Titus 1:10-16

THE CONTRADICTORS

Lesson #3 on Titus - Godly LIVING in the Church

A Complete Lesson

·       If you could silence anyone in America today, who would you silence and why?

·       Why is it a shame that some people we want to be silenced can’t be?

·       Why is it good for America that some that we would like to silence legally can’t be silenced?

·       When should people be silenced in the local church?

·       What right do we have within in the church to silence people?

·       Why are false teachers within the church so dangerous?

False teachers have always been a threat to the church.  They are “contradictors” who oppose sound doctrine.  Paul demanded some strict responses to those who spread lies and threaten the flock of believers found in the church. For our own edification and spiritual well being we need to answer some questions about these contradictors.

REVIEW

·       Who was Titus and what was he doing on the Isle of Crete?

·       What are some of the qualities of an elder that especially stick out to you?

·       Why are the qualities mentioned in verse 9 important in dealing with contradictors?

·       Let’s answer some important questions about contradictors.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? – Vs. 10

·       Paul begins by saying there are “many”!  How many false doctrines and cults within Christianity can we name?

·       Why are there so many different false teachings out there?

·       “Unruly” – They were rebellious, rebelling against the doctrine and moral teachings that God gave in his word! God hates rebellion.

1 Samuel 15:22-23 - …Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…

·       “Vain talkers” – Fictitious stories were evidently told by these people. Their talk was empty and worthless.

·       “Deceivers” – They were playing with the minds of the Cretans. Their purpose was to trick and to fool. The worst ones were of the “circumcision”. What did Paul mean by that term?

WHY MUST THEY BE STOPPED? – Vs. 7

·       Vs. 11 – Paul was very emphatic.  The mouths of these people must be closed.  Why was he so adamant?

·       What did Paul mean when he said whole houses were subverted?  Do you know of any group(s) that take this approach today?

·       According to verse 11, what is the real motive of many false teachers?  Can you think of any examples of this happening?

·       Vs. 12 – A certain philosopher by the name of Epiminides, who lived about 600 B.C., made these statements about the Cretans. These comments would have also been true of the Jews who lived on the Isle of Crete all their lives.

·       They were liars. “To play the Cretan” meant to lie.  Lying is common today. Why?  Are Christians any better than anyone else?

Ephesians 4:25 - Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

·       They were “evil beasts” because they lived to please their sensual appetites. They lived like a bunch of animals!  They were savage and cruel.

·       When it says they were “slow bellies”, it means that they were “lazy gluttons”.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE? – Vss. 13-14

·       Paul agreed with the opinion of their ancient prophet. And notice the solution is a sharp rebuke.  When is a sharp rebuke necessary?  What should be the motive behind a sharp rebuke?

·       When give in love a sharp rebuke can be very effective. What should be our response if a sharp rebuke is not heeded?

2 John 1:7-11 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. [8] Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. [9] Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.

He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. [10] If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: [11] For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

·       Vs. 14 - The Jews were known for their fanciful myths about their ancestors, and their man-made laws. The Jews added many rules and regulations to God’s law.

·       According to verse 14, what is the tragic result of these teachings?  Why should this concern us?

WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THEIR PROBLEM? – Vss. 15-16

·       Vs. 15 – All things are pure to the pure, but when a person is not pure, nothing is pure.

Luke 6:45 - A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

·       What makes a person pure?

·       What makes a person impure?

Matthew 15:18-19 - But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. [19] For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

·       Vs. 16 - False teachers claim to know God, but by their very acts they deny Him.

·       What does verse 16 say about the type of people false teachers are?  What should we be ready to do?

This is an elaboration on a previously shared outline.

James 1:18-27

THE SERMON SAMPLER’S GUIDE

James has something to say to those who listen to the Word of God preached. He gives what I would call "The Sermon Sampler's Guide”.  James shows us that listening properly to a sermon will involve:

REACTION TO THE SERMON - Vss. 18-20

Vs. 18 shows us that a man is forgiven of his sin and saved when he is born again. The first birth was a natural birth. A man’s second birth takes place when he acknowledges his sin, and trusts that Jesus Christ paid for it all on cross of Calvary, and that he was buried and rose again. He trusts Christ alone as the way to Heaven. John 1:12-13

James also points out that the new birth takes place in response to the preaching of the "word of truth" or the word of God. A person is influenced to trust Christ when the Word of God is preached concerning salvation. It is the preaching of the cross from the Word of God that is effective in leading people to Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:18

The ministry of the preached word does not end with salvation. The Word of God is to be preached to those of us who are saved. Preaching to the saved accomplishes other things besides salvation:

2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Timothy 4:2

Vs. 19 - Just as we were born into the family of God by responding to the Word of Truth, we will grow spiritually as we respond to the preaching of the Word of truth. There are three reactions we are to have to the sermon in this verse.

1. Swift to Hear.

“Swift to Hear” means being ready willing, and able to listen to what is being said.

I think of being swift to hear in two ways.

First, I am swift to hear if I show up to church regularly.

By showing up, I am not only saying “I am here to worship God.”  I am also saying, “I am here to listen to what God has to say through the speaker.”

The second way I must be swift to hear is my attitude towards the sermon.  I must force my mind and my heart to listen to what is being said.

The reason that I am to be swift to hear is because the Word of God is coming to me from God’s servant, using God’s Word, to bring God’s message. We should actually be listening to hear what God has to say through God’s man.

We should imitate the Thessalonians, of whom Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 2:13: For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

2. Slow to Speak

Many of us speak before we think. The preacher says something we do not like and our reaction is hasty.

The preacher isn’t always right, but often we react before we have meditated on what he has said. How often have we thought someone wrong when we’ve heard their ideas, but the more we thought about what they had to say, the more we thought that they were right!

When we criticize a sermon before thinking it through we are accomplishing some not so nice things.

·       We are sowing discord among the brethren in the church.

·       We are giving our families a negative attitude about the church and God’s servant.

·       We are setting ourselves up as another’s judge.

Check out what the preacher says with the Word of God. If he’s wrong show him. If he’s right, do what the Word of God says.

3.     Slow to wrath

Sometimes the preacher will make us angry by what He has said.  Even if the preacher is incorrect, the wrong kind of anger will accomplish nothing.  Many times we are angry about what the preacher has said because we are under conviction.

Vs. 20 tells us that there is a right kind of anger. That anger is a righteous anger. But more often than not our anger is man’s anger. We are personally hurt, personally bitter, personally holding a grudge.

This anger is often present before the sermon begins. Don’t expect to get much out of the sermon if you’re angry with the preacher about something else.

RECEPTION OF THE SERMON - Vs. 21

Verse 21 is basically telling us to get rid of anything we know to be sin in our lives. We are to confess it, and make it right.  1 John 1:9

As we confess our sins we are helping our hearts to be ready to receive the message that God has for us with a receptive heart.

James 1:21 - Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

The reception of the engrafted word is able to save our souls.

Wait a minute!

I’m already saved!

Yes, if you know the Lord Jesus as your Savior, you are.

However, the humbly received word received in good soil will save you from the problems caused by sin now.

It will save you from a lot of grief.

REPRODUCTION OF THE SERMON - Vss. 22-29

What is a good sermon? A good sermon is one that sends you out the door doing things differently than when you walked in the door.  The best sermon samplers take what they have heard and reproduce it in their lives. A good sermon sampler is a "doer of the Word".

James shows us at least 3 ways that a good sermon sampler is a doer of the word:

The best sermon samplers take what they have heard and reproduce it in their lives. They put the Word of God into shoe leather!

Vs. 22 – There are many samplers of sermons in our churches, but there are few doers.

If you are just a hearer of the word and not a doer you are fooling someone. You are not fooling God and you are probably not fooling others.  You are just fooling yourself!

Vss. 23-24 – A person who is a hearer is like a person who looks in a mirror and forgets what he looks like. A mere hearer of the word looks into the mirror, the Word of God, and then walks away and forgets what the Word of God says.

Vs. 25 - A doer of the Word looks into the perfect law of liberty, the law of Christ, and does what the Word of God says and he is blessed.

A doer of the Word is free to serve God the way He should be served.

Vss. 26-27 contain a challenge from James to the one who thinks that he is religious.  A truly religious person does three things as a doer of the Word.

1. He bridles his tongue. Vs. 26

2. He assists the fatherless and widows. Vs. 27

3. He keeps Himself pure and unspotted from the world.

Are you a good sermon sampler?  If not, become a better one through:

REACTION TO THE SERMON

·       Swift to Hear

·       Slow to Speak

·       Slow to Wrath

RECEPTION OF THE SERMON - Vs. 21
