Word for Today, Fri, 12 Jan 2001: Which Model?

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

Do you remember Joseph? He was Jacob's favorite son, the one who
had "a coat of many colors", the same one who was sold into
slavery by his jealous brothers, the one who also ended up
delivering Israel from starvation when a seven year drought dried
up most of the middle east.

Joseph really points us to Jesus Christ, for his life does model
the life of Christ in many ways. Joseph was not without sin, so
he is not a replacement for Christ. Joseph shows us what can
happen when we are not careful with our words; even those who are
close will "turn" on us.

But Joseph also shows us how our lives can be used in God's
service when we put aside our own agendas and consider first what
God wants to do with our lives. There are lessons to learn from
Joseph wherever we come from. Are we ready to wear his "coat of
many colors" and let the fullness of God shine in our lives? We
may have to pay a price for that privilege, but the blessings
will be eternal, as will the joy and peace that results. What
shall we do with this?

Dear God,

I confess that I remain needy, and I desire to be completely
Yours today. Please lead me along the path You want me to take.
Protect me on that narrow path, guiding every step. Amen.

OVERVIEW

Joseph's brothers sell him as a slave.

INSIGHT

We don't know Joseph's motivation in telling his brothers
about the dreams he had. But even if it was good, it had
disastrous results. His brothers hated him because they
saw that their father, Jacob, loved Joseph more than the
others.

Joseph's brothers are an extreme example of the fact that
when our self worth is threatened, we tend to do whatever
we need to do to preserve a sense of worth. We ought to
get our sense of self worth from our relationship with
the Lord, but at times we all feel threatened.

One of the ministries that the Lord can use greatly in
our lives is the ministry of encouragement. We can affirm
the worth of others and help them see that God loves
them, and we do too.

PRAYER

* Praise God that He is always in control of your life,
* even when things seems out of control to you:

Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. From the end of
the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is
overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from
the enemy. I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I
will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah (Psalm
61:1-4).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life
* in fellowship with Him:

Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His
compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is
Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23).

* Confess any sins that God brings to your attention. Now
* voice your affirmation of His Word:

Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him
with the whole heart! I will praise You with uprightness
of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments (Psalm
119:2,7).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

* courage to share Christ's love with your co-workers and
friends,

* compassion for others,

* revival in the churches of Great Britain.

* Close by meditating on this thought:

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also
live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from
the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him
(Romans 6:8-9).
