITUDES THAT ARE PRESENT Vss. 12a & 13a

3. THE METHOD OF JUDGMENT Vss. 12b & 13B.

Unsaved men will be punished for their works, just as saved men will

be rewarded for their works (1 Corinthians 4:5, 2 Corinthians 5:10)

.  This only has to do with severity of judgment or reward, not salvation.

4. THE MISERY OF THE MISSING ENTRY. Vss. 14-15

When a person is born again he or she has his name written in the "Book

of Life."  When a person is not born again, he or she faces the

punishment of the Lake of Fire. If a person's name is missing, so is

    Heaven for that person.
