GENESIS 4:1-8

A VOICE FROM THE DEAD

WALKING WITH THE GIANTS #1

Tonight we are beginning a new series of messages from the Book of Genesis that I call “Walking with the Giants”.  We want to look at the lives of men found the first book of the Bible and see what we can learn from them.  In many ways they were “giants” of faith and in what they accomplished.

Tonight we are looking at the life of a member of “Faith’s Hall of Fame” found in Hebrews 11.  We are looking at Abel, who indeed is A Voice from the Dead.

Hebrews 11:4 - By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

Of course it is difficult to talk about Abel without talking about Cain.  The Bible gives a very clear contrast between the two men.  Abel’s sacrifice was accepted by God. Cain’s was not.  The difference was that Abel acted in faith, and Cain did not. Abel is dead, but because of his faith, he still speaks.

ABEL SPEAKS OF COMPLIANCE

ABEL SPEAKS OF COMMITMENT

ABEL SPEAKS OF CONFIDENCE

ABEL SPEAKS OF CONFLICT

Adam and Eve had been created and placed in the Garden of Eden.

They had sinned against God.

God had promised a redeemer. Genesis 3:15

God had clothed Adam and Eve with animal skins.  The blood of innocent animals was shed so that they might be covered. Genesis 3:21

Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden of Eden because of their sin.

Vs. 1 – Eve had her first child and called him “Cain”, which probably means “acquired”. She said that she had gotten or acquired a man from the Lord.  Perhaps she thought that this man was the one who would bruise the head of the serpent (Satan).  If she thought this way, how wrong she was.

Vs. 2 – Another son was born.  His name was “Abel”, which means “breath” or “vapor”.  A breathe is not permanent. It doesn’t last long. Certainly this was a fitting name for a man whose life was cut off prematurely.

Cain and Abel each had respectable jobs.  Cain was a farmer. Abel was a shepherd. Undoubtedly both occupations were learned from their father, Adam.

ABEL SPEAKS OF COMPLIANCE

Vs. 3 – “in the process of time” literally means “at the end of days”.  It seems to have been a specific time of year when sacrifices were offered. Perhaps it was a time appointed by God.  Evidently this was not the first time that sacrifices were made at this time of year.

The fact that both Cain and Abel offered sacrifices at the same time is an indication that it was something they had learned from their father.

Cain’s offering was a produce offering.  He was a farmer. He brought some of his labor from the field.

Later on, God would require offerings from the ground as the “first fruits” of harvest.  However, it was not the time or place for such a sacrifice.

Vs. 4 – Abel brought an animal or animals to sacrifice.  The fact that he offered the “fat” would be an indication that he had slain the animal.

Abel’s sacrifice was acceptable to God.  We can not be sure how everyone knew that Abel’s offering was accepted and Cain’s was not.  There were times when God sent fire from Heaven upon a sacrifice. Perhaps this was one of those times.

Evidently Abel, by faith, was being compliant with the type of offering that God wanted.

In some way God had revealed to Cain and Abel that a blood sacrifice was what he required. Romans 1:17

It was the shedding of the blood of innocent animals that had covered Adam and Eve.

It was the shedding of blood of animals that was required to cover sins in the Old Testament.

Ultimately it was the shedding of blood of the sinless Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ that atoned for our sins. 1 Peter 1:18-19, Hebrews 9:22

By faith Abel was being compliant.

And today the process is no different.

By faith a true Christian has come to God God’s way!

He has become compliant. Ephesians 2:8-9

How important is compliance or obedience for the Christian after he or she is saved?  Listen to some sobering verses: John 14:21, 1 John 2:3-6, 1 Samuel 15:22-23, Romans 6:16

Compliance or obedience is one of the biggest indications that we are people of faith.

How can we say that we believe or trust God when we don’t do what He tells us to do!

ABEL SPEAKS OF COMMITMENT

Another word we can use is consecration.

Vs. 4 – By giving of the first and fat of the flock Abel was bringing the best.

It is when we are people of faith that we, like Abel will give our best.

We know the typical consecration verse, Romans 12:1

If we are truly committed to God we will want him to have what is best.

·       The best of our time

·       The best of our talent

·       The best of our thoughts

·       The best of our treasures

ABEL SPEAKS OF CONFIDENCE

It is obvious from the actions of Abel that his confidence was in God.

He had undoubtedly been told of the promise of a redeemer.

His actions show that he was trusting in what God had promised.

It is highly possible that Abel was the first human resident of Heaven.

Meanwhile it behooves us to make sure that our confidence is always in the God we claim to know, love, and serve. Psalm 121, Hebrews 11:6

ABEL SPEAKS OF CONFLICT

Vss. 5-7 – Cain was unhappy. God had not accepted his offering.  God suggested that all he needed to do was repent and do what was right and he would be accepted.

God also warned Cain that he needed to be careful.

Vs. 8 – Cain was angry with God but he was also angry with Abel.  He was angry with Abel because what he did was accepted by God and what Cain did was not accepted.

Righteous people have always been picked on or persecuted by the unrighteous.  Abel suffered at the hands of unrighteous Cain.

We are warned that the same is true for us. 2 Timothy 3:12, John 15:19-21

The enemies of God are our enemies.

Let’s accept the fact that there will be conflict in our lives.

Hebrews 11:4 - By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

John 1:1-5, 14

THE SUPERIOR SON

I have been to some good ball games, and to some superior ball games.

I have had some good steak dinners, and I've had some superior steak dinners.

I have met some good people, and I have met people who were superior in their Godliness.

When it comes to superiority however, there is none more superior than the sinless Son Of God. Our Lord Jesus is:

SUPERIOR IN HIS IDENTITY Vss. 1-2

He is eternal in His existence. Micah 5:2

He is God!

SUPERIOR IN HIS INITIATIVE Vss. 3-5

When someone takes initiative, it means that he or she gets something started.

1.     Jesus initiated creation. Vs. 3, Hebrews 1:1-2, Colossians 1:16

2.     Jesus initiated life. Vs. 4  (1 John 5:11-12)

In Him was both physical and spiritual life. You can explain the

Gospel here by using three words - SIN (Romans 3:23), SAVIOR

      (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), SELECTION (John 3:16)

3.     Jesus initiated light. Vss. 4-5

SUPERIOR IN HIS INVOLVEMENT Vs. 14

Jesus left heaven to involve Himself in our lives.

He became flesh and dwelled among us.  You might say "He pitched His tent with us."

WHY?

More often than not, I believe people should be given reasons for the rules they are given to obey.  There are times however when a parent’s answer can only be, “Because I said so, that’s why!”

There are things that all of us have been told in church in a sermon or in a Sunday School Class that have us prompted to ask, “But, why?”

You have been told that you should lean on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, and that the life you live after being saved should be by faith; but why?

You have been told that you should love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind; but why?

You have been told that you should learn about the Bible and its teachings; but why?

You have been told that you should listen to your parents, your Sunday School Teacher, and the Pastor; but why?

You have been told that you should live your life totally sold out for the Lord Jesus Christ; but why?

This morning I’m going to try to answer these questions that you might have asked at one time or another.

WHY LEAN?

You have been told that you should lean on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior; but why?

Probably the answer most of us would give to that question is, “You want to lean on Jesus as your Savior, because you don’t want to go to hell.”

Indeed, this true. John 3:36

But are there any other reasons to trust Christ, besides being afraid of going to hell?

Try this reason: Jesus has done for you what you couldn’t do for yourself.

There is at least one thing you can’t do for yourself.

You can not atone or pay for your sins.

The Bible tells us:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23

…the soul that sinneth, it shall die. Ezekiel 18:4

People have tried to be good to pay for their sins.

People have gone to church to pay for their sins.

People have been baptized to pay for their sins.

People have given money to pay for sins.

And none of it works.

Jesus has done for you, what you can’t do for yourself. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Here is another reason for leaning on Jesus as your Savior: Why pay for what is already paid for?

If Jesus already died for my sins, why should I try to pay for them too? Ephesians 2:8-9

One more reason why I should lean on Christ as my Savior: God has loved me so much that his very Son came from Heaven, suffered, and died for me.  Shouldn’t I accept that great love? John 3:16

These are a few reasons for leaning on Jesus as your Savior.

Most of you all profess to know Christ as your Savior.

Why should you lean on Him now by faith? That is, why should you live in dependence upon God’s help, and not wing it on your own?

First of all, if you haven’t discovered it already, you will find that it is impossible to live a Godly life without dependence upon God. Romans 7:19

But God gives us a better way. He tells us to live the Christian life by faith, leaning on His Son for victory. Galatians 2:20, Philippians 4:13

You did nothing good to save yourself.  Don’t expect to be able to do good on your own to live a Christian life.

WHY LOVE?

You have been told that you should love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind; but why?

There are very few of us who would ever claim not to love God.  It is not the love of God that is actually in question. It is the degree of that love.

That we should love God is understandable.  But why should we love Him above all others, to the point of always choosing Him and His way no matter what?

The answer is really quite simple and is summed up in

1 John 4:19 - We love him, because he first loved us.

Let’s think about that love.

He loved you enough to create you and to make you unique.  There is no other individual quite like you. Psalm 139:14

He also loved you enough to accept you. Ephesians 1:5-6

And here’s another wonderful reason for loving Him. Jeremiah 31:3

He has loved you forever and always will love you.

He has loved you enough to draw you to Himself for salvation.

He has loved you enough to promise that you can never be separated from that love. Romans 8:35-39

Of course, God loved us enough to send His Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to die for us.

1 John 4:10

God loves us.

Isn’t that enough reason to love Him totally in return?

WHY LEARN?

You have been told that you should learn about the Bible and its teachings; but why?

You and I have a Heavenly Father. He’s the one that loves us with an everlasting love.

Although you do not or did not have perfect earthly parents, you do have a perfect Heavenly Parent.

And just as your parents have taught you, He wants to teach you.

He wants to teach you Spiritual things.

He wants to teach you moral things.

He wants to teach you about Himself.

He wants to teach you about yourself.

He wants to teach you how to live.

Your earthly parents have and will fail you.

He will never fail you.

Learn from Him.

He has given His Word.

He has given us preachers and teachers of that Word. Ephesians 4:11-12

Did you ever learn something so you could please someone else? Why not learn so you can please God? 2 Timothy 2:15

We should also learn because we want to know God better. Philippians 3:10

WHY LISTEN?

You have been told that you should listen to your parents, your Sunday School Teacher, and the Pastor; but why?

Your parents have been given you an awesome job.

They have been commissioned by God to raise you.

They have been commissioned by God to train you.

They have been commissioned by God to teach you. Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:4

God knew that your parents would be less than perfect.

And God knows that some of you have received undeserved grief from your parents.

But God has chosen your parents for you for whatever reason.

When they are not teaching you to disobey God, you are to listen to them and obey them.

Proverbs 6:20 - My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Colossians 3:20 - Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

What about listening to your Sunday School Teachers and Pastor when they teach? It’s so easy to tune us out and consider us irrelevant.

God has given us the important job of teaching you. This is a job that we will answer to God for.

You can help us by realizing that we have a job to do.

You help us do our jobs when you pay attention and try to obey what God’s Word is teaching.

WHY LIVE?

You have been told that you should live your life totally sold out for the Lord Jesus Christ; but why?

Of course we should live a life totally sold out to Jesus Christ because we are leaning on Him, loving Him, learning from Him and listening to Him.

There is one more reason that I’d like to add to this list.

You should live a live totally sold out to Jesus Christ because He says to live such a life.

Luke 9:23-24, Matthew 10:39, Luke 14:26-27

THERE ARE REASONS TO LEAN!

THERE ARE REASONS TO LOVE!

THERE ARE REASONS TO LEARN!

THERE ARE REASONS TO LISTEN!

THERE ARE REASONS TO LIVE!
