1 Samuel 24:1-22

YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION

There are times when we are going to be tempted to take matters into our own hands.  Even our Christian friends might encourage us to do something that will evidently give us some relief, but will be totally against the will of God.

God, through Samuel, had told Saul that he and his family would be removed from the throne of  Israel. 1 Samuel 15:26-28

David had already been anointed to be the next king of Israel. See 1 Samuel 16:1-13

When King Saul figured out who the next King of Israel would be, he became David's enemy. 1 Samuel 18:5-11 and 1 Samuel 20.

David was forced to flee from Saul. 1 Samuel 20.

In time, as Saul was seeking to find David, they ended up in the same cave. What a temptation there was for David to do what was wrong.

DAVID AVOIDS DOING EVIL Vss. 1-8 (1 Corinthians 10:13)

DAVID APPROACHES SAUL Vss. 9-15

SAUL ACKNOWLEDGES DAVID'S GOODNESS Vss. 16-20

Matthew 9:9-13

THE HEART OF THE MASTER

If we know the Lord Jesus as our Savior He is our master.  The heart of our Master is for those who are lost.  Let us follow our Master as He seeks to win those who are not saved to Himself.

THE MASTER’S CALL – Vs. 9

And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

THE MASTER’S CONGREGATION – Vs. 10

And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

THE MASTER’S CAUSE – Vss. 11-13

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? [12] But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [13] But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

John 2:1-11

HOW TO BE A BLESSING

Jesus was a blessing to the married couple, the family, and the guests at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.

Jesus teaches us how to be a blessing to others when He changed the water into wine.

JESUS WAS INTERESTED IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS – John 2:1-4 – BE INTERESTED!

JESUS WAS INVOLVED IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS – John 2:5-8 – BE INVOLVED!

JESUS IMPROVED THE LIVES OF OTHERS – John 2:9-11 – BE AN IMPROVEMENT!

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE LOCAL CHURCH

Romans 12:3-8 (A COMPLETE SUNDAY SCHOOL OR BIBLE STUDY LESSON)

·       What are some of the things you want from this church?

·       What are some of the things that other people want from this church or other local churches?

·       Why might the title of this study be disturbing to some?

·       Does God want you to get the most out of church? Why? How?

·       React to this statement: “In order to receive you must give.”

For us to get the most out of our bodies every part of the body must be functioning properly.  In order for us to get the most out of the local church, each participant must be functioning properly. In Romans 12:3-8 we find three principles, which when followed by the whole church, will guarantee that each of us will get the most out of the local church.

BACKGROUND – Vss. 1-2

·       What will church be like when each person acts like a living sacrifice?

·       How will each Christian having a “renewed” mind affect a local congregation?

·       How will proving what is “…that good and acceptable, and perfect will of God” effect the community in which a church resides?

·       When each Christian in the local congregation is following Romans 12:1-2, putting verses 3-8 into practice will be much easier.

THE PRINCIPLE OF INTROSPECTION – Vs. 3

·       Paul appeals to the church based on the “grace” that was given to him. This grace made him an Apostle in the local church. See Romans 1:1-5, 1 Timothy 1:12-14

·       Paul is setting the example of a humble evaluation of one’s gifts.

·       When it comes to one’s gifts and abilities why do many people over evaluate them?

·       How is this over evaluation of gifts a problem in the local church?

·       How is the under evaluation of one’s gifts also a problem?

·       Why do Christians often tend not to use their gifts or even try to find out what they are?

·       How do you handle a person who thinks he’s more gifted than he is?

·       How do you handle a person who claims not to have gifts?

·       How do you handle a person who doesn’t want to use their gifts?

·       What does it mean to “think soberly” about our gifts?

·       What part does faith have in the evaluation of our gifts?

THE PRINCIPLE OF INTEGRATION – Vss. 4-5

·       How is your eye different from you knee, or your nose different from your hand?

·       How are your thumb, ears, and brain integrated into your body?

·       What happens when part of your body is not doing its job?

·       It is ridiculous to think of every member of our body as having the same function.  It is equally ridiculous to think of each member of Christ’s body as having the same function.

·       Just as our body is integrated with each part working together to compliment the other, so the church is integrated with each person’s giftedness designed to contribute to the well being of the church.

·       What happens when a member of the church is not doing their job?

·       Each person needs to discover what his or her gifts are and integrate them into Christ’s body, the church.

·       How does one discover his or her gifts?

THE PRINCIPLE OF INITIATION – Vss. 6-8

·       Paul wants us to initiate or start the use of our gifts and then to keep on using them.

·       Every spiritual gift given to a Christian is a result of God’s sovereign grace.  God has given each of us at least one spiritual gift which we do not deserve.  Because they come out of His grace, He has chosen our gifts for us.

·       We should not complain or pout if we seem to be less gifted than others.  He has uniquely gifted each of us to be integrated into His body.  We are only responsible for the gifts we have.  With more gifts comes more responsibility.  Luke 12:48

·       Paul now gives a list of seven gifts.  These are not all the spiritual gifts mentioned in the Scriptures, but they are a good place to begin in evaluating what our gifts are.

·       Prophesy – Is speaking for God.  Today it is the preaching of God’s Word.  Old and New Testament prophets proclaimed boldly their message from God.  The preacher today is to do the same. 2 Timothy 4:2

·       Ministry (Service) – What are some of the wide variety of gifts that fall under the gift of “service”?

·       Teaching – What are some of the different styles of teaching?  Why are teachers of the word vital? Why should the pastor have some ability in teaching? What qualities does a good teacher have?

·       Exhortation – An exhorter is an encourager.  He is one who, like the Holy Spirit who empowers him, “comes alongside to help”.  What makes a person a good encourager?

·       Giving – Everyone is to give (2 Corinthians 9:7), but there are some who are gifted in this area.  They are to give with “simplicity”, or simply. They are not to make a show about their giving.  Some translations say that the giver is to give generously. This too, is true.

·       Ruling – When a person has the gift of ruling, he is able to provide leadership.  Not all leaders in the church are members of the church board.  Many ministries need those who will lead.  If God has gifted you as a leader you are to be diligent in the job you have been given.

·       Mercy – What is involved in showing mercy?  Why is cheerfulness an important ingredient?

·       You might have noticed that each of these “gifts” are qualities that should be parts in some degree to every Christian’s life. (For instance, we all should give and show mercy.)  While we should use all of these qualities at one time or another, the person who is gifted in a particular area should develop his or her gift.

Selected Scriptures

I'D RATHER SING

I preached this sermon Sunday night, June 30, 2002.  We stopped the message and sang several of the hymns mentioned here.  Of course, you need to adapt this sermon so it mentions songs or choruses that your people know.

Some of the darkest days in our nation's history were the days when we practiced slavery.

The Black people showed remarkable spirit and faith.  Their attitude was, "I'd rather sing."

Out of their pain came some great Spirituals:

Nobody Knows the Trouble of I've Seen

There is a balm in Gilead

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder

He Never Said a Mumbling Word

"I'd rather sing" is a good philosophy.

Most of us would rather sing than cry.

Most of us would rather sing than complain.

Most of us would rather sing than think evil thoughts.

Most of us would rather sing than be angry.

Most of us would rather sing than do evil.

"I'd rather sing" is a Biblical attitude.  The Book of Psalms mentions singing on many occasions. Three of these occasions are Psalms 47:6-7, 89:1, 49:1,3

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:18-19 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; [19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

As a result of the Word of Christ and the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, our attitude should be I'd rather sing.

Using our hymnbooks, let's consider songs that we can sing that will minister to our hearts not just on Sundays, but all through the week.

I'D RATHER SING HIS PRAISE

Our praise is to be continual - Philippians 4:4, 1 Thessalonians 5:16, Hebrews 13:15

Our praise is an act of worship - Psalm 100:2

Some of the songs in our hymnbooks that encourage us to praise include:

Holy, Holy, Holy

O Worship The King

How Great Thou Art

Blessed Assurance

I'D RATHER SING OF HIS PEACE

Romans 5:1 tells us that a saved person has peace with God.

Not only do we need peace with God, but the peace of God is also promised. John 14:27, Isaiah 26:3, Philippians 4:6-7

When we become disturbed at the world situation or our own situation, we can focus on the peace of God by singing about it.

Abide With Me

Tell It to Jesus

The Haven of Rest

I'd Rather Have Jesus

It is Well With My Soul

The Solid Rock

Blessed Quietness

I'D RATHER SING A PRAYER

We are called to pray. Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 7:7-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Sometimes we wonder how to pray. Sometimes hymns that are prayers will help us express ourselves.

Breathe on me Breath of God

Send the Old Time Power

Showers of Blessing

Have Thine Own Way, Lord

King of My Life I Crown Thee Now

Take My Life and Let It Be

I'D RATHER SING OF HIS PRESENCE

In John 15:4-5 Jesus tells us to abide in Him.  Singing of His presence will help us abide in His presence.

Some hymns that help us abide:

Turn You Eyes Upon Jesus

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

Near the Cross

Face To Face

Saved By Grace

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

In The Garden

I'D RATHER SING OF PERFORMANCE (OBEDIENCE)

Obedience is an essential to our lives.  We will perform well as we obey the admonitions of some of our favorite hymns.

Trust and Obey

Onward Christian Soldiers

Joy in Serving Jesus

Take Time To Be Holy

Are Ye Able Said the Master

Who is on the Lord's Side?

Make Me A Blessing

I'D RATHER SING A PERSONAL TESTIMONY

Psalm 107:2 reminds us that we are to testify of our salvation.

We can sing our personal testimonies with hymns like:

The Old Rugged Cross

At The Cross

Standing On The Promises

O Happy Day

At Calvary

I Love To Tell The Story

Amazing Grace

As for me, I'D RATHER SING! How about you?
