Luke 4:14-45

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

Begin the Sermon by talking about towns in which you lived.  If the setting is informal, you might want to ask the congregations to share interesting places where they lived.

Sometimes we are born into a family that lives in a certain place.

Sometimes we move to a certain place because a job requires it or we are going to school there.

Sometimes we move to somewhere because we moving back with family.

Other times we move somewhere out of choice. People often retire to a place like Florida.

Two of the places that Jesus lived were two towns mentioned in our text.  One place was his hometown of Nazareth. We can assume that he lived there over 25 years.  The other place was the town of Capernaum.  Matthew 4:13

Now these two towns were different in a very important way.

NAZARETH WAS RESISTANT TO JESUS

CAPERNAUM WAS RESPONSIVE TO JESUS

And I want to suggest to you tonight that, figuratively speaking, you live in one of these two towns.  And I want to warn you that it is very possible to be a Christian, and at this point in your life be resistant to the Lord Jesus.

In Luke 3 there is the ministry of John the Baptist as the forerunner to Jesus and there is also the Baptism of the Lord Jesus. Luke tells us in Luke 3:21-22 - "Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."

In Luke 4 we are told about the temptation of Jesus.

Luke 4:1-2 - "And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered."

Of course Jesus successfully resisted the temptation by Satan and then began his ministry.

Luke 4:13-15 - Now we come to our text.  Jesus will visit two towns where he lived or had lived.  One was resistant to Jesus and the other was responsive to Jesus.  My question is where do you live Spiritually? Do you live in Nazareth, resistant to Jesus or in Capernaum, responsive to Jesus?

DO YOU LIVE IN NAZARETH? - Vss. 15-31

THEY WERE FAMILIAR - Vss. 15-22

Jesus gave a wonderful introduction of himself as Messiah through the presentation in the synagogue. Although the people admitted that they noted his gracious words, they could not get past the fact that he was someone that they knew. They thought that they knew Jesus well, but they didn't.

Today many have a similar problem.

They have heard about Jesus all their lives.

They have gone to church all their lives.

And yet they really don't know Him. Mention Jesus, and they'll say, "Oh, I know who He is."

But they don't act like they know Him and teaching about Him is just shut off. "Oh, I've heard that before!"

Christian we are in great danger when we get so familiar with Jesus that we take Him for granted or ignore Him. Don't let Jesus become so familiar to you that you ignore Him or take Him for granted.

In Nazareth they were familiar.

THEY WERE FAITHLESS - Vss. 23-24

Jesus knew what these people were thinking.

They were using a saying of that day, "Physician heal thyself."

They wanted to see Him perform some miracles as He had done in Capernaum.

Jesus used another saying of the day on them. "No prophet is without honor except in his own country."

They had had the very Son of God living among them for years, and they gave Him no honor. Other places, including Capernaum, did!

Why did Jesus not work miracles in Nazareth?

Matthew 13:58 - "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief."

Have you ever wondered why God doesn't do more around here?

Have you ever wondered why God doesn't do more in your life?

Could it be that we are just as unbelieving in some ways as the people of Nazareth.

THEY WERE FRUSTRATED Vss. 25-30

Vss. 25-27 - In these verses Jesus mentions two Gentiles who received miracles.  There were plenty of Jewish widows and leprous men, but God chose to heal these two.

Perhaps there are two things to consider here.  One would be the general state of unbelief of Israel in the days of Elijah and Elisha.

The people of Nazareth were showing the same unbelief. Therefore, there were no miracles.

The other thing to consider is that God is not obligated to act just because some one thinks that He should!

These People now took their unbelief to the outer limits.

They got angry, frustrated with Jesus. Why?

Because He told them the truth and they didn't want to hear it.

We can get that way sometimes.

We can angry or frustrated with people who tell us the truth about God or about our behavior, or lack of faith, and we don't want to hear it.

We can get angry or frustrated with God because He is confronting us with His truth and we don't want to hear it!

DO YOU LIVE IN NAZARETH?

OR DO YOU LIVE IN CAPERNAUM? - Vss. 31-41

DOCTRINE WAS RESPECTED - Vss. 31-32

Jesus did the same thing in Capernaum that he did in Nazareth.

He taught them. He taught them with authority, something rabbis of that day didn't do. They just quoted other rabbis! Jesus also taught them with power! There was conviction and strength in His words.

Why was that? Yes, He was the Son of God, but also remember that the Spirit of God had descended on Him at His baptism and that according to vs.14, "he returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee. "

Now, what was the difference between Nazareth and Capernaum?

Luke tells us about one Sabbath Day and Sabbath Days in Capernaum. There was one Sabbath in Nazareth, several in Capernaum.  What was the difference?  On one Sabbath Day in Nazareth the people rejected Him and His word.  Capernaum was evidently receptive to His teaching. That's why He stayed longer!

How receptive are you to the Word of God?

Do you listen with interest?

Do you listen with enthusiasm?

Do you pay attention?

Do you care?

Sometimes people get nothing out of God's Word because they are not receptive to God's Word.

SATAN WAS RELEASED - Vss. 33-37

The people were receptive and the devil was released.

In this situation the devil, through one of his demons, had a man bound.

Of course, the devil is no match for the Son of God!

Oh that we would realize this! The Lord Jesus came to give us victory over sin and to release the power of Satan from our lives! Romans 6:10-14

SICKNESS WAS REMOVED - Vss. 38-41

Jesus healed Peter's Mother-in-law.

There was a great victory! Notice out of gratitude she got up and served.

Does Jesus heal disease today? He does, according to His perfect will.

But more importantly He heals the diseases of the heart.

Only the one who is receptive to Jesus will experience His healing touch of the heart.

Capernaum was a responsive town for a while.

Unfortunately Capernaum eventually showed its unbelief. Matthew 11:23

Galatians 6:1-10

PREPARED TO HELP

(You may want to divide this into two messages.)

As a former Boy Scout, I remember the Scout motto, "Be Prepared".

The Scouts taught that there would be a multitude of situations one would face.  The scout needed to be ready to handle any situation.  We were taught such things as swimming, first aid, knot tying, cooking, and Morse code.

As a pastor I find it important to be prepared, especially when I am expected to preach or teach God's Word.  I must also be prepared to handle emergencies, listen at any time, pray with someone hurting, and give loving counsel.

As Christians God wants us to be prepared to help each other.  Galatians 6:1-10 shows us 6 things we should be prepared to do.

ASSIST - Vs. 1

When a Christian has failed God we are to be ready to humbly restore him to fellowship with God.

ASSUME - Vss. 2

When Christians have heavy burdens, we should be ready to help bear them, fulfilling the law of love. John 13:34-35

ACCEPT - Vss. 4-5

Although we do have the responsibility to help others with heavy burdens, we do have responsibility to bear our own burdens. The word burden here is different from verse 2. Here it simply refers to something carried in the hand. It is not a heavy burden like verse 2.

SHARE - Vs. 6

The person who is taught should share good things with his teacher.  This very well could refer to financial support for the full-time minister of the Word.

SOW - Vss. 7-8

We reap what we sow. Therefore, we should sow the things of the Spirit and not the things of the flesh.

SERVE - Vss. 9-10

We should not be weary in well doing because we will reap good things if we don't give up.

We should strive to do good to all, but especially to fellow believers.

GODLY LIVING IN THE CHURCH

#1 - Titus 1:1-4 - A FORMIDABLE TEAM

A COMPLETE LESSON – NOTE I AM RERUNNING THIS LESSON BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL WEEKS SINCE I SENT IT.

THE SECOND LESSON FOLLOWS

V     In what ways is this a Godly church?

V     In what ways could this church be more Godly?

V     Why should Godliness be important to our church?

V     How will teamwork help a church become more Godly?

THE BOOK OF TITUS

Ø     After Paul had been released after his first Roman imprisonment he evidently spent time doing evangelistic work on the Isle of Crete.

Ø     Crete is about 160 miles long and up to 35 miles wide sitting in the Mediterranean Sea southeast of Greece.

Ø     When Paul left Crete churches had been established on the Isles.  These churches would have been rather young and immature, needing further training.

Ø     Titus, an able assistant to Paul, was left to train and supervise these young churches.

Ø     Not only was Paul’s epistle a personal letter of encouragement and instruction to young “Pastor Titus”, but it was a letter that was to be read publicly.  This letter helped give Titus the authority to do what he had to do to establish Godly principles within the church.

Ø     The Book of Titus helps us learn how Godly living is to be practiced in the church.

In Titus 1:1-4 we are introduced to a formidable team of a veteran servant of God and a faithful protégé, both committed to the establishment of Godly churches.

1. THE PERSON

Titus 1:1 - Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ,

P  Why is the way a Christian views himself important?

P  What are some of the unhealthy views a Christian can have of himself?

P  Why is being a “servant” (bond slave) of God a healthy view of oneself for a Christian to have?

P  How did Paul’s being a willing slave to God impact his life?

P  How will viewing ourselves as God’s slave complicate our lives?

P  How will viewing ourselves as God’s slave simplify our lives?

P  Why should we want to be God’s slaves?

P  Suppose each Christian in our church sincerely views himself as and acts as a slave to God and our Lord Jesus Christ.  How will that effect Godly living within the church?

P  Paul was also an “apostle”.  An apostle is “one sent” by God. The apostles had seen the risen Lord, and were witnesses of the resurrection.

P  Paul probably wanted to establish his authority as an apostle in order to help Timothy when he dealt with sticky church issues.  If Paul was an apostle and Timothy was working under Paul’s direction, Timothy had the authority to do what he needed to do to bring about Godliness in the church.

P  What does a pastor have authority to do in the local church?

P  How and when should he exercise this authority?

2. THE PURPOSE

Titus 1:1 - …according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

v    As a bond slave to God and an apostle, Paul had two purposes mentioned here.

v    First, he was to be an evangelist. He was to be concerned with bringing the Gospel to “God’s elect”.

v    Who are “God’s elect?” John 3:16, Ephesians 1:3-6

v    Does anyone get to Heaven without personally trusting Jesus Christ as Savior? John 3:36, 1 John 5:12

v    What is the responsibility of the church in evangelism? Mark 16:15

v    What impact should the “doctrine of election” have on our witnessing?

v    Paul’s second purpose was to stress the truth according to Godliness.  Paul was to train those who have trusted Jesus Christ as Savior to live according to God’s truth which produces Godly living.

v    Who was Paul’s authority in teaching Godly living? What is ours?

v    Why is not striving to live a Godly life inconsistent with claiming to be a Christian?

v    Why should we want to live Godly lives?

v    Why should we want to help other Christians live Godly lives?

3. THE PERSPECTIVE

Titus 1:2 - In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

J    According to this verse, what is neat about eternal life?

J    What do you think the word “hope” means here?

J    How did this hope motivate Paul to evangelize and teach Godly living?

J    How and why should this same hope motivate us?

4. THE PROCLAMATION

Titus 1:3 - But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

Р  What is preaching?

Р  Why is preaching important? 1 Corinthians 1:18-31,

      2 Timothy 4:2

Р  What makes a person a good preacher?

     1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Р  Why should “preachers” be nervous? James 3:1,

     1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Р  Why is preaching important in the local church today?

Р  How can you help the preacher “watch for your soul?” Hebrews 13:17

5. THE PARTNER

Titus 1:4 - To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

è   Paul was a “spiritual father” to Titus. He probably led Titus to the Lord.

è   Titus is not mentioned in the Book of Acts, but we know from Galatians 2:1-3 that he was a Gentile who was not circumcised.

è   Titus, like Timothy, worked under Paul and often went on various assignments as an extension of Paul’s ministry.

è   Why should Godly men and women have protégés?

è   Why did Titus especially need “grace, mercy, and peace?”

è   How is God the source of “grace, mercy, and peace?”

GODLY LIVING IN THE CHURCH

#2 - Titus 1:5-9 - GODLY LEADERSHIP

·       What qualities do you admire most in a church leader?

·       Should we expect more of our leaders than we do of others or ourselves? Why or why not?

·       What does Hebrews 13:7 tell you about church leaders?

Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

·       For what reasons should we strive to meet as many qualities for church leadership, even though we may never expect to be in a position of authority?

Titus was a young protégé of the Apostle Paul who was left on the Island of Crete in order to help new churches grow.  In this passage Paul is reminding Titus to appoint leaders in each church. He spells out the qualities that are of expected of “Elders”. These are qualities leaders are to display as examples to others.  We should strive to make these things part of a Godly walk.

INTRODUCTION

Titus 1:5 - For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

·       Titus was to finish up the administrative set up of the churches. Why is it necessary to have some form of government in the local church?

·       There are two terms used for the same office – “Elder” and “Bishop”.  The word “Elder” would refer to the maturity or character of the person in leadership.

·       The word “Bishop” refers to the man’s job of being an overseer.

·       Generally there was more than one elder in each church.

·       The following verses give us an idea of what an elder or bishop was to do.

1 Timothy 5:17 - Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

Acts 20:28 - Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

1 Peter 5:1-4 - The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: [2] Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; [3] Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. [4] And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Hebrews 13:17 - Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

THE ELDER MUST BE A FAMILY MAN – Vs. 6

1. "The husband of one wife."

2. "Having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly."

THE ELDER MUST BE A FIRM MAN – Vs. 7

1. "Blameless, as the steward of God." (In Vss. 6&7)

2. "Not self-willed"

3. "Not soon angry"

4. "Not given to wine"

5. "No striker"

6. "Not given to filthy lucre"

THE ELDER MUST BE A FRUITFUL MAN – Vs. 8

1. "A lover of hospitality"

2. "A lover of good men"

3. "Sober"

4. "Just"

5. "Holy"

6. "Temperate"

THE ELDER MUST BE A FAITHFUL MAN – Vs. 9

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

·       How does one “hold fast” the Word of God?

·       Why is the Word of God called faithful?

·       Why is it a necessity to teach sound doctrine?
