DO YOU BELIEVE IT? - A.M. 9/23/07
ROMANS 6-8 NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIVING #2
You do not actually believe something until you act on it. James 2:17, 2:26
Last week we shared 1 John 2:3-6.
Basically we said, that if you claim to be a Christian and are not obeying Gods commands, and not living the way Jesus lived, you are in big trouble!
You can not be a born-again Christian and live as you please!
We also gave you good news last week! 1 John 5:3-5
The true Christian is an over-comer! We have the ability by faith to keep Gods commandments and to walk as Jesus walked. Romans 6:14
Last week we also pointed out the difference between the words average and normal.
Beloved, part of our problem is this; we think the words normal and average mean the same thing.
We look at other Christians and think that because we act like they do we are normal. No, we are not normal, but we are average. It is the average person who is just like mostly everyone else.
God doesnt want you be average. He wants you to be normal. To be normal is live up to a norm or a standard. The normal Christian lives up to the standards that Christ has set. Like I said, most of us Christians are average but we are not normal!
God wants you to live a normal Christian life, a life that is victorious over sin, a life that is walking as Jesus walked.
DO YOU BELIEVE IT?
We are going to spend several weeks in Romans 6-8, because it is here that we find the secrets to being normal.
THERE IS A PROPOSITION! Vs. 1
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Why does Paul ask this question?
Paul asks this question because in Romans 1-5 he has been teaching the truths about salvation.
Romans 3:10 - As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 5:6-8 - For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 3:28 - Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
· You are a sinner and cant save yourself!
· Christ died for your sins!
· Faith in Christ brings eternal life!
How wonderful is this grace of God, this unmerited favor that God has poured out on those who trust His Son? Romans 5:20-21
Sin is plentiful! Sin abounds!
· Just look at the evening news and you will see sin abounds!
· Just look at the behavior of people you know and see that sin abounds!
· Be honest about your own life and see that all too often sin abounds!
But Paul says that where sin abounded, grace abounded more. Jesus died for sin that even the most hardened of sinners can enjoy Gods grace, His unmerited favor and be forgiven.
Gods abounding grace is available to all who trust Jesus as Savior!
With this in mind, Paul makes the proposition found in Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Well, if God is so gracious and Ive trusted Jesus as my Savior, shouldnt I just continue sinning so God can be even more gracious?
Or, Well if God is going to forgive me anyway because I trusted Jesus as my Savior, I can live any way I please and still go to Heaven.
Or, the thought that we are probably most guilty of, If Im saved, and God will forgive me, then sin is no big deal. I can do what I want, be forgiven, and still go to Heaven!
You may say, I dont believe that!
Or do you?
Do you and I really believe that habitual sin in our lives is really that serious? After all, weve trusted Jesus as our Savior. Were going to Heaven. Whats the difference?
THERES PASSION Vs. 2
Paul shows a passion here that supersedes all other passions.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.
God forbid means May it never be! These words are as strong as Paul can get!
Paul is scandalized.
How can we say such a thing?
How can we think such a thing?
How can we take our sin and Gods grace so lightly?
Do you believe these verses?
Do you believe that Paul was right to be this passionate?
Do you believe that what Paul says here is Gods Word!
DO YOU BELIEVE IT?
If you really do believe these verses, you will be as passionate as Paul!
Should I, as a Christian, continue to habitually sin, and let God continue to pour out His grace upon me, GOD FORBID! MAY IT NEVER BE!
Just think for a minute!
Every sin that I have committed or will commit Jesus has suffered for! So the more sins you and I commit the more Jesus had to suffer!
The mere love that I have for Jesus should make it that I should not want to do anything that causes Him pain or disappointment.
The mere love that I have for my Heavenly Father who has made me His child when I trusted Jesus as my Savior should make it that I should in no way want to cause Him pain or disappointment.
And furthermore, God the Holy Spirit, who lives inside me to keep me, help me, strengthen me, empower me, and encourage me, is grieved every time I sin. Ephesians 4:30-31
Is there forgiveness for us when we sin? Yes! 1 John 1:9
But if you believe these words here in Romans 6:1-2, the very thought of sinning against your Savior, your Heavenly Father, and your Heavenly resident, the Holy Spirit, should be an abomination!
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.
Lets be as passionate as Paul when it comes to this matter!
THERES A PRINCIPLE Vss. 2b-4
There is a principle here that will help you and me if we will simply and truly believe it! It is stated at the end of verse 2 and elaborated upon in verses 3-4.
Romans 6:2b - How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Paul is saying to each and every believer, How shall we who died to sin continue to live in habitual sin?
Christian, when did you die?
You died 2000 years ago before you were born!
How can this be?
Christ died for you! You died when Christ died! 2 Corinthians 5:21
When you die to something, your life is changed forever!
When a man gets married he dies to being single.
His life is changed forever.
He is to act dead to the single life because hes no longer single.
It is a sham when a married man acts like a single man.
He died to one way of life and is alive to a new way of life!
In our text Paul elaborates on what he has just said.
How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Vs. 3 - Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Paul is saying dont you know? or Are you ignorant?
This is a basic principle that the Romans may not have grasped.
That principle is that the believer has died to sin.
This death to sin is illustrated by the believers baptism.
When a person believes on Jesus Christ he or she is to be baptized.
This baptism is a personal testimony that God has ordained for believers.
Baptism by immersion is a persons testimony that his or her faith is in Christ, and that he or she has part in his death.
We are saying by our actions, When Christ died, I died!
To be a believer is to say, Because Christ died for me Im dead, I died!
We are saying by our action that we died to sin with Christ.
Do you believe it? Do you believe that you died with Christ?
Theres more. As we were immersed in the water, we were saying, When Christ was buried I was buried.
Vs. 4 - Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
Burial is the putting away of a dead corpse.
When we were baptized we are saying that our old life, that life of sin was buried when He was buried.
Whats the worst thing you could do to a buried corpse?
The worst thing you could do to a buried corpse is to dig it up!
The worst thing you could do as a Christian is to dig up your past life of sin and live that way!
Vs. 4 - Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Baptism is a testimony of something that has already happened!
When Christ died, I died!
When Christ was buried, I was buried?
When Christ rose to new life, I rose to new life!
My testimony in Baptism is that I am a new creature.
A have new life as Christ has new life when he was raised from the dead. I was resurrected with Him!
The way I walk now is not as I did in my sinful past, but now as a new creature resurrected with Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17
The question is Do you believe it?
Faith is at the root of living the normal Christian life, which is a victorious Christian life.
You must believe with passion, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid.
You must believe in your heart, Romans 6:3-4.
Do you believe that you are dead to sin?
Do you believe the testimony of baptism?
WHEN CHRIST DIED I DIED.
WHEN CHRIST WAS BURIED I WAS BURIED.
WHEN CHRIST ROSE TO NEW LIFE I ROSE TO NEW LIFE.
If you dont believe these facts in your heart, you have no basis for living a normal Christian life.
If you do believe these facts, you should build on them for victory.
If you do believe these facts, you should testify to them by being baptized as a believer if you have not so already.

A PERSONAL COMPLAINT
The best place to take our complaints to the Lord. It they are legitimate they Lord will help us. If they are not legitimate complaints the Lord will show us.
I CRIED Vs. 1
I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication.
I POURED Vs. 2a
I poured out my complaint before him;
I SHOWED Vss. 2b-3a
I shewed before him my trouble. [3] When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path.

WHO WERE THESE GUYS (PEOPLE)?
We know that the Pharisees were the religious fundamentalists of their day. They added much tradition to the law of God, and placed on the same level of importance. Our text shows us in a detailed fashion who they REALLY were.
THEY WERE WONDERERS Vss. 1-2, 5
They wondered why the disciples did not adhere to the tradition of the elders.
THEY WERE WASHERS Vss. 3-4
With great detail they followed man-made traditions about washing.
THEY WERE WANDERERS Vss. 6-8
According to Jesus, they wandered from the commandment of God to keep the traditions of men.
THEY WERE WIGGLERS Vss. 9-13
They wiggled out of their God-given responsibilities through following their own traditions.

1. When we eat and drink in an unworthy manner we are inviting judgment. Vs. 29
