THE KING’S PRIORITY – Vs. 13

Ephesians 3:20-21 - Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

THE COMFORT – Vs. 5

For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

THE CONDITION – Vs. 6

For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Titus 2:1-10

LESSONS

GODLY LIVING IN THE CHURCH #4 on Titus

A Complete Lesson

·       What are some lessons that children need to learn?

·       What are some lessons that teenagers need to learn?

·       What are some lessons that young adults need to learn?

·       What are some lessons that senior citizens need to learn?

No matter what our age or lot in life there seems to be no lack for lessons that need to be learned. In Titus 2:1-10 Paul shares with us some lessons that different groups need to learn within the church. These lessons, when learned, lead the church into a Godly lifestyle.

RETROSPECT – 1:15-16

·       Paul is finishing up talking about the false teachers we have called contradictors.

·       Vs. 15 – All things are pure to the pure, but to the impure nothing is pure. Luke 6:45, Matthew 15:18-19

·       Vs. 16 – False teachers claim to know God, but by their very acts they deny Him.

LESSONS FOR OLDER MEN - Vss. 1-2

·       Vs. 1 – Why is good doctrine not enough?

·       The things that are becoming to good doctrine involve good behavior.  Not only are Christians to believe correctly, but they are to live correctly. Good behavior compliments good doctrine.

·       Paul takes time to share the lessons that each key group within in the church needs to learn.

·       Vs. 2 – Paul begins with what the older men need to be encouraged to do.  Why do you think he starts with them?

·       First, they are to be “sober minded”.  This came to mean being sober in one’s thinking.  A sober minded person thinks before he acts. Why is that important?

·       Grave = “Worthy of respect”.  This is someone who shows serious progress in the Christian life.

·       Temperate = self control. Fleshly appetites are to be under control. Proverbs 25:28

·       The aged men are also to be “sound” or healthy:

1.     Sound in the faith – the whole body of truth

2.     Sound in the love – John 13:34-35

3.     Sound in the patience  - James 5:7-8

LESSONS FOR OLDER WOMEN - Vs. 3

·       An aged Godly saint is a blessing whether male or female.

·       An aged Godly woman has four qualities mentioned here.

·       “Behavior as becometh holiness” – This is respect for the things of God, or reverence.  She worships and serves God in a reverent way.

·       “Not false accusers” – Slander is not to be part of the older woman’s life.  She is not to spread critical evaluations of others.  Why is this dangerous?

·       “Not given to wine” – Alcohol consumption was to be limited.

·       “Teachers of good things” – What mission field has God given to older women?  Have you ever been impacted by such a woman?

LESSONS FOR YOUNGER WOMEN - Vss. 4-5

·       “To love their husbands” – Why do young women sometimes need to be reminded to love their husbands?

·       “To love their children” – In what situations might a woman need to be reminded to love her children?

·       “Discreet” = sober minded

·       “Purity” – In what ways does a woman need to be pure? Why is that hard sometimes?

·       “Keepers at home” – Does this mean that a woman should never work outside of the home?  What part should a career have in a woman’s life?

·       “Good” = kind

·       “Obedient to their own husbands” – How obedient should a wife be to her husband? Ephesians 5:22-25

LESSONS FOR YOUNGER MEN - Vss. 6

·       Vs. 6 – The young men were to be “sober minded” or “sensible”.  They were to think clearly and be under control.  Why is this command a challenge to a young man?

LESSONS FOR PASTORS – Vss. 7-8

·       Vs. 7 – Titus, who was a pastor, needed to model good works. Why does a pastor need to be an especially good role model?

·       “Doctrine” – Why is doctrine often ignored in the church?  Why is correct doctrine important?

·       What is “uncorrupt” doctrine?

·       When a person is “grave” he is dignified.  How should a pastor show dignity?

·       Vs. 8 – How would you describe “sound speech”?

·       According to this verse, what are the benefits of sound speech and good behavior?

LESSONS FOR EMPLOYEES - Vss. 9-10

·       Vs. 9 - I believe the closest thing we have to servants today is employees.

·       Why is our behavior as employees important?

·       How do we go about treating employers well?

·       Why are we tempted to talk back to some employers and how does that hurt the cause of Christ?

·       Vs. 10 – “purloining = embezzlement” – Why is stealing from an employer tempting to some?

·       “Good fidelity” refers to faithfulness.  When we are faithful we “adorn”, or make the doctrine of God look attractive. Why?

This is an elaboration on a previously shared outline.

PROUD TO BE

I’m proud to be an American.  I’m proud to have served in military service. I’m proud of the freedom that Americans enjoy. However, being an American is not priority.  Being a Christian is!  A Christian is a believer in and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. We carry His name. I am far prouder of being a Christian than I am of being an American.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHO JESUS IS

·       JESUS IS THE BREAD OF LIFE

John 6:47-48 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. [48] I am that bread of life.

·       JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

John 8:12 - …I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

·       JESUS IS THE DOOR

John 10:9 - I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

·       JESUS IS THE SHEPHERD

John 10:11 - I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

John 10:14 - I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

·       JESUS IS THE RESURRECTION

John 11:25-26 - Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: [26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

·       JESUS IS THE  WAY, TRUTH AND LIFE

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

·       JESUS IS THE VINE

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. [5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15:7 - If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS HAS DONE!

Isaiah 53:3-6 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. [4] Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. [6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHO I AM

·       I AM A CHILD OF GOD

John 1:12-13 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Galatians 4:6-7 - And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. [7] Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

·       I AM A CITIZEN OF HEAVEN

Philippians 3:20 - For our conversation (citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

·       I AM A CONQUEROR

Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Romans 8:37-39 - Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. [38] For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS IS DOING

·       HE IS KEEPING ME

John 10:27-30 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: [28] And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. [29] My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. [30] I and my Father are one.

·       HE IS INDWELLING ME

John 14:16-18 - And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall

be in you. [18] I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

·       HE IS EMPOWERING ME

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Ephesians 1:19-20 - And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, [20] Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

·       HE IS INTERCEDING FOR ME

Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 7:24-25 - But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. [25] Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHERE I AM GOING

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 - For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

I’M PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

BECAUSE OF WHO JESUS IS!

BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS HAS DONE!

BECAUSE OF WHO I AM

BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS IS DOING

BECAUSE OF WHERE I AM GOING

Are you proud to be a Christian?

THEN ACT LIKE IT!
