Word for Today, Fri, 08 Mar 2002: The Great Commandment Revisited

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

As we prepare for a weekend, I'd like to send you a fairly short
message containing a simple message and scripture. You can find
the complete message at the reference at the end of the text.

The scripture passage is a familiar one to many - frequently
spoken at weddings and funerals. The passage comes from the
famous chapter on love written by the apostle Paul. It is one of
the most concise descriptions of love that is available. Notice
how well it describes appropriate behavior.

My prayer is that each of us (beginning with me) learn to not
only read these words, but frequently think about them and allow
every aspect to become an integral part of who we are. There are
other verses of scripture (particularly those written by the
disciple and apostle John) that speak specifically about the fact
that GOD IS LOVE. The Great Commandment (which we examined last Friday)
is to love God and one another. When we connect the description that Paul
writes here with the understanding of God's love and the
realization that God is the personification of love, doesn't that
say something significant?

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

Verse: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does
not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not
self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the
truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always
perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Prayer: Dear Lord, it is so easy to become cynical about the
world and the people around me. Keep me from being hardened. Fill
me with your love, fill me so full that it overflows in my speech
and actions. Amen.
