John 20:15

DON’T WEEP!

I used this as an Easter Sunrise message. However, this may be used at any time of the year.

Christians are to be a joyful people (Nehemiah 8:10, Philippians 4:4).  The problem with having joy is that we live in a real world.  There are times when we feel much like Mary Magdalene in John 20.  Her Lord and Master had been terribly mistreated and murdered.  Now, she has come to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus, and the body is missing.  She did not realize that Jesus had risen, so out of sorrow and frustration, she stood outside the tomb weeping according to verse 11.

I am not deceived. Not everyone who comes church is ecstatic with joy.  In fact, some of you probably feel like weeping.  And even though some of you may not feel like weeping, your joy is hampered by events that have happened to you and your friends. Life is filled with sorrow.

There is the sorrow caused by hurt feelings.

There is the sorrow caused from being mistreated.

There is the sorrow caused by seeing others hurt and mistreated.

There is the sorrow caused by family difficulties.

There is the sorrow caused by strained relationships and lack of money and/or jobs.

There is the sorrow caused by sickness and death.

These sorrows create a barrier that makes it difficult for us to be joyful at Easter.

As Mary stood there weeping, she was asked by angels why she was weeping. John 20:11-13

Mary’s answer to their inquiry was the reason at the moment that she was weeping.  However, it was probably the culmination of sorrows over the previous days that also added to the weeping.

May I ask you a question, one to be answered silently?

Why are you weeping this morning?  You may not be literally weeping, but what is making you sad on this joyous holiday?

John 20:15 - Jesus appears to Mary, although Mary at first does not realize it.  And Jesus asked her “Woman, why are you weeping?”  Notice that Jesus cares when he asks that question.  However, I believe that he is also telling Mary that there is no longer a need to weep.

My friend, Jesus cares about what is causing you sorrow and He wants you to tell him when you have sorrows.  He cares enough to listen. Hebrews 4:15-16

It is interesting that Jesus turned her weeping into joy with just one word. He spoke her name.

John 20:16 - Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

Jesus basically communicated to Mary that she should not weep because Jesus, her master, was very much alive.

The Lord Jesus turned her sorrow into joy.

And this morning, the Lord Jesus wants your sorrow to be turned to joy.  It does not mean that your problems will go away.  But it does mean that we can rejoice in spite of our circumstances.

So this morning, I say to you, if you are a born-again Christian, if you have trusted Christ as your Savior don’t weep!

DON’T WEEP! HE IS RISEN!

The announcements that the angles gave the women who came to the tomb, was that Jesus has risen.

The message Jesus gave the two disciples on the way to Emmaus was that He has risen!

The message to the apostles and to Thomas was that He has risen!

And Jesus appearing to Mary was declaring that He had risen!

And the message that God gives to us is that Jesus has risen! 1 Corinthians 15:20

Why is the resurrection a source of joy?

·        The resurrection proves that God has accepted Christ’s sacrifice for sin.

·        The resurrection promises life after death. John 11:25-26

·        The resurrection shows us that Jesus is alive so he can indeed intercede in our behalf. Romans 8:34

DON’T WEEP! WE ARE REDEEMED!

When you were born, you were born into captivity.

You were born into the bondage of sin.

You are a sinner by nature.

You have willfully disobeyed God. Ephesians 2:1-3

In order for you to be set free from your bondage, someone had to pay for your sins and set you free.  This is what redemption is, the paying of a ransom to someone free.

This is what Christ has done for all of those that name Him as Savior. 1 Peter 1:18-19

It was not a ransom of silver and gold that was paid for your sin. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless son of God that was shed.  As John the Baptist said so long ago,    …Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1:29) Romans 5:9

DON’T WEEP! WE ARE REGENERATED!

To be regenerated is to be born again. John 3:3.

If you have truly trusted the Lord Jesus as Savior, you have been literally born into the family of God by the power of the Holy Spirit.  This is regeneration. John 3:5-8

Why should you not weep because you have been regenerated?  You should not weep because you have new life in Christ now! 2 Corinthians 5:17

Although you have problems, you have new life to see you through!

Although you still the devil is now your enemy you have new life to see you through.

Although there are times of depression and tears, you have the new life, the regenerated life to see you through!

You now have the ability to handle your difficulties through Christ! Romans 5:17

DON’T WEEP! HE IS RESIDING!

If you have been regenerated the Spirit of God and of Christ dwells in you.  He is living inside.  It is the Spirit of Christ who is present to comfort and help you. John 14:16-18

How should the residence of Christ through the Holy Spirit encourage you?

·        It is the Holy Spirit that brings comfort to you when you hurt.

·        It is the Holy Spirit that tells you that you are a child of God. Romans 8:16

·        It is the Holy Spirit that empowers us to witness. Acts 1:8

·        It is the Holy Spirit that produces fruit. Galatians 5:22-23

·        It is the Holy Spirit that helps us to pray. Romans 8:26-27

So, if Jesus is residing inside of us, what should our response be to Him?

Our response should be to abide in Him, to remain close to have fellowship with Him.

John 15:4-5,7

DON’T WEEP! HE WILL RETURN!

John 14:1-3 - Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. [2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Jesus is coming back for us.

He might come and receive you personally by way of death.

Or you may be here when he comes for those who believe in Him. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52

Christian, your life is temporary in this world.

Christian, at any moment you could be taken by death.

Christian, at any moment you could be taken home with all other Christians.

Christian, we have a blessed hope, and should act that way. Titus 2:11-13

DON’T WEEP! HE REIGNS!

Revelation 1:18 - I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

My friend, Jesus is God.

My friend, OUR GOD REIGNS!

Rev. 22:13 - I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Isaiah 52:7 - How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace, who brings good news of happiness, who announces salvation, And says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

My friend, Jesus is very much alive and He reigns.

No matter what goes wrong, He reigns.

Not matter what difficulty you face, He reigns.

There is nothing that you face today that is out of the control of God.

YOUR GOD REIGNS – believe it!

YOUR GOD REIGNS – rest in Him!

YOUR GOD REIGNS – rejoice!

YOUR GOD REIGNS – relax!

1 Corinthians 15:20

CHRIST IS RISEN!

This morning's Easter Services have been a celebration of the fact that Christ is risen from the dead.  If there is one truth as necessary as the substitutionary death of Christ on the cross, it is the resurrection of Christ from the grave. The great news, however is that Christ indeed is raised from the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

1 Corinthians 15:20 - But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

This little verse tells us three important things about the resurrection.  It tells of:

THE IMMEDIACY OF THE RESURRECTION

We live in a "now" society.

We want immediate gratification.

That's one of the reasons credit card debt is so high for so many.  We don't want to wait to save to buy something. We want it now.

Most of us don't like to wait for anything.

There is one thing we don't have to wait for.  We are not waiting for the resurrection of Christ to take place.  We are not hoping that one day Jesus will come out of the grave. He has already come out of the grave. But now is Christ risen from the dead

The fact that Christ is already risen from the dead is important because it shows us that God accepted the sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins.

The immediacy of Jesus' resurrection is also important because of where Jesus is. He is in Heaven! Acts 1:9-11, Hebrews 1:1-3

The one who died for you, sits at the right hand of the throne of God to represent you! He is your advocate! 1 John 2:1-2

If you are a born again Christian, Jesus died for your sins.

Because you are a Christian God does not want you to sin.

However, there are times when we do sin.

When we fail God we have an advocate, a lawyer, "one called along side to help", sitting at the right hand of the throne of God.  He is there to represent us.  I imagine that when we sin, He might say to God the Father, "Father, He's mine, I died for that sin."

As Christians, we should strive to live holy lives. 1 Peter 1:15-16

And when we sin, we are to confess that sin, and forsake it. 1 John 1:9

But isn't it nice to know that we have a risen Savior, who's there representing us when we sin.  Sin should never be taken lightly, but it's nice to have help.

Not only is Jesus in Heaven now as our advocate, He's there as our high priest. Hebrews 4:14-16

I have had the pleasure of having friends who can sometimes say, "I know exactly how you feel, because I've been through the same thing."

In Heaven, you have a high priest that not only speaks in your behalf to the Heavenly Father, but He knows just how you feel and what you are going through. He was tempted just like we are.  Now Jesus might not have faced the same situation that you do, but He has faced the same types of temptations that you have faced.

·        Have you been tempted to worry? So has Jesus.

·        Have you been tempted to give up? So has Jesus.

·        Have you been tempted to steal? So has Jesus.

·        Have you been tempted to be dishonest? So has Jesus.

·        Have you been tempted to be lazy? So has Jesus?

·        Have you been tempted to lose your temper? So has Jesus?

What's the difference between your temptation and that of Jesus?  Jesus was tempted and never sinned. We have been tempted and often succumbed to sin.

Because Jesus is alive now and sitting at the right hand of God,

You are encouraged to "come boldly before the throne of grace to find grace to help in time of need."

So, when you worry, come to Jesus.

When you want to quit, come to Jesus.

When you are tempted to do wrong, come to Jesus.

He is there for us.

When we don't know which way to turn because problems seem so great, come to Jesus!

All of the great work that is done is by the Lord Jesus Christ is done by a resurrected Jesus Christ!  For NOW is Jesus risen from the dead!

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESURRECTION

But now is Christ risen from the dead

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is important, because the death of the Lord Jesus is important.

Every one of us will face death unless Jesus comes back before we die.

For most of us, when we die it will not be international news or even national or state news.  Our death will only be significant to a few people.

Jesus death was important because of who He was.

He was God in the flesh.

He was God in human form. John 1:1-4

Jesus' death was also important because of why he died.

Ezekiel 18:4 - …the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Jesus did not sin. Therefore Jesus was not required to die.

So why did He die?

He died to pay for your sins and mine. Isaiah 53:5-6, 2 Corinthians 5:21

When Jesus died on the cross He had accomplished everything He was supposed to accomplish in this life. That's why He cried "It is finished!

So we know why Jesus died.  He died for us. His death is important.  But His resurrection is also important.  When Jesus rose from the dead, it proved that God had accepted Jesus' sacrifice for sin.  Isaiah 53:10

The resurrection of Christ from the dead is also important, because it is a living Savior who offers us eternal life.  It is a man who conquered death that is offering us forgiveness and a life in Heaven!

It is a living Savior who says in Revelation 3:20, Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

It is faith in this living Savior that brings us forgiveness and eternal life. Romans 10:9-10

Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Have you placed your faith and trust in Christ?

THE IMPLICATION OF THE RESURRECTION

1 Corinthians 15:20 - But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

According to John MacArthur, when it was harvest time in Israel, the Israelites were to bring some of their crops as an offering to the Lord before they harvested the crop. This was called the "first fruits". John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, 1 Corinthians, © 1984, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, p. 416

The implication of the resurrection for us is that Christ is the "first fruits" of them that slept.  Those who sleep are those who know Christ as Savior but are dead.

The fact that Christ is the first fruits of the resurrection implies that others will follow. In fact this resurrection is promised right in 1 Corinthians 15:22-23

What does this mean for us?

It means that one day we, who are Christians, will have a new, resurrection body.

It means that not only need we not fear death because our spirits go to Heaven, we need not fear death because we, like Christ, will rise out of the grave. 1 Corinthians 15:52-55

This also means that all those Christians whom we have loved who have passed away will also have resurrection bodies. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

What tremendous implications we have.
