Psalm 108

A WAY OF LIFE

(A complete lesson)

·       How is your “way of life” similar to your neighbor’s?

·       How is your “way of life” different from your unsaved neighbor’s?

·       How should our ways of life as Christians be the same?

I see Psalm 108 as a pattern that we can follow as a way of life.  As we follow the procedures laid out in this Psalm, we will have a life of joy, peace, productivity, and victory.

Psalm 108 is an interesting psalm. It is actually a compilation of two of David’s psalms. Verses 1-5 are almost identical to Psalm 57:7-11.  Verses 6-13 are almost identical to Psalm 60:5-12.

·       Why do you think God inspired someone to combine two of David’s psalms together?

DETERMINED TO PRAISE – Vss. 1-3

·       Vs. 1 - The word “fixed” means “steadfast”.

·       In what way should each Christian have a steadfast heart?

·       What are the benefits of a steadfast heart?

·       Isaiah 26:3-4 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. [4] Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

·       Why must singing and giving praise to God be a willful decision on my part?

·       What has God done to make that decision to praise God easier?  See Ephesians 5:18-19

·       Vs. 2 – The instruments of David’s day included the lyre and harp. David would figuratively wake them up so that he could praise God.

·       I myself will awake early can mean “I will wake up the dawn.”  In other words, David would be busy praising God before the sun came up.  Why is praising God in the morning helpful for a good day?

·       Vs. 3 – How will a determined life filled with praises to God affect our testimonies?

DELIGHTED IN MERCY AND TRUTH – Vs. 4

·       The word mercy has been translated “steadfast love”.

·       How have you seen God’s steadfast love in your life lately?

·       How does God advertise his steadfast love “above the Heavens”?

·       Why should I be delighted in God’s truth?

·       How does God advertise His truth?

DESIROUS OF GOD’S GLORY – Vss. 5-6

·       Vs. 5 – Why should we be desirous that God be exalted and glorified?

·       What responsibility do we have in making sure that God is glorified?

·       Vs. 6 – How is God glorified when He delivers us?

·       What does “save with thy right hand” imply?

·       What right do we have to pray for deliverance?

·       Psalm 50:15 - And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

DESTINED FOR VICTORY – Vss. 7-9

·       Vss. 7-8 – Various parts of Israel are named.  There will be a day when all of the territory that God has promised Israel will be under Israel’s jurisdiction.  When will that day be?

·       Vs. 9 – All of Israel’s enemies will be defeated.

·       In what ways can the Christian experience victory now?

·       Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

·       Romans 8:37-39 - Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. [38] For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

·       John 14:13-14 - And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

·       In what ways will Christians have victory in the future?

·       Romans 8:16-17 - The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: [17] And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

·       1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 - For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

DEPENDENT ON GOD – Vss. 10-13

·       Vs. 10 – Who was Esau and what was Edom?

·       They had a city in the rocks called Petra. It was almost impregnable.

·       Vs. 12 – Why is this such an important verse for Christians to remember?

·       Vs. 13 – What does this verse prompt us to remember?

**************************************************************************

Mark 3:13-19

APPOINTED APOSTLES

RETREAT – Vs. 13

RECRUITMENT – Vs. 14

RESOURCE (POWER) – Vs. 15

ROLL CALL – Vss. 16-19 – The names of the disciples.

************************************************************************************

Luke 5:1-11

FISHING TRIP

THE COMMAND – Vs. 4 – Peter was to launch out into the deep and put down his nets.

THE CONCESSION – Vs. 5 – Peter had worked all night and caught nothing, but was willing to do

                                                what Jesus said.

THE CATCH – Vss. 6-7 – It was phenomenal!

THE CONVERSION – Vss. 8-9 – Peter (and those with Him) was a changed man.

THE CALL – Vss. 10-11 – From that point on they were to catch men.

ACTS 11:24 etc.

 A GOOD MAN

I want us to consider what it means to be a good man or a good woman according to the Scriptures.

A GOOD MAN IS FILLED - Acts 11:24

For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

In the early church, Barnabas was Mr. Encouragement.

We meet him first in Acts 4:36-37

It was Barnabas who helped Paul get established in the church at Jerusalem. Acts 9:27

When Gentiles started to get saved, it was Barnabas, Mr. Encouragement that was sent to investigate.

Acts 11:19-23

It was also Barnabas, realizing that these new Christians needed a teacher, who recruited Paul into a teaching ministry. Acts 11:25-26

It was also Barnabas who went with Paul on the first missionary journey, and it was Barnabas who helped rehabilitate Mark, after Mark's initial failure in ministry.

Barnabas was indeed a good man, and in Acts 11:24, we see two things that helped make him a good man.  Barnabas was a good man because, first of all, He was filled with the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost was promised by the Lord Jesus. John 14:16-18, John 16:12-14

The Holy Spirit lives inside of every Christian. Romans 8:9

When Barnabas was filled with the Spirit, he was simply doing what God wants every Christian to do.  God wants every Christian to be under the influence of the Spirit. See Ephesians 5:18-21 and Galatians 5:22-23

A person who is filled with the Holy Spirit can not help being a good man or woman.

May I recommend to you that to be filled with the Spirit you should:

1.     Confess your sin

2.     Submit to God's will

3.     Ask to be filled

And being filled with the Spirit is a continual process.

Barnabas was filled with the Spirit and He was a good man.

Barnabas was also filled with faith. Hebrews 3:12-13, 11:1-2, 6, 12:1-2

A GOOD MAN FOLLOWS - Psalm 37:23

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.

How we spend our time is of the utmost importance. Psalm 90:12, Ephesians 5:15-17

A GOOD MAN IS FAITHFUL - Micah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

From the beginning God has wanted the things mentioned in this verse to be true of his followers.  These are good things that make a good man or woman.  They don't save a person, only faith in Christ does that.  But these things found in a believer will please God.  And notice each one of these things is not something to be done sporadically, but continually and consistently over a lifetime.

·        DO JUSTLY

The believer should do whatever is right.

If it's in business or work, a believer should have ethics that all his business dealings are above board.

If it's in the neighborhood, a believer should have the reputation of doing what's right, even if it hurts financially.

If it's in the home, Mom or Dad should have the reputation with their kids of doing what is right.  In fact it is better for a parent to change his or her mind, rather than not do what is right.

·        LOVE MERCY

Some of the toughest people in the world can show mercy once in awhile.  And some can show mercy in a grudging sort of way.

However we are to love mercy.  And to love mercy means that we want to show kindness to people who may or may not deserve it.

In Psalm 136 there is a phrase referring to God is repeated in every verse, and his mercy endureth forever. If this is the character of our God, let us endeavor to show mercy to people whenever we can.

·        WALK HUMBLY WITH GOD

There are many great men in the Bible, but two that stick out in my mind are Enoch and Noah.  They had something in common.

They walked with God.

To me, walking humbly with God means that I know that I need God's guidance.

Walking humbly with God means that I know that I need God's help.

Walking humbly with God means that I know that I need God's fellowship.

A GOOD MAN IS FRUITFUL - Luke 6:45

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

The words that come out a person's mouth are fruit of sorts.

It can be good fruit or bad.

A good person has good words proceeding out his mouth. Proverbs 10:19, 15:1-2, 25:11-12, Ephesians 4:29

What comes out of the mouth is an indication of what is in the heart.  So if we are going to have fruitful coming out of the mouth we must watch the heart!

Proverbs 4:23 - Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

The good news is as I keep my heart under the control of the Holy Spirit what is coming out of lips will be fruitful.

A GOOD MAN IS FILLED - Acts 11:24

A GOOD MAN FOLLOWS - Psalm 37:23

A GOOD MAN IS FAITHFUL - Micah 6:8

A GOOD MAN IS FRUITFUL - Luke 6:45

This is an expanded version of a previously shared outline.

ON THE MONEY

We don’t know how much longer the national motto will be “In God we trust”.  Nor do we know how much longer the phrase “In God we trust” will be on our currency.

But we do not need “In God we trust” to be on the currency or the national motto for us to make it our own personal motto.

It certainly makes sense that as Christians we would trust in God.  We should believe in Him, rely on Him, and trust in Him.  The wisest thing that we can do is make trust in God a habit and not something we only do when we have problems.  Trusting in God should be a way of life.

In the Book of Psalms, the word trust appears 50 times.  This morning we want to encourage you to trust God and His Son, as we look at some of the aspects of trust as found in the book of Psalms.

“IN GOD WE TRUST”:

REDEMPTIVE TRUST

Psalm 34:22 - The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

In order to truly trust God we must begin with an issue that is of utmost importance to God. That issue is eternal life. You might be tired of hearing me tell you in as many words that you are no-good, rotten sinner and that you don’t deserve to go to Heaven!

But I’m just telling you what God says! Romans 3:10-18

Ezekiel 18:4 - Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

We need help. God demands punishment for our sin. God demands eternal death for our sin. But now the good news:

The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants:

The price was paid for our sins by the Lord Himself when He died for us on the cross at Calvary.

Isaiah 53:5-6

So, the Lord redeems the souls of His servants.

How do we know if we are His servants or not?

I mean, I’d hate to die thinking I was God’s servant and then finding out that I wasn’t!

The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

According to this verse, the ones that are God’s servants are the ones who trust or take refuge in Him.

That’s exactly what we do when we place our faith in God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ!

When I trust Jesus as my Savior I admit that I am not good enough to save myself or earn my own way to Heaven. I take refuge in the shed blood of Christ for my sins! Ephesians 2:8-9

Notice that Psalm 34:22 concludes … and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

The Word desolate means “condemned”.  When our faith is in Christ our sins have been paid for, that’s what redemption is! When we are redeemed, we are not condemned. John 3:18

RESOURCEFUL TRUST

Psalm 56:3 - What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Notice that trust is always a decision on my part.

I can choose to be uptight or I can choose to trust.

I can choose to worry or I can choose to trust.

I can choose to panic or I can choose to trust.

God is there as my resource. I must choose to trust or pay the price of anxiety, fear, worry, high blood pressure, etc. etc.

Psalm 28:7 - The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

When my trust is in God I am trusting in His strength.

I’m not relying on my own ability, but His.

When it comes to our anxieties, our worries, our cares, our need for strength, we have a God who will be our strength if we let Him.  We need to trust Him! He will be our help!

RELIANT TRUST

Psalm 112:7 - He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.

A fixed heart is a reliant heart.

A fixed heart is a heart that is already focused on God.

When there is a possibility of bad news I need to be already focused on God.

When there is bad or even tragic news, I need to be focused on God.

If I am already living a life of trust in the good times, I will not go into a panic during the bad times.

Isaiah 41:10

We trust the Lord when we continually come to Him in prayer by faith. Psalm 55:22

We trust the Lord when we read His Word, study His Word, have it preached to us, and believe it and obey it. Psalm 119:10-11

RELIABLE TRUST

Psalm 18:2 - The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

We should trust God because He is trustworthy!

He is my “rock”.

A rock speaks of strength.

A rock speaks of protection.

A rock speaks of permanence.

God is all these things for those who trust Him!

A fortress is a stronghold. It is a place of protection. It is a position from which to fight. There is no stronger fortress than God!

Think of God as your deliverer. Ultimately, He is the only true hope that we have!  If I am to be rescued, He is the one who will rescue!

God is my God! He is deity! He is the ruler of the universe.

God is my strength. When you have a problem, who do you rely on? Do you rely on yourself, your spouse, your friends, the government, or do you rely on God for strength?

A buckler is a shield.

A horn speaks of strength.

Of course, a high tower is a place to hide.

This verse is telling us that God is reliable!

Psalm 125:1 - They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

Mount Zion is the hill on which Jerusalem is built.

It is a solid mountain, rock, not going anywhere anytime soon!

It was the home of the temple, the house of God, and the throne of David the king.

There will always be a Mount Zion, because there will always be a Jerusalem.

We are told that we will be like Mount Zion if we rely on the Lord.

Like Mt. Zion, we have a firm foundation, the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11

Like Mt. Zion we have the Spirit of God dwelling in us. 1 Corinthians 3:16

Like Mt. Zion, we have a king, the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:19-22

REFLECTIVE TRUST

Psalm 20:7 - Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

Trust involves having a good memory.

Trust involves reflecting on the God whom we serve and relying on Him.

There are those who trust man-made and natural things like chariots and horses.

But the person who trusts God puts no confidence in man as his ultimate deliverer.

RESTING TRUST

Psalm 36:7 - How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

God loves you! His steadfast love is towards you!

Therefore we are to come to Him to Him for help and protection, and we are to rest!

REJOICING TRUST

Psalm 5:11 - But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

When I am trusting God, I can rejoice because:

·       The God who runs the universe is helping me.

·       The God who has made me His child is helping me.

·       The God who defends me is helping me.

·       The God who, I should love with all my heart, all my soul and all my mind, wants me to be joyful in Him!

REWARDED TRUST

Psalm 84:12 - O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

I am rewarded with the blessings of God who blesses the one who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:8 - O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Psalm 31:19 - Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

Summing this verse up quickly, God pours out His goodness to those who fear Him and for those who publicly trust Him!

ON THE MONEY!

IN GOD WE TRUST:

REDEMPTIVE TRUST

RESOURCEFUL TRUST

RELIANT TRUST

RELIABLE TRUST
