ROMANS 6:11-14

IMPACT WORD

ROMANS 6-8 – NORMAL CHRISTIAN LIVING #4

There are certain words that I call impact words.  Their very presence in a sentence, paragraph, or conversation alters or enhances them.  What are some of those “impact words”? “If”, “but”, “and”, “because”, “no”, “yes”, and “so” are all impact words.

I see an impact word in our Scripture text for this morning, Romans 6:11-14. The word has to do with living the “Normal Christian Life”, living life by the standards that God has set for the Christian.

The word is LIKEWISE.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the word likewise this way: 1. In the same way; similarly. 2. As well; also.

In Romans 6:1-10 Paul has been laying the groundwork for living the normal Christian Life.

In verses 1-2 he asked if we should continue to sin so grace could abound, and the answer was “God forbid!” or “May it never be!”

In verses 3-4 Paul reminds us that believer’s baptism is a testimony of our faith in Christ that we are identified with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection, and that we should walk in “newness of life”.

In verses 5-10 we are told that we have solidarity or are united in Christ.

Paul explains the truth in verses 1-10, but doesn’t tell us directly what to do with that truth.  He waits until verse 11 and uses that impact word LIKEWISE!

Paul is saying, because verses 1-10 are true, you are to behave LIKEWISE, in the same manner, similarly!

Now Paul is putting shoe leather on the concept of living the Normal Christian life.  There are no direct commands in verses 1-10, but there are commands in verses 11-14.

In these verses Paul is saying to us that compared to Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection,

YOU ARE LIKEWISE DEAD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

Vs. 11 – The first thing we need to do is to “reckon” ourselves “dead indeed unto sin”.

The word “reckon” here does not mean to suppose. It doesn’t mean, “I reckon (suppose) I’ll get up and get me a glass of tea.”

The word means to “count on it”.

When I count on something I believe it to be true.

Romans 6:6-7 say, Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Paul is saying, “That old miserable sinner that lived inside of you is dead. He is rendered ineffective. You are no longer obligated to serve sin. In fact, you are free from the power of sin having to control you.”

So Paul is saying verse 11 – LIKEWISE, because the old man is dead and you are no longer obligated to serve sin, count on the fact by faith that you are dead indeed unto sin.

It is accomplished fact. You are to believe it.

God is saying to you, I want you to believe that you are dead indeed unto sin.  You no longer have to live in sin because His Son died to set you free, and you died with Him.

Now, if you’re no longer obligated to serve sin, and you are not, you need to heed the challenge of verse 12.

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Before you were saved, sin reigned in your body. You were a sinner who practiced sin!

Now that you are a believer, and you have died with Christ, you are to no longer let sin reign in your mortal body.

Neither are we to obey the sinful desires that we have in our lives, our lusts.

But now that you have trusted Christ as Savior, have died with Christ and are buried with Christ, sin is to be the exception in your life, not the rule!

Roy Laurin – “We are to determine now what place our bodies are to play in the great drama of life. What will we make of our bodies? Will they be temples or toys?” Roy Laurin, Life Begins (Chicago, Illinois, Van Kampen Press, 1948) p. 204

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

God the Holy Spirit lives inside of you.

You are the temple of God.

A temple is a place of worship and service to God!

Listen to these verses again from Romans 6:6-7 - Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

LIKEWISE!

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: (Romans 6:12-13a)

Your body is a temple, don’t let sin reign and, verse 13 adds, don’t …yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin:

When you yield you, “give it up”.

When you yield you give in.

When you yield you make yourself available, you present.

As a Christian you are not to yield, let the members of your body give in and become instruments of unrighteousness unto sin:

YOU ARE LIKEWISE ALIVE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

Romans 6:9-10 - Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

LIKEWISE

Romans 6:11 - Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You are to count on the fact that you are alive unto God through the Lord Jesus Christ!

The things that you now do are to please God just as the things that Jesus does please God.

You are alive to do what’s right in God’s eyes.

You are alive to do what is pure in God’s eyes.

You are alive to do what is holy in God’s eyes.

COUNT ON IT!

Vs. 13 - but yield yourselves unto, God as those that alive from the dead

Because you are alive with Christ you are to yield yourself to God as those that are alive from the dead!

No longer am I to yield to sin.

When Christ died I died.

When Christ was buried I was buried.

When Christ rose to new life, I rose to new life.

That new life is a life that gives in to God that yields to God.

It starts with a once and for all decision as laid out in

Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

You are to make a once and for all presentation of you body as a living sacrifice.

That means you will give into God’s will on every point.

Wherever He wants you to go, you will go.

Whatever He wants you to be, you will be.

Whatever He wants you to do, you will do.

You are presenting your body as “holy”, totally set aside for Him.

You are presenting your body as acceptable unto God, doing whatever pleases Him.

This is a once and for all decision, but you will have to remind yourself often that you have made that decision!

So you yield yourself to God as one who is alive with the Lord Jesus from the dead.

And your body members are yielded, given in, presented as well, as tools, instruments of righteousness unto God.

YOU ARE LIKEWISE VICTORIOUS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

Romans 6:9 - Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Christ is victorious over sin and the grave!

Because you are “in Christ”, that is, because you have died with Him, been buried with Him, and risen with Him as a believer.  LIKEWISE you are also victorious over sin and the grave!

Romans 6:14 - For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

You have victory my friend, if you will but accept it!

You are not in bondage anymore!

Yes you will occasionally sin, but you need not let any sin, any habit, any attitude, any bondage have dominion over you any more!

You are no longer under the law and the penalties that violating the law bring.

You are under God’s grace.

God’s unmerited favor working in your life through His Son and through His Spirit will give you the victory.

The impact word is “LIKEWISE”

·       Because Christ died and you died with Him

·       Because Christ was buried and you were buried with Him

·       Because Christ rose to new victorious life, and you rose with Him

Reckon – Count on it!

Yield – Don’t give in to your lusts but into God

Trust – Believe that you have the victory

Make sure that your body is a temple, not a toy!

YOU ARE LIKEWISE DEAD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

YOU ARE LIKEWISE ALIVE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

YOU ARE LIKEWISE VICTORIOUS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST

1 Kings 9:1-9

SECOND APPEARANCE

This is the second time that God appeared to Solomon.  There are lessons for us to learn from what God told Solomon.

GOD RESPONDS – Vss. 1-3, 5 – God hears and answers prayer.

GOD REQUIRES – Vs. 4 – He expects those who pray to live upright lives. Psalm 66:18

GOD RECIPROCATES – Vss. 6-9 – He judges those who disobey.

Psalm 42

INGREDIENTS IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

1. THIRST FOR GOD Vss. 1-2 – A THIRSTY SOUL

2. TEARS OF SORROW Vss. 3-4 – A TEARFUL SOUL

3. TRIALS THROUGH DAILY LIVING Vss. 6-7, 9-10 – A TRANSPARENT SOUL (Pouring out

Matthew 9:14-17

TOO MUCH

It is possible to catch a fish and not have a strong enough line to pull it in.  The line can break. The fish is too much for the line.

It is possible to pull something with a rope and have the rope break because the load is too much for the rope to handle. It will break.

It is possible to try and add Christianity to another religion but Christianity is too strong and too new for another religion to handle. It won’t work.

Christianity is a new religion.  The Pharisees especially were trying to make Christ’s followers conform to the traditions of Judaism.  Christianity is too much for Judaism.  It stands alone as new!

THE NEWNESS OF RELATIONSHIP – WE HAVE THE BRIDEGROOM – Vs. 15

THE NEWNESS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS – WE ARE CLOTHED WITH IT – Vs. 16

THE NEWNESS OF REJOICING – ONLY NEW WINESKINS CAN HOLD IT – Vs. 17

Mark 7:31-37

PHYSICIAN ON DUTY

A PROMINENT PROBLEM – Vss. 31-32

A PRIVATE HEALING – Vss. 33-35

A PUBLIC PROCLAMATION – Vss. 36-37

The more Jesus told people to be quiet about His works, the more they talked about them.

BROTHERS ARMED

FOR BATTLE

Ephesians 6:10-18

#1 – ARMED AND DANGEROUS

(A Complete Lesson Used in men’s Bible study but applicable to all.)

Ephesians 6:10-13 - Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

·       Please react to poem “Backward Christian Soldiers".

·       What do you think is the attitude of the average Christian towards Christian warfare?  Why?

·       Why is Satan happy when the Christian is unaware, afraid, or unresponsive concerning the battle?

·       Why is it important that Christians fight the battle together?

Hebrews 3:12-13 - Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

We as brothers in Christ are involved together in a spiritual battle against the world, the flesh and the devil.  Praise God for the armor that He has provided for us. It assures us of victory as we are “armed and dangerous”.

ASSIGNED BRETHREN – Vs. 10

·       How is this verse contrary to the view of the average Christian? 2 Corinthians 12:9

·       Why do we have great potential for victory?

·       On what is our true strength and power based?

Ephesians 1:19-21 - And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

·       How important is it for us to believe God if we accept the assignment of being a soldier and expect to successfully stand in battle? Luke 1:37, Isaiah 41:10

AWARE WARRIORS – Vss. 11-12

·       Vs. 11 - Who is Satan?  Why is he happy when you ignore or minimize his existence? See Isaiah 14:12-15, Ezekiel 28:12-18, 1 Peter 5:8

·       Wiles means "cunning, crafty arts, strategems." — Bible Exposition Commentary - New Testament (Wiersbe)

·       What are some of the “tricks of the devil” that we need to be aware of?

·       Vs. 12 – What does the word “wrestle” tell you about the battle in which we are involved?

·       What do we learn about Satan from this verse?  How does this reinforce our need for the power of God and the encouragement of brothers?

The struggle is not physical (against flesh and blood); it is a spiritual conflict against the spiritual “Mafia.” Though the ranks of satanic forces cannot be fully categorized, the first two (rulers and authorities) have already been mentioned in 1:21 and 3:10. Paul added the powers of this dark world and the spiritual forces of evil. Their sphere of activity is in the heavenly realms, the fifth occurrence of this phrase, which is mentioned in the New Testament only in 1:3, 20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12. Satan, who is in the heavens  until he will be cast out in the middle of the Tribulation, is trying to rob believers of the spiritual blessings God has given them (Eph. 1:3) John F. Walvoord and Roy B. Zuck, Eds., Bible Knowledge Commentary New Testament Edition (Wheaton Illinois, Victor Books, 1983) p.643

ARMED SOLDIERS – Vs. 13

·       According to this verse, what is our primary duty as soldiers?  How is this contrary to some of our concepts of warfare?  How is it consistent with the character of God?

·       When most armies go to war it is the duty of the rulers to provide the weapons.  What is the duty of the soldier?

·       Why is God’s armor superior to anything Satan can throw at you?

·       Remember Satan is a creature, not the creator!

·       If God’s armor is so superior, why do so many Christian soldiers lose so many battles?

·       How do I know that I’ve done all I can to stand?

·       How is every day an “evil day”?

FOR THIS WEEK:

1.     Pray for your brothers that they will stand firm and fully armed.

2.     As you meditate on Ephesians 6:10-18, ask God to teach you concerning the use of His armor.

3.     Prayerfully make sure your armor is in place each morning.

Next week we will begin to itemize the various pieces of armor at our disposal.

*********************************************************************1 Timothy 6:3-5

ABOUT FALSE TEACHERS

THEIR DOCTRINE IS WRONG

1 Timothy 6:3 - If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

THEIR DOCTRINE IS IGNORANT

1 Timothy 6:4 - He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

THEIR DOCTRINE IS PERVERSE

1 Timothy 6:5 - Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
