HONOR GIVEN, HONOR EARNED

Exodus 20:12

TEN FOR THE MEN! #6

Exodus 20:12 - Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

“Parental authority is indispensable to a stable society. Through the ages, virtually all civilizations have recognized this truth. From the beginning, God placed mankind in families, establishing this relational unit as the building block of society. Parents were to be responsible for their children, and children were to submit to the authority of their parents. This natural law finds expression in the fifth commandment of God’s revealed law. It is no exaggeration to say that the well-being of a person, people, or nation begins in the home.”  Alistair Begg, Pathway to Freedom, How God’s laws Guide our Lives, (Chicago, Moody Publishers, 2003), p. 117

·       Please respond to the comment above.

·       Tell us about some positive and negative things you have seen in Christian families concerning honor given to and earned by parents.

·       How is our society as a whole doing in obeying the Fifth Commandment?  Why do you say this?

·       How should parents earn honor from their children?

·       Should children honor their parents even if the honor is not earned?

EXAMPLE SET, EXAMPLE FOLLOWED

Colossians 3:17 - And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

·       How does a good example earn respect from the child?

·       What behavior patterns and types of words garner respect from a child?

·       Why should I want to have a good reputation before my child?

Colossians 3:21 - Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

·       How can we anger and discourage our children?

·       What good examples do you emulate in your parents?

·       What example that they gave should you be emulating that you are not now?”

LEADERSHIP GIVEN, LEADERSHIP OBEYED

Proverbs 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6:4 - And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Ephesians 5:22 - Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

·       Who should be the principle teacher of Christianity in the home and why?

·       What often keeps families from obeying this principle?

·       Who should set the example concerning church attendance and involvement?  Why?

·       How will a wife’s submission to her husband help children follow this teaching?

Titus 1:6 (ESV) - if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.

Proverbs 3:1-2 - My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

·       What do Titus 1:6 and Proverbs 3:1-2 tell us about the children of Godly men?

RESPECT DEMANDED, RESPECT OFFERED

Proverbs 29:17 - Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

1 Timothy 3:4-5 - One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

·       Why is discipline important?

·       What are the wrong and right kinds of discipline?

·       Why are obedient children a condition for leadership in the church?

Ephesians 6:1 - Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Colossians 3:20 - Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

·       Why is a child’s obedience “right”?

·       Why is a child’s obedience “well pleasing unto the Lord”?

PROVISION PROVIDED, RETRIBUTION MADE

·       What does a parent need to provide for a child?

·       Do parents in America overdo in the area of providing for a child? How and why?

1 Timothy 5:8 - But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

1 Timothy 5:16 - If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

·       In Matthew 15:3-9, the Lord took the Jews to task for not taking care of the financial needs of parents in the name of religion.

·       What should motivate a child to provide for his parents?

·       What, besides physical help should a child provide for his parents in their old age?

COMMANDMENT OBEYED, BLESSINGS FOLLOW

Exodus 20:12 - Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Ephesians 6:2-3 - Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

·       What are two great promises in these verses?

·       How do obedient children help families and nations live longer?

·       How do obedient children make it go “well” with a family and nation?

1 SAMUEL 23:14-18, 24, 26

“I DON’T MAD…”

(A complete Sunday School or Bible Lesson)

v    People often say, “I don’t get mad, I just get even.”

v    How do politicians get even with other politicians?

v    How do people often try to get even with people who have hurt them, their family, or their friends?

v    How do people at work get even with other workers?

v    What is the Christian response to getting even?

v    React to the statements written below:

Matthew 5:38-39 - Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Matthew 5:43-45 - Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Romans 12:19-21 - Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

David was on the run from Saul.  Saul was making an “all out” effort to find and kill David. The reactions of Jonathan and David to Saul’s attacks are instructive, as well as the reaction of Saul to David’s kindness.

JONATHAN GOT HELPFUL – 23:14-18

·       In 1 Samuel 20:30-34 we see that Jonathan was angry with his father, Saul, because of his treatment of David.

·       Jonathan’s best friend, David was in hiding.  Instead of grieving in anger over his father, Jonathan took an important step. He became helpful. Vss. 14-16

·       Can you think of a low time in your life when someone has been a spiritual encouragement to you?  How did they encourage you?

·       Why is it wise to use the Word of God when you try to encourage others?

·       Why are Jonathan’s words in verse 17 magnanimous?  To what extent did they turn out to be true?

·       Jonathan returned home and David was still on the run. Do you think that this short visit had a long range effect on David?  What does that teach us? Vs. 18

DAVID GOT MERCIFUL – 24:1-15, 26:1-20

·       David was in “the wilderness of Engedi”. Engedi was an oasis, but above it were barren caves.

·       Saul was in pursuit of David.  In the process of pursuing David, Saul took a “bathroom break” in one of the caves.  It was the very cave where David and his men were hiding. Why do you think God allowed this to happen? 24:1-3

·       What was the advice given by David’s men? Was it good advice? 24:4

·       Why did David cut off a piece of Saul’s clothes and why was he convicted? 24:4-6

·       David was more recently anointed by God.  Why didn’t he take this as a “sign” to do away with Saul?

·       What do we learn about David’s leadership ability? 24:7

·       What are some of the wise things that David said to Saul? 24:8-15

·       Saul again pursued David in Chapter 26.  Again God made it that David had an opportunity to kill Saul. 26:1-8

·       David again refused to touch God’s anointed. What do David’s words teach us? 26:9-11

·       David took Saul’s water bottle and spear.  When he got at a distance, David taunted Abner. Why? 26:12-17?

·       What do David’s words mean in verses 18-20?

SAUL GOT (TEMPORARILY) REMORSEFUL - 24:16-22, 26:21-25

·       Do you think that Saul was sincere when he spoke in 1 Samuel 24:16-19?

·       Do you think that Saul was shaken by the events?  What should he have learned once and for all?

·       Saul conceded the kingdom to David and asked for mercy on his family. 24:22

·       It wasn’t long before Saul was pursuing David again in 1 Samuel 26. What character flaw do you see in Saul here?

·       When Saul was spared by David a second time, David’s faith was not in Saul, but in the Lord. 26:22-24

·       Why was Saul’s blessing hollow? Vs. 25

A GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN

REVELATION 4

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #5

Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Ray Stedman went to Hawaii as part of a 2 man painting crew.  His job was to paint “the militarily sensitive buildings”.  He had this observation:

“One day my partner and I were brought in to paint the office of Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander in chief of the entire U.S. Pacific Fleet and the chief naval strategist of World War II. I remember the awe I felt as I entered that office. I found myself surrounded by maps and charts of the Pacific Islands. Here in this room, I thought, the historic events of this war are being conceived and brought into existence. Within these four walls, the Admiral gathers with his captains and advisers to plan the tactics, advances, and assaults of the greatest conflict in human history.

“But the awe I felt at that moment pales in comparison to what John must have felt in the next scene from the book of Revelation – a scene in which he finds himself in the control center for the entire universe!” Ray Stedman, God’s Final Word – Understanding Revelation, (Grand Rapids, Michigan, Discovery House Publishers, 1991), p. 114

Revelation 1:19 - Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

·       We have already seen the first two parts of the Revelation Outline as described in Revelation 1:19.  Chapter 1 showed us the things that John had seen, his vision of Christ and commission to write.  Chapters 2 and 3 showed us the things which are, the different types of churches that exist today.

·       Now we begin to see the things which shall be hereafter. These are things that take place after the Rapture of the Church.

·       In Revelation 4 we get to see the “throne room of Heaven” and get a small glimpse of things that will begin to happen there.

HEAVENLY SUMMONS – Vss. 1-2

·       If the churches of chapters two and three are the things which are, it makes sense that when the things which shall be hereafter come along that the things which are will no longer exist.  The church is not mentioned in Revelation 4-19. This is one of the evidences that the church has been removed to Heaven.

·       Vss. 1-2 - John, in his spirit was called up to Heaven by the “first voice” (Revelation 1:10).  His body was on the Isle of Patmos, but the real him was in Heaven.  Just as John was called up to Heaven to view the Tribulation, the church will be called up and will view things from Heaven’s vantage. Revelation 3:10, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

·        Jesus makes it very clear that the things John would see were in the future.

·       “You might be surprised to find that the throne is the central theme of the book of Revelation. Out of 22 chapters in the book, there are only five chapters in which the word “throne” does not appear.” Stedman p. 114

HEAVENLY SCENE – Vss. 3-7

·       Vs. 3 - I believe it is God, the Father sitting on this throne. Revelation 5:6-7

·       The Jasper is a diamond. The sardine is perhaps a ruby. The emerald colored rainbow is in shades of green.  While the jasper and sardine (sardius) may refer to God’s glory and fiery judgment, the emerald rainbow reminds us that God is a God of grace and promise in spite of His judgment.

·       Vs. 4 - The identity of the 24 elders has been debated.  Some believe they are angels or signify Israel and the church. I believe the elders represent the raptured church in Heaven for the following reasons:

1.     The lack of reference to the church during the Tribulation and that elders are referred to as church leaders throughout the New Testament.

2.     Twenty-four appears to be the number of completion.  The complete church will be there. 1 Chronicles 24:4-5, 7-18 speak of a complete priesthood.  The church is a priesthood. 1 Peter 2:9

3.     National Israel will not be redeemed until the ministry of the 144,000 will be completed.

4.     The elders are clothed in white and wearing crowns. Evidence that they have been judged.  The church will be judged and rewarded by Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:10

·       Vs. 5 – “Lightnings, thunderings, and voices” speak of the judgments that are about to take place.  The Holy Spirit is referred to as “seven lamps of fire”. These are more like torches than candlesticks, again alluding to fiery judgment. Isaiah 11:2

·       Vs. 6a – “The Crystal Sea” seems to reflect God’s brilliance and majesty.

·       Vss. 6b-7 – The four beasts (“living creatures”) seem to be a special order of angelic beings that protect the holiness of God.  They are called “Seraphim” by Isaiah and “Cherubim” by Ezekiel. Isaiah 6:1-8, Ezekiel 1:5-14, Ezekiel 10:14-22

·       “Those descriptions view the four cherubim in relation to the created world; the lion represents wild creatures, the calf domestic animals, the eagle flying creatures, and man the pinnacle of creation. Symbolically, the lion represents strength, the calf service, the man reason, and the eagle speed.” John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, Revelation 1-11, (Chicago, Moody Press, 1999), p. 154

·       Isaiah 6:2 - Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

·       It has been noted by others that the seraphim use four of their wings for worship and two for service.

HEAVENLY SERVICE – Vss. 8-11

·       Vs. 8 – The eyes of the cherubim show their constant watchfulness.

·       They give constant worship and praise to God. Something we are to do in this life.  Think of how much more appropriate it will be in Heaven. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Hebrews 13:15

·       Vss. 9-10 – The elders join in the worship!  They have earned crowns (rewards) in this life, and cast them at the feet of God.

·       Vs. 11 – The elders proclaim the worthiness (worth) of God.

·       God receives worship as creator.

·       We are reminded that all things are created for His pleasure!

WHERE TO FIND IT IN THE BIBLE

Ø     Have you ever been frustrated because you can’t find something in the Bible?

Ø     How does knowing where things are in the Bible make you a better witness?

Ø     How does knowing where things are in the Bible help you personally?

Ø     How do you go about finding things in the Bible?

Here is a small list of verses to help you find some things in the Bible:

·        MAN'S SIN

Isaiah 64:6  - But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

·        GOD'S PROVISION FOR MAN'S SIN

Romans 5:6-8 - For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

·        GOD'S LOVE

1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

·        HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.

·        HOW TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE SAVED

1 John 5:11-12 - And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

·        WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SIN AFTER BEING SAVED

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psalm 32:5 - I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

·        HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GO TO CHURCH?

Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: [25] Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

·        WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET UPTIGHT?

Isaiah 26:3-4 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. [4] Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. [7] And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

·        WHERE DO I FIND COMFORTING WORDS IN THE BIBLE?

Deuteronomy 33:27 - The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Matthew 11:28-30 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Also see Psalms 23, 27, 121 Isaiah 41:10, Romans 8:35-39

·        WHERE DO I FIND PRAISE IN THE BIBLE

Psalm 100:1-5 - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. [2] Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. [3] Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. [4] Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. [5] For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

·        WHERE DO I FIND HOLY LIVING IN THE BIBLE?

1 Peter 1:15-16 - But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

·        WHERE DO I FIND GOD'S POWER FOR ME IN THE BIBLE

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
