ROMANS 6:5-10

SOLIDARITY

ROMANS 6-8 – NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIVING #3

sol·i·dar·i·ty (s¼l”¹-d²r“¹-t) n. A union of interests, purposes, or sympathies among members of a group; fellowship of responsibilities and interests. The American Heritage Dictionary, Electronic Edition

We know that the best kind of Christianity is that in which brothers and sisters are unified.  Our Lord Jesus prayed for a unity or solidarity among us believers. John 17:20-21

The reason we can have solidarity or unity among believers is because of the unity each believer has in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our solidarity with the Lord Jesus Christ also makes it possible for us to live the normal Christian Life, a life that is victorious over habitual sin.

Remember that we have distinguished between the words “average” and “normal”. To be average means to be just like everyone else. To be normal means to live up to a norm or a standard.  As Christians we are normal when we are living a life of victory over sin.

Last week we began to see the solidarity or the unity that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ as illustrated by Baptism. Romans 6:3-4

Baptism is a testimony of something that has already happened!

When Christ died, I died!

When Christ was buried, I was buried!

When Christ rose to new life, I rose to new life!

My testimony in Baptism is that I am a new creature.

I have new life as Christ has new life when he was raised from the dead. I was resurrected with Him!

The way I walk now is not as I did in my sinful past, but now as a new creature resurrected with Christ.

My unity or solidarity with Christ is what will enable me to live the normal Christian life.

This week we are continuing to explore our solidarity in Christ in Romans 6:5-10. We find ourselves united in Christ.

UNITED IN TRANSFORMATION – Vs. 5

Romans 6:5 - For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

The word planted here means “united”.  As we have shown you before, because Christ died for us, when Christ died we died with Him.

Because we died with Him, we experienced the same transformation as He did.  Christ died and then rose with a new resurrection body.  Christ has new life!

We died with Christ and we are risen with Christ.  Our lives have been transformed because we are united in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 2:20

UNITED IN TRANSFORMATION – Vs. 5

UNITED IN FREEDOM – Vss. 6-7

Romans 6:6 - Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

There was an “old man” who lived inside of every Christian.  That old man was his unregenerate self before he knew Jesus as His Savior.

That old man was not pretty.  Actually that old man was both dead and alive at the same time.  He was alive in the sense of performing habitual sin. He was dead in that he was destined for punishment.

What a miserable creature was our old, unsaved self. Ephesians 2:1-3

This was the old man who was held fast in bondage.

It is him who died with Christ.

It is him that went to the grave.

“Good riddance to bad rubbish!”

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed

So much of the Normal Christian Life has to do with faith.

Do you “know” by faith that your old man was crucified with Christ?

I mean do you really believe it?

And do you “know” by faith that because you were crucified with Christ that the body of sin is “rendered inoperative”?  Do you believe in your heart that you are no longer obligated to serve sin?

When you are tempted to sin you are not obligated to sin because the “body of sin is destroyed” or “rendered inoperative.”

Can you sin? Yes!

Are you obligated to sin? No!

Is it a terrible thing to sin now that you died with Christ? Yes! Romans 6:1-2

Romans 6:6 - Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The intent Christ dying for your sins so that you died with Him, were buried with Him, and rose again with Him is that not only are you forgiven and going to heaven, but that you not serve sin any longer.

The question is, do you believe it?

As a Christian you are set free from sin!

Romans 6:7 - For he that is dead is freed from sin.

The word “freed” is the same word as “justified”.

The word justified means to be “declared righteous”.

You were declared righteous when you trusted Jesus Christ as Savior. That’s how God sees you!

Romans 5:9, 5:1

Because you are dead with, you are set free from sin.

You are “declared righteous” from sin!

Shouldn’t you live like you are declared righteous from sin?

Should you go back into bondage again?

Of course not!

James 4:1-4 - From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Don’t be an adulterer by loving the things of the world more than you love God!  Don’t as a child of God act like His enemy!

Beloved, don’t forget your solidarity in Christ.

You died with Him!

You are buried with Him!

You are justified!

You are declared righteous!

You are free from the obligation to sin!

BELIEVE IT!

UNITED IN LIVING – Vss. 8-10

Romans 6:8 - Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

And you just might be thinking, “Ah yes! Someday I will live with Christ in Heaven. That’s great! I’ll no longer sin at all!”

You are right to be thinking this!

1 John 3:2 - Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

But there is more!

You are dead with Christ now!

You are buried with Christ now!

You are living with Christ now!

Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live;

You were united in death.

You are united in resurrection!

You are united in new life!

You are united in victory!

Romans 6:9 - Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Your Savior was briefly under the dominion of death.  It had dominion over His physical body as He lay in the tomb.

Death can not hurt your Savior now!

Romans 6:10 - For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Jesus died unto sin, your sin once!

But now He lives.

He lives unto God.

He will never go back again to suffer for our sins!

He is free!

And you, Christian friend, are united with Him!

Because Christ is free, you are free.

You are not obligated to live in the bondage of sin any longer.

We are:

UNITED IN TRANSFORMATION – Vs. 5

UNITED IN FREEDOM – Vss. 6-7

UNITED IN LIVING – Vss. 8-10

Lord willing, next week, we will see how to apply this truth of victory to our daily lives.

But first we had to lay the groundwork!

Please believe these verses:

Romans 6:1-2 - What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Romans 6:6-7 - Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Psalm 145

THE REAL MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

There was once on United States television a show called "The Magnificent Seven".  I did not see the program, but I like the title.

I feel that the real magnificent seven appears in this Psalm. Psalm 145 is a Psalm of praise which gives us at least seven magnificent reasons to praise and worship God.

1. GOD'S POSITION - KING, Vss. 1-2

2. GOD'S POWER, Vss. 3-6

3. GOD'S PERSONALITY Vss. 7-9, 17

Mark 9:14-29

A PARENT’S DEFINING MOMENT

A defining moment is a time when one does something that shows exactly who they are or what are really like.  As parents we have several of those as we raise our children.  And this is not limited to just when our children are small.

I want us to look at a parent’s defining moment. His son was demon-possessed and possibly had epilepsy. He brought his son to Jesus and ran into some interesting challenges that led to his defining moment. His defining moment was a moment of faith.

A CONTROVERSIAL SITUATION – Vs. 14

Jesus had been away from most of the disciples, having taken Peter James and John with Him.  He was transfigured and met with Moses and Elijah.

When he came down the mountain, returning to the other disciples, he found them embroiled in controversy. Some religious leaders were disputing with the disciples because they had tried to the Lord’s work, as they had been assigned, and failed.

Now, instead of doing the work of Jesus, they were involved in defending themselves against Jesus’ enemies.

It was a noisy controversy.  In the meantime God’s work went undone.

When we do not do things Jesus’ way, as Jesus’ servants, we too will be embroiled in controversy.  God’s work will go undone as we defend ourselves, worry, and get confronted by the enemies of God.

A CONCERNED FATHER – Vss. 15-18

Vs. 15 – They were shocked to see Jesus show up, just as Jesus’ enemies were probably crediting Jesus with the failures of His disciples.

I believe that the enemies of Jesus, and the crowd in general, were shocked to see Him, because they were not expecting him to show up when they were berating him.  We are always shocked when we are talking about someone and they show up!

I believe that the disciples were also shocked to see Jesus because He had caught them red-handed in their failure to do His work.

Vs. 16 – Notice something here.  When Jesus is brought into a problem, He’ll take over if you let Him!

Right away Jesus is on the defense of His disciples.  This won’t let them off the hook as far as being accountable for their mistakes, but it does mean that Jesus is there to help, fix, and defend.

Jesus asked the scribes what the problem was and evidently there was a deafening silence.

Vs. 17 – A man in the crowd tells Jesus what the problem is.  There’s a boy in trouble. It is His boy, in fact, it’s his only son.

The man was saying, “I brought Him to you Lord. He has a dumb spirit.”  That means he couldn’t talk.  Evidently he couldn’t hear either, because when Jesus healed the boy he removed a “deaf and dumb” spirit.

Vs. 18 – The boy’s problem becomes more detailed and more troubling.  The boy is having seizures. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes as stiff as a board. This was evidently a form of epilepsy complicated by demon possession.

And to make the boy’s problem even greater, the disciples could not help him. The father is having a defining moment, seeking help for his child, and the representatives of Jesus can’t help him.

A CONVICTING MASTER – Vss. 19-23

In this section Jesus brings conviction concerning unbelief.

He brings it both to the disciples and demoniac’s father.

Vs. 19 - Jesus was talking to the disciples, comparing them with the generation in which they lived.

The disciples had tried to cast the demon out of this boy and couldn’t.  But they had been commissioned to do this. Mark 3:14=15

They had some success. Mark 6:12-13

Now, they were powerless.

They, like the rest of the generation, were faithless.

They had tried to cast out the demons in their own power, without relying on the power of the Lord Jesus.

Their faith was evidently not in God, but in their own abilities, and they failed.

Jesus was distraught with them. He was wondering out loud how long He had to put up with their obvious lack of faith.

Now Jesus gives the solution after failure, …bring him unto me.

Vs. 20 – The demon saw Jesus and seemed to tighten his grasp on the boy. A severe convulsion took place.  It seems that when the devil senses that he is in trouble, he often intensifies his attack.

Vss. 21-22 – Jesus asked the Father how long this problem had been occurring.

The Father responded that it had happened since the boy had been a child,

He added that the demon had such a hold on the boy that he even cast him into fire and water trying to destroy the lad.

And notice the father’s impassioned plea, “If you can do anything have compassion on us, and help us.”

The father’s faith was in trouble.

It was wearing thin over the years of no relief.

It had worn thinner because the disciples couldn’t help.

And now his last hope is Jesus.

Vs. 23 – Now Jesus gives a convicting response to the father who at that moment was having a defining moment concerning His faith.

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Jesus is not saying that whatever I want I can have if I just believe.

The man here was standing before the Son of God, and what the man wanted was the healing of his son.  Jesus is showing that the healing of the son is God’s will and indicating that Jesus had the power to do it.  What he needed was the faith of the Father.

Our faith should always be based on the clear teaching of the Word of God. If God promises something, we can believe He will do it if we ask by faith.

If the Spirit of God clearly impresses us that something is God’s will, we should then believe that God will provide it in answer to prayer. 1 John 5:14-15

A CONDITIONAL FAITH – Vs. 24

Mark 9:24 - And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Vs. 24 – Immediately the father of the child cries out, “Lord I do believe”!  It was a like a lunge forward.  “Based on what you just said Lord, I believe that you are going to heal my son.”

But now notice how transparent the man is!

We should all be so honest!

“Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.”

The man’s faith was imperfect and he admitted it.

Now instead of asking for help for his son, he’s asking for help for himself!

Your faith won’t always be perfect. This man’s wasn’t.

And when your faith is not perfect, admit it and ask for help!

When our faith appears to us to be conditional, it is time to cry to the Lord for help.

Our defining moments require faith! John 15:5, Hebrews 11:6

A COMPLETE HEALING – Vss. 25-27

Now we see the power of Jesus at work.

Vs. 25 – Evidently the discussion with the man was of a more private nature.  Now the people were coming together again. Jesus commands the spirit to come out and not to return.  He uses his authority as God.

This is why we are to pray and trust. It is God that has authority not me.  And when God takes action there is no doubt that there will be submission on the part of others. They have no choice.

Vs. 26 – The demon left kicking and screaming. He so worked on the boy that he appeared dead.

Vs. 27 – But Jesus lifted him up and he was healed. The demon was gone.

The boy’s trouble was a demon.

The father’s trouble was that his boy had a demon, and both he and son were helpless to do anything about it.

The father’s defining moment came when he submitted his trouble by request and faith to the Lord Jesus.

He placed the trouble under Jesus’ authority.

What problem, what trouble, what gut-wrenching situation in your life needs to be put under the authority of Jesus?

Is it time for you to cry out, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief”?  Are you having a defining moment that requires unwavering faith?

A CHALLENGING EXPLANATION – Vss. 28-29

Vs. 28 – The disciples asked the logical question, “Why did we fail?”

Jesus had given them authority over demons, and yet they couldn’t handle this one.

Vs. 29 – The problem was so great that the only solution was prayer!

Jesus stressed the need for persevering prayer. Matthew 7:7-8

Jesus stressed the importance of believing prayer. Mark 11:24

And what about fasting?  There is some question as to whether the word belongs in the text or not.  But the Bible Knowledge Commentary explains it well when it says, “But the words, if original, refer to a practical means of focusing one’s attention more fully on God for a specific

purpose, for a limited period of time.” John F. Walvoord, Roy F. Zuck, Editors, The Bible Knowledge Commentary, New Testament Edition, (Wheaton, Illinois, Victor Books, 1983), p145

If God moves you to fast to concentrate on seeking God’s face in prayer, do it!

When your defining moments come, remember it is your faith that will be tested, and also your prayer life, as you trust God for solutions in prayer.

John 5:44

HONOR FROM GOD

John 5:44 - How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Our problem is that we tend to seek honor (glory) for ourselves from each other.  This contributes to our lack of faith!  We should seek the honor or glory that God gives through His Son.

SEEK THE HONOR OF HIS PEACE

Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Isaiah 26:3-4 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

John 16:33 - These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

SEEK THE HONOR OF HIS PRESENCE

Psalms 65:4 - Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

John 15:4-5 - Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

John 15:7 - If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

SEEK THE HONOR OF HIS POWER

John 14:12-14 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

SEEK THE HONOR OF HIS PRECEPTS

Psalms 119:11 - Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psalms 19:7-11 - The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

SEEK THE HONOR OF HIS PLACE

John 14:2-3 - In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

2 Corinthians 5:8-10 - We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

2 Timothy 4:8 - Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

James 1:12 - Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

1 Peter 5:4 - And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 - For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?
