SERMON SEEDS FOR SEPTEMBER 10, 2007

Genesis 50:20 etc.

MEANT FOR GOOD

"...ye thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good..."

The life of Joseph is perhaps the best Old Testament example we have of the accuracy of Romans 8:28.  The sale of  Joseph as a slave was meant for harm by his brothers. The end result was Joseph becoming prime minister of Egypt, becoming reunited with his family, and saving their lives. Joseph endured many trials but God "meant it for good."

JOSEPH WAS HONEST, BUT HUMILIATED Chapter 37

JOSEPH WAS STEADFAST, BUT SLANDERED Chapter 39

JOSEPH WAS FAITHFUL, BUT FORGOTTEN Chapter 40

WHAT WE NEED

ROMANS 6-8 – NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIVING #1

Please turn to 1 John 2:3-6.

Have you ever noticed that what children want and what they need are two different things?

Have you ever noticed that what teens want and what teens need are two different things?

Have you ever noticed that what adults want and what adults need are two different things?

Have you ever noticed that what you want and what you need are two different things?

As your pastor, my job is not to give you what you want, but what you need!

As your pastor, my job is not to give us, self included, not what we want, but what we need.

Because I need to give us what we need and not what we want, I am not finishing the brief series of messages I started but am moving on to something else.

In introducing our next series of messages, which I feel will do more to meet our needs; I want us to consider two things:

WE HAVE A PROBLEM – 1 John 2:3-6

If I ask you if you know that you are going to Heaven, you just might say yes!

Then, if I ask you how you know you are going to Heaven, you just might say “Because I trusted Jesus as my Savior,” or “Because I asked Jesus to come into my heart.”

There are good reasons for answering the question this way.

Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

True belief in Jesus Christ brings eternal life. Acts 16:31

But wait! Just saying we know Jesus as our Savior is not enough! Matthew 7:21

If we truly know Jesus as our Savior and are going to Heaven there is going to be more than lip service!

1 John 2:3 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

We know for sure that we know Jesus as our Savior if we have a pattern in our lives of keeping His commandments. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Because the Spirit of God now lives inside of us we have a desire to keep His commandments.

John 14:15

So how are you doing in keeping the Lord’s commandments, both those He gave while He lived here on earth and those He gave through His followers in the Bible?   Are you even trying to keep His commands?

LET’S TAKE INVENTORY!

·       Are you forgiving others? Luke 17:3-4, Ephesians 4:32

Is there anyone in your life that you haven’t really forgiven?

·       Jesus gave the Great Commission. Matthew 28:19-20

When Jesus said “teach all nations”, by teaching he meant “make disciples”.  Are you sharing your faith and striving to lead others to faith in Christ?

By baptizing them, it means that after they are saved they are to be baptized. Are you encouraging those you lead to the Lord to be baptized?

Let’s back up a minute. Have you been baptized as a believer or as a baby?  How can you encourage others to be baptized as a believer if you haven’t been baptized yourself?

And Jesus also said in this passage to teach new converts

…Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:

Are you teaching and encouraging others to obey the Lord’s teachings?

·       We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Rejoice evermore. [17] Pray without ceasing. [18] In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. How are obedient are you?

·       How’s your thought life? Philippians 4:8

·       How’s your faithfulness in church attendance and encouraging of other Christians?                   Hebrews 10:24-25

·       How are you at seeking righteousness and the Kingdom of God? Matthew 5:6, Matthew 6:33

·       How good are you at loving God and others? Matthew 22:37-40

·       What about telling the truth? Do you always tell it? Ephesians 4:25

·       What about stealing? Do you take anything that doesn’t belong to you? Ephesians 4:28

1 John 2:3 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

You say you know Jesus as your Savior. Are you striving to keep the commandments I’ve just shared?  How about some of the ones that I haven’t shared?

1 John 2:4 - He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

John is saying, “If you claim to know God and the Lord Jesus and don’t obey His commands, you are lying! The truth is not inside of you!” Liar!

Can anyone keep His commandments perfectly? No!

1 John 1:8 - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:10 - If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

But if on a regular basis obeying God and following Jesus is not on your mind and heart, you have a big problem!

So, how do we know that we are in Him? We keep His commandments.

There’s more!

1 John 2:5 - But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

If we keep His word our love for God is perfected.

Part of keeping His Word will be identifying, confessing and forsaking sin!

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Proverbs 28:13 - He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

If our love for God is being perfected because we are being obedient, we will know that are in Him.

But wait! There’s more!

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

If we say that we are Christians and that we are abiding, resting, staying close to Christ, our lives should show it!

We are to walk as he walked!

Jesus said himself said in Luke 9:23-24 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

John 12:26 - If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

So we are to walk as Jesus walked.  How did He walk?

·       Jesus walked faithfully.

He obeyed God.

He submitted to the will of God.

He walked in fellowship with God.

·       Jesus walked fervently. John 4:31-34

·       Jesus walked forcefully. He walked in the power of the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:16,

     Luke 4:1, 14,

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Jesus walked faithfully. Are you faithful?

Jesus walked fervently. How fervent are you in doing God’s work?

Jesus walked forcefully. – Are you walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s review!

1 John 2:3-4 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. [4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

If we are not striving to keep His commandments we have a problem!

1 John 2:5 - But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

If the love of God is not being perfected in us, we have a problem.

[6] He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

If we are not walking as Jesus walked, fervently, faithfully, forcefully, we have a problem.

Our problem is either that we have never been saved or we have become backslidden.

You either need to repent and be saved, or you need to repent, confessing and turning away from your sins! Isaiah 1:18, 55:6-7

Beloved, part of our problem is this; we think the words “normal” and average mean the save thing.

We look at other “Christians” and think that because we act like they do we are normal.  No, we are not normal, but we are average.  It is the average person who is just like mostly everyone else.

God doesn’t want you be average. He wants you to be normal. To be normal is live up to a norm or a standard. The normal Christian lives up to the standards that Christ has set.  Like I said, most of us “Christians” are average but we are not normal!

WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

WE HAVE PROMISES

We really have problems.  But as Christians, we also have promises.

1 John 5:3-5 - For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. [4] For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. [5] Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Romans 8:1-4 - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. [3] For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: [4] That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

2 Corinthians 2:14 - Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

We have promises of victory over sin in this life!

We don’t have to be average.

We can be normal!

What we need as a church family is to be normal. That’s what we need.

Romans 6-8 tell us how to live a normal, victorious Christian life! That is what we going to study on Sunday Mornings for a while. The series is called “Living Victoriously”.

But this morning I want you to get started by first making sure that you are truly saved.

And if you are truly saved, repent from the sins that keep you from living the Christian life and ask God to teach you how to live victoriously.

I am not asking you to do what I haven’t already done myself.  I have identified and confessed many things to the Lord and by His grace, I am forsaking them.

1 John 2:3-6 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. [4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. [5] But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. [6] He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

WE HAVE PROMISES

PRAYER REVISITED

(A COMPLETE LESSON)

·       What have you learned about prayer in the last year?

·       Why are there so many books, Bible studies, classes, and sermons about prayer?

·       In spite of all the teaching and preaching we have heard and read about prayer, it is still a topic that needs to be revisited by us.  Why?

THE PRIVACY OF PRAYER

Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

John 15:7 - If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

·       Private prayer is personal. It gives me a private audience with the ruler of the universe.

·       Private prayer allows me to pour out my heart to a God who cares and listens. 1 Peter 5:7

·       Private prayer brings me personally to the “Throne of Grace”. Hebrews 4:14-16

·       Private prayer gives me intimacy with God and the promise of public answers.

·       Why do we shun away from private prayer?

THE POWER OF PRAYER

James 5:16 – Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

·       How would you describe fervent prayer?  Why do we often lack fervency?

James 5:17-18 - Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. [18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

1 Kings 18:37 - Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

·       Elijah cared enough to pray earnestly for a drought because he was concerned about the righteousness of God. Elijah cared enough to pray down fire from Heaven.

·       What are some appropriate prayers we should be praying for the Spiritual needs of our congregation?

Mark 11:22-24 – And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. [23] For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. [24] Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

·       What do the verses above tell you about the power of prayer?

THE PERSISTENCE OF PRAYER

Luke 18:1-8 - And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; [2] Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: [3] And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. [4] And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; [5] Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. [6] And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. [7] And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? [8] I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

·       How are we to be like the widow in this story?

·       Why does God love persistent prayer?

·       How is God different from the unjust judge?

·       What does Luke 11:5-13 add to the concept of persistent prayer?

THE PARTNERSHIP OF PRAYER

1 Timothy 2:1-6 - I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. [3] For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; [4] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. [5] For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; [6] Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

·       “Supplications” means to ask for what is needed.

·       “Prayers” is the general word for prayer and would

       include worship.

·       “Intercessions” would include praying for others.

·       “Giving of thanks” reminds us to be grateful as a

       congregation.

·       According to this passage, what are some of the things we should be praying for and why?

·       What motivation do we have to pray for the souls of others?

1 Timothy 2:8 - I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

·       What hinders the prayers of a congregation?

THE PATTERN OF PRAYER

Matthew 6:9-13 - After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

·       Let us talk through this prayer and pick out the specific things we should be praying for according to this text.

GETTING ONE’S SHARE

(The word “portion” in Scripture)

·       What are some things you’d like to have your share of?

·       Why are people concerned about “getting their share”?

·       The Lord cares that you get your share.  How do we know this?

The word “portion” refers to an allotment or a share.  The word appears several times in Scripture and shows how various people get their share.

A PORTION FOR THE LORD

Deuteronomy 32:9 - For the Lord's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

Psalm 23:1, Psalm 100:3, John 10:27-28, Galatians 3:26

A DOUBLE PORTION FOR SERVICE

2 Kings 2:9 - And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

Acts 1:8, Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 5:18-21, Ephesians 6:18

A PORTION FOR MINISTERS

2 Chronicles 31:4 - Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the Lord.

Luke 10:7, 1 Timothy 5:17-18, 1 Corinthians 9:13-14

A PORTION FROM MINISTERS

Luke 12:42-44 - And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? [43] Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. [44] Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

2 Timothy 4:2, 1 Peter 5:2

A PORTION FOR THE WICKED

Psalm 11:6 - Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

Psalm 1:6, Psalm 9:17

A PORTION FOR ME

Psalm 16:5 - The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

Psalm 73:26 - My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Psalm 119:57 - Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.

Psalm 142:5 - I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

A PORTION FOR JESUS

Isaiah 53:10-12 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. [11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. [12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

A PORTION OF HOPE

Lamentations 3:24 - The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

A PORTION FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

Daniel 1:8 - But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

1 Corinthians 10:31, Romans 14:17
