SERMON SEEDS FOR NOVEMBER 5, 2007

***************************************************************************

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JACK – I have changed my preaching plans so that at this time I do not plan to complete the series on Normal Christian Living.  I did complete Romans 6 which can be used as a series of messages using the same theme.  It is possible that I will do a series on Romans 8 in the near future.

1 Kings 18:41-46

ON OUR KNEES IN FAITH

The draught had lasted 3 1/2 years.

Elijah, the prophet who had predicted the draught had been in hiding.

A great contest was held between the Prophet of God and the false prophets. Elijah had won. (See rest of chapter for details.) The onlookers had proclaimed, "The Lord He is the God; The Lord he is the God." (Vs. 39)

Now it was time for Elijah to pray for rain.  It was a prayer of faith.

This is exactly the type of prayers which we should pray by faith.

THE PROCLAMATION OF FAITH Vs. 41

Based on what God had told Elijah, Elijah believed that there would be rain.  All he needed was to believe it and pray for it.  God's word contains many promises which will be ours as we believe them and claim them by faith. (1John 5:14-15)

THE PRAYER OF FAITH Vs. 42

THE PERSPECTIVE OF FAITH Vss. 43-44

Elijah prayed by faith and looked for the answer.  We should also be on the outlook for God's answers to our confident prayers of faith.

THE POWER OF FAITH Vss. 45-46

The prayer of faith was answered miraculously. (James 5:16-17)

PROVERBS 3:5-7

SIMPLE NAVIGATION

You and I are on a journey. It’s called life.  Life is full of joys and sorrow. Life is full of ups and downs.  Life is full of challenges.

Because life can get really complicated, we need help navigating through our years here on earth.

God has promised to give guidance to believers so we will be able to navigate through life. Psalms 32:8, Psalms 73:23-24, Psalms 119:105, John 16:13

In spite of these promises we often find ourselves, not sure what we are to do next.  It would be nice if there was SIMPLE NAVIGATION that would help us each and every day to know that we are on the right track.

There’s Good News.  God has given us that simple Navigational System.

Proverbs 3:5-7 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

The first thing that we need to do is lean.

LEAN

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

When you trust you are relying on something or someone. It is faith.  You are leaning on that individual or item.

When you trust in the Lord you are putting your faith in Him. You are leaning on Him.

Because we are sinners, and don’t deserve Heaven, we need help getting there.  That’s why Jesus died for our sins. He paid for our sins, because we were not able to pay for them. Romans 5:8

So what must you do to make Christ’s payment for sin applicable for you?  You simply need to trust Him alone for forgiveness and eternal life.  It is a matter of faith. It is a matter of trust. It is a matter of leaning upon Him. John 3:16

Trusting Jesus Christ as your Savior was only the first step of what should be a long series of events in which you trust in the Lord.

When you trust in the Lord you are leaning on Him for guidance.

When you trust in the Lord you are leaning on Him for help.

When you trust in the Lord you are leaning of Him for strength.

And by the way you can’t trust the Lord without trusting in His Word. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Notice that we are to trust in the Lord with all our heart.

There are times when we say that we are leaning on the Lord, that we are trusting in Him.  Actually we are trusting in ourselves. We are leaning on our own understanding. We are trying to figure things out with our own wisdom and knowledge. The problem is that often we are trying to help God solve our problems when God doesn’t need our help! The trouble is, when we try to help God solve our problems, we are insulting the God of the universe. Isaiah 42:8

God does not want or your need your help in solving your problems.

God wants and needs two things from you.

He wants your implicit whole-hearted trust.

He wants your obedience. He wants you to obey what He tells you to do. Luke 9:23

And another thing, if we are living in fear we are leaning on our own understanding. We are not trusting God. 1 John 4:18

LEARN

Proverbs 3:6 - In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Would you like the Lord to guide you in everything you say and do?

Be careful before you can yes.  It might be like sticking your head in a blast furnace!

Don’t say that you want the Lord’s guidance unless you are ready for change. Isaiah 55:8-9

If you really want to keep living the way you are living now.  If you are contented with life the way it is now, don’t seek God’s will!

But

·       If you have a yearning to please God

·       If you want God’s best

·       If you want true happiness

·       If you want to impact your world for Christ

·       If you want to see others come to Christ

YOU NEED GOD’S GUIDANCE IN YOUR LIFE

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

See that God’s will is GOOD, ACCEPTABLE, PERFECT!

WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR?

So how do we go about learn His will?

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

That means in everything I am going to recognize His Lordship!  It begins with Romans 12:1.

That’s the over all commitment. Lord here are my hands, my feet, my heart, my mind, my legs, my arms, my stomach, my mouth, it’s all yours!

When everything is his, then you can start seriously consider acknowledging Him in everything you do.

Basically, you should consult with the Lord before you do anything.  Seek His guidance before you do anything.

·       Check with God about the use of your time.

·       Check with God about the food you eat.

·       Check with God about what you say and how you say it – the use of your tongue.

·       Check with God about the use of the television.

·       Check with God about the places you go.

·       Check with God about your romantic attachments and romantic thoughts!

·       Check with God about who your friends are.

·       Check with God about church attendance. Judging by prayer meeting attendance and evening church attendance, I doubt that many of you do much checking. And remember, the reason there are no children, young people and young adults here on Sunday night, is because you’re not here!

If you seriously want God’s will for your life, then you need to seriously acknowledge Him every step of the way!

LEAVE

Proverbs 3:7 - Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

There are two things we need to leave behind if we are going to have God’s simple navigation at work in our eyes.

First, we need to leave behind our own wisdom.

I have the world’s wisdom, that which proceeds from a wicked heart.

Let us leave behind the world’s wisdom in favor of God’s wisdom.

James 3:17-18 - But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Second, I am to depart from evil.

If it’s wrong, I’m to leave it behind.

If it’s questionable, I’m to leave it behind.

If it’s sensual, I’m to leave it behind.

If God hates it, I’m to leave it behind. Proverbs 6:16-19

If it’s evil in God’s eyes, I am to leave it behind.

But how will I be able to leave it behind.

That’s where the middle phrase in this verse comes into play. I am to fear God!

What is the fear of God?

It is being afraid enough to turn to Christ as Savior. Luke 12:5.

It is being afraid enough to be concerned about answering to God for the things we have done. Hebrews 4:13, 2 Corinthians 5:10

It is being afraid enough to reverence God as my Heavenly Father, who loves me more than any earthly father ever could.  If He is all powerful, holy, and loving, He is deserving of my respect.                      1 John 3:1

Proverbs 3:5-7 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

SIMPLE NAVIGATION:

LEAN - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

LEARN - In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

LEAVE - Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart

Matthew 6:24-25

PRIORITIES

If a husband left on a hunting trip just as wife started labor pains, we'd say the man had his priorities mixed up.  If an employee lies to get ahead in the company, and does not tell the truth, we'd say that person has his priorities mixed up.  When Christians put their own well being ahead of serving God, Jesus says they have their priorities mixed up.

Luke 6:17-26

IT'S ALL IN THE TIMING,

Timing is important. When we do things for the Lord, we must be sure that we do them at the right time. Sometimes people have done things too early and all too often they have done things too late. In our text this evening Jesus shows the importance of proper timing in the decisions that we make.

It's all in the timing,

CURRENT OR FUTURE POVERTY

CURRENT OR FUTURE HUNGER

CURRENT OR FUTURE TEARS

CURRENT OR FUTURE PERSECUTION

CURRENT OR FUTURE POVERTY - Vs. 20, 24

Vs. 20 - The word "blessed" means happy.

It is possible for the poor to be happy.

Jesus is not saying that we should seek to be poor.

Jesus is not saying that there is virtue in poverty.

But, the Bible does teach that there is an advantage that the poor have over the rich. James 2:3

James 2:5 - Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him.

It is more likely for a poor man to be rich in faith than a rich man to be rich in faith.  I think that this is simply because the rich man will trust in his wealth, and the poor man has nothing to trust.

Tell story of rich young ruler. Mark 10:17-27

There is another thought in our text, which we get from Matthew.  There is a kind of poverty, which all Christians must have in order to enter into the kingdom of God.

We must be poor in spirit.

Matthew 5:3 - Blessed are the poor in Spirit for there's is the Kingdom of Heaven.

This does not mean poor spirited.

This does not mean false humility, or putting one's self down.

To be poor in spirit is an inward condition.

It is a man's attitude toward himself.

He must see himself as a sinner. Isaiah 64:6

He must humble himself and trust the Savior. Matthew 18:4

The one who is poor in Spirit realizes that he has no merit or ability to save himself.

The poor in Spirit after being saved realizes that he has no merit or ability to live the Christian Life.

The poor in Spirit who is saved will depend on God for Spirit filling, for power, for everything!

The poor in Spirit can really develop an effective prayer life, depending on God.

We said that one could chose between current or future poverty.

If only the poor in spirit enter the Kingdom of Heaven, what happens to those who do not humble themselves before God?

Vs. 24 - I believe that this woe is pronounced on the proud, self-sufficient rich who never humble themselves before God. They either pay by being poor now, or poor later.

The rich without Christ have received all the reward they are going to receive. Luke 12:15-21, 16:19-25

CURRENT OR FUTURE HUNGER Vss. 21a, 25a

Luke 6:21 - Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled.

Vs. 21a is explained by Matthew 5:6. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

God is the friend of the honest seeker of truth.

It is the hungry of soul who will hunger after righteousness.

When a person hungers after righteousness, he will also be hungry after God. Psalm 27:8, 63:1-2

When a person sincerely hungers after God, and God's righteousness, He will be filled.

First, he will be filled with salvation, and then on a daily basis.

Acts 17:10-12 We need to be like the Bereans, who searched the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul taught was true.

I believe that hungering and thirsting after righteousness is a continual process.

We are to hunger and be filled.

Then we will be hungry again, and filled again.

The process will repeat itself, just like with real life!

Luke 6:25a - Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger.

The one who chooses to be full now, or satisfied now with his own life and his own plans and his own pleasures, without seeking after righteousness will one day be hungry.

For the self-sufficient non-Christian who never sought God, the end will obviously mean separation from God in hell. I'd call that hunger.

I believe for the Christian who did not seek after God, there very well could be times of crisis when he has nothing to fall back on, because he hasn't the Lord at times when he could have.

We do not finish well as Christians facing life, if we do not learn to seek God's righteousness while we can.

And what about rewards?

The Christian who has not been faithful to God, but has chosen to be satisfied with a nominal spiritual life, will not fare well when God gives out the rewards.

CURRENT OR FUTURE TEARS - Vss. 21b, 25b

Luke 6:21b - …Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

Vs.21b, I feel, has its parallel in Matthew 5:4.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

The person who mourns over their sin is likely to be saved.

The Christian who mourns over their sin, is likely to repent! 2 Corinthians 7:10

Another thought: a Christian who weeps or mourns for the unsaved and goes to them with tears shall return with rejoicing. Psalm 126:5-6

Also, the Christian who sorrows after the sins of other Christians will find joy. Galatians 6:1

Those that weep shall laugh.

They shall laugh in the joy of salvation.

They shall laugh in the joy of forgiveness.

They shall laugh in the joy of a brother restored.

They shall laugh in the joy of a sinner saved.

And I believe that Heaven will be a place of laughter!  And why not, we'll be in the presence of our Savior.

So, it's best to mourn now, to weep now, so we can laugh later.

Luke 6:25b - …Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

The one who laughs now doesn't take spiritual things seriously.

The one who laughs, mocking salvation now will be weeping in hell later. And the Christian who has taken the Christian life too lightly now, will weep at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

CURRENT OR FUTURE POVERTY

CURRENT OR FUTURE HUNGER

CURRENT OR FUTURE TEARS

CURRENT OR FUTURE PERSECUTION - Vss. 22, 26

Vss. 22-23 – Those who follow the Lord Jesus Christ will be persecuted in some way. John 15:18-21

Vs. 26 - If you are spoken well of all the time, you must be doing something wrong.

False prophets were as phony as three dollar bills, and yet they were praised by men.

The false prophet had his reward with the praise.

He's not getting any later!

It’s all in the timing:

CURRENT OR FUTURE POVERTY

CURRENT OR FUTURE HUNGER

CURRENT OR FUTURE TEARS

CURRENT OR FUTURE PERSECUTION

Stand therefore… - Ephesians 6:14

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; - Ephesians 6:15

UNMOVABLE!

Brothers Armed For Battle #4 on the Christian’s Armor

A Complete Lesson

·       What do you do to prepare yourself to go hunting or to prepare your home for winter?

·       Why is preparation important for a soldier?

·       What are some of the different types of footwear that you have and when do you wear them?

·       Why is the proper footwear important to a soldier?

The Christian Soldier needs to be armed with the proper footwear so that he will stand in the day of battle and not run.  The unmovable soldier is one who has who has his “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.”

ABOUT THE BOOTS

“The image Paul has in mind comes from the Roman soldier's war boot, the caliga or half-boot which the legionnaire regularly wore while on duty. It was an open-toed leather boot with a heavily nail-studded sole which was tied to the ankles and shins with straps. These were not shoes for running - for example, fleeing or pursuing an enemy… These boots served for marching, especially in battle. Their function was like today's cleated football shoe. They gave the foot traction and prevented sliding. Much ancient battle was hand-to-hand and foot-to-foot, like on the line of scrimmage, so these boots gave the Roman soldier an advantage over ill-equipped foes. The "readiness" of our text pictures us being ready with our caliga firmly planted on solid ground. Thus established, the enemy is not going to be able to push us back. Rather, we are set to advance.” R. Kent Hughes, Preaching the Word, Ephesians, The Mystery of the Body of Christ, (Wheaton, Illinois, Crossway Books,1990), p 232

·       The boots that we are to wear are the preparation, or “readiness” of the Gospel of peace.

·       During spiritual warfare, what is the advantage of standing in the readiness of peace?

·       How and why should we be at peace in the middle of spiritual conflict?

·       The Gospel or good news of Christianity is loaded with promises of peace.

·       Let us consider the aspects of peace that we should readily be armed with as Christian soldiers.

THE PEACE OF HIS PARDON

Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Corinthians 5:18  - And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

·       How has Jesus’ pardon of your sins given you peace?

·       Why has God chosen to give us the ministry of reconciliation?

·       How does 1 John 1:9 contribute to your peace?

THE PEACE OF HIS PARENTAGE

Romans 8:15-17 - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Galatians 4:5-7 - To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

·       What does permission to call God “Daddy” have to do with giving us peace?

THE PEACE OF HIS PRIESTHOOD

Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 7:24-25 - But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

·        What does the high priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ have to do with peace?

THE PEACE OF HIS PRESENCE

Matthew 28:20 - Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Hebrews 13:5-6 - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

·       What do the words “always” and “never” have to do with the peace of His presence?

·       Peace is often a result of a lack of faith.  Doubting God’s presence or not resting in His presence will certainly cause a lack of faith!

THE PEACE OF HIS PROTECTION

Psalms 121:5-8 - The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Isaiah 26:3 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

·       What must we do to experience the peace of His presence?

·       What is it about His presence that encourages you?

THE PEACE OF HIS PARTICIPATION

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 16:33 - These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

·       According to John 14:27, what is neat about the peace that Jesus gives?

·       What does Jesus overcoming the world have to do with your peace? John 16:33

·       How will a total prayer life that uses all aspects of prayer help Jesus give you peace? Philippians 4:6-7

************************************************************************************

Hebrews 2:1-4

A SERIOUS CHALLENGE

CHARGE - Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

CAUTION - [2] For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; [3] How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;

COMMUNICATION - …which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord…

CONFIRMATION - …and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; [4] God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
