THE AUDIENCE

(IF YOU WOULD LIKE A COPY OF THE FULL TEXT OF THIS SERMON, ASK ME FOR IT BY NAME.  I WILL SEND AN ATTACHMENT IN WORD FORMAT. jpeters@alltel.net )

When I was a senior at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, I did my student teaching in a sixth grade classroom in Camden, New Jersey.  One of the fun things I did was car pool to Camden with 3 other people.

One morning Bob Holt was driving his Mustang and I was sitting on the passenger's side in the back seat.  Bob stopped to mail a letter at a post office.  At the suggestion of someone else in the car, I climbed across the seat and got in the driver's seat, and as Bob was returning I started to pull away, as a joke.  What did Bob do? He jumped on the hood of car as a passenger.  Well, I stopped, got back to my regular seat, and the game was over.  Except for one problem, we discovered that one of our professors for student teaching was in the car behind us.  We had an audience and didn't realize it.

When Dottie and I were missionaries with Child Evangelism Fellowship we lived near her parents.  Her Dad was a retired groundskeeper for my alma-mater, Glassboro State. He had worked on the football field and was given passes for all the home games.  One Saturday we went to a game. During the course of the game, I made a good natured but unkind comment about the other team. This little boy (whom I didn't know) in front of me looked at me with big eyes in disbelief.  I said something to him like, "It's okay son, I'm just kidding."  And his father said something like "We know who you are. You're Jack Peters from Child Evangelism Fellowship!"  Talk about embarrassed!  I had another audience that knew who I was and what I was standing for.

I'm sure that all of us have been in situations when we didn't know we had an audience and said or did things we were sorry for later.  We've also probably have been in situations when we didn't understand who our audience really was.  In those situations, it's very easy to put our feet in our mouths.

We need to remember, that whatever we do, God is our audience.  We need to consider Him above all others.

THE PRESENCE OF THE AUDIENCE - Psalm 139:7-10

God is always with us.

THE PERCEPTION OF THE AUDIENCE - Proverbs 5:21, Proverbs 15:3

God understands or perceives everything we say do. This is one audience who is never fooled!

THE POWER OF THE AUDIENCE - Luke 12:1-5

God is to be feared because He has the power to cast into hell. He is also to be feared because He is the judge.

THE PARTICIPATION OF THE AUDIENCE - 2 Corinthians 5:21, John 3:16,  John 14:16-17, Matthew 7:7-8

God, the audience, has chose to participate in our lives. First, He sent His Son to save us, now He involves himself through the work of the Holy Spirit and by answering prayer.

THE PLEASING OF THE RIGHT AUDIENCE - John 5:44, John 3:36, Proverbs 3:5-6, Colossians 3:17

We fail to have faith because we are trying to please others instead of trying to please God. - John 5:44

1 Corinthians 12:13-25

THE BODY OF CHRIST

The Body of Christ (the Church) is:

A DISTINCT BODY – Vs. 13

A DIVERSE BODY – Vss. 14-17

A DESIGNATED BODY – Vs. 18 (Each person has been designated by God to their place in the body.)

A DEPENDENT BODY – Vss. 19-25

FIRST STEPS – REVELATION 1:1-8

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #1

“The Book of Revelation is the scariest book in the Bible. Yet it is also one of the most comforting, reassuring, and exhilarating.” – Ray Stedman Ray Stedman, God’s Final Word, Understanding Revelation, (Grand Rapids, MI, Discovery House Publishers, 1991) p. 1

There is a Southern Gospel song sung by the Legacy Five that says, “I’ve read the back of the book, and we win.”  The Book of Revelation is the back of The Book, the Bible, and indeed it shows the triumph of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Because He wins, we win also!

Most folks who try to read the Book of Revelation have many questions and often get confused.  One of the reasons for confusion is caused by the different possible ways of interpreting the Book.

FOUR MAJOR METHODS FOR INTERPRETING REVELATION

1.     PRETERIST - Revelation is “…not a prediction of things to come, but, rather, John was writing about events taking place in his day.”

2.     HISTORICAL – “…sees the events recorded by John as symbolically fulfilled through church history between Christ’s first and second comings.”

3.     IDEALIST – “…interprets Revelation allegorically… This view sets aside the literal interpretation of Revelation…”

4.        FUTURIST – “teaches that the major portion of Revelation (chps. 4-22) describes prophetic events yet to be fulfilled.” All of the quotes above are from: David Levy, Revelation: Hearing the Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry Inc., 1999), pp. 14-15

We believe in the futurist method for interpreting Scripture and believe that the things written in Revelation will literally come to pass.

Revelation 1:19 - Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

The Book of Revelation was written about 96 A.D. by the Apostle John. In this study we are looking at the introduction to this book. We are taking our “First Steps” in understanding the Book of Revelation.

THE TITLE – Vss. 1-2

·       The word “Revelation” means “unveiling”.  It is like ripping the covers off a bed to expose and wake up someone who is sleeping there.  In this case the cover is taken off so we can see The Lord Jesus Christ.  This Revelation is both from and about Him.

·       This book was written so Christ’s servants (bond-slaves) can understand future events. Those not saved or seriously committed to Christ will have trouble understanding the things written here.

·       The things here are to come “shortly” to pass.  We are told to watch and be ready for these events beginning with the rapture of the church which can happen at any time.  Mark 13:35-37, Titus 2:11-13, Revelation 3:11

·       God’s view of time is different from ours.  In His eyes Jesus has been gone just a short time and can return at any moment. 2 Peter 3:8-9

THE TREASURES – Vss. 3-4a

·       We are blessed (have treasures) when we “read, hear, and keep”. “Keeping” the things written in this book includes obeying the commands, and having a proper understanding of the events described here.

·       The number seven is significant in this book.  It is the number of completion or perfection. Verse 3 gives us the first of seven blessings found in this book.

·       “The time is at hand” – Not only can Jesus come for all believers at any time, but He can also come for us as individuals at any time.  We must be ready!

·       We also have treasures of God’s “grace and peace” multiplied towards believers. 2 Peter 1:2

THE TRINITY – Vss. 4b-5a

·       The Father - …from him which is, and which was, and which is to come;

·       The Holy Spirit - and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

      Isaiah 11:2 - And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,

      the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

·       The Son - And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth.

THE TRIUMPH – Vss. 5b-7

·       Of the Past – We have been freed! – Vs. 5b

·       Of the Present – We are a “kingdom of priests” – Vs. 6 – 1 Peter 2:9-10

·       Of the Future – Christ will return to earth – Vs. 7 – This is not the rapture for the church but the appearance of Christ at the end of the “Great Tribulation Period”.

THE TESTIMONY – Vs. 8

·       God gives testimony of His identity.  Most likely, it is the Father talking here, but this statement is true of each member of the Trinity.

·       God is eternal and all knowing – He’s the “A to Z”!

·       God is “the Almighty” which means that He has the Power to do everything that He has promised in the Book of Revelation.
