Word for Today, Fri, 18 Jan 2002: Prayers for our families and our leaders

Posted by: masinick <masinick@...>

Dear friends,

As we close another work week, school week, and already pass the
middle of the first month of the new year, let us pass and put
off all things that hinder us from a deep personal and meaningful
relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I believe
it is a lack of appreciation for our relationship with Him that
is the root of a great variety of difficulties that we face, and
that is why I personally have such a strong urge to cultivate my
own personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, and that
is also why I share with each of you with such a passion.

Enclosed are prayer request messages from the Presidential Prayer
Team and a message from Bob Gass about establishing a healthy
basis for "living together" - as demonstrated by Christ and
documented in numerous places in the Bible.

My prayer is that we will take all of this information and pray
about it, think about it, ask for wisdom, then respond. I also
pray that each of you will find contentment, peace, hope, joy,
and love in your hearts as you begin the weekend. May God bless
you always!

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

PRAYER REQUESTS FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 20, 2002:

This week as we consider the great burden of the President's
schedule and responsibilities, pray that God will shield him
from harm. Pray with President Bush that the strong values that
have characterized our nation will continue to be upheld across
our country (see his quote below).

Remember also the Supreme Court as they consider matters of
weighty significance to our nation. The Court will soon be
considering a case involving the use of vouchers (state-provided
funds) being paid to church- related schools.

As the 107th session of Congress convenes on Wednesday of this
week, pray that this session will be characterized by a spirit
of unity and cooperation.

Finally, as the President and his staff prepare for the State of
the Union Address, pray with him for this most crucial speech.
Ask God to empower him with words of courage, strength and
leadership that will unite and inspire all Americans.

QUOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

"I also want our country to continue to embrace the values that
make our nation so wonderful. I believe the great strength of
our country lies not in our halls of government, but in the
hearts and souls of the American people. It's a million acts of
kindness and compassion on a daily basis that define the true
spirit and the true strength of America. We live in a blessed
land. It's a society which says, you've got to love your
neighbor just like you love yourself. That's the spirit of
America that I know." --President George W. Bush

IN HONOR OF MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY

"Let us pray. O God, our Heavenly Father, out of whose mind this
great cosmic universe has been created, toward whom the weary
and perplexed of all generations turn for consolation and
direction, we come before Thy presence this evening thanking
Thee for the many blessings of life. We come recognizing our
dependence on Thee." --First Part of an Invocation Delivered by
Martin Luther King Jr. at the Billy Graham Evangelistic
Association Crusade (July 18, 1957 New York, N.Y.)

ADDITIONAL LEADERS TO PRAY FOR THIS WEEK:

Attorney General: John Ashcroft
White House Chief of Staff: Andrew Card
White House Press Secretary: Ari Fleisher
U.S. Trade Representative: Robert Zoellick

FROM ONE OF OUR NATION'S FOUNDERS:

"I shall need, too, the favor of that Being in whose hands we
are, who led our fathers, as Israel of old, from their native
land and planted them in a country flowing with all the
necessaries and comforts of life; who has covered our infancy
with His providence and our riper years with His wisdom and
power, and to whose goodness I ask you to join in supplications
with me that He will so enlighten the minds of your servants,
guide their councils, and prosper their measures that whatsoever
they do shall result in your good, and shall secure to you the
peace, friendship, and approbation of all nations." ---Thomas
Jefferson

FROM THE HONORARY COMMITTEE:

"Prayer is not the mystical experience of a few special people,
but an aggressive act. . . an act that may be performed by
anyone who will accept the challenge to learn to pray." --Jack
Hayford

WELCOME TO THESE NEW HONORARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Recording Artist, Ricky Skaggs
National Prayer Committee Director, David Bryant.

INSPIRATIONAL REFERENCE OF THE WEEK:

"You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill
your vows. What you decide on will be done, and light will
shine on your ways." --The Bible, Job 22: 27, 28 (NIV)

PRAYER QUOTE FOR THE WEEK:

"Pray the largest prayers. You cannot think a prayer so large
that God in answering it, will not wish you had made it larger.
Pray not for crutches but wings." --Phillips Brooks

AMERICAN INSPIRATIONS RADIO PROGRAM

Radio stations across the country have in their hands a sample
recording of the new American Inspirations radio program
written, produced and distributed by The Presidential Prayer
Team. Pray that many stations will open a time slot for this
short but powerful daily feature to begin syndication February
4. Along the same lines as Paul Harvey's program, The Rest of
the Story, this feature offers an inspirational story of an
individual each day that relied on their faith in God to get them
through. From the true life stories of presidents to business
leaders, generals to slaves, each program reveals God's hand on
America since its earliest days.

THE AMERICAN INSPIRATION AWARD

In unison with the launch of the radio program by the same name,
The Presidential Prayer Team has established the American
Inspiration Award. Several national leaders each year who
clearly rely on God and prayer will be recognized as "American
Inspirations." An annual American Inspiration of the Year award
will be given to the most public national figure who fits the
criteria as nominated and selected by a judging committee. The
first annual award will be announced on President's Day in
conjunction with the National Religious Broadcasters Convention
at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville.

WORD FOR TODAY
Written by Bob Gass
18 Jan 2002 Living Together - Part One

" love is patient, love is kind... "
1 Corinthians 13 : 4 (NIV)

The foundation of any good relationship is commitment,
communication, and compromise. Work on respecting your
differences. Don't tell your wife her Christmas decorations are
silly, or a waste of money. Her delight in them may be rooted in
some childhood memory, or a need to have now what she didn't
have then. If you love her, just make sure the lights are all
ready to hang up by early December. Some of us have difficulty
accepting differences. Before we came to Christ we were
hell-raisers. Now we can't eat dinner at our brother-in-law's
house because he doesn't say grace; or we throw our teenager out
on the street, because he or she listens to 'heavy metal'. If
Christ lives in your heart, shouldn't you have more
love...joy...peace...patience...kind ness...and all those other
spiritual virtues...than anybody else in the house? (See Gal
5:22).When it comes to communication, observe these four rules:
(1) Focus on what you shouldn't say, as well as what you
should. If you tell somebody everything you think, before you've
really thought it through, you'll be in trouble for sure. Not
everything needs to be said; some things should be kept to
yourself. (2) Don't speak in anger.

Emotional outbursts can result in hurtful comments you may not
mean at the time, and will later regret. (3) Be careful what you
say when you're tired. Exhaustion lowers your guard and makes
you careless. (4) Always wait until your judgement is
clear. Think things through before you speak. That's what's
called 'living together.'
